AVFC: Fans react to Mohamed Camara links

Aston Villa and West Ham have both made contact over a potential deal for Young Boys defender Mohamed Camara.

And, as to be expected, a number of Aston Villa fans have been reacting to the links on social media.

According to Sports Witness, Villa and the Hammers have asked for information regarding the 23-year-old centre-back.

No formal offers have been made, however, the Swiss side would allow the Guinea international to leave this summer, should a convincing offer come in.

Villa recently confirmed they have reached an agreement with Royal Antwerp for Bjorn Engels, with the centre-back now set to depart Villa Park.

Camara could well replace Engels, with the former making 39 appearances in all competitions last season.

Villa fans react

@villareport shared the news of Villa’s interest in Camara on Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply, with many not knowing much about Camara.

SAFC urged to sign Vokes

Kevin Phillips has urged Sunderland to sign Sam Vokes on loan this summer after they were linked with a move for the striker.

The Lowdown: Black Cats need Wyke replacement

Charlie Wyke scored 30 goals in all competitions for Sunderland last term (Transfermarkt), but he is officially now a free agent and appears to be on the verge of a move to Celtic (Football Insider).

As such, the Black Cats are in need of a new striker, and according to The Daily Mirror journalist Darren Witcoop, Sunderland are interested in signing Vokes on loan.

The Latest: Phillips urges signature

Speaking to Football Insider, Phillips believes Vokes would do a good job in League One. He said:

“It didn’t go to plan for him at Stoke.

“He came in not long after I left. Vokes is that type of player, you know what you’re going to get.

“He is in that Charlie Wyke ilk. He’s big and powerful in the box and gets on the end of crosses.

“That’s not a bad one to be fair. You would like to think he can perform in League One.

“He could suit Sunderland’s style of play, that could turn out to be a decent signing.”

The Verdict: Could do a job

There is no doubt that Lee Johnson will be disappointed to lose Wyke. While some Sunderland supporters may not be too unhappy to see the back of him due to his overall play, it is hard to replace 30 goals no matter what level you are playing at.

Vokes, currently at Stoke City, has not had the best of times with the Potters, scoring just 11 times in 86 matches. However, throughout his career at club level, he has 110 goals to his name, and has scored goals both in the Premier League and the Championship. On top of that, he has 64 caps for Wales and also scored for his country at Euro 2016. He may now be 31, but he could still do a very good job at the Stadium of Light.

In other news, Sunderland fans are happy to see the back of this man.

How Rangers could look next season

Rangers will be looking to add some quality to their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League next season, with Steven Gerrard’s side’s performances in the cup competitions arguably one blemish on an otherwise superb season.

Whilst the Gers were able to finish the league season unbeaten and claim their first title in ten years, bringing an end to their Old Firm rival’s run of consecutive titles in the process, they failed to impress in the domestic cup competitions and fell short in the Europa League against Slavia Prague.

Therefore, Gerrard will surely be keen to add to his squad ahead of next season and the Gers have been linked with a whole host of names ahead of the summer transfer window.

Here’s how Football FanCast predicts Rangers’ strongest XI could look next season…

After signing a contract extension and being superb in the title win last season, it seems likely that Allan McGregor will continue as Gerrard’s first-choice goalkeeper.

James Tavernier and Borna Barisic seem likely to continue at full-back after they impressed last season, although Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey both showed that they can be relied upon as backup.

At centre-back, Filip Helander has been touted for an Ibrox exit, so Joseph Okumu could be the man to replace him as Rangers battle to sign him from Elfsborg this summer, with a fee of £3.4m likely to be enough to bring him to Ibrox.

Joey Veerman is another who has been heavily linked with a move to Rangers and whilst he would cost around £8.5m, his performances at Heerenveen in recent seasons suggest he could be a massive success at Ibrox next season.

Steven Davis and Joe Aribo would likely start ahead of him in midfield, with the likes of Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack also likely to be in regulars in Gerrard’s side.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Fashion Sakala has already arrived from Oostende and could be the man to step up as Ryan Kent’s replacement on the left wing, with the former Liverpool youngster continuing to be linked with Leeds United.

On the opposite flank, Ianis Hagi has also been touted with an exit so transfer target Zinedine Ferhat, who is currently valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, could be signed as the Romanian’s replacement, which would take sporting director Ross Wilson’s spending to around £19m.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

If Alfredo Morelos stays then he will surely start up front, although the likes of Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe, who recently extended his stay at Ibrox, can all provide competition in attack.

Spurs can forget keeping Kane if Nuno hired

The latest name linked in Tottenham Hotspur’s managerial search will surely have Harry Kane worried…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the North London outfit’s newly-appointed sporting director, Fabio Paratici, is pushing hard to secure former Wolves boss Nuno Santo in what has been described as a “major coup” for the club.

It’s thought that the Italian is the driving force behind Spurs’ sudden U-turn on the 47-year-old, who was quickly ruled out following the sacking of Jose Mourinho in mid-April.

Everton and Crystal Palace have been interested in appointing him but the Portuguese remains out of work heading into pre-season.

Bye-bye Kane!

Nuno has plenty of credentials to be considered for the role, having guided Wolves into the Europa League in their very first season back in the big time but he’s simply not the right fit for Spurs’ ‘DNA’ or needs.

And this will surely push Kane ever so much closer to the exit door after reports suggested that he has reiterated his desire to leave the club during the current transfer window, as per Sky Sports.

It is widely believed that chairman Daniel Levy is after an attack-minded head coach who can commit to the development of its young prospects, with the likes of Oliver Skipp, Jack Clarke and Ryan Sessegnon on the fringes of the first-team.

Well, Nuno’s final season at Molineux provides some insight as to why he might be a very disastrous choice for Paratici.

His Wolves side bagged only 36 goals from their 38 league matches, some 15 fewer than a season earlier and the lowest of any team sitting 16th or above. Even relegated West Brom were only one behind their final total, which is damning.

Of course, some of that can be attributed to the absence of Raul Jimenez but his replacement, Fabio Silva, only found the net four times in 32 appearances and that should concern Spurs’ leading talisman greatly.

Indeed, it’s thought that this perceived negative brand of football was one of the reasons behind Fosun’s amicable split with the former goalkeeper, with it being confirmed two days before the final day that he was going to leave by mutual consent.

Wolves have since replaced him with a manager that registered a 103-goal season at his former club, so that tells you all you need to know.

Something that has since backed this up is a claim from BirminghamLive reporter Alex Dicken, who told football.london: “It wasn’t always pretty to watch and some coaches, namely Maurizio Sarri, criticised their lack of intent in games, but during those first three seasons it worked.

“It was frustrating how slowly Wolves started games and there are some damning statistics about their lack of goals in the first half of matches under Nuno. That could have just been a coincidence, but more likely it was down to the way Nuno set his team up.

“This is why I would be so surprised if Spurs appointed him. The style of football wouldn’t be dissimilar to Jose Mourinho’s, but Nuno boasts nothing like his compatriot’s trophy record.”

Overall, the Midlands side managed a measly 1.18 goals per game in the Premier League under Nuno, which is a drastic decrease from Mourinho’s 2.01 goals per game record at Spurs – and he’s said to have “sucked the culture out of the club.”

Furthermore, ex-Spurs goalkeeper Paul Robinso has revealed another concerning reason over the club potentially appointing the Portuguese, he told Football Insider:

“I heard from my sources that he wants 15 or 20 backroom staff members coming with him but I cannot see that happening at Spurs because Daniel will not want to do that because it will be very expensive.”

On the above evidence, it’s hard to see Spurs suddenly winning the sort of silverware that Kane is desperately craving and it’s not like he’s certain to thrive in what seems like such a negative system.

He may well want to leave even more if Nuno is hired.

AND in other news, Forget Nuno: Paratici can revive Spurs by hiring “wonderful” 57 y/o with 67% win rate…

The selectors have announced their side for the match against CFX Academy at Country Club in Harare this coming weekend

Derrick Townshend22-Mar-2002The selectors have announced their side for the match against CFX Academy at Country Club in Harare this coming weekend. The twelve players making up theteam are:Williams – captain, King – vice-captain, Dabengwa, Ewing, Mahachi,McKillop, Mukandiwa, Mupariwa, Siziba, Strydom, Townshend and Walker.Walker is a new cap, a sound right-hand batsman and wicket-keeper, who will probably keep wicket in the match, allowing Siziba to concentrate on his batting where he is in prolific form. Walker comes into the side in place of Warren Gilmour, who has left for England, to play both cricket and hockey for about nine months. The other change in the side is Townshend for Kenny. With the Academy track likely to be flat, the luxury of three spinners doesn’t allow a balanced bowling attack. The seam attack is likely to be Mukandiwa and Townshend, followed by Strydom and Mahachi, with the spin coming from Dabengwa and Ewing. If the bowlers bowl line and length, they should be able to contain the Academy batting line-up and allow the batsmen to chase or build a decent score, something they have not been able to do in the previous two matches.New cap Walker is likely to open the batting with Siziba, allowing the outer form of talented King a chance to make runs batting at three. The side is beginning to blend and should be more positive, and hopefully the elusive victory may be forthcoming.

Wolves transfer update on Lee

Many Wolves fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Lee Kang-in.

As per Super Deporte, the Midlands club are currently watching the Valencia ace along with a whole host of other teams in Europe.

The La Liga side are open to selling him in the summer window, with the Molineux faithful knocking on the door for his potential signature.

Transfermarkt currently value him at £13.5m, but he could be sold for lower than his market value.

Given that he is just 20 years of age, and a number of top European teams, including the likes of Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina, Milan and Napoli are also interested in signing him, the Wanderers should seriously consider pouncing on what could well turn out to be an absolute bargain.

Royals back on top as Norwich Union League tables take shape

Worcestershire Royals moved back level on points with Warwickshire Bears at the top of the Norwich Union League Division One table thanks to an eight-wicket victory over Somerset Sabres at Taunton

George Dobell07-Jul-2002Worcestershire Royals moved back level on points with Warwickshire Bears at the top of the Norwich Union League Division One table thanks to an eight-wicket victory over Somerset Sabres at Taunton.Royals’ captain Graeme Hick led the way for the visitors with a destructive 141 not out, as they made light of what had appeared to be a challenging target of 270.Hick added 127 with Vikram Solanki for the second wicket, before taking the game beyond doubt in a partnership of 139 with Ben Smith (64 not out). The Sabres are now facing a real fight in the second half of the season if they are to preserve their first division status. The most comfortable victory of the day came at Maidstone, as Kent Spitfires stormed to victory over Durham Dynamos by 165 runs.Once again the Spitfires were grateful for the broad bat of Rob Key, as he added 102 with James Hockley for the third wicket. But when they both fell for 58 the middle order failed to capitalise on their hard work and but for Andrew Symonds’ 31and a late 21 from James Golding, they may have let slip their good start. As it turned out they had more than enough runs. David Masters cut through the Dynamos top order like a knife through butter, reducing them to 19-5 and then 35-6. Only Marc Symington (22) and Graeme Bridge (24) offered resistance, but the loss sees leaves Durham Dynamos rooted to the foot of the first division table. Spitfires consolidate their position in mid table. In the remaining game in the top division Phil DeFreitas reduced Glamorgan Dragons to 28-3 at Swansea before Matthew Maynard (38) and Adrian Dale (78 not out) gave the home team heart and helped them towards a moderate final total of 220-8.DeFreitas followed up his 4-24 by opening the batting for the Foxes and striking five fours in his 16-ball 25 to set the tone for the Foxes reply. And, with Iain Sutcliffe scoring his second NUL 50 of the season, and useful contributions from Wells, Maddy and Burns, the Foxes reached the target in the final over to join the Dragons in mid-table.In the second division a century from Jeff Cook was the platform for Northants Steelbacks’ 62-run victory over Lancashire Lightning at Northampton.Cook (102) added 109 for the third wicket with David Sales (64), a competition best for the Australian-born left-hander, to help his side to a competitive 261-8 in their 45 overs. And although Alec Swann and Mark Chilton added 68 for Lightening’s first wicket, they were unable to match the pace set by the home batsmen as the Steelbacks’ bowlers kept to a good line and length throughout. The pressure from the ever-rising run rate caused Byas and Alec Swann to perish to run outs as the middle order fell away, and Cook capped a memorable day by snatching three late wickets.Elsewhere Gloucestershire Gladiators defended a paltry 161 all out in 40.3 overs against Derbyshire Scorpions at Derby to boost their promotion hopes.Graeme Welch took career-best one-day figures of 5-18 in nine overs as the visitors slipped from 74-1 to 96-6 before 20 not out from James Averis took them to a barely respectable total. But it proved to be enough as only Dominic Cork (43) of the home players could muster any resistance. They became so bogged down that they eventually finished seven short of the target, having taken all 45 overs to reach 154-9, at a rate of under 3.5 runs an over.20-year-old Timothy Murtagh rocked Middlesex Crusaders with three early wickets as Surrey Lions roared to victory at Southgate. Owais Shah helped his side to 194-8 in a weather-curtailed innings, with an innings of 74. But it was never likely to be enough as a stand of 121 between Mark Ramprakash (87 not out playing against his old club) and promising all-rounder Rikki Clarke (62 not out) proved.Surrey Lions were without several first choice players due to injuries and international calls, but on this form and with the strength in depth they posses, they look favourites to take the NUL second division title and promotion.Meanwhile Neil Johnson hit a fine 91 for Hampshire Hawks as they beat Sussex Sharks by 93 runs in Southampton. With Derek Kenway he added 78 for the first wicket, but the hosts fell away later, scoring a disappointing 203 all out, with Billy Taylor finishing with 4-22.However, it proved enough as the Sharks slipped to just 110 all out in 34.2 overs in reply.A partnership of 51 between Chris Adams and Murray Goodwin threatened briefly, but when they fell in quick succession to Shaun Udal (4-31), the Sharks never looked likely to reach the target. The loss leaves the Sharks floundering at the bottom of the second division, while the Hawks – still with a couple of games in hand – will feel they have every chance of gaining promotion.

Gavaskar still a master

LORD RELATOR penned a famous calypso as a tribute to India’s successful team in the West Indies in 1971 and its outstanding batsman, Sunil Gavaskar.Gavaskar, aged 21 and on Test debut, enjoyed a phenomenal series in which he compiled 774 runs, including four centuries at the incredible average of 154.80.It was the start of a trend of heavy scoring in his duels with the West Indies. After Ajit Wadekar’s men came away with a 1-0 series triumph 31 years ago, Lord Relator, a Trinidadian, composed a calypso that still brings them memories whenever it hits the airwaves.”Funnily enough, I had no idea that calypso had been written until 1974,” Gavaskar admitted to on Saturday.Feared bowlerAndy Roberts, one of the feared West Indies fast bowlers who battled with Gavaskar, drew it to his attention when India were touring England where Roberts was representing Hampshire at the time.”He had it on his tape and he made me listen to it,” recalled Gavaskar, who is now a highly-respected television analyst and newspaper columnist.”I love it. The lyrics are great. The tune is great. It’s very catchy and very popular in India when it is played.”The calypso is likely to be remembered for years to come – not only because of Gavaskar’s astonishing run in that series, but also because of his amazing consistency against the West Indies at a time when the Caribbean side boasted of menacing fast bowling attacks.”Those days were obviously special. I’ve always enjoyed playing against the West Indies,” he said. “They played their cricket hard and aggressive, but they also played in a gentlemanly manner – with none of the kind of abuse that goes on in cricket today.”In five series’ against the West Indies, Gavaskar had to contend with Roberts, Michael Holding, Joel Garner, Malcolm Marshall, Wayne Daniel, Sylvester Clarke and that lot. Several good players were made to look ordinary against them, but Gavaskar was always a thorn in their side.By the time he was finished, his record against the West Indies in 27 matches included an aggregate of 2 749 runs, an average of 65.45, and a tally of 13 centuries. No one before or after him has had as many hundreds against the world champions of the late ’70s and ’80s. No one has as many as his 34 Test centuries and only Australian Allan Border, who played 31 matches more than Gavaskar’s 125, has more than his 10 122 runs (ave. 51.12)What, therefore, was the secret behind his success?”I guess it was my height – seriously,” said Gavaskar, who stands about 5ft, 5in.”When I say that, a lot of people think I am saying it with my tongue in my cheek. The fact of the matter is that because the West Indians were quick, every time they banged the ball in short, it would go well over my head.”Tall batsmenTaller batsmen, he said, would have been fending those deliveries off their faces.”Being short was a real big plus as far as playing the West Indian quicks were concerned. They had to pitch the ball a lot further up to get the ball to bounce around my throat. Not every bowler can do that.”He describes the West Indies bowlers of that time as “challenging”. Each was different in his own way, but he was always especially careful against Roberts and Marshall.”These two had the ability – not that the others didn’t – but these two had the special ability to bowl the unplayable ball even when you are past 150,” he said. And he passed that landmark against the West Indies on several occasions: 220 at Queen’s Park Oval in 1971; 156 at the same venue in 1976; 205 in Bombay in the1978-79 series; 182 not out in Calcutta in the same series; 236 at Madras in 1983.None of those, however, gave him as much satisfaction as his unbeaten 117 in a match-saving cause at Kensington in 1971 and his 124 in the next match at Queen’s Park Oval when he made 220 in the second innings.Last dayThe effort in Barbados was made on the last day and it allowed India to manage a draw and go into the final Test with a 1-0 lead. In the final Test, Gavaskar made his first innings hundred with an unbearable toothache.”I was under orders from the manager. I couldn’t even take a pain-killing injection to relieve the pain,” he remembered. It might surprise many that he doesn’t rank his 102 at the Queen’s Park Oval in 1976 with the other two. This was a match in which India scored 406 in the last innings to win, but Gavaskar gave most of the credit to Gundappa Viswanath and Mohinder Amarnath.Having triumphed against the awesome West Indies fast bowlers of the past, there are some who might feel Gavaskar can score 1 000 against modest West Indies attacks of the current era.”I don’t think so. The pressures are different,” he said. “They are playing in front of lesser crowds in the stadia, but a much bigger audience on television. The pressures are there on the modern players and his West Indian attack is on a learning curve at the moment.”Gavaskar might have been on such a curve when he came to the Caribbean in 1971. Well, he certainly learned quickly. Ask Lord Relator.
