Everton must unleash Alex Iwobi on Wolves

Everton head into their clash with Wolves on Wednesday evening amid a spell of inconsistent form.

The Toffees have defeated Arsenal in the last month but they’ve also suffered some embarrassing results along the way.

With European football on the line, Carlo Ancelotti’s men somehow suffered a defeat to Sheffield United.

Everton didn’t look like scoring and succumbed to a goal from 17-year-old Daniel Jebbison.

If they are to have any chance of securing a spot among Europe’s finest next season, they will have to win against Wolves.

On the chalkboard

One area that Everton desperately need to improve in is going forward. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored 21 goals this season but the performances of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Richarlison are leaving plenty to be desired.

Sigurdsson was dropped to the bench against the Blades but Ancelotti’s tricky Brazilian has been in abject form for a while now.

He’s not scored since the beginning of March, nor has he assisted a goal since December.

With that in mind, the Toffees should consider turning to Alex Iwobi when they face Wolves.

The Nigerian has had an average season at Goodison Park and with only one league goal to his name throughout 2020/21, he needs to improve. After all, the 24-year-old earns £100k-per-week in Merseyside.

However, his solitary strike this term came against Wednesday night’s opposition.

Back in January, Everton defeated Wolves 2-1 at Molineux with Iwobi thriving on the right-hand side.

He not only scored but had the beating of the Old Gold backline on numerous occasions. He completed three of five dribbles and won an impressive seven ground duels.

The winger has very rarely lived up to Arsene Wenger’s tag of “dangerous” but on that night he was a rampant threat, terrorising Rayan Ait-Nouri.

Iwobi could have a similar impact if he plays from the left and dislodges Richarlison this week.

That’s because Wolves right-back Nelson Semedo has had a tricky first campaign in England. He was mauled by Lucas Digne when the pair last met while he has notoriously struggled with tricky attackers.

You only need to look at the performance of Nicolas Pepe back in January when Wolves beat Arsenal.

Pepe nutmegged the defender in the first half before surging into the penalty area and scoring a wonderful solo goal.

As Iwobi demonstrated against the Molineux outfit several months ago, he also has everything in his locker to beat a man.

Ancelotti needs to consider unleashing him from the off.

LFC fans delighted with Alisson update

A number of Liverpool supporters are delighted with the news that Alisson is set to sign a new deal at Anfield imminently.

The Brazilian has proven to be a colossal signing for the Reds, having arrived from Roma in the summer of 2018.

Along with Virgil van Dijk, Alisson helped turn Liverpool from a good team into a great one, with Champions League and Premier League glory sealed in back-to-back years.

The 28-year-old continued to be a key man in 2020/21, despite a dip in form after sadly losing his father, famously scoring a last-gasp winner at West Brom last month.

According to BBC Sport, Liverpool will open contract talks with the Brazil international after he returns from Copa America duty this summer, tying him down a new long-term deal.

Ipswich eyeing Pompey’s MacGillivray

Portsmouth chairman Michael Eisner is heading for a disaster with “very strong” goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray.

What’s the talk?

According to Portsmouth outlet The News, League One outfit Ipswich Town are showing an interest in Craig MacGillivray and they could swoop for the shot-stopper if he becomes a free agent next month. MacGillivray is out of contract at the end of June and the club opted against triggering a 12-month extension due to wage concerns, which has left him in limbo ahead of next season.

Ipswich are now eyeing up MacGillivray as they look to strengthen their own goalkeeping department. London News Online reported in May that fellow League One side Charlton Athletic are also considering a swoop for MacGillivray on a free transfer.

Back in 2018, Pompey journalist Neil Allen praised the “very strong” keeper after he saved a penalty against Accrington Stanley, after giving the spot-kick away. He told The News:

“You can talk about his mentality that he gave that away but he made the save.

“So he’s a very strong, mentally, keeper as well and he’s been a really good signing,

“That’s been his only big mistake all season and it still didn’t go in.

“He doesn’t drop anything when he comes for crosses as well, is very confident, and he made a couple of good saves later on as well.”

Pompey fans will be fuming

Portsmouth fans will be fuming with this news as they could be about to watch their Player of the Season leave the club to join one of their rivals for nothing. MacGillivray was named Portsmouth’s Player of the Season last month after picking up an incredible 64% of the fan votes, which highlights how highly the Pompey fans rate the goalkeeper and why they would be livid at the prospect of him joining Charlton or Ipswich.

Danny Cowley’s side could be competing for promotion against Charlton and Ipswich in League One next season and MacGillivray could, potentially, help one of them beat Portsmouth to an automatic promotion or play-off place.

He has proven his quality at this level, as shown by his Player of the Season award, and could, therefore, be a terrific addition to Charlton or Ipswich’s squad. This means that they could be strengthened by signing MacGillivray, whilst Portsmouth are weakened by losing their best goalkeeper and getting nothing back in return.

Whilst it is understandable that Portsmouth chairman Michael Eisner is hesitant to offer big money to MacGillivray in a new deal, given the current pandemic and the financial implications, the club must work hard to find a better solution to this situation.

MacGillivray has proven to be worth his £2.7k-per-week deal and extending his contract with a small pay rise and the promise of a hefty promotion bonus and wage increase that could see him earn the wages he wants if the club secures Championship football for the 2022/23 campaign makes perfect sense.

This could help Portsmouth avoid disaster and would allow MacGillivray to either get the wages he wants or be allowed to leave on a free transfer next summer, as part of the deal.

If the club are not able to work out a contract like that and MacGillivray does go on to join one of their rivals, it will be a major blow for Pompey and the fans will rightly be devastated by it.

CPFC: Fans react to James McCarthy update

Crystal Palace midfielder James McCarthy, who has been linked with a move to Celtic, will leave the club at the end of the season.

McCarthy is out of contract in a matter of weeks, and it seems as if the 30-year-old will be just one of a number of players to walk out of Selhurst Park for nothing this summer.

The Athletic’s Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam wrote a piece mainly on Patrick van Aanholt’s pending Eagles exit on Monday.

In that story, Woosnam added that the club has 12 players with deals set to expire, with McCarthy, Mamadou Sakho, Wayne Hennessey and Connor Wickham set to join van Aanholt in leaving for nothing.

As mentioned, McCarthy has been linked with a move to Celtic Park, with Newcastle United also now in the race to sign the central midfielder.

Aston Villa front-runners to sign Buendia

Aston Villa have reportedly jumped ahead of Arsenal in the battle to sign Norwich City star Emiliano Buendia this summer.

The Lowdown: Buendia stars for Norwich

The Argentine enjoyed a superb season in the Championship, scoring 15 goals and registering 16 assists and winning the league’s Player of the Season award.

Despite Norwich’s promotion to the Premier League, he has been linked with a move away from Carrow Road this summer, with Villa in contention to snap him up.

The Latest: Villa jump ahead of Arsenal

According to Football Insider, Villa are now ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign the 24-year-old, with the two clubs reportedly going ‘head to head’ for his services.

It is claimed that Villa have made ‘progress’ in their efforts to bring Buendia to Villa Park, with the midfielder potentially being able to leave Norwich for less than £40m.

The Verdict: Superb potential signing

Buendia has the potential to be a fabulous signing for Dean Smith’s side, with his incredible end product demonstrated last season. He has also shown that he can shine in the Premier League, chipping in with seven assists in 2019/20 despite Norwich’s relegation.

The prospect of the 24-year-old joining up with the likes of Jack Grealish and Ollie Watkins (23 goals and 17 assists combined this term) is a mouthwatering one, so he could be a significant addition ahead of the new campaign if Villa manage to fend off Arsenal for his signature.

Sachin Tendulkar's brilliance sinks the Australians

India bounced back after their dismal performance in Pune to win the third One-Day International played at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Indore, against Australia by a whopping margin of 118 runs. Australia were all out for 181 runs in 35.5 overs, chasing a tough victory target of 300 in 50 overs. The day clearly belonged to the world’s premier batsman, Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. After being put into bat by Steve Waugh, India really wanted Tendulkar to fire on all guns. Waugh’s choice of bowling first was based on the fact that there was some moisture on the track. Tendulkar initially tamed the bowling by playing sensibly, curtailing his extravagant stroke play but once he got to his fifty, he cut loose.Tendulkar made 139 runs off 125 balls decorating his knock with 19 classy strokes past the ropes. This was Tendulkar’s 28th ODI hundred and in the end it proved to be a match winning one. Indore went into the record books today, Tendulkar becoming the first batsman in the history of ODI cricket to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs. In the course of the Indian innings, Glenn McGrath became the third Australian to reach 200 wickets, when he bowled Vijay Dahiya for nought.Chasing India’s imposing total of 299/8 in 50 overs, Australia was bound to struggle. On a pitch with uneven bounce and keeping low, fluent stroke play was not really on. The fact that Australia’s best ODI batsman Mark Waugh was out of the team with a fractured finger must have been a big let down for his twin brother Steve Waugh. Australia’s policy of rotation seems not to be working; today they rested their in-form batsman Matthew Hayden.Damien Martyn and Adam Gilchrist were the opening batsmen today and they put on 46 runs. Martyn (19) looked good, but was caught behind off Srinath. Gilchrist played a cracker of an innings of 63 (70 balls, 10 fours, 1 six) that included 22 runs from an over bowled by Zaheer Khan. It was an amazing display of power hitting, with the sequence reading as 4,0,6,4,4,4 as Australia rekindled hopes of a victory. Gilchrist was given a couple of reprieves by Ganguly and Dahiya soon after he got to his fifty. Gilchrist’s dismissal at 102 in the 20th over resulted in a tailspin and Australia never recovered from it.Gilchrist’s tame dismissal came about when he slapped a full toss from Harbhajan Singh straight to Ganguly at mid-wicket. Ajit Agarkar (3/38), Harbhajan Singh (3/37) and Srinath (2/34) were just about too much for the jaded Aussies. Ricky Ponting (23) failed again. Bevan (7) was bowled of an inside edge, cutting at a ball to close to his body. Harvey (1) and Lehmann (1) did not apply themselves and gave easy catches when they should have given support to their captain marvel, Steve Waugh. Andrew Symonds was unlucky to be given out, caught behind by the umpire. The ball clearly hit the pad on its way to the keeper and the bat was too far away from the ball. There wasn’t much fight left in the Aussies as Steve Waugh (23) holed out a catch in the deepafter Shane Warne (18) had run himself out.Earlier, Ganguly dropped himself down from the opener’s role and asked Rahul Dravid to open the innings with Tendulkar. Dravid (15) was caught behind by Gilchrist off an impressive Damien Fleming. VVS Laxman joined Tendulkar in the middle and steadied the Indian innings. They put on a match winning partnership of 199 runs for the second wicket in just 29.4 overs. Laxman made 83 (88 balls, 6 fours) before being run out. These two batsmen have had moments of indiscretion in running between wickets and this time it was Laxman’s turn to get out.India slipped from 231/1 in the 38th over to 299/8 in 50 overs. Damien Fleming shone with his bowling and finished with the most respectable figures of 10-1-34-2. His figures were achieved in the middle of a deluge of runs when Tendulkar was going full throttle. Ganguly lasted only for three balls before sending the ball high in the air to give Bevan an easy catch off the bowling of Fleming. McGrath came back and dismissed Tendulkar, caught by Fleming while going for a pull shot of a rising delivery. McGrath also accounted for Dahiya (0) and Dinesh Mongia (4). Ajit Agarkar (1) fell lbw to Ian Harvey, soon aftersurviving a big leg before appeal from McGrath.Hemang Badani, who made a hundred in the previous match, swung Warne for a massive six over long on but ran himself out after making 23 runs off 25 balls. Today was yet another day that belonged to the little master. Tendulkar played almost all the strokes in the game. A delicate late cut off Martyn to the third man fence, a paddle sweep off Symonds, a cracking inside out cover drive off Warne, pulling and cutting McGrath, it was all Tendulkar in full flow.Cammie Smith, the match referee did not waste much time in declaring Tendulkar as the Man of the Match.India are 2-1 up in the five match series. The next game will be played on April 3 in the east coast harbour city of Vishakapatnam.
