Ex-NCFC star braced for bids for £30m ace

Former Norwich City star Jon Newsome insists there will be bidders for Max Aarons this summer, in an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern.

The right-back has been in exceptional form for the Canaries this season.

Aarons has made 45 appearances in the Championship, with Norwich comfortably winning the second-tier title.

He has subsequently been linked with a move away; The Independent reports that there is interest from West Ham United and Everton in a potential swoop.

Aarons is just 21 and he has already totted up 130 appearances for the Canaries, even playing in the Premier League last term.

He seems certain to return to the top-flight ahead of the beginning of the 2021/22 season, be it with Norwich or another English club.

Newsome thinks there will be bids for the star and it leaves the club with a dilemma they will have to solve should a big-money bid be tabled.

He told TT: “Max Aarons, the number of games he’s played for such a young lad is amazing and he’s learning his craft.

“He’ll be really, really keen to be playing Premier League football so I expect clubs to sniff around him. Norwich City have got a decision to make.

“They either slam the door in somebody’s face, firmly shut, and we have no conversation or if the numbers are right, will they be tempted? It’s a big, big question.”

Old Firm: Celtic need to axe Jonjoe Kenny

The sad reality for Celtic this weekend is that, when they entertain their biggest rivals in the Old Firm derby, they will have nothing but pride at stake.

This had been an arduous campaign for the Bhoys and, after being disgraced a couple of weeks ago by the same opposition, the Parkhead outfit will need to be much improved.

On the chalkboard

There are a number of ways Celtic can improve upon their performance in the Scottish Cup a fortnight ago.

They will be helped by the return of James Forrest, while Odsonne Edouard rediscovering his scoring touch would certainly be a big help. Even removing the inconsistent Ryan Christie from the side would be beneficial.

However, John Kennedy could take a giant leap towards gaining victory by axing Jonjoe Kenny from the starting XI. During Celtic’s 2-0 defeat to Rangers a few weeks ago, he was one of the biggest culprits, putting in a horrific display at right full-back.

Together with Diego Laxalt, the two defenders were a mess at the back and caused Kennedy’s men to slip to a dismal defeat.

Kenny was particularly bad with his marking for both goals in that fixture. He allowed Steven Davis to get the better of him as he acrobatically fired home from close range for the opener.

The Everton loanee then failed to track Ryan Kent for their second strike of the game. Joe Aribo turned Laxalt inside out on the right flank and then fired in a teasing ball into the area.

Kent got across Kenny, who then diverted the ball into his own net in unfortunate circumstances. However, had he been more alive to the situation the goal could have been avoided.

It was a performance which was not only described as a “nightmare” by Celtic podcaster Paul John Dykes, but also a “horror show.”

It’s safe to say that the £15,000-per-week earner has not been an impressive capture since signing temporarily in the winter transfer window.

His Old Firm derby performances have been alarmingly abject. Kenny was also at fault during the 1-1 draw at Paradise back in March as his sloppy backpass allowed Rangers to earn a corner and, from the resulting set-piece, he let Alfredo Morelos come behind him at the back post to find the net.

The 24-year-old’s marking clearly leaves a lot to be desired and Kennedy must search for alternatives on Sunday. He could move to a back three and push one of his attacking players into a wing-back role, or he could look towards Anthony Ralston.

The full-back has only made one appearance all season so it would be a surprise to see him play, but the interim boss simply cannot risk Kenny.

He has been poor in two consecutive Old Firm clashes; to back him again would be foolish.

Thompson decision has killed Wednesday

Former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Carlton Palmer has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that the Owls’ decision to hold onto Neil Thompson for so long was a gamble that has not paid off.

Thompson stepped in as caretaker manager following Tony Pulis’ dismissal at the end of last December but was unable to improve the relegation-threatened side’s fortunes.

Darren Moore was eventually appointed in March to permanently succeed Pulis in the Hillsborough dugout, and despite some ok results Wednesday are on the brink of going down to League One – they are three points from safety with one game remaining.

For Palmer, owner Dejphon Chansiri did not do things fast enough.

Speaking exclusively to FFC about some of the issues at Wednesday this season, Palmer said:

“I think the bit that’s killed them was, I think he [Chansiri] gambled on Neil Thompson for too long. Held on the caretaker manager, I think maybe he wanted to get to the end of the season and thought they’d be safe and then get a manager in without having to pay compensation.

“It was the wrong move. He should have got the manager in at the time. And they will be kicking themselves, they will be kicking themselves.”

Since taking over from Thompson, Moore has done fairly well in the Hillsborough dugout, picking up some big wins.

That includes the impressive 5-0 victory against Cardiff City at the start of April, so perhaps Wednesday would have been in a better position in the Championship had Chansiri made a permanent appointment earlier.

Claim dropped on potential NUFC takeover

Mark Douglas has dropped a big claim on Mike Ashley’s Newcastle United takeover power play.

The Lowdown: Ashley seeks control

Last week, the club confirmed that HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) were discontinuing their investigation into their taxes, which in turn prompted Ashley to refer to ‘dark forces’ which were preventing them from becoming the ‘powerhouse that the fans deserve’.

The chief executive of Sports Direct also launched an anti-competition lawsuit against the Premier League with regards to their decision-making process in the failed deal between him and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium.

With damages to be claimed, Ashley is trying to get as much out of the failed bid as he can, as he aims to be fully prepared for the ensuing legal battle against the Premier League.

The Latest: Douglas drops PIF claim

Writing in his latest piece for The Chronicle, Douglas has claimed that Ashley’s takeover power play is part of a continued attempt to keep the KSA’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) from being tempted by the possibility of investing in other clubs.

PIF have reportedly been interested in investing in Inter Milan, and Douglas believes that Ashley’s latest power play is a way to keep them fully focused on the Tyneside club.

The Verdict: PIF vital to takeover

PIF are vital to getting the original deal back on track, and a pathway must be cleared for them to come back onto the table.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-updates-2/” title=”Newcastle updates! (2)” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

If this is not done, then PIF know there are other opportunities elsewhere, namely Inter, to which they can turn instead if all else fails.

Nonetheless, a crucial period in Newcastle’s history is coming up as the legal battle could be set to commence after the season finishes, with the Magpies hoping for a positive result against the Premier League.

In other news, find out what other big claim on the potential takeover has been dropped.

Celtic: Hapoel Be’er Sheva planning Bitton approach

Israeli side Hapoel Be’er Sheva will make an approach for Celtic man Nir Bitton this summer.

It’s not the first time Bitton has been linked with a summer exit this year. Back in February, reports claimed that Maccabi Tel Aviv were weighing up a move for the versatile Hoops man at the end of the season.

Bitton, who has made 233 appearances for Celtic, has been in and out of the Hoops side this season, making just 11 league starts, all of which have come as a centre-back.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/celtic-updates-2/” title=”Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Celtic set to receive Bitton approach

According to one outlet from Israel, cited by The Scotsman, Bitton is a target for Hapoel Be’er Sheva, who look set to make a move for the player Colin Watt described as ‘Mr Reliable’.

It seems as if Hapoel Be’er Sheva have a summer rebuild of their own to deal with over the coming months and Bitton is thought to be on their transfer wishlist.

The Verdict: Celtic have a decision to make

Should Celtic receive a bid for Bitton, new CEO Dominic McKay and the rest of the Hoops hierarchy may have a big decision to make.

Bitton, on £14,000-a-week at Parkhead, can play as a defensive midfielder and a centre-back, so his versatility could be handy for the Hoops going forward.

He still has over two years remaining on his Celtic deal, so we feel the club should be under no pressure to part ways with the player this summer.

It could be extremely important for a new director of football and manager to be through the door before the summer window opens, for them to then have a major say on Bitton’s future – buying or selling players before a new boss arrives feels like a recipe for disaster.

Norris says Rodrigo not in Leeds’ best XI

David Norris has told Football FanCast that Rodrigo could play a big part at Leeds next season but will have to work his way into Marcelo Bielsa’s starting XI.

The Spaniard arrived from Valencia in a record deal last summer, but an injury-hit campaign has restricted the striker to just 14 Premier League starts from the 26 matchday squads he was named in.

Rodrigo scored just three times in his first 22 league appearances but ended the season in impressive form in front of goal and started ahead of Patrick Bamford on the final day.

Having struck three times in just 43 minutes in two substitute outings against both Tottenham and Burnley, Bielsa rewarded the 30-year-old with starts in Leeds’ final two Premier League matches – both scoring once and assisting once to help the Yorkshire outfit claim a ninth-place finish.

Despite a strong end to the campaign, Norris doesn’t believe that Rodrigo is currently in Leeds’ best team.

Asked whether he could see him starting in front of either Jack Harrison or Raphinha, he exclusively told Football FanCast:

“I can’t see it now. We said about the front three being as good as anyone in the league at times and on their day.

“He looks like he’s got something and Bielsa looks like he likes him, so he must have something. I can see him coming back for pre-season and I think he’s got a big part to play next season.”
