Charlton: Adkins’ unsung hero vs Sunderland

Charlton Athletic bolstered their League One play-off ambitions with a huge victory over fellow promotion hopefuls Sunderland on Saturday afternoon, and arguably, midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey ran the show.

Nigel Adkins’ side made it three games unbeaten under his tenure and eight unbeaten overall, moving the Addicks to within one point of the top six, with only seven games left to play this season.

An own goal from Josh Scowen and a close-range finish from Alex Gilbey saw the Black Cats’ own 14-match unbeaten run come to an end.

After the match, The Valley faithful voted for their ‘Man of the Match’ on social media, and goalkeeper Ben Amos won it, taking a 65% share of the votes.

Indeed, that was rather deserved considering SofaScore graded him as the Addicks’ best player on the pitch with a rating of 7.8, only Aiden McGeady from the home side managed better.

However, it was Forster-Caskey who put in an industrious performance in the heart of the pitch, so much so that he merits far more plaudits and perhaps was their unsung hero on the day.

The 26-year-old dynamo recorded more touches (52) than any other Charlton player, merely showing the sort of influence he has on this side – everything ran through him, and it paid off.

In return, Adkins saw his box-to-box maestro deliver three key passes, which ended up being a solid chance created once every seven passes, as per SofaScore. Only one other player bettered his 73% passing accuracy as well.

Once again, no other Addicks starter was able to match this creativity, whilst defensively, he proved to be just as productive.

Forster-Caskey made a squad-high four tackles, which was double the amount of the next best Ian Maatsen, and one more than the whole Addicks defence combined. He also put in two interceptions, thwarting the league’s third-best midfield, whilst he won seven of his duels, too.

Previously lauded as “unbelievable,” the 5 foot 10 ace has always been noted for his pressing and high work rate.

Ex-Charlton boss Lee Bowyer said to LondonNewsOnline last month: “If you do see your teammate running and fighting and pressing then it has a natural reaction. You have to go with him because if not you stand out like a sore thumb. He does have that impact. He’s been here since day one when I was here. He does have that aura in the dressing room.”

Forster-Caskey was dominant for the Addicks on Saturday afternoon, as evident by his lucrative returns above. Amos may have made the standout impact between the sticks, stopping the Black Cats in their tracks but the long-serving midfielder deserves plenty of praise.

He was Charlton’s unsung hero.

Everton fans laud Bernard transfer update

Many Everton fans have been left to laud a transfer update on Bernard as Fichajes have reported that Manuel Pellegrini wants to sign him for Real Betis.

As per the news outlet, the Brazil international is currently under contract at the Goodison Park faithful until 2022, and is valued at €12m (£10.4m), which would give the Merseyside club a nice profit if they were to sell him as they signed the 28-year-old on a free transfer back in August 2018.

Bernard has not really had that much time on the pitch for Carlo Ancelotti’s team so far in the 2020/21 term, with a mere 15 games played in total over all competitions (Transfermarkt), and so the winger would not be a big loss to the Toffees should they let him go to play in La Liga.

Howey backs NUST’s fundraising attempt

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Steve Howey, who made 270 appearances during his career, has backed the Newcastle United Supporters trust who are trying to raise enough money to buy a 1% stake in the club, once Mike Ashley leaves.

The trust believes they will require about £3 million to have enough money to purchase a 1% ownership in the club, once new owners come in.

The initiative has already more than £50,000 and is being backed by people such as Alan Shearer, Rob Lee and George Caulkin, who is an ambassador for the move, and considering his strong links to Amanda Staveley that appears a smart move.

Speaking on why there’s nothing wrong with fans trying to own some of their club and what should happen to the money if they aren’t successful, Howey told FFC:

“I think there’s nothing wrong with actually trying to do it but obviously you’ve got fans that will be thinking ‘what’s the point’ and that it’s a waste of time.

“If you can raise enough funds for it then it’ll be absolutely brilliant but if the new owners don’t want the money that’s been raised then surely it can go to different charities around Newcastle.”

Mike Ashley thought he had eventually sold the club almost 12 months ago when he accepted a big from PCP Capital Partners, only for the Premier League to block the deal.

The Magpies currently sit six points above the relegation zone with just seven games remaining which will keep Ashley’s valuation of the club intact.

Mills lauds Dallas as Leeds contract looms

Danny Mills believes that Stuart Dallas’ rumoured new contract at Leeds United is richly deserved, describing the midfielder as ‘outstanding’.

The Whites have excelled on their return to the Premier League this season, picking up some memorable results and comfortably ensuring safety. A number of individuals have shone for Leeds, but Dallas is arguably a contender in the Player of the Year stakes following an exceptional campaign.

The 30-year-old has shone in various roles, scoring seven goals and registering two assists, and a new contract is rumoured to be coming his way.

Dallas contract richly deserved, says Mills

Speaking to Football Insider, Mills waxed lyrical over Dallas, saying that a new deal would be fully deserved:

“That’s what football should be. If you do well you get rewarded. You shouldn’t be rewarded for failure, you shouldn’t be rewarded for poor performances.

“He’s been outstanding this season. Good luck to him and he deserves whatever rise he gets.”

Transfer Tavern take

Dallas is a priceless player for Leeds, not always standing out as a star turn to neutral supporters but doing so much for the team in terms of industry and underrated quality (winning 2.1 tackles per game), as outlined by his two goals in the 2-1 win at Manchester City. Indeed, his seven-goal haul in the league is bettered only by centre-forward Patrick Bamford in Bielsa’s squad.

The 30-year-old isn’t getting any younger, but there is no reason why he can’t be James Milner-esque and stick around in the top flight well into his 30s given his fitness levels.

A new contract is just reward for a superb season, as Dallas continues to go from strength to strength at Elland Road.

Howey claims Zaha’s attitude holds him back

In an exclusive interview with The Transfer Tavern, Steve Howey, who made 271 appearances during his career, has claimed that Wilfried Zaha’s attitude on the pitch is what’s holding him back from a move to a bigger club.

Zaha did get his move to a big club when he was signed for Manchester United in 2013 by Sir Alex Ferguson, however he failed to make an impact at Old Trafford when David Moyes was appointed and eventually returned back to Crystal Palace in 2015.

The Ivory Coast international has once again been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park with Arsenal holding a strong long term interest in the 28-year old, who has two years left on his current contract.

Speaking on how Zaha keeps getting linked with big clubs and why his attitude on the pitch may be holding him back, Howey told The Transfer Tavern:

“He’s been linked with everybody and obviously he got his move to Man United which didn’t work out but now, as a player, he can be devastating on his day.

“Sometimes I don’t get a great vibe from him attitude-wise and I just think at times you look at him and I’m not 100% convinced. I think that’s what probably puts some clubs off him because he’s either breathtaking or non-existent.”

Roy Hodgson has given Zaha a lot more freedom to express himself this season having deployed the traditional winger as Palace’s main focal point through the middle.

This decision has resulted in Zaha having his second-best season in front of goal for Palace having scored nine goals and registered two assists in 23 league games.

Spurs edge closer to Erik ten Hag

Tottenham Hotspur have moved one step closer to filling their managerial vacancy this week.

According to Italian transfer guru Fabrizo Romano, the Premier League outfit have scheduled a “direct meeting” with the Ajax boss and he’s “among the candidates” to become the next manager of Spurs.

It’s also claimed that the 51-year-old is open to leaving the Eredivisie champions this summer, which is something Romano alludes to further in a separate column for the Guardian.

Ten Hag could be seeking a fresh challenge having won everything there is to win domestically in Holland, where he has amassed a phenomenal 73% win rate since December 2017.

Now that things appear to be in motion, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy and much of the Hotspur faithful should start to get a little more excited as the Dutchman could well be the only ideal candidate remaining.

After Jose Mourinho was sacked over a week ago, both RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann and Leicester City’s Brendan Rodgers quickly emerged as Spurs’ preferred options to take the reins.

However, Levy was quickly stopped in his tracks – the 33-year-old has since been confirmed as Bayern Munich’s next manager, whilst the Foxes boss ruled himself out of the running as he’s, understandably, more than happy in the Midlands.

It’s thought that the Spurs chief is seeking an attack-minded coach to replace the ‘Special One’ after the Portuguese was said to have “sucked the culture out of the club” and divided the dressing room, as per The Athletic.

Roberto Martinez and Gareth Southgate are two other candidates still on the table, but neither would fit the aforementioned M.O. so Levy must ensure he convinces ten Hag enough in this upcoming meeting.

The 51-year-old has revolutionised Ajax into one of the more exciting teams in Europe, predominantly playing a 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1 system – similar to Mauricio Pochettino.

Both Poch and ten Hag went to battle in that famous Champions League semi-final in 2019, so the fans and Levy alike should know too well the style of football on offer.

He has transformed and developed many a young player in the three-and-a-half years he’s been at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, taking inspiration from the Ajax legend, as well as Pep Guardiola.

Matthijs de Ligt, Donny van de Beek, Frenkie de Jong, and Ryan Gravenberch are just four names that he has had a major influence on, for example.

In terms of who is left out there, ten Hag would surely be Spurs’ dream Mourinho successor and the fact that the two parties will have a discussion about coming together next season should have many in north London absolutely buzzing.

Celtic could appoint Neil McGuinness as DoF

The Celtic boardroom must be a hive of activity right now. The Bhoys hierarchy are searching for a new manager while they also require a director of football.

It has been all change in recent months for the Hoops with both Neil Lennon and Nick Hammond departing.

Hammond’s exit has left the door open for Celtic to create a new position which has been much talked about.

A director of football would completely revolutionise the scene at Paradise and should streamline their recruitment process.

However, who could that honourable title go to? Manchester City’s Fergal Harkin appears to be the number one choice right now but if Eddie Howe becomes the new manager, it could be his companion from Bournemouth, Richard Hughes.

That said, Celtic should forget about both and consider Neil McGuinness instead. According to The Daily Record, he is one of the names in the frame to be given the job and judging by his experience, he’d be a first-class successor to Hammond.

McGuinness started his career at Celtic so knows the surroundings well, having been a scout in the club’s recruitment team.

He has since worked with Xavi at the Aspire Academy in Qatar and the 39-year-old is now the Director of Scouting at MLS side Columbus Crew.

Since he moved to America, he has built a title-winning side with Columbus Crew, winning the Eastern Conference and then the MLS Cup in 2020.

Speaking in December last year, he said: “I have been lucky enough to experience a lot of big days and nights in my career so far and been part of trophy-winning teams. You never get tired of wanting that feeling and the team winning the Eastern Conference was another experience I won’t forget quickly.”

Although that might be one of the finest moments of his career, it was unearthing a certain Virgil van Dijk that McGuinness has become famous for.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-lampard-klimala-ajer-gossip” title= “Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

He was part of the scouting network that brought the Dutchman to Paradise and since then, he’s moved to England and become one of the best players in the world with Liverpool.

With that in mind, bringing him back to Celtic as the head of an entire department could see similar levels of success achieved.

Of course, Van Dijk is an anomaly; there are few better than him on the planet, but Celtic’s recruitment would surely improve significantly.

After all, McGuinness is about as passionate as they come when it comes to data analysis and watching football.

In an interview with the BBC, he explained: “I’d been doing freelance scouting since I was 13, 14; creating custom databases, watching a lot of football from all over the world.”

Despite a huge preference put on data scouting in the modern game, McGuinness reckons there is no substitute for watching a player live and in the flesh.

“Even before you watch a player you can look back on every game he’s played and use the video analysis software to make a custom video report. But there is still a huge need for watching the player live, having your own opinion and speaking to people within the game about him,” he commented.

“There have been times when I’ve watched a player on video, spoken to the management staff, they’ve watched the video, everyone’s been happy, then seen him live and within five minutes know that he will never play for us,” McGuinness added.

Crucially, however, the scout recognises that a manager always has to be in place before recruitment happens.

Coincidentally, he spoke in the wake of Ronny Deila’s departure in 2016, saying: “The recent recruitment of guys like Carlton Cole, Nadir Ciftci, Colin Kazim-Richards – not including some of the loan players who have come to the club – have just not been good enough and the overall talent pool within the squad has dropped because of it.”

McGuinness continued: “This in turn has made the supporters start to ask questions, so the pressure is on to make sure that the players being identified and monitored are of the level that Celtic should aspire to, in advance of the new manager being installed.”

Celtic now find themselves in a similar boat with the additions of Vasilis Barkas, Albian Ajeti and co. worsening the talent pool available to them.

The former Bhoys figure clearly knows what he’s talking about and would be a perfect addition at such a crucial moment in Celtic’s history.

Dermot Desmond simply has to consider him.
