Sunderland: Neil could benefit from Leadbitter injury

Lee Johnson has breathed fresh life into this Sunderland team and they are now currently sitting comfortably in the playoff places.

Though, if there was one negative to take from his reign at the Stadium of Light, it would be constant injury problems.

On the chalkboard

Johnson’s tenure has been plagued with fitness and injury concerns. At the moment, he has three centre-backs missing in Bailey Wright, Jordan Willis and Tom Flanagan. He is also missing his full-backs in Conor McLaughlin and Denver Hume.

You can also add new signing Ross Stewart to that list and midfield stalwart Grant Leadbitter too.

The 35-year-old limped off the field of play during Sunderland’s draw with Crewe after just a matter of minutes. Leadbitter had been introduced as a substitute but went down holding his shoulder and he looked to be in some pain.

A stretcher was brought onto the field but fortunately, he was able to walk from the field of play. That being said, he suffered a dislocation to his shoulder and will now face a period on the sidelines.

The good news is that it won’t require surgery. However, if Leadbitter was to suffer the same injury again, he would have to go under the knife.

Time to unleash Neil

With Luke O’Nien currently playing at centre-back and Max Power playing at right-back, it leaves Johnson’s side quite stretched in the middle of the park.

Elliot Embleton was loaned out in the January transfer window too so the manager could have to pick from the club’s academy crop to fill the void.

Carl Winchester has now started successive games but if they’re looking for alternative options, they simply have to unleash Daniel Neil.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-sunderland-news-and-gossip” title=” Latest Sunderland news and gossip!”]

The 19-year-old made a late cameo in the dying embers during Sunderland’s 2-0 win over Rochdale, an appearance that marked just his second in League One. He is rarely seen in the first-team but as Johnson’s selection of Oliver Younger told us last weekend, there is a space for young talent if they work hard.

Neil certainly has those qualities and could add a sense of freshness to the Sunderland midfield if chosen. Possessing the ability to play as a number 10 or slightly further back, there are plenty of roles to suit his qualities and attributes.

Those already with the Mackems obviously rate him highly too. Speaking about the teenager just before the season kicked off, O’Nien commented: “Dan has been exceptional right throughout pre-season.”

The midfielder continued: “Every day in training, he’s like a dancer with those magic feet. He’s creating and scoring goals in training all the time.”

Johnson has favoured two more defensive-minded players in his midfield since taking charge but he evidently loves attacking players. You only need to look at the way Aiden McGeady and Charlie Wyke have contributed this term. Between them, they have been involved in 35 league goals.

Add a more offensive player in the style of Neil to the equation and you could see the Black Cats scoring even more.

It’s a frightening prospect but Neil could certainly get more game time now. Leadbitter’s injury has opened up a vacant spot that Sunderland’s youngsters could benefit from.

AND in other news, Imagine him & McGeady: SAFC must land 29-goal ace who Moyes once dubbed “priceless”…

Man Utd must sell in-form Lingard

Manchester United could be in line for a summer windfall, with West Ham United interested in signing Jesse Lingard on a permanent deal.

The England midfielder has been in exhilarating form for the Hammers since he arrived at the London Stadium on a loan deal, triggering suggestions that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could look to reintroduce him into the Red Devils’ squad and offer him a new contract.

However, reports from Claret and Hugh indicate that West Ham have made Lingard a priority signing in the summer. The Red Devils should also make sure this is a transfer which goes through.

Despite his great form under David Moyes, having netted five goals and notched three assists in just seven Premier League appearances, the 28-year-old seemingly no longer has a place in the Manchester United squad.

The likes of Marcus Rashford, Mason Greenwood, Daniel James and even Amad Diallo all appear to be preferred by Solskjaer. Lingard has made just 38 starts under the Norwegian since the 48-year-old replaced Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford, only appearing three times during 2020/21 before leaving for West Ham United.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/manchester-united-latest-transfer-injury-news-from-old-trafford” title=”Check out the latest Man United transfer rumours and injury news!”]

His form has also taken a drastic downturn under Solskjaer, scoring just seven goals and providing five assists. For context, he contributed more than that during his last full season under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho alone.

For a player who seemingly has no future at Old Trafford, it would also be clever for Ed Woodward to sell whilst the 28-year-old still holds some value.

He will have just one year left on his current Red Devils’ deal come the summer, so his £13.5m Transfermarkt value will only serve to fall as that date creeps ever nearer.

It would serve Manchester United well to cash in on West Ham’s interest in Lingard whilst they still can.

AND in more news,  Solskjaer has been hit with what could be a damaging injury ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash with Brighton…

Brendan Rodgers backs John Kennedy

Former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers has urged the club to retain John Kennedy this summer, whether as manager or as an assistant to a new face.

Kennedy was placed in interim charge after Neil Lennon resigned with the Hoops’ title defence in tatters.

He has only taken charge of two games so far, overseeing a 1-0 win at home to Aberdeen before a goalless draw away to Dundee United.

This weekend, he will hope to guide Celtic to a morale-boosting victory in the Old Firm derby, significantly boosting his chances of a permanent role in the process.

Rodgers full of praise after time with Kennedy

Kennedy worked under Rodgers as first team coach during the Northern Irishman’s successful three-year reign in Glasgow. In that time, Celtic won two domestic trebles and completed a historic unbeaten season in 2016/17.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Rodgers expressed his confidence that Kennedy has the credentials for the long-term manager’s position.

“In my time there, he was an outstanding coach,” the Leicester City manager said.

“He’s worked at every level of the club so he knows the club inside out. He played for the club. He’s worked in scouting so he understands that. He’s worked in coaching. He’s worked at the top end of the academy teams and he’s worked with the first team.

“One thing is for sure, John being in the club is very important. If he didn’t get the job and another manager went in there, to have John Kennedy by your side is a great move.”

Were he to be overlooked by Celtic, Rodgers assured Kennedy that  other opportunities would almost certainly present themselves.

“I’ve got absolutely no question, whether with Celtic or another club, that he will go on and manage one day,” the 48-year-old said.

Transfer Tavern verdict

It remains too early to cast judgement on Kennedy, but if he can inspire Celtic to an Old Firm victory, oversee a respectable end to their league campaign and potentially win the Scottish League Cup, he would have to be a contender to get the job permanently.

If Celtic are eyeing a big-name appointment, though, they should not let the composition of the backroom team become a stumbling block in negotiations.

Michel entendeu perfeitamente o recado, a conversa franca aberta, olho no olho. Essa foi a melhor solução para terminar o campeonato na melhor posição que a gente puder e, no ano que vem, projetar uma nova vida – completou o diretor do Tricolor.

Leeds United tipped to sign Van Aanholt

Former Premier League striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has recently urged Leeds to make a move for Crystal Palace left-back Patrick van Aanholt.

The Whites have recently been linked with a move for Van Aanholt, whose future seems to be up in the air. Agbonlahor has now given his opinion about a possible Leeds move for the Dutchman.

Leeds target described as ‘Mr. Reliable’

Agbonlahor was recently in conversation with Football Insider and and he talked about Leeds’ links with a move for Van Aanholt. He described the left-back to be ‘Mr. Reliable’ and someone who’s very good going forward too.

The former Aston Villa man believes that he ‘would be a great signing’ for the Whites and not just that, but any club in the Premier League would love to have him the first-team.

Agbonlahor said: “He’s played a lot of Premier League games. He’s Mr Reliable and he’s very good going forward.

“I think that would be a great signing and it’s something that Leeds should pursue. Any club in the Premier League, not the top six or seven, but anyone below would love to have him. He’s a great left-back.”

The report from the Mirror has stated that Van Aanholt is now looking for the next move of his career as his contract ticks down and he’s one of the left-back options that the Whites are looking at.

Van Aanholt could indeed be a great move for Leeds

The 30-year-old Van Aanholt has loads of experience of playing in the Premier League, having played for Palace, Sunderland and even Chelsea. He has 21 Premier League goals to his name, along with 15 assists.

Ezgjan Alioski’s current contract at Elland Road runs out in the summer transfer window, meaning that Leeds could lose a left-back option in the next few months. Because of that, it is easy to see why Marcelo Bielsa wants another left-back in the side.

Van Aanholt’s Premier League experience suggests that he can certainly do a job for Leeds, even if only for the short-term while youngsters like Leif Davis break through and develop.

Man Utd fans fume at Pogba update

Some Manchester United fans have been left to fume at an update from Fabrizio Romano on the contract situation of Paul Pogba.

As per the Italian football journalist and transfer guru (via utdreport), there are currently no talks or agreements in place by the Red Devils to extend the former Juventus star’s deal at Old Trafford, and he is still looking for a new club.

While Pogba has certainly split opinion among the current fanbase, the central midfield player has upped his game in recent weeks, including scoring the winning goal at the San Siro against AC Milan to send Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team through into the quarter-final stage of the UEFA Europa League.

He can still be world class on his day, and MUFC should seriously consider trying to keep hold of the 28-year-old France international at all costs if they want to push on to try and win the Premier League and Champions League in the near future.

Rob Lee makes Brighton vs Newcastle claim

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, Rob Lee, who scored 45 goals for Newcastle United, believes the only reason Brighton will have a psychological edge over the Magpies on Saturday is because they won their last game, and thinks it’ll be two completely different teams facing off at the Amex.

Lee believes Newcastle will be feeling like they won their last game, however, because of the nature in which Jamaal Lascelles’ equaliser came about in the final seconds.

Brighton have become one of the best sides to watch under Graham Potter as they play attractive and attacking football, and Lee believes it will be two polar opposite ways of playing on Saturday evening.

Speaking on what the two teams’ last result will mean for Saturday and his expectations for the crunch game, Lee told FFC exclusively:

“I think the only reason they’ve got a psychological edge is because they won their last game and you always look back at your last result, but we didn’t lose our last game. So, we can look back at our last game like we won because of the late goal.

“I think it’s two teams that play different football. They probably play one of the best styles of football in the league but it’s two teams that have the same problem, they can’t score goals.

“They’ll play good football, and you know that they’ll try and play through you but, they have the same problem as us and that is they can’t score goals.”

Brighton put three past Newcastle in the reverse fixture, which is the most goals the Seagulls have scored in a single Premier League game this season.

Newcastle could find themselves in the bottom three before they kick-off on Saturday evening if Fulham beat Leeds tonight.
