WHAT RAPINOE SAID

Glenn Maxwell returns to Melbourne Stars training after mental health break

Glenn Maxwell will return from a six-week break from the professional game to lead the Melbourne Stars in their Big Bash campaign.Maxwell took a spell away from the game due to mental health reasons, after admitting to Australia coach Justin Langer that he was “not having that much fun at the moment” during the T20I series against Sri Lanka in October.ALSO READ: Maxwell has ‘set the right example’ for cricketers around the world – KohliHe missed the white-ball leg of Pakistan’s tour, but returned to play club cricket for Fitzroy-Doncaster three weeks ago and has joined up with the Stars’ pre-season camp ahead of their season opener against the Brisbane Heat on December 20.David Hussey, the Stars’ head coach, said he was delighted to have Maxwell in the camp.”We’re pleased to see Glenn in green and ready to lead our side with a big season ahead,” Hussey said. “He’s an incredible talent and a key part of our club but health and wellbeing comes first and it’s important that he’s been able to take some time away to focus on that.”We’re pretty excited with how our list looks and what we’re going to bring to the table. We were obviously very close last season and want to go that one step further. We’ve got a great bunch of guys and I can’t wait to see what this group can produce this summer.”Maxwell is also set to go under the hammer at next week’s IPL auction, and is expected to fetch a big-money bid.

PCB COO parts ways with the board after 25 years

Subhan Ahmed had been a central figure in the administration in a number of roles

Umar Farooq22-Nov-2019Subhan Ahmed, one of the PCB’s longest-serving officials, has decided to part ways with the board, after 25 years. Ahmed was currently the board’s chief operating officer but over the years has been a central figure in the administration in a number of roles – and until Wasim Khan’s arrival, he was effectively the board’s CEO.He had been on leave for the past three weeks, and on Friday, PCB chairman Ehsan Mani informed the Board of Governors that Ahmed would not be returning. As per the constitution of the board, a new appointment for the COO’s post has to be made within 90 days.”It has been a wonderful journey and an honour to represent the PCB at international forums as well as to contribute in the PCB’s transformation from a semi-professional to a thoroughly professional and one of the best-performing organisations of the country,” Ahmed said in a statement. “I am grateful to all my colleagues and peers for their support and guidance, and the role they played in my development as a professional and progression from a junior officer to the Chief Operating Officer. Without their backing and patronage, I would not have achieved my career targets and objectives. I will remain a well-wisher of the PCB.”Ahmed started his career as a statistician in 1994 in PCB’s Karachi office, and then moved to Lahore in 1996 to take up a role in PCB’s international operations. He has served the board in various capacities during his long tenure, being the general manager, senior general manager, and even acting director of human resources and administration. He was installed as the COO in 2010 by Ijaz Butt, then the PCB chairman, replacing the retiring Wasim Bari. From 2010 to 2018, Ahmed became a key figure in the administration. He was instrumental in ensuring a stable relationship with the ICC and the international community during an especially tumultuous period in Butt’s tenure. Ahmed was often the man the ICC reached out to – even relied on – in its dealings with the PCB through a number of major moments, including the terrorist attack on the Sri Lanka side in 2009 and the spot-fixing scandal the year after that. In the ultimately failed battle against the Big Three changes at the ICC in 2014 too, Ahmed played a key role, negotiating the PCB’s position with the BCCI, CA and the ECB.Since the arrival of Wasim Khan as the new chief executive officer, however, Ahmed’s powers had been drastically curtailed. The new PCB constitution, which was implemented this year, mandated that the COO’s functioning had to be prescribed, or directed by, the CEO in consultation with the chairman. Ahmed was overseeing four departments in the PCB administration: legal, security, infrastructure and real estate, and administration – a demotion of sorts as Khan took over the major responsibilities.Ahmed still retained influence within the board among other officials, which, it is believed ultimately became an issue. There was talk within the board of a growing “mistrust” between Ahmed and Khan which was brought to the attention of Mani. The situation became so that ultimately, it was clear that Ahmed would have to leave for Khan to have the space to work in his position.Mani, though was effusive in his praise for Ahmed’s years of service, and hinted at involving Ahmed for specific projects in the future.”Subhan has made outstanding contributions to the PCB with respect, humility and integrity. Over the past so many years, he was at the forefront when the PCB made changes to how it operated and negotiated lucrative commercial deals to ensure the sport continues to remain healthy and thrive in Pakistan. In this background, it is sad to see him depart,” Manis said in a statement.”Subhan will reflect on his time at the PCB with a lot of pride as the organisation came out of age during his watch and earned the reputation as one of the most respected cricket bodies in the world. That is his legacy and an inspiration for all those who are or will serve this great institution in years to come. On behalf of the PCB, I thank Subhan for his untiring services and wish him well for the future. The PCB would like to continue to benefit from his experience and we will be discussing a role based on specific projects.”

West Ham eyeing "monster" signing who could convince Paqueta to stay

West Ham United are approaching the business end of the campaign with much to fight for, sat in the lowest European spot in the Premier League – seventh – and preparing for a Europa League quarter-finals clash in April against high-flying German side Bayer Leverkusen.

David Moyes cannot seem to shake the polarity from his position in the dugout but he really has done so much for this club, clinching the Europa Conference League last season and bringing the squad to a fresh level of quality despite Declan Rice's £105m sale to Arsenal.

Arsenal players Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice

Whatever happens, it's clear that the Hammers will need to sign a striker in the off-season. Michail Antonio is ageing and persistently hampered by injury, Danny Ings has flattered to deceive at the London Stadium and Divin Mubama, aged 19, is clearly not trusted with a starring role, yet to start in the Premier League.

West Ham eyeing statement signing

According to Football Insider, West Ham are plotting an audacious swoop for Brentford centre-forward Ivan Toney, emboldened by suggestions that Arsenal have cooled their interest in the England international.

It's claimed that the Hammers want to make a 'statement signing' during the summer, and with suitors Chelsea also facing issues relating to financial regulations, the prospect of him moving to east London is becoming more palpable.

The Bees hope to cash in on their talisman in a deal approaching £100m. Candidly, it's hard to envisage a world where West Ham meet such staggering demands, but Toney wants to leave and the cogs might fall into place.

Why Ivan Toney would be perfect for West Ham

Toney is a proven marksman in the Premier League, scoring 20 goals from 33 top-flight fixtures last season before his lengthy suspension for breaching FA betting rules.

Having returned from his suspension in January, the 28-year-old bagged four goals from his first five Premier League matches of the current campaign, though he has plateaued across recent weeks as Thomas Frank's side nosedive, out of form and sinking closer toward the relegation zone.

Brentford striker Ivan Toney

Quite simply, he would be the dream acquisition for West Ham, an exceptional goalscorer with a combative attitude, deceptive link-up play and phase-building qualities. His tally of 12 big chances created in the Premier League last season was bettered only by Harry Kane's 14.

Moreover, he ranks among the top 1% of forwards across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for interceptions, the top 9% for clearances and the top 16% for aerial duels won per 90, as per FBref.

If West Ham were to succeed with this unlikely 'statement signing' it would be a portent of further riches in east London, perhaps even convincing current club-record £51m signing Lucas Paqueta to remain with the squad.

Paqueta is a maestro, multi-faceted and not shy to get stuck in and contribute defensively. West Ham have missed the mark on many occasions with high-cost acquisitions but they certainly didn't misfire with this one.

The Brazil international has been brilliant in the Premier League this season, scoring three goals and supplying five assists across 22 matches, creating nine big chances and averaging 1.5 key passes, 2.4 tackles, 6.8 ball recoveries and 8.1 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore.

He's elite, and as such, some of the big boys have noted his performances, with Manchester City prepared to pay £80m for his services last summer before a move was scuppered by an FA investigation into betting breaches.

It wouldn't be a surprise if the 26-year-old was at the centre of intense transfer speculation again in several months, with Pep Guardiola's side reported to be 'ready' to return for the midfielder, as per reports from this month.

With a star striker like Toney chucked into the mix, a real "monster" as described by his Brentford manager, West Ham would underscore their desire to thrive at the forefront of the European game and it might just be the perfect move to convince Paqueta to stay.

Rangers could unleash "important" £26k-p/w gem instead of Dessers

Glasgow Rangers face a sharp turnaround in matches as they take on Hibs in the Scottish Cup this evening, just three days after drawing 2-2 against Benfica in Lisbon.

The result was an excellent one, especially considering how many wide players Philippe Clement was missing, and the focus now turns to domestic matters.

Collectively, it was a solid team performance against the Portuguese giants, yet there were a few individuals who perhaps could have contributed more.

Yet again, it was Cyriel Dessers who let the side down due to a poor display in leading the line and this could cost him his place against Hibs.

Cyriel Dessers’ game in numbers vs Benfica

Although he has scored 16 goals this season, Dessers has missed more than his fair share of chances. Indeed, the Nigerian has missed 20 big chances in the league so far, and it proves that he is unpredictable in the final third.

In midweek, the 29-year-old took just 17 touches during the match, while he failed to make a single shot or succeed with any of his two dribble attempts.

Dessers also won just two of the eight duels he contested as he was easily bullied off the ball, and his performance was yet another poor one in a Rangers shirt.

He was subbed off in the 76th minute to be replaced by Kemar Roofe – and the Jamaican could be the ideal replacement for him against Hibs today.

Kemar Roofe could terrorise Hibs

The 31-year-old is entering into the final few months of his £26k-per-week contract, and judging by how prone he is to injury, it is unlikely he will be offered an extension on his deal.

He has missed 96 games during his four seasons as a player for the Light Blues, yet when he is fit and ready to perform, Roofe is arguably one of the finest forwards at the club.

Kemar Roofe

A return of 38 goals in 96 games is not bad at all considering his issues, and he could still have a big part to play between now and May.

Previously hailed as “important” by former manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, Roofe has scored twice this season, and his last goal against Real Betis allowed the Light Blues to seal a famous 3-2 victory in Spain, sending them through to the last 16 of the Europa League as group winners.

However, he has not started a Premiership match since a 2-0 win over St Johnstone in September, and it could be a massive gamble for Clement to unleash him into the fray later today.

It could be a wise one, especially if he can get into the game, as a fit Roofe is a very good player to have available and he can cause more problems than Dessers, that’s for sure.

With Danilo still recovering from injury and Fabio Silva being deployed on the left wing due to players being absent, Roofe is the only realistic choice to replace Dessers in the starting XI.

In five previous matches against Hibs, the 31-year-old has scored twice and grabbed two assists, indicating that he could be the perfect choice to start up front for the Gers this evening.

The biggest loser from Liverpool’s recent academy success

Liverpool have had quite a whirlwind couple of weeks of late. From winning the Carabao Cup to scoring a last-minute winner against Nottingham Forest, now feels like a good time to be a Reds fan.

Alongside their last six games resulting in victories, due to the injury crisis that the club have found themselves in, they have had to rely on their academy much more often than they would've liked to have done.

However, due to Jurgen Klopp's reliance on Liverpool's youngsters, it has sprung some of their careers into gear.

For example, Conor Bradley is the name which would come to the forefront of fans' minds when thinking about which youngsters have made the most progress.

The right-back has filled in for Trent Alexander-Arnold on multiple occasions and has even outshone him here and there.

The Northern Ireland international has played a total of 14 games in all competitions thus far and has managed six goal contributions during that time.

Although for the academy graduates, their inclusion within Liverpool's first-team is undeniably good for their development, it has meant some of the Reds' first-team players have drawn the short straw.

Liverpool's biggest loser from academy success

The most notable of those is that of Cody Gakpo. The attacker hasn't been in the best of form of late and looks to have lost some of the confidence he showed last season amidst an upturn in performance level from the younger stars of tomorrow around him.

That was particularly the case in the Reds' most recent Premier League tie against relegation battlers, Nottingham Forest.

Despite starting the game on Saturday and playing a total of 84 minutes, the attacker failed to have much of an impact on the tie.

During his time on the pitch, the Dutchman, who played as a striker, failed to register a shot on target. Additionally, he only amassed a total of 32 touches and ended up with a pass accuracy of just 81%.

Liverpool's Cody Gakpo.

Having such a minimal number of touches during the clash meant that the former PSV man had fewer than Caoimhin Kelleher, which, for someone who is supposed to be one of the Reds' best attackers, is quite concerning.

Unfortunately, across the rest of the season, despite scoring 11 goals, it feels as if the 24-year-old has lost his spark in recent games, failing to net in the Carabao Cup final and then frustrating at the City Ground.

Compared to the previous term of 2022/23, where the attacker joined the Merseyside club in January, the difference in output is staggering.

Gakpo played a total of 12 games less (so far) and still managed to end up with ten goal contributions with one even ending up inside the top 10 of Liverpool's best goals of the campaign.

Although this season has seen a downturn in the form of the 24-year-old, for Jayden Danns, his career has just begun.

The sudden rise of Jayden Danns

Prior to being involved in Liverpool's senior squad for the first time against Luton in what was a 4-1 win for the Reds, the striker had been lighting up the youth leagues for the club.

Jayden Danns scores for Liverpool.

In just 17 games, the attacker managed to involve himself with 20 goals, 16 of which came as his own.

Standing at a height of 6-foot, the striker is a physical presence on the field and offers Klopp yet another tactical option should he feel the need to change it up during a game.

His clinical scoring ability (as shown by his goal tally) is also a major advantage to his game. Additionally, the fact that the 18-year-old managed to slot two goals past Southampton in the FA Cup isn't something that should be frowned upon.

The attacker is one of the best stories to come out of the Liverpool camp this term and looks set to have a bright future ahead of him if his form continues.

Emotional Taylor channels mentor Crowe after becoming top run-scorer

Ross Taylor was overcome by emotion after becoming New Zealand’s highest Test run-scorer as he recalled a conversation at the start of his career with mentor Martin Crowe.Taylor moved to the top of the New Zealand list, overtaking Stephen Fleming’s tally of 7172, when he lofted Nathan Lyon down the ground on the fourth day of the SCG Test.He fell in the next over, bowled by Pat Cummins for 22, but when reflecting on the achievement after the match he couldn’t hold back the tears as his mind turned to what Crowe, who died in 2016, had told him before his first Test in 2007. “My goal was to play one Test match. I guess it’s an emotional time because my mentor Martin Crowe – that was one of the goals he put down for me was to be New Zealand’s highest Test run-scorer,” Taylor said after taking time to compose himself. “To be honest I didn’t believe him, but I’d have loved for him to be here and help celebrate.”Taylor has often referenced Crowe during his career, notably when he when he scored his 18th Test hundred – passing Crowe’s tally – against Bangladesh last March. He admitted he did not believe he had it in him to become a successful Test player early in his career, having made his ODI and T20I debuts in 2006 before a first Test appearance, against South Africa at Johannesburg, in 2007.”When I first played for New Zealand I’d had a pretty decent one-day career and only scored three or four first-class hundreds. And T20 was just coming through,” he said. “I always thought I was good enough to play one-day cricket but Test cricket was something I was never quite sure if I was good enough. That’s why I’d seek Martin’s help to become a better player than the raw, gay-abandon player that I was as a youngster.”Taylor was pleased to complete the run-scoring milestone before his 100th Test, which is set to be the first match against India at Wellington in February.Ross Taylor looks skywards after going past Martin Crowe’s tally of Test hundreds•Getty Images

“I go back to my 200th [ODI] game. I didn’t really enjoy it that much…needing one or two runs that might have been a twitchy game in the 100th. I just want to go out there and enjoy it and India are a fantastic country to play against. And the Basin Reserve, if the body holds up, will be a special moment for my family and friends.”As he did when becoming New Zealand’s highest ODI run-scorer last year, Taylor said he had no thoughts of retirement but did not expect his record to last with Kane Williamson set to hunt down whatever figure Taylor is above to leave.”Records are meant to be broken and Flem [Fleming] set a very high standard, and for me, I’m trying to get as many runs before I do retire to give Kane something to chase. He’s got a fantastic record and will go down as one of our greatest cricketers but we need him to have something to strive for. Hopefully, in however many years, there’s a youngster who can chase whatever, nine, ten, eleven thousand runs that Kane gets to.”I don’t want to hang on to just play cricket, I still want to feel I earn the right in this side and am still good enough to play. I didn’t score as many runs as I’d like [against Australia], but it wasn’t that long ago that I did score some runs. I’ve still got a lot of cricket to come in the home summer and hopefully, I can contribute to a lot more wins.”In terms of marking the milestone, Taylor was given a special bottle of wine which he will open in due course. “I’ve got a lovely bottle of Penfolds in the changing room before I’m sure in time I will open up.”And he’ll no doubt be raising a glass to his mentor.

777 Partners want an exciting manager to replace Sean Dyche at Everton

As the bad news continues to come the way of Everton fans, with a fresh two-point deduction handed to Sean Dyche's side, the potential arrival of 777 Partners may reportedly shake things up even further.

777 Partners's first Everton move

It looked for a long time as if 777 Partners's takeover of Everton was never going to happen, but recent reports have finally indicated that it is close to Premier League approval. Now just two points clear of the relegation zone following their latest reduction, the Toffees could do with some good news too, especially if they plummet even further.

If they do suffer relegation, meanwhile, then Everton's summer transfer window could be full of negatives, with the likes of Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana already linked with big-money moves away in the coming months. In a summer of potential change, 777 Partners are reportedly planning to shake things up no matter what, in a move that could prove to become a regretful decision.

Amadou Onana for Everton

According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, 777 Partners are planning to sack Dyche if their takeover goes through in what would be a ruthless decision. The report then adds that 'they want a new manager who can get fans excited about the team' instead of Dyche who is dubbed a “firefighter” style of a manager.

This arguably comes as a shock given that Dyche would have the Toffees in mid-table if it wasn't for consequences created courtesy of action away from the pitch.

Report: Everton could now get third points deduction after new £6.5m update

Things are going from bad to worse at Goodison.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 9, 2024

A solid choice who knows how to keep a club up and a lot more than what he is often credited with, especially at Burnley, 777 may well be causing quite the stir if they decided to show Dyche the door this summer. Nonetheless, reports suggest that's the plan in a summer potentially full of changes at Goodison Park – some more popular than others.

Everton should keep Dyche this summer

Just ask David Wagner and Huddersfield Town or, in a more recent case, Vincent Kompany and Burnley, exciting, neat and tidy football doesn't guarantee safety in the Premier League. Dyche's system in its majority has over the years, however, meaning that Everton could be taking an incredible risk by sacking the Englishman.

The worst start to 777's tenure would be Premier League relegation next season, especially after a campaign full of adversities this time around, meaning that they should do everything to avoid losing their safe option in Dyche.

To sum up Dyche's managerial prowess, Pep Guardiola was full of praise for the Everton boss when he reached 300 games in the dugout earlier this season. The Manchester City boss previously said:

"Congratulations, it's a good milestone. We face each other many times, Burnley especially, and now his period at Goodison Park. When you achieve these numbers it's because you have been so consistent.

"I have huge respect for Sean and all he has done. The way he plays they believe in the players he has. My record against his sides in the past are irrelevant. I said when the results weren't good that our level was more than decent. We were playing good. It's quite similar all season."
