Arsenal May Reignite Interest In "Dangerous" £37k-p/w Star

Arsenal may choose to reignite their interest in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba this summer on one major condition, a new report has now revealed.

What's the latest Arsenal transfer news?

Prior to his side's 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest at the weekend, Mikel Arteta was not planning to make any more signings this summer, but the manager may now be forced to re-enter the market for a new defender.

Sporting director Edu is open to signing Joao Cancelo, although that may be a difficult deal to orchestrate, as the Manchester City full-back has already agreed personal terms with Barcelona, and the Citizens may not be willing to negotiate with a rival.

Leicester City's Timothy Castagne and Southampton's Kyle Walker-Peters are also named as potential options, although The Athletic's James McNicholas has suggested Arteta may be better off giving one of his current right-back's a chance, saying:

“At right-back, we’ve got [Takehiro] Tomiyasu, we’ve got Ben White.

“Beyond that, we do still have Cedric Soares and we’ve got Reuell Walters in the squad. No talk about a loan move for him so he could be an emergency candidate if required. Very highly-rated, lots of ability, could this be the opening that gives him a chance to impress potentially in the cup competitions?”

Not only will Arteta have to start thinking about how to replace Timber, but the manager may also be tasked with bringing in a new centre-back, with The Daily Express reporting that Gabriel Magalhaes is being lined up for a big-money move to Saudi Arabia.

Arsenal have no plans to sell the centre-back, despite him being left out of the squad that took out on Forest, but if he does move on, then Arteta has a couple of targets in mind.

Tapsoba and Marc Guehi are likely to feature near the top of any defensive shortlist, should Gabriel leave in the next two weeks, with the former being named as a target for the Gunners way back in May.

How good is Edmond Tapsoba?

The 24-year-old has been a key player for Leverkusen over the past few seasons, with some of his best performances coming in the 2020-21 campaign, averaging a Sofascore match rating of 7.17 in the Bundesliga, the second-highest in the squad.

It is fair to say the Burkina Faso international did not let his new club down after joining from Vitoria Guimaraes, with former Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller praising him for his "really big potential" and calling him "dangerous in front of goal" upon his arrival.

edmond-tapsoba-transfer-gossip-bayer-leverkusen-tottenham-hotspur-dimitar-berbatov-postecoglou

The £37k-per-week centre-back is always looking to drive the ball forward, ranking in the 95th percentile for progressive carries, and the 93rd for successful take-ons compared to his positional peers, but the hope will be that he is not a necessary signing.

Arsenal will not want Gabriel to leave this summer, considering he was a key member of the team last season, appearing in every single Premier League game, however Tapsoba could be a good replacement if the Brazilian is tempted by a move to Saudi Arabia.

Crystal Palace In Loan Talks For "Direct" £7k-p/w Player

Crystal Palace are in negotiations regarding a loan deal to sign Chelsea ace Lewis Hall, according to reliable reports.

Who is Lewis Hall?

Hall is naturally a left-back and academy graduate at Stamford Bridge having worked his way up through the various youth ranks to get promoted to the first team this summer having impressed during pre-season, but prior to that, he’s only ever made 12 senior appearances for his boyhood club in the Premier League.

The England youth international was statistically his side’s second best defensive performing player last season – albeit on limited game time – and it’s therefore been reported that the Blues are keen to reward him with a new contract, despite still having another three years to run on his existing one.

However, it’s important that the 18-year-old receives the sufficient game time he needs in order to take the next step in his career which will mean temporarily hitting the road should he want to be a regular starter elsewhere, and it would seem that he could be on his way to join Roy Hodgson at Selhurst Park.

Are Crystal Palace signing Lewis Hall?

According to Sky Sports' Transfer Centre, Crystal Palace are "in talks" with Chelsea regarding a loan deal for Hall this summer.

Pochettino does view the defender as a player in his "long-term plans" and "wants him to get regular football" during the upcoming season, therefore meaning that any kind of move would not include an option or obligation to buy as he would be returning to his parent club upon the conclusion of his spell in SE25.

The Eagles would be able to offer him the minutes he requires, so this is definitely one to keep a close eye on for developments in the coming days.

Chelsea defender Lewis Hall.

How good is Lewis Hall?

First of all, Crystal Palace have Tyrick Mitchell as their only option at left-back so it’s vital that Hodgson not only enters the market to find a back-up in that position but also to sign someone who can seriously push the former for his starting place. Having been lauded a “direct” player with great balance and ability on the ball by journalist Josh Bunting, Hall could be the perfect candidate to put pen to paper.

The Slough-born talent last season averaged 2.6 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per top-flight game, via WhoScored, so he’s strong in the natural defensive aspect of his play, but he’s even more of a threat when bursting down the flank to the final third.

Since the start of his career, Chelsea’s £7k-per-week earner has posted 32 goal contributions (19 assists and 13 goals) in 86 appearances which shows that he loves to use his pace to drive forward, whip tempting balls into the box and create as many chances for himself and his fellow teammates as possible.

Finally, Hall shares the same agent, Wasserman, as Jordan Ayew, so this existing connection that his representative already has to the club could potentially give them a small advantage should the hierarchy continue to pursue a deal in the final weeks of the window.

Sodhi, Seifert steer Northern Districts to first win

A century from opener Brad Wilson and fifties from Shawn Hicks and Anaru Kitchen were in vain as Otago suffered a 25-run defeat against Northern Districts in their pursuit of 344. The key performer for Northern Districts, in their first win of the tournament this season, was legspinner Ish Sodhi, who finished with nine wickets in the match, including a five-for in the second innings.Otago had resumed on the fourth morning at 15 for 0, and two early strikes by Sodhi reduced them to 47 for 3. A 142-run fourth-wicket partnership between Wilson and Hicks revived Otago but Sodhi and Anton Devcich quashed any chances Otago may have had with a series of quick wickets. The batting side went from 189 for 3 to 205 for 7, with Devcich claiming the big wickets of Hicks and Wilson, who had compiled 111 off 228 balls. The remaining 139 runs were too much for Otago’s tail-enders, despite a 62-run partnership between Kitchen (69 not out off 91 balls) and Nathan Smith.Earlier in the match, Sodhi’s 4 for 75 had complemented fast bowler Brent Arnel’s 5 for 76, as Northern Districts dismissed Otago for 248 to take a 208-run first-innings lead. Otago batsmen got starts, with Hamish Rutherford (67) and Derek de Boorder (55) going on to make fifties, but Northern Districts kept the pressure by not allowing partnerships to flourish. The 208-run lead meant that Northern Districts held an edge in the match, despite a second-innings batting collapse that saw them declare their innings at 135 for 9. Only three batsmen made a score in excess of 20, while the nine wickets were picked up by fast bowler Jacob Duffy (5-49) and left-arm wristspinner Michael Rippon (4-30).Northern Districts’ first-innings batting display was far more dominant, despite a middle-order stutter. Their score of 456 was underpinned by wicketkeeper Tim Seifert’s third first-class hundred – an unbeaten 167 that lifted the side from 198 for 5. Seifert had support from Daryl Mitchell (60) and shared a seventh-wicket stand of 116 with Ish Sodhi (48), before he took the lead in a tenth-wicket stand of 57 that took the side past 450.

Wolves: O’Neil Could Sign Mouintho 2.0 In "Top-Class" £9m Signing

Wolverhampton Wanderers could finally make their efforts in the summer transfer window count, as the club eye a market move in what would be Gary O’Neil’s first signing.

The Englishman has got off to a less desired, but somewhat expected start to life at Molineux, still waiting to get his first point on the board after two games played in the 2023/24 Premier League season.

The Old Gold’s prognosis was negative before the campaign got underway, after suffering a trialling summer due to increased pressures of Financial Fair Play (FFP), leading to the departure of former manager Julen Lopetegui just five days before the opening fixture.

Things could be on the up at Wolves under O’Neil, with reference to a potential signing that the club could finally make after a testing time financially.

Who could Wolves sign this summer?

From failed bids for midfielder Alex Scott, who eventually captured by Bournemouth, to directionless interest for players that were way beyond the club’s financial reach, Wolves have been put to the test this summer.

However, there could be a light at the end of the tunnel for O’Neil, with a new update linking Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill to Molineux.

As reported by TEAMtalk, Wolves have made an approach to sign Brownhill from the newly promoted side, who was purchased at Turf Moor in 2020 from Bristol City for a fee of £9m.

The speculation has been reinforced by transfer insider Dean Jones, who spoke exclusively to GIVEMESPORT about the “interesting” prospect of the 27-year-old joining Wolves.

“Wolves’ interest in Brownhill is interesting, and while I have seen some fans suggesting that he would likely just be a backup option, I don’t get the feeling that is so much the plan.

This is a player O’Neil knows well from his playing days, and further than that, he looked into signing him when he was Bournemouth manager.

When a new manager comes in, he wants to make his mark on the squad, and one way to do that is to add players with a certain character that reflects what you are looking for in the overall squad.

So, I think it’s an interesting link and makes sense as we see this latest version of Wolves' first-team squad emerge.”

What is Josh Brownhill’s playing style?

Described by former Wolves striker Steve Bull as a “top-class” talent back in 2021, Brownhill could solve a lot of questions regarding the club’s midfield.

Deployed as a central midfielder, the Englishman is versatile in his positioning in the heart of the squad, with the ability to play in both defensive and offensive roles in the middle.

Last term in the Championship, the Warrington-born machine registered 15 goal contributions, scoring seven and assisting eight in 41 appearances for the Clarets, highlighting his strengths in the final third.

For Wolves, his introduction could come at the perfect time, following the club’s farewell to midfield duo Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho, who had graced the field of Molineux through the highs of the Nuno Espirito Santo era.

At 36-years-old, Moutinho had built up a stellar reputation in the Midlands, seeing him dubbed “wonderful” by journalist Liam Keen for his passing ability, an area that will be missed in his absence.

In signing Brownhill, O’Neil could bring a sense of the Portuguese veteran back to Wolverhampton, with the player possessing a very similar skill set to the classy midfielder.

Renowned for his strengths in playing the pivot in the engine room with a balance between defensive and offensive duties, Moutinho averaged 2.58 tackles and 6.67 progressive passes per 90 for Wolves last term, as well as averaging 1.82 key passes per 90 to showcase his edge in the final third, via FBref.

Such numbers were followed closely by the averages recorded by the Burnley whiz during the club’s journey to the top-flight, with him averaging 2.29 tackles, 4.78 progressive passes and an impressive 1.81 key passes per 90 in the Championship.

With 79 Premier League appearances already under his belt in his career, O’Neil could equip his side with his own version of Moutinho by signing Brownhill, who could be the missing piece to rebuilding the squad tarnished by heavyweight exits over the summer.

Taylor's record-equalling ton puts NZ in sight of 2-0

New Zealand’s stranglehold on the Hamilton Test grew tighter as they piled on the runs to set West Indies 444 to chase, and claimed two wickets before stumps to begin the victory push

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando10-Dec-20171:32

‘Hasn’t sunk in yet’ – Taylor

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details New Zealand’s stranglehold on the Hamilton Test grew tighter on day three, as they piled on the runs to set West Indies 444 to chase, and claimed two wickets before stumps to begin the victory push.Ross Taylor’s 107 not out was instrumental to strengthening New Zealand’s position – the hundred taking him equal with Kane Williamson and Martin Crowe, who hold the New Zealand record, with 17 Test centuries. Williamson himself struck a lively fifty to steady the innings after West Indies had struck early blows, and Trent Boult was impressive again with the ball, taking wickets off successive deliveries in the morning, before making the first incision of the fourth innings as the day waned.Getty ImagesIt was not as if West Indies were substantially outperformed on the day – just that they had ceded so much ground already that they required a near-miraculous effort to reimpose themselves on the match. Their quicks were good in patches – Miguel Cummins and Shannon Gabriel running hot at various points through the day. In one especially hostile spell, Cummins bowled Williamson with a searing yorker from outside the off stump, had Henry Nicholls nicking off to a well-directed short ball, and would also have had the wicket of Mitchell Santner had wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich managed to hold a difficult overhead chance off Santner’s top edge.Gabriel, meanwhile, prospered with fast length balls aimed at the stumps. He claimed two wickets, one of which was an lbw of Colin de Grandhomme – a decision that was overturned in New Zealand’s favour only after a confused third-umpire’s review.Taylor’s, meanwhile, was an innings of moderation. Sixty balls he took to hit his first boundary, having kept out some excellent deliveries from Cummins and Gabriel in that time. At no stage during his knock was he hurried; he was content usually to push the ball into gaps, keeping that brutal cut and those bludgeoned drives in check. Of his first fifty runs, 38 came from singles and twos. The only bowler who troubled him consistently was Gabriel, who beat him for pace repeatedly, and had even drawn and outside edge when Taylor was on 35, only for the gully fielder to grass the low chance. After tea, Taylor’s pace quickened – the singles coming more frequently than before, and Cummins even suffering two disdainful pulls for four in front of square. Having got out on 93 at the Basin Reserve, Taylor didn’t dally long in the nineties, taking only nine deliveries to move to triple figures. In addition to having equaled the New Zealand record, this is a special ton for Taylor: his longtime friend and mentor Martin Crowe had said Taylor would reach and surpass his own tally of 17 centuries.Earlier, West Indies had had a brief opportunity to spark a New Zealand collapse, when they dismissed the openers with 42 on the board, but Williamson’s energetic innings sucked the worst of the venom out of their bowling. Having arrived at 11 for 1, Williamson began to leave the ball judiciously, and defend with assurance. He batted out 26 balls before the expansive strokes began to appear. His two first boundaries were made possible by fielding errors at point and deep square leg, but then the 33 balls he faced before lunch yielded 42 runs. His fifty was brought up via a leg glance to the fine leg boundary immediately after he had socked Shannon Gabriel past mid-off. It was an important score for Williamson, for he had gone five international innings without a fifty – a significant stretch for such a consistent batsman.Elsewhere in the New Zealand innings, batsmen got starts and were undone when more substantial scores beckoned. Tom Latham, Mitchell Santner and Colin de Grandhomme all made it past 20 before being dismissed, generally by very good West Indies bowling. None of the dismissals seemed to dent New Zealand much, so secure were they already in the game. When Williamson declared, New Zealand had made 291 for 8 in the second dig.As had been the case at the Basin Reserve, West Indies’ first-innings indiscretions meant that they began the second innings with only a miniscule chance of avoiding defeat. That chance would become worse before stumps. Kieran Powell was out for his second duck of the match – squared up by a short delivery from Boult that took his edge and flew low to third slip. Shimron Hetmyer sparkled briefly again, playing a dismissive pull and a searing on-drive for four, but he was out cheaply again, just lofting a full Tim Southee delivery into the hands of mid-off.West Indies must take heart from their successful pursuit of 322 at Headingley earlier this year. The target in front of them now, however, will take even more grit and resilience – the likes of which they are yet to show for an extended period, on this tour.

Djibril Cisse Furious As Liverpool U16 Player Racially Abused

Liverpool have confirmed that a youth player was racially abused in an Under-16 game against Juventus, leading the team to walk off the pitch.

Why did the Liverpool U16 team walk off the pitch?

Playing in the Next Generation Trophy last Friday – a tournament held in Austria – the Reds were up against their Italian counterparts when the incident took place.

As per The Athletic, the Liverpool teenager involved went to the touchline to report the abuse to the coaching staff, who informed the players to follow protocol and leave the field.

The Juventus youngster involved was then suspended by his club for the rest of the tournament while staff offered the English side a full apology.

A Liverpool spokesperson said: “We can confirm that a member of our under-16s team was racially abused by an opponent while playing in the Next Generation youth tournament in Austria.

“The individual responsible was identified immediately and removed from the competition as a result of the swift intervention of our own players and staff, tournament organisers and opposition management, who have also taken additional disciplinary measures inclusive of education.

“We would like to place on record our appreciation for the prompt actions taken by all involved. This applies most of all to the player subjected to the attack, who showed remarkable maturity in following established protocols, including leaving the pitch, in order to report the matter as soon as it occurred. He is receiving the full support of the club.

“We would also reiterate that our condemnation of all forms of racist abuse remains unequivocal and absolute.”

What has been the reaction to the racist incident in the Liverpool U16 game vs Juventus?

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, before the statement had been officially given by Liverpool's spokesperson, former player Djibril Cisse took to social media to express his dismay and anger about what had happened.

The ex-French footballer has a son, Prince, who currently plays in the Reds' academy and was involved in the game.

Writing to his two million Instagram followers, Cisse said (via TalkSport): “Now it’s too much.

“During the game @LiverpoolFC vs @Juventus under 16s (my son Prince Cisse was playing) a kid from Juventus called a @LiverpoolFC a n****.

“The @LiverpoolFC staff had to stop the game. @Juventus what are you gonna do now? It’s a f****** shame. 15 years old kid @Juventus, you better act strongly now and shame.”

As per The Athletic, direct action has already been taken. Indeed, they report that staff members from Juventus’ academy and tournament organisers Red Bull Salzburg have since contacted Liverpool academy director Alex Inglethorpe to express their regret about the incident and check on the youngster’s well-being.

While it's also mentioned that the Juventus youth player is now undergoing a course to educate him that racism and all forms of discrimination are unacceptable. It is understood that senior Liverpool figures are happy with how Juventus have handled the matter.

All in all, it's a shameful incident and thoroughly disappointing to learn of such attitudes and behaviour existing within the academy of Europe's biggest football clubs.

In response to the incident, however, in a show of solidarity ahead of their following game at the Next Generation Trophy, Liverpool and their Argentinian opposition Independiente took the knee before kick-off.

Man City: Journalist Reveals Positive Update in Pursuit Of "Great Player"

Manchester City's pursuit of Lucas Paqueta has taken a positive turn, according to reports, as the Premier League champions look to complete their squad ahead of the start of the new campaign.

Pep Guardiola has already welcomed two reinforcements this summer, with Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol coming through the door at The Etihad.

What's the latest on Lucas Paqueta to Manchester City?

Whilst Manchester City are yet to see an offer accepted by West Ham United for Paqueta, as confirmed by David Moyes, they have, at the very least, agreed personal terms with the Brazilian, according to Mohamed Bouhafsi.

Bouhafsi has reported that the midfielder has agreed a six-year deal with the treble winners, who saw an £85m, plus £10m in add-ons rejected by West Ham. The Hammers reportedly want £110m without bonuses if they are to sell their star this summer, but City chiefs are confident they'll find a deal.

Moyes confirmed that the offer that the London club received did not reach their valuation, saying, via Roshane Thomas: "We've had an offer from Manchester City, but at the moment it's not anywhere near meeting our valuation."

With time running out in the transfer window, City may be keen to get the deal done as quickly as possible in the remaining weeks, especially after reportedly agreeing personal terms with Paqueta.

Should Manchester City sign Lucas Paqueta?

City's pursuit of Paqueta came somewhat out of nowhere, given his place in a side that struggled in the Premier League for the majority of last season. Guardiola's eye for talent is not one to be questioned, though, and the statistics show exactly why the Manchester club are after the midfielder.

According to FBref, when compared to Ilkay Gundogan, the West Ham man wasn't far off in what was ultimately a poor side domestically under Moyes last season.

Paqueta made just 0.48 less progressive passes per 90 than Gundogan last season, who he may be replacing at The Etihad this summer, with both making over five. Meanwhile, he was also involved in just four fewer goals, and won more tackles per 90 than the German.

So, whilst Paqueta may have been an unexpected target for some, the stats show that City could get themselves an ideal Gundogan replacement.

It is those numbers that have earned the midfielder such high praise in the past, too, including from Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who said last season, via HITC: "We respect them a lot.

“They have caused us a lot of problems here and there as well, all the time. David is just doing an incredible job, they have really quality players and options to change. Paqueta is a great player."

The fact that he's got the approval of both Guardiola and Klopp speaks volumes about the calibre of player that Paqueta is. And if Manchester City can add him to their treble-winning side, he will only get better.

Of course, there's still a long way to go in negotiations, given West Ham's reported £110m asking price, but those at The Etihad could yet land their man before the summer transfer window slams shut in the Premier League.

Jackson Bird wraps up ten-wicket win against NSW

Jackson Bird completed a seven-wicket match haul to keep his name in the minds of Australia’s selectors as Tasmania wrapped up a ten-wicket win against New South Wales

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Dec-2017
ScorecardJackson Bird completed a seven-wicket match haul to keep his name in the minds of Australia’s selectors as Tasmania wrapped up a ten-wicket win on the fourth day against New South Wales in Hobart. The Blues resumed on 2 for 50 in their follow on, but Bird did not take long to remove opener Nic Maddinson for 39 and Ed Cowan for a duck, which left the visitors at 4 for 66 with all four wickets having fallen to Bird.It was left to Peter Nevill to lead the resistance, which he did by compiling 70 as wickets fell around him, including three to the young fast bowler Tom Rogers. Nevill was the last man out, sending a return catch to the part-time medium-pacer Jordan Silk, who collected his first wicket in first-class cricket. The Blues were bowled out for 184, which left scores level and Tasmania needing a single run to win. Silk struck a boundary from the second ball of the innings to confirm the victory. It was a fine result for the Tigers, given that New South Wales were the tournament leaders and the entire first day was lost to rain.
