Norwich City: Predicted XI vs Southampton as Teemu Pukki benched [Opinion]

Norwich City need all the points they can get to avoid relegation in the restart of the Premier League as they start off at Carrow Road against Southampton.

Daniel Farke’s team currently lie rock bottom of the top flight table having accumulated just 21 points all season, six points off of potential survival with just nine games left to play.

On the other hand, the Saints sit relatively comfortably in 14th place and are seven points clear of the relegation zone.

With arguably not much to play for, the Canaries will be hoping that they can pounce on a potential lapse of concentration from the south coast side and will be fresh off the bat of beating Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur in a friendly game as part of their preparations.

Both Mario Vrancic and Josip Drmic scored in that match and may be pushing for starts ahead of the fixture, which could spell bad news for Teemu Pukki.

The 30-year old has been somewhat of a revelation in the 2019/20 season so far with 11 goals and three assists in 29 appearances in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt.

However, the Finnish international has not found the back of the net in his last seven in all competitions, meaning that Farke could look to take him out of the limelight and give Drmic a go up top following his strike in the friendly.

Vrancic also showed what he could do from set pieces by scoring a free-kick, and may replace Alex Tettey in the starting 11 from their last game against Sheffield United, in which he achieved the most tackles out of his teammates and a higher overall rating than the 34-year old despite only coming off the bench, as per Sofascore.

Grant Hanley also started that match but will be injured alongside fellow central defender Christoph Zimmermann, meaning that Timm Klose could make a dramatic return alongside Ben Godfrey given that he is physically prepared after his previous injury woes according to Farke.

Three changes may be made in total from the match against the Blades, as NCFC look to chase three precious points.

Spurs fans react as target’s agent makes transfer admission

Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho is reportedly after a defensive midfielder – or as he likes to call it, a ‘positional midfielder’ – this summer and one target’s agent has added fuel to the fire with his latest remarks.

Angers SCO midfielder Baptiste Santamaria will be allowed to leave the Ligue 1 outfit at the end of the season, according to his agent, who spoke on Radio Marte via ForzaNapoli.

He said: “In the next market we have the President’s word: we will be allowed to leave.”

The 25-year-old has received glowing reviews in the past and has even been dubbed as the next N’Golo Kante. This season for the French side, he has averaged a massive 3.3 tackles per game as well as 1.5 interceptions, 1.3 shots and 1.1 dribbles per match, via WhoScored.

Santamaria was also subject to a £10m bid from Aston Villa in the January transfer window which Angers rejected, stating that they would like €16m (£14m) instead.

Tottenham Hotspur: Dele Alli and Eric Dier face likely suspensions, prompting fan reactions

Tottenham are still waiting to find out if Dele Alli and Eric Dier will be banned for the resumption of the Premier League season after being charged by the FA prior to football’s suspension.

According to The Sun (as relayed by @Daily_Hotspur), Alli faces a potential three-match-ban for misconduct after mocking an Asian man on Snapchat. The disciplinary panel is yet to rule on his case, despite the fact that he was charged three months ago.

Meanwhile, Dier was charged with improper and threatening conduct, having jumped into the crowd to confront a fan during the team’s FA Cup defeat to Norwich City. He was hit with a charge back in April and could also face a suspension if he is found guilty of bringing the game into disrepute.

The Sun’s senior reporter Duncan Wright revealed that the panel is set to convene over a video conference due to the unprecedented circumstances. If the players are adjudged to have broken the rules, they will miss several games when football resumes later this month.

However, this may give Jose Mourinho the opportunity to try out other members of the squad instead. One fan certainly seems to think so, as he tweeted that it “will be doing us a favour” in response to the latest update on Alli and Dier. Another disagreed, incredulously commenting “seriously” when the news broke, given the fact it has taken so long.

Arsenal fans are loving what Serge Gnabry has done

Arsenal fans have been reacting in masses on social media after their former winger Serge Gnabry was spotted donning this season’s Gunners away kit during a home training session for his current club, Bayern Munich.

The 24-year-old left the Emirates Stadium in 2016 for just £5m and has since gone onto become a superstar at Bayern Munich where he is now worth £81m according to Transfermarkt’s valuation.

Gnabry struggled to make an impact in north London, contributing to just three goals in 18 first-team appearances. He also famously couldn’t even impress Tony Pulis at West Brom.

Last season, he picked up Bayern’s Player of the Season award as the Bundesliga giants clinched the title and this campaign alone, he’s managed to score 18 times whilst providing 11 assists, via Transfermarkt.

The Gunners’ faithful are clearly still hurt by Arsene Wenger’s great mistake of letting him leave the club as many are begging for him to come home. One supporter would even like to see Nicolas Pepe swapped for the German international.

Profit Players: James Milner played his part in Manchester City’s rise to Premier League superpower

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

As hard as it may seem to comprehend now, Manchester City finished only one position and three points ahead of Aston Villa in the Premier League 10 years ago. The Abu Dhabi United group had been in at the Etihad Stadium for two seasons but Champions League football remained elusive. In order to try and break through that glass ceiling, City’s hierarchy agreed a player swap with Aston Villa which also saw the Mancunian club part with £26m. While James Milner came north, Stephen Ireland moved in the other direction.

Milner made an instant impact on his debut, setting up Manchester City’s first goal for Gareth Barry in a 3-0 win over Liverpool – ironically, the scorer was an ex-Villa player who the Reds had tried and failed to sign a couple of years’ previously. The Leeds native started 23 league games under Roberto Mancini in his first season at the Etihad and helped them to clinch a Champions League place, along with winning the FA Cup.

Milner and the club had an even better campaign in 2011/12, with the Englishman netting three goals in City’s last-gasp Premier League triumph, chipping in with two assists in a 6-1 win at Manchester United along the way. His tally of league goals was one higher the following season but the title winged its way to the other side of Manchester in what proved to be a one-horse race.

Mancini made way for Manuel Pellegrini at the Etihad in 2013, with the Chilean often using Milner as Plan B – 19 of the midfielder’s 31 Premier League appearances in 2013/14 came as a substitute, yet he still ended the season with a goal and seven assists as City pipped Liverpool to the title, with a League Cup medal also making its way into Milner’s pocket that year.

His most fruitful campaign for the Cityzens also turned out to be his last one, with five goals and eight assists in 2014/15 as Pellegrini’s side gave second best to Chelsea. He was not offered a new contract at the end of that season and, after five years in Manchester, he made the short journey to Liverpool on a free transfer, where he continues to be a much-valued member of Jurgen Klopp’s title-winning squad.

Milner ended his time at Manchester City with 19 goals and 45 assists in 203 appearances, winning five trophies at the club, including that historic Premier League triumph in 2012, the first of four that City would enjoy in a glittering decade. A commendable team player, he lined up in no fewer than nine different positions during his time at the Etihad, most commonly across the midfield line but also playing in role as diverse as right-back and centre-forward (as per TransferMarkt).

The 61-cap England international has since gone on to win another four trophies at Liverpool, including the Champions League and a third Premier League title, although he only had a watching brief from the substitutes’ bench as his former club beat his current side 4-0 at the Etihad on Thursday.

While Milner went on to have a trophy-laden decade and play his part in Manchester City’s rise to Premier League stardom, Ireland’s career faded out at Aston Villa and Stoke. On reflection, £26m was a small sum to pay for an exchange which worked out greatly in the Cityzens’ favour.

Man City fans, did you think Milner was perhaps underappreciated in his time at the Etihad? Comment below with your views!

Remembering Darren Bent’s strike against Liverpool: The PL’s weirdest goal

It’s a goal you can’t forget.

Darren Bent scored for Sunderland against Liverpool in 2009, sending a drive in off a beach ball that had been brought to the ground by supporter Colin Campbell.

He smacked it onto the pitch and it remained in Pepe Reina’s area, primarily in the goal itself, until it made an incredible, decisive impact.

Nobody is going to forget Bent’s strike, which hit the bottom corner, giving the Black Cats a vital win.

As Liverpool struggled to gain a foothold on the match in the absence of Xabi Alonso (sold), Steven Gerrard (injured), Fernando Torres (injured) and Javier Mascherano (benched) – the four players most pivotal to their runner-up finish the season prior – few probably noticed as the ball started to creep back out of the net and into Pepe Reina’s six-yard box.

Just five minutes into play, though, the beach ball was the centre of everybody’s attention – and the new centre of Campbell’s universe. Darren Bent, enjoying the form of his career after a move to the Stadium of Light, scuffed his connection with a Steed Malbranque cross. But as Reina leaned down in preparation for a save, Bent’s effort bounced off the beach ball, spinning it into the opposite direction and leaving the Liverpool goalkeeper in a painful combination of helplessness and confusion.

That was the only goal in a disappointing performance at the Stadium of Light, which actually saw Sunderland leapfrog Liverpool in the Premier League table, and the backlash against Campbell was huge. He recounts death threats from all over the world; some told him to leave town, others advised him to buy a coffin and one particular troller declared he’d turn him into a curry.

“I’m the one who did it. I’m the one caught on camera. I’m so, so sorry. This is my worst, worst nightmare. When I got home I went into the garden and threw up. I was physically sick – and that’s before the death threats started appearing on the internet the next day.

“When I looked closer these people were from America and Australia and all over the world – so-called fans who never come to Liverpool. So after that, I just ignored them. I knew the true fans wouldn’t threaten me like that – they would know I was more cut up about what happened than anyone else.”

But in truth, the last person at fault for the goal or the result was a Liverpool-loving teenager who’d flailed an arm at a crowd-pleasing prop that was brought to Wearside. For starters, as several leading former referees immediately protested, the goal should never have stood. The official rule is that play must stop if the ball makes contact with a foreign object and restart with a drop ball. Referee Mike Jones should have known that, and he was demoted to the Championship the following weekend.

Arguably more significantly, though, the goal glossed over a poor performance from Liverpool in a match they had little right to win. Bent also hit the post and the bar while team-mates saw efforts cleared off the line as Benitez’s attempt to curtail the early form Sunderland had shown that season by lining up Liverpool in a 5-4-1 backfired spectacularly. Bad results against theoretically lesser teams were a recurring theme throughout Liverpool’s 2009/10, which ended with them finishing in seventh place and Benitez receiving his marching orders.

The beach ball, for all its mischief, was a minute part in that. It was as if the footballing gods decided fate would deal Liverpool a cruel blow at the Stadium of Light, and accordingly prevent them recovering.

As much shame as Campbell felt at the time, as the internet produced a typically malicious backlash, he should be proud for providing the Premier League with one of its most bizarre and unforgettable moments that, in its own strange way, captured the idiosyncrasies which make English football so uniquely special.
