Sunderland: Former Newcastle United player Joey Barton apologetic over potential L1 decision

Former Newcastle United midfielder Joey Barton has revealed that he feels sorry for Sunderland ahead of what could be a points-per-game finish to the League One season.

With the Premier League and Championship gradually returning to training ahead of potential restarts to the 2019/2020 season, League One clubs are eagerly anticipating a decision to be made over their future.

Sunderland, who sit seventh in the league standings are on course to miss out on a play-off place if the current campaign is cancelled and ended on a points-per-game system.

Despite sitting three points off second place, the Black Cats would drop down to eighth position of the PPG system is used.

However, despite claims on how the season should be completed, it is also reported that League One clubs are at odds over how to finish.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Football Show, Barton said: “I’d prefer to finish the campaign, we’ve been quite vocal about that from the start. We believe we could have got [one of] the [automatic promotion places], I think we’d had one defeat in 17, unbeaten in 12 and been away to every side who had a chance of winning the league.

“We had to play nine games, six of those were in the bottom 10, three of those six were in the bottom three, you’d argue Bolton and Southend were already down and probably only Tranmere fighting for survival there – so we felt like we had a shot at the automatics, we were two points behind Rotherham with them to play at home.

“We’re disappointed in this but we will get a chance with a play-off situation and I do feel sorry for Sunderland – I never thought I’d say that – but I do feel sorry for them.”

Barton is the current manager of Fleetwood, see his side sit 5th place in the league standings as thing stand, just seven points off league leaders Coventry City.

A potential PPG system would see Barton’s side drop to 6th but hold on to a play-off spot, ahead of Peterborough.

Phil Hay’s update has Leeds fans talking

Leeds United fans have been fretting on Twitter this week after Phil Hay relayed news about non-league football voiding the season for many of its divisions.

The Football Association has declared that all leagues below the sixth tier of English football are “null and void” while talks are ongoing with the three National League divisions, which hold plenty of full-time teams.

While the EFL and the Premier League have suspended their seasons until the end of April with the intention to try and complete the current campaign, but if that’ll actually be able to happen remains to be seen, for the time being.

Here’s how fans have been reacting to the latest update…

Some were worried by the news and how it might affect the Championship’s end result, which was summed up by two fans’ comments of them being “nervous” and another who was “bricking it.”

Others pondered if it had now set a “dangerous precedent” as it may cause other leagues to follow suit – many at Elland Road would understandably be fuming if their season is declared void.

Missing football!? There’s still plenty of Leeds discussion going on in the Vital Leeds Forum! Click here to get involved!

They have waited 16 years for top-flight football, and are on the verge of ending that with only nine games remaining, the west Yorkshiremen are sat top of the table with a seven-point cushion to the playoff positions.

A couple of further members of the Whites faithful believed the season should resume whenever it’s safe to do so, hardly a surprise given what is at stake for the league leaders.

Spurs fans discuss links to Celtic star Odsonne Edouard

After both Harry Kane and Heung-min Son’s injuries, Tottenham were left desperately short of firepower in the weeks just before football was postponed across Europe.

It brutally exposed the north London side’s lack of depth in the number nine role, so it’s been no surprise to see the Lilywhites being linked with a move for a striker in the upcoming summer transfer window.

And according to The Sunday Times, Spurs have set their sights on Celtic star Odsonne Edouard as the man to solve that problem. The report claims that Jose Mourinho’s side have had him scouted numerous times over the course of this season, and that they see him as a potential replacement or back-up option to Kane.

After hearing about their links to the Frenchman, Spurs fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on their latest striker target.

A couple of Spurs fans suggested that Edouard could actually play alongside Kane in a strike partnership, much like what Fernando Llorente brought to the table.

With an impressive haul of 27 goals in just 45 games across all competitions, Edouard has certainly proven he’s got the ability to lead the line with aplomb.

But as one fan suggested, whether his exploits in Scottish football can be translated into the Premier League is another question altogether.

At only 22 however, he’s got the time to grow and develop into a real success at Spurs.

Man Utd fans will love Odion Ighalo’s response

It seems the lack of football action is starting to get to Manchester United’s January signing Odion Ighalo.

The Nigerian international posted on Twitter to express his boredom, and that soon transpired into becoming an ad hoc Q&A in the replies section.

Hilariously obscure Premier League players – Can you name them all?

One Twitter user asked him to reveal what he loves about his new club, and Ighalo gave a simple one-word reply: Everything.

Ighalo’s arrival at Old Trafford in January certainly raised a few eyebrows, not least because the deal took place in the final hours of the winter transfer window.

However, the 30-year-old has been an effective addition when called upon. He’s already grabbed four goals and one assist for the Red Devils, scoring twice in the Europa League and bagging a brace against Derby County in the FA Cup.

Who knows how long we’ll be waiting for the Premier League to start up again, but it seems Ighalo is eager to get back to serving the club he loves so much as soon as possible.

Manchester United: Fans reflect on Sir Alex Ferguson’s flop Nick Powell

Lots of Manchester United supporters have been remembering Red Devils flop Nick Powell, following his latest comments in an exclusive with the Manchester Evening News.

Speaking to Dominic Booth, Powell opened up about his time at Old Trafford. The 26-year-old revealed he only signed for United because of Sir Alex Ferguson, and admitted: “I remember waking up from my back operation and he’d announced his retirement. So I had no idea, woke up and then he’d retired.

“I remember saying before that I didn’t want my op, as United had pretty much won the league by then and you needed 10 appearances to get a medal – I was on two or three. I made a couple of bench appearances and I was really enjoying the time, even though I wasn’t playing. He [Ferguson] told me exactly what I was getting into and I didn’t mind that.”

Powell acknowledged “it was always going to be different when Sir Alex retired. If he wasn’t there and I didn’t have a phone call and meetings with him, I probably wouldn’t have gone to United. So it was always going to be a downhill spiral for me as soon as he left.”

After arriving at the Theatre of Dreams from Crewe Alexandra all the way back in the summer of 2012 for £6.75m, the Englishman flopped and only made 9 appearances for United in all competitions, scoring just 1 goal, before departing Manchester for Wigan Athletic on a free transfer.

While it is safe to say things didn’t quite work out during his time at the club, Powell now plies his trade at Championship side Stoke City, where he has netted 4 goals and produced 4 assists for Michael O’Neill’s Potters in the English second division (Transfermarkt).

UtdReport posted his thoughts on Twitter, prompting plenty of replies from the United faithful. One fan remarked the midfielder was “never good enough” and another simply asked “where is he now?”

Have a read through the different reactions down below…

United fans, do you think Nick Powell was Sir Alex Ferguson’s biggest failed signing? Let us know in the comments!

Alasdair Gold reveals Spurs’ advantage over Premier League rivals

Football.London journalist Alasdair Gold has revealed that Tottenham’s experience of playing at neutral venues before could give them a major advantage when the Premier League season restarts.

What did he say?

As part of the top-flight’s “Project Restart”, Premier League clubs may be expected to play their remaining fixtures of the season at eight to ten neutral venues – “that is believed to be the highest number of venues that would be granted safety certificates by the Sports Grounds Safety Authority and police”.

Now, Gold has claimed that due to Spurs’ time spent playing games at Wembley and Stadium MK whilst they waited for their own new ground to be completed, that could give Jose Mourinho’s side a surprise advantage.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “Spurs have been prepared for this sort of plan perhaps without entirely realising it. Their nomadic existence in recent seasons, playing home games in the unfamiliar surroundings of Wembley Stadium and even the Stadium MK while they waited for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to be opened will stand many of the players in good stead for the challenge ahead.

“There was so much uncertainty last season with which games would be played at their new home and which had to remain at Wembley, Mauricio Pochettino had to prepare the players to be adaptable to whatever stadium they played in. Should the season resume and Tottenham have to adapt to yet more stadiums, those neutral venues might not prove as awkward a hurdle for many of Mourinho’s players and they will need to take any advantage they can get to claw back those points on their rivals.”

Advantage

Gold certainly makes a perceptive point about how Spurs could find it easier to hit the ground running than some of their other Premier League rivals.

Add to that the likelihood of Harry Kane and Heung-min Son. amongst others, finding themselves back at full fitness and recovered from their injuries, and Spurs have a great chance of really getting the first step on those around them.

And with the north London side still firmly in the race to secure European football for next season, any little advantage would be most welcomed.

Profit Players: Signing Gareth Bale turned out to be Daniel Levy’s best decision for Tottenham Hotspur

This article forms part of our Profit Players feature series, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at how well a player has fared since being signed or sold, using statistical figures and statements from pundits to prove how good of a deal the club managed to achieve.

With the transfer window just around the corner, Real Madrid have been linked to some of the biggest names in world football as per usual, including Manchester United talisman Paul Pogba and Eduardo Camavinga, which will probably ruffle a few feathers in the Galacticos camp.

Despite recent reports, former Tottenham starlet Gareth Bale is likely to finish his career at the Santiago Bernabeu, according to his agent Jonathan Barnett. The famous stadium is a far cry away from St Mary’s Stadium, where the young Welshman first made a name for himself.

He made his professional debut for Southampton in the 2-0 win over Millwall in the Championship, becoming the second youngest player to play for the Saints in the process.

Bale scored his first goal for the club during the 2-2 draw with Derby County in the English second tier, where the young left-back quickly developed a reputation as a dead-ball-specialist.

Unsurprisingly, his performances with the South Coast side attracted the attention of a number of major European clubs, including the likes of Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.

The Lilywhites boss Daniel Levy got there first, and the Welsh youngster moved to White Hart Lane in the summer of 2007 for a fee of up to £10m (Reuters). Over 10 years later, it is fair to say signing Bale is arguably the best decision the chairman has ever made.

Even so, things got off to a rocky start, as he was still used as a full-back at the beginning of his Spurs career. He even suffered the embarrassment of going 24 games without a win.

Nevertheless, he remained defiant in the face of further setbacks, as a foot injury restricted him to just 12 appearances in the 2007/08 season, and he lost his place in the starting lineup to Benoit Assou-Ekotto.

However, this prompted Harry Redknapp to make arguably the boldest move of his career, which in turn would transform Bale into one of the best players in the world.

The manager at the time deployed the Welshman on the wing, and the move almost paid off right from the start, as he won his first league game with the Lilywhites against Burnley soon after. Redknapp’s side went on to qualify for the Champions League for the first time.

Bale would go on to write his name into the history books in his debut season in the European competition. He struck a stunning hat-trick away to Inter Milan in a 4-3 defeat before producing another outstanding display in the second leg at home.

Redknapp famously told the media after the game “he’s got everything. He’s got great ability. It’s not just his pace, he can run all day, and keep running. He’s got the ability to cross, his left foot is great on the run, he can shoot, dribble, head it, he’s got everything.”

Remarkably, the Welsh international would surpass his heroics against the Italians in his gold season of 2012/13.

This was a period of time where he was practically unplayable.

Under the guidance of new manager Andre Villas-Boas, Bale reinvented himself again in an infield role behind the striker. He ended up scoring 26 goals in 44 games for the Portuguese boss in all competitions (Transfermarkt).

His performances over the years saw his valuation dramatically increase from £13m in September 2007 to a staggering £72m by the time he left north London.

Naturally, his heroics in front of the West Stand crowd would come at a heavy cost, as Real Madrid soon came calling. Florentino Perez broke the world transfer record at the time to sign the Spurs star, as Bale sealed an £85.3m move which eclipsed the £80m Madrid paid Manchester United for Cristiano Ronaldo in 2009.

In turn, the Lilywhites signed future stars like Christian Eriksen and Erik Lamela (to name but a few), as the club spent nearly £105m on seven players as a result.

With the benefit of hindsight, Bale’s arrival turned out to be the best decision Levy has ever made, as Spurs managed to get more than six years of football out of the Welshman in which time he scored 56 goals and provided 58 assists, until the board sold him for a massive profit.

Tottenham fans, do you think Gareth Bale has been Daniel Levy’s best signing so far? Let us know down below!
