Liverpool: Fans stunned by Jurgen Klopp’s contract, urge club to hand him new deal

Liverpool fans have pleaded to the club to offer manager Jurgen Klopp a new contract after details of Premier League managers’ salaries were revealed.

The Daily Mail revealed that Jose Mourinho became the second-highest-paid manager in the world behind Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, taking home a salary of £15m a year from Tottenham Hotspur.

This prompted a list of all the top manager’s salaries in European football, with the Reds’ boss earning £7m a year, comparatively far less than some of his rivals.

The Stuttgart-born coach guided the Reds to 97 points in the Premier League last season and their sixth Champions League crown after toppling Spurs 2-0 in Madrid.

Supporters were understandably stunned that he is so low down the list, and insistent about their preference to see Klopp sign a new deal. One fan said that it’s about time that he had a wage increase.

Here you will find some of the best comments from Liverpool fans:

Liverpool fans, should Klopp earn more than £7m per year? Let us know below!

Liverpool should sign Iker Muniain as back-up to Sadio Mane

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

It seems like Iker Muniain has been around for ages.

The two-time Spain international made his debut for Athletic Bilbao as a 16-year-old back in 2009, and he has been a mainstay in the team ever since. Even at the age of just 26, he has made 398 appearances for Los Leones, scoring 58 goals and providing 40 assists. It seems he is rather settled at the Basque club, with him having made the uncommon step of signing a new contract without a release clause in it. In Spain, this is something of a rarity.

[ad_pod ]

However, according to Don Balon, Jurgen Klopp would be interested in taking Muniain to Anfield next summer. Whilst the potential fee is not yet known, it is being said that Liverpool would be willing to double his €2m (£1.7m)-a-year salary.

As a left-winger, it is hard to see the Spaniard dethroning Sadio Mane in the Reds’ starting XI. Having said that, coming in as a back-up/rotation option would not go amiss. At the moment, the alternative to the Senegal international appears to be Divock Origi, but he is a striker by nature and only plugs a gap when appearing on that flank. As a specialist in that position, Muniain is exactly what Klopp needs.

He has the ability to succeed, too. This season, he has been in good form for Gaizka Garitano’s side. In 12 La Liga appearances, he has bagged four goals, which have come from an average of 1.1 shots per game. Standing at just 5 foot 7 in, he is diminutive, and that has brought along tags of “the Spanish Messi” in the past. Whilst he cannot match the standards of the great Argentinian, he is still a creative force. He has 1.5 key passes per match this campaign, as well as 1.8 dribbles. In both aspects, he leads the way amongst his teammates.

Currently valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, it is not known how much Bilbao would command for his services, or even whether Muniain would be willing to depart San Mames. Should he feel inclined to seek out a new challenge, though, Merseyside would be a good destination. As cover for Mane, he would be exactly what the former Borussia Dortmund boss requires.

Meanwhile, Liverpool fans love one popstar’s reaction to one of their best moments from last season!

Sunderland’s Will Grigg could be dropped soon if his poor form continues

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

With fans beginning to grow impatient it is important that Sunderland get back to winning ways against Gillingham in the FA Cup.

Phil Parkinson may have lost four of his first six games but he has enjoyed managing at home, in the main, and if the Black Cats can replicate the dominance they showed against Tranmere and Southend previously – with 17 and 18 shots against those teams respectively, they should progress.

Although they had a similar amount of shots in the two games, the scorelines reflected a much different story, and Parkinson’s side will have to get back to the clinical display they showed against Rovers if they are to pick up their form.

Those matches show that it is not really a question of creating chances, but finishing them. That’s where Will Grigg comes into play.

The Northern Ireland international has been a disappointment since his £4m January move with only seven goals in 41 games, and therefore he may have to start performing soon if he wants to retain his place in the side, starting on Sunday.

Coming up against Max Ehmer promises to be a tough challenge, though, considering the defender’s form this season.

As per WhoScored, he has a good command of the defensive final third, with 5.3 aerial duels won per game and 4.6 clearances.

He will attempt to make life difficult for Grigg by marking him out of the game, and since the Northern Irishman feeds off the service from his teammates, he may struggle to get scoring opportunities.

The striker’s rate of key passes and successful dribbles underline that fact he is unable to create chances for himself, and shows he hasn’t been of much use to his team in terms of general play.

That means when he isn’t scoring – which he hasn’t been – he is arguably a bit of a hindrance to the attack, and Parkinson may consider dropping him and playing Chris Maguire further forward, as he has scored five goals and made 1.7 key passes per game.

Gillingham have conceded 20 league goals this term as well, so are shaky at the back, and if Grigg can escape the grasp of Ehmer he may be able to get back on the scoresheet.

Atletico Madrid would get missing link with Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

A new report coming from ESPN stated that Atletico Madrid have joined the race to sign Manchester United’s Nemanja Matic. And looking at their squad as a whole, he just might be Diego Simeone’s missing link.

What’s the word, then?

It seems that Simeone is still not done with adding more firepower to his Atletico Madrid squad.

ESPN report that the Rojiblancos have now joined AC Milan in the race to sign Manchester United’s 31-year-old defensive midfielder, Matic, once the transfer market opens.

Watch Spanish Football Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

They also state his eligibility to play in the Champions League, having only played in the Europa League for the Red Devils, as one of the key factors in this potential deal.

When taking everything into consideration, Matic does look like someone Simeone has been missing in his current lineup.

The missing link

Atletico Madrid have gone through a massive rebuild last summer with many big and experienced names departing the Spanish capital.

The likes of Antoine Griezmann, Diego Godin, Juanfran and Lucas Hernandez all left as the Rojiblancos made an estimated profit of €311m (£280m) which they promptly invested in some young blood.

[ad_pod ]

But even though young prodigies like Joao Felix are bound to develop into superstars at some point in the future, they are certainly lacking some experience and leadership at the moment.

This is exactly where Matic comes into play.

The now 31-year-old midfielder has definitely fallen out of favour with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having only played five games across all competitions in the current 2019/20 campaign, amassing just 340 minutes under his belt.

Not to mention that his contract with the Red Devils is due to expire next summer, which would make him an attainable target for Atletico Madrid.

Seeing how he’s not really playing that much, or at all, and Manchester United themselves are not firing on all cylinders with the team currently stuck in seventh place, it’s not a stretch to assume the Serbian might be on his way come January already.

With the likes of Scott McTominay, Andreas Pereira and Fred in Solskjaer’s midfield, the Red Devils wouldn’t miss Matic all that much but he could be a big scoop for Atletico, who are looking to add experience into their ranks.

The Serbian midfielder might be that missing link to finally get Simeone’s men back on track.

Only time will tell, though.

Wolves’ Leander Dendoncker may have had his career saved at the club with new role

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Wolverhampton Wanderers soared into the top half of the Premier League for the first time since the opening day as they eased to victory on Sunday afternoon.

Nuno Santo’s side defeated local rivals Aston Villa 2-1 at Molineux to move into eighth position from 15th with only one other team in the entire division losing fewer games than the west Midlands club, Liverpool.

Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Wolves are quietly going under the radar after a rough start, which was in no doubt down to them adapting to the demands a Europa League qualification campaign brings.

They have also had to deal with significant injuries whereas last season they were pretty lucky in that department.

Willy Boly is expected to be out for the foreseeable future leaving them awfully short at centre-half, even if it is through the stubbornness of the man in charge.

On the Chalkboard

Nuno is yet to play Jesus Vallejo in the league or in Europe since the 28-year-old picked up his nasty training ground injury with him opting instead for wing-back Matt Doherty and more recently midfielder Leander Dendoncker, who is valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, in the role.

They have both been utilised over Max Kilman too, although he did impress on Thursday night against Slovan Bratislava.

However, in doing so, Wolves may have found their future at right centre-back as the Belgian put in his best performance of the season against Villa on Sunday.

The 24-year-old won five aerial duels, recorded a passing success rate of 89.2%, and managed 11 clearances, per WhoScored, which makes him appear to have all the traits to suit Nuno’s philosophy.

Having made 22 appearances this season, it may be a little unfair to say that his Wolves career was in any sort of jeopardy, but Birmingham Live revealed that the club are to pursue a central midfielder in January, which could see his standing in the side decrease significantly.

It is unlikely that neither last season’s eight-assist king Joao Moutinho or the Real Madrid-linked Ruben Neves are dropped, even more so after this weekend’s victory as they combined for the opener.

Until his move to centre-back, Dendoncker’s performances just weren’t at the level required having managed over a 6.70 rating just once in nine games, which only strengthens the argument that any additions would knock him back in the pecking order.

Therefore, Nuno’s masterstroke decision to play him in defence has been game-changing and may have just saved him his future at the club.

The Portuguese chief is surely going to continue to trust him over Vallejo, and then it’s down to whether he still prefers him over Ryan Bennett, who has been out injured recently.

Jose Mourinho’s half-time team-talk vs Olympiacos revealed by Dele Alli

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Dele Alli has revealed what Jose Mourinho told his Tottenham Hotspur players at half-time of the Champions League win against Olympiacos, per The London Evening Standard.

What’s he said?

Spurs fell 2-0 behind in a game that they needed to win to secure qualification for the knockout stages of the competition.

However, Alli pulled a goal back on the stroke of half-time after a grievous error in defence.

Spurs went on to win the game 4-2 thanks to a brace from Harry Kane and a sweet half-volley from Serge Aurier.

And Alli has now lifted the lid on exactly what Mourinho said in the dressing room.

[ad_pod ]

He said: “Basically, (Mourinho) told us at half-time we couldn’t get any worse. We knew that already. And (he said) that we had to go out in the second half with freedom, be calmer on the ball, play the way we know we can and we did that.

“We knew what we had to do. In the end, it was a great positive result. I think it was down to character and belief, the quality we have in the squad. Personally, I felt like I was at fault for their second goal and I wanted to help the team.

“To get the goal just before half-time gave us the momentum going into the second half. I think we showed our quality in the second half.”

New mentality

Would Spurs have come back under Mauricio Pochettino’s management?

One has to wonder.

But Mourinho’s honesty at half-time, coupled with his back-to-basics approach that has routinely seen the goalkeeper kick long and has skipped the tiki-taka-esque build-up play, saw Spurs roar back to book their place in the knockout stages.

It is a good thing too.

Mourinho appeared to go for broke before the half-hour stage as he substituted Eric Dier and replaced him with Christian Eriksen, perhaps because he knows the chances of beating Bayern Munich in Germany are slim at best. That’s the Bayern that beat Pochettino’s team 7-2.

Having a manager that has a win-at-all-costs mentality could change things for Spurs and Tuesday was just the latest evidence of that.

This was a major win that was pulled from the fire; think back to the clash in Greece, when Spurs surrendered a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2. Mourinho wouldn’t have stood for that, just like he didn’t stand for this first-half performance.

Mourinho didn’t stand for Eric Dier’s performance, either, substituting him in the first-half. Take a look at what fans said about his display!

Newcastle fans’ treatment of Steve Bruce was wrong, says Chris Sutton

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Chris Sutton has voiced his support of Steve Bruce and believes that he is beginning to prove his doubters wrong.

What did he say?

Bruce was not the manager many Magpies supporters wanted even before he was appointed, and in the months since he has faced an uphill struggle to win them over.

Initial results didn’t help, and after the 5-0 defeat to Leicester things began to look bleak, with some fans likely wishing for a return to the Rafa Benitez days.

Since then, however, there has been progress under Bruce, and back-to-back wins suggest that what he is implementing could lead to success, and therefore fans should have afforded him more time.

That is certainly the view of Chris Sutton, who told BBC 5 Live’s Monday Night Club [11/11]:

“What managers don’t get now is time & Steve Bruce always needed time to implement his own style of play & I think there must be Newcastle fans out there who will be embarrassed with the way that they have treated Steve Bruce & the fact he is from the area.”

Watch Newcastle United Videos With StreamFootball.tv Below

Signs of progress?

The recent weeks have shown that the appointment of Bruce may not have been a bad decision after all, but it is too early to assess his time at the club since he has managed just 12 league games so far.

He seems to be getting the best out of Allan Saint-Maximin and made a great call to hand Matty Longstaff his debut against Manchester United, but equally the Magpies have often looked toothless in attack and he is yet to get Joelinton firing.

The Brazilian has just one of Newcastle’s 11 league goals, and the team’s lack of cutting edge in attack that was evident under Rafa Benitez has continued, which doesn’t reflect well on Bruce.

Sutton is correct that he deserves time to implement his ideas as there have been positives to take, which means that fan opposition to him was unwarranted.

If Bruce can continue to bring the best out of players, with the likes of Jonjo Shelvey and Isaac Hayden also playing well, then Newcastle could continue to move up the table and, with a bit more investment, start becoming more ambitious on and off the pitch.
