Fabian Delph’s showing sums up Everton’s inconsistent start

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

Everton’s inconsistent start to the season continued on Sunday with a 3-1 defeat against Bournemouth, and the performance of Fabian Delph somewhat summed up their efforts.

The Toffees are a very difficult team to predict this term. They began by looking very hard to beat with two clean sheets from two but struggled at the opposite end of the pitch.

Defensive issues have since been exposed, though, and they have conceded nine goals from their last four matches in all competitions.

Two of those goals came against League One side Lincoln, too, which remains their only away victory of the season.

At home it is a different story, and Delph’s introduction against Wolves looked like it could kickstart Everton’s season, with an uncharacteristic three goals scored and the former Manchester City man providing energy in midfield – making up for the loss of Idrissa Gueye.

However, despite having 59.5% of possession, Everton failed to get going against Bournemouth. Delph kept things ticking over and at times there was good link-up play going forward, with Richarlison in particular taking up good positions, but there was no end product other than the Brazilian’s strike which hit the bar.

The lack of leadership in the team is becoming a significant presence. An experienced figure like Delph should have helped that, but aside from a first-half scolding of his teammates he failed to lead by example.

As a result, the record of never overturning a Premier League deficit into a win under Marco silva will likely continue.

To credit Delph, he once again showed energy and desire throughout, and the Toffees could consider themselves unfortunate to have fallen behind when in the ascendancy in the second half.

Mistakes were too frequent, however, and the likes of Delph became sloppy on and off the ball. According to Whoscored, he made two fouls, but was slightly fortunate a heavy challenge on Callum Wilson wasn’t punished in the first half, as he picked up a yellow card moments later.

Due to the role he plays, the 29-year-old will likely commit a lot of fouls over the course of the season, but it is a small price to pay for the way he breaks up play.

Everton reduced Bournemouth to just 40% possession and that was key to reducing their threat from open play – Delph’s five tackles playing a huge part in that.

His own contribution on the ball helped Everton to 480 passes, but as a team Everton failed to apply significant pressure to the Bournemouth backline, instead often resulting to crossing – with 23 crosses attempted in the match.

Delph was insufficient in other areas, too, and his failure to deal with Ryan Fraser’s free-kick led to him deflecting the ball beyond Jordan Pickford, and from then Everton crumbled.

He failed to make a single clearance in the match, or an interception – an area where Gueye excelled with 2.2 per game last season – and that was a contributing factor to the ease at which Bournemouth were able to get through on goal, having 13 shots despite their minimal possession.

Wolves fans heap praise on Matt Doherty after 2-0 win over Watford

[ad_pod ]Some Wolves fans have taken to Twitter to heap praise on Matt Doherty, after the Irishman found the back of the net in what was a wonderful individual performance from the wing-back against Watford.Doherty’s opener put Wolves on the way to their first Premier League win of the season, after he tapped in from close range following a fine team move.It was the 27-year-old’s one and only shot on target, while he also recorded one key pass. The defensive side of his game did not suffer as a result of his attacking play, as Doherty managed to complete two tackles and also made four interceptions.

The Wolves No.2 has been left on the sidelines at times as Nuno Espirito Santo tested Adama Traore out in a right wing-back role, a position in which the Spaniard has done well in as we have already detailed.

However, one fan below said that Traore doesn’t have Doherty’s knack of getting into goalscoring positions, with another supporter echoing that sentiment in saying that the 6 foot man’s football brain is better.

Leicester star Ricardo Pereira hailed for "outstanding" form by ex-Foxes man

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Leicester defender Steve Walsh has hailed Ricardo Pereira for his performances for the Foxes.

What did he say?

The Portugal international arrived from Porto in the summer of 2018, and firmly established himself in the Leicester first-team. The right-back made 37 appearances across all competitions, scoring two goals and providing a further seven assists in his debut campaign for the club.

Now, Walsh has paid a glowing tribute to the instant impact the 25-year-old has made, and suggested his form may lead to transfer interest from other sides.

He said: “He’s been outstanding, he really has. He’s a top top player and when you’ve got ability that he’s got, interest will show. I think all the players at Leicester are fairly happy. They’re happy with the style of football and the manager and they’re settled.”

Shrewd business

As the Premier League’s big sides continue to spend shed loads of money on signing the very best players available, Leicester’s coup in signing Pereira is certainly something to shout about. The full-back enjoyed an impressive first season for the club, proving himself to be quite the offensive weapon.

The Portuguese man averaged 0.7 shots, 0.9 key passes and 1.9 dribbles per game last year in the Premier League, and this season, he has maintained that same level of attacking efficiency, with his dribbling numbers even going up to 2.3 per game.

Such was his success, Pereira bagged both the the Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards at the end of the last campaign, and is consistently showing why he is amongst the best right-backs in the division.

Everton defender Seamus Coleman is slammed by Ireland fans after draw v Georgia

Everton’s shocking league form may well be creeping into the international break if Seamus Coleman’s performance was anything to go by.

The Republic of Ireland managed to keep their unbeaten record in Euro 2020 qualifying intact after a 0-0 stalemate against Georgia.

Mick McCarthy’s men failed to inspire against the home side , though, as they managed just 45% possession and three attempts on target, per SofaScore.

The Boys in Green are now tied for the lead in Group D after Denmark’s late 1-0 win over Switzerland on Saturday evening.

In the eyes of several ROI supporters, their captain’s performance particularly stood out as being poor with one fan labelling him “massively overrated”.

Everton have lost four straight Premier League matches with Coleman starting in each one, and it appears that dire run of form has continued onto the international stage.

Others said he was “woeful” and “abysmal”.

One member of the Irish support even claimed the nation continued to overachieve with too many “mundane workhorses,” making a direct reference to the 31-year-old Toffees’ man.

Crystal Palace fans discuss the Holmesdale Fanatics’ impact since seating change

[ad_pod ]

Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to discuss the Holmesdale Fanatics’ move into the centre of the Holmesdale Road stand at Selhurst Park.

As The Athletic’s Matt Woosnam details in this article about the group’s move from the bottom left corner of the stand, the Fanatics were keen to switch location to enable the sound of their efforts to travel more, rather than be lost in the space between the Holmesdale and the Arthur Wait stand.

It was a process that required some smoothing over from Palace chief Steve Parish, with half-price season-tickets being offered to those who had to be displaced from the middle of the Holmesdale as a result, although the move hasn’t impressed some fans on Twitter.

One supporter said that the atmosphere was “better last season”, while another said that they can “hardly be heard” in their new position from the halfway line in the Arthur Wait stand.

Let’s take a look at some more of what the Palace fans have been saying about the atmosphere…

Liverpool fans react as Harry Wilson’s fine form continues

[ad_pod ]

Harry Wilson continued his fine start to the 2019-20 Premier League campaign with a goal in Bournemouth’s 3-1 win at Southampton on Friday night.

The Wales international has now struck three times in five Premier League outings for Eddie Howe’s side at the start of the new season.

The 22-year-old is, of course, only on loan at the Vitality Stadium from Liverpool.

Wilson starred during a loan spell at Derby County last term, but it was felt that another year away from Anfield would be best for his development.

The attacker is proving that he can compete at Premier League level, though, and a number of Liverpool fans have been on social media praising their player.

Indeed, when Wilson took to social media on Friday night to comment on the victory over Southampton, the response section was full of Liverpool supporters.

Crystal Palace fans react as Christian Benteke says he could play for Liverpool

Some Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to react after Christian Benteke said that he thinks he could still do a job in Liverpool’s front three.

The Belgium international responded with “yeah” when asked by Sport Bible if he thinks he could still play for the Reds, a comment that has triggered a reaction from some Palace fans on Twitter.

Why, might you ask?

Well, it’s been well documented that the 6 foot 3 forward has struggled significantly in front of goal over the course of the last few seasons, scoring just four goals in his last 57 appearances across all competitions.

Contrastingly, Liverpool’s current forwards are amongst the best in the world, having recently won the Champions League with Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane both winning the Premier League Golden Boot last season.

To be blunt, there is simply no substance to Benteke’s claims that he could play for Liverpool.

He has been rightly mocked by some fans below, with one saying that he should probably try and get in the Palace XI first.

Let’s take a look at some more of the Twitter reaction…

Barcelona fans drooling over Pedri after impressive display

Barcelona are currently pretty stacked with generational talents, it seems.

Loads of them have taken to social media and Twitter to voice their opinions about the youngster, showering him with praise.

It seems that between him and some other Barcelona youngsters and high potential players, many of the fans feel the future is definitely looking very bright at this moment.

Arsenal fans react as Wilfried Zaha sets up Nicolas Pepe

Arsenal fans have been reacting to Nicolas Pepe’s goal for the Ivory Coast after an incredible assist from summer target Wilfried Zaha.

Zaha, aged 26, played a part in his team’s successes during Ivory Coast’s 3-1 win against DR Congo on Sunday.

Supporters were in awe as his superb skill led to Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe getting on the scoresheet. The Ivorian netted in injury time along with Wilfried Kanon to secure the win during the all-African friendly match.

The Gunners were heavily linked with the Crystal Palace winger during the summer – with BBC Sport even reporting on a £40m offer – and Zaha admitted that his “head was a bit all over the place” after the summer transfer window closed, per BBC Africa (via the Daily Mail).

Arsenal fans were excited to see Zaha produce the moment of magic which led to their club’s £72m signing scoring from close range.

One supporter said that it would be an “insane statement” from the club to capture the former Manchester United midfielder, while others predicted he’ll be coming to the Emirates soon.
