Manchester United’s Jesse Lingard has England status debated on talkSPORT

[ad_pod ]What’s the deal with Jesse Lingard? The Manchester United forward hasn’t scored or assisted a single goal in the Premier League since January, but he finds himself in the privileged position of wearing an England shirt. It’s a real headscratcher.Of course, managers have their preferences and favourites, and one thing Gareth Southgate and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are almost guaranteed from playing the 26-year-old is high pressure and running – two very compatible traits in the modern game. But then you have to ask yourself: at what point is this not enough?Watch Manchester United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Lingard has just 17 goals and 12 assists in 115 top-flight games; his best season saw him claim just eight goals and six assists. How exactly does that output equate to international standards? Realistically, it doesn’t.

Let’s consider for a moment the impact of blind loyalty towards Lingard. Leicester City’s James Maddison is just one attacking option we consider more viable than his United counterpart, with 16 direct goal contributions already to his name in the Premier League after just 40 appearances.

Would his England integration have come sooner without Lingard in the picture? How might that affect the oh-so-important bonding stages before major tournaments? You know, the very thing that was lacking during our ‘Golden Generation’ and has since been attributed to their failure.

Mason Mount is another up and coming star, with two goals for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side in four appearances. Will he now be benched to accommodate Lingard? These are queries that need answering, especially with Euro 2020 on the horizon.

TalkSPORT hosts Perry Groves and Jason Cundy have recently debated the United man’s inclusion in the squad…

Barcelona fans want to see Ousmane Dembele sold

[ad_pod ]

Ousmane Dembele just made his big return a couple of days ago when Barcelona welcomed Villarreal to the Camp Nou.

The 22-year-old star participated in Blaugrana’s curtain-raiser on the opening day of the 2019/20 La Liga season but got injured straight after and we didn’t see him on the pitch for quite a long time.

Now, however, he is finally fully fit and tallied 45 minutes in the clash against the Yellow Submarine.

Still, if the recent reports coming from the Independent are true, Dembele is on Manchester United’s radar and the Red Devils could move for the young forward soon.

Upon seeing this transfer update, loads of Barcelona fans took to Twitter and social media to voice their opinions on the matter.

And as it turns out, really many of them want to see the 22-year-old sold and they are urging the club to do so and recoup some of the money they invested in the Frenchman.

Indeed, the attacking midfielder has now netted in his last two appearances for the club – including a very late winner against Blackpool on Saturday afternoon.

It was a smart finish from O’Hare as well, with the youngster dancing into the penalty area before picking out the back of the net to hand his loan club a very important three points.

A number of Villa fans have been on social media offering their views on the strike, and a selection of their Twitter reaction is available to view below:

Leeds fans rave over Illan Meslier following U23 display

[ad_pod ]

Leeds fans have been left drooling over Illan Meslier following his display for the club’s U23 side on Monday afternoon.

In a game that saw Tyler Roberts return from injury, the French goalkeeper was in fine form as he made a number of impressive saves to ensure Leeds drew the game 0-0.

A highlight reel shows him making two sprawling stops as well as denying a penalty.

Consequently, a host of supporters were quick to laud his performance as one described the teenager as class.

A fellow fan claimed the 19-year-old was already a better shot-stopper than Kiko Casilla whilst one hailed his ability to come out for crosses.

Meslier arrived from Lorient in the summer on loan but is yet to play for the first team. He has found himself on the bench but didn’t even receive minutes in the Carabao Cup.

Instead he’s had to settle for game time in the U23s ahead of a potential permanent transfer next summer.

According to his parent club, there is the possibility of Leeds buying him outright.

Here’s the best of the reaction.

Liverpool’s James Milner posts on Instagram after goal at Stadium MK

A quick check of the midfielder’s Transfermarkt page shows that he has played against MK Dons just once in his career, and that appearance came on Wednesday night.

However, Milner played in Milton Keynes for England’s U21 team back in the day, and he netted on his last appearance there against Bulgaria all the back in 2007.

The former Man City man made reference to that goal in a post before the game, and after the match, he was quick to let everybody know that his scoring streak is still alive.

With MK Dons sitting in League One it’s hard to envisage Milner getting too many opportunities to play there before he hangs up his boots, but he’ll certainly be hoping to extend his scoring streak should he ever visit Milton Keynes again.

Real Madrid dropped the ball by taking off Casemiro and Sergio Ramos

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Real Madrid fans ended up going through some genuine drama this weekend when Levante were welcomed to Santiago Bernabeu.

Los Blancos did take all three points in the end but Zinedine Zidane’s decision to give Casemiro and Sergio Ramos their rest almost cost them the game on Saturday.

On the chalkboard

The clash couldn’t have started better for Real.

By the time the teams were sent to the locker room for half-time, the Galacticos were already 3-0 up and seemingly with another impressive victory in the bag. But Levante had other ideas.

In the second half, it was all about the guests and their efforts to claw their way back into the game, fighting to salvage a nigh-on miraculous point.

Even though they somehow managed to reduce the gap to 3-2, they just couldn’t muster enough strength for one final push and one final goal to get the draw on the night. Still, they were close and Real completely crumbled defensively in that second half.

And taking into consideration that Zidane decided to rest Casemiro and Ramos by taking them off early, it really isn’t that big of a surprise.

A risk worth taking?

Both Casemiro and Ramos were subbed off on the hour mark as Zidane didn’t want to risk them sustaining an injury. On paper, that’s fair enough.

It’s something the Frenchman acknowledged in his post-match press conference and looking at the players who are already sidelined for Real Madrid, it really didn’t seem worth the risk. But on the other hand, that single decision almost cost them the entire game.

Of course, the Galacticos conceded one goal before the duo were taken off but the remainder of the second half was extremely difficult for them as a whole. Five of Levante’s eight shots came after the substitution and resulted in one additional goal.

This becomes more visible when we take into account their contribution to the team prior to them leaving the pitch. Casemiro tallied two tackles, one interception and three clearances while Ramos had one tackle, one interception and two clearances.

Quite clearly, both were doing their part in the defensive phase of the game.

The decision to take them off weakened the XI significantly and even though Zidane was just playing it safe, it was still a substitution that almost lost them the three points on Saturday.

That they got over the line was more by luck than judgement.

Wolves boss Nuno Santo must put more faith in Pedro Neto

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

At last. Wolves finally picked up the first win of their Premier League season.

The league’s rock-bottom side, Watford, were in town as the west Midlands side sent them back down the M1 with further woes.

Nuno Santo stuck with the 3-4-3 formation that he deployed at Crystal Palace only last week meaning Matt Doherty kept his place at right wing-back with Adama Traore playing further forward yet again.

The 27-year-old opened the scoring early in the first half after being expertly teed up by Pedro Neto, who perhaps was a surprise inclusion as a replacement for the injured Diogo Jota.

Doherty then turned semi-provider as his whipped ball into the box was headed on by Morgan Gibbs-White with the ball being diverted home via Watford defender Daryl Janmaat.

Neto’s performance should give his fellow countryman plenty to think about in the coming weeks as he looked electric on the left side of the front three.

Even though he was given just 57 minutes to showcase his talent, the 19-year-old set up their opener and created two big chances on top of that with defence-splitting key passes.

The assist in itself showed just a glimpse of what Neto can offer the squad.

Starting along the left flank, the winger’s dynamic turn of pace gave him enough time and space to fizzle a ball across the face of goal to allow Doherty to slot home the easiest of finishes.

It is that sort of attacking nous that has been absent to date as Wolves had only scored seven goals in the six league games previous to this one.

Now that the £6.3m-rated winger has repaid the faith shown in him by being handed his first Premier League start of the season, Neto should continue to be played even if it means at the expense of other key stars amongst the team.

He’s young and hungry, and hasn’t had much game time at all – players like Raul Jimenez have played over 40 times this calendar year alone and could do with a rest here and there, especially with games coming thick and fast on both the European and domestic front.

The Wolves boss would be a fool not to utilise Neto more this season.

Sheffield Wednesday can replicate Howard Wilkinson stint with Danny Cowley

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Leon Wobschall, of the Yorkshire Post, believes that Lincoln City manager Danny Cowley has the potential to be the ‘new Howard Wilkinson’ at Sheffield Wednesday, should he be appointed.

What’s he said?

The Owls enter the international break with an air of uncertainty hanging over caretaker boss Lee Bullen’s head after his side endured a poor run of results towards the end of August.

Pressure appears to be mounting on the 48-year-old’s head following three defeats in four matches in the Championship, which has led to rumours circulating in the press about who their next manager could be.

Early in the week, it was Tony Pulis, who The Sun claimed would be revisited should Bullen face the axe, but Sky Sports then reported that the club were in ‘advanced talks’ with Cowley.

Wobschall has weighed in with his own thoughts following this week’s news, declaring he could replicate Wilkinson’s footsteps of yesteryear, he said:

“Sheffield Wednesday followers will recall some heady days in the mid-Eighties under one-time Abbeydale School master Howard Wilkinson with genuine fondness to this day.

“The call of home-town club Wednesday proved irresistible for Wilkinson in 1983 when he was at an almost identical age to what the older and more senior Cowley brother is now at 40 and possessed a similar background in the game after starting out in non-league circles at Boston United before moving onto Notts County.”

Would help to resonate with the fanbase

The paths of these two managers, despite being over two decades apart is eerily similar, and if Cowley does get the job, it could help him settle right in at Hillsborough.

Wilkinson is regarded as one of Wednesday’s most successful managers having led the club to Division One for the first time in 14 years back in 1984.

The Owls have been without Premier League football since 2000, so if Cowley were to come in and replicate that he would have followed suit, but instead banishing an even longer period of time.

The fact that he would be following in the very same footsteps as Wilkinson, having been a school teacher and then working his way up through non-league football, will only help the fanbase resonate with a man that has never managed higher than the level he’s currently at.

If Cowley is appointed then the stars could well align.

Nottingham Forest’s Rafa Mir hints at injury in latest Instagram post

Others asked reputable journalists on Twitter if he was injured.

Unfortunately for the City Ground faithful, this post indicates that Mir won’t be fit for this weekend’s clash with table-topping Swansea City.

This leaves the Reds with a serious lack of depth up top, as Lewis Grabban is now the only fit first-team striker available for Sabri Lamouchi’s side.
