Norwich City let a one-goal lead slip to succumb to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Championship side Brentford on Wednesday afternoon.

The Canaries took the lead through Emiliano Buendia, but the Bees bit back with a strike of their own just two minutes later.

Brentford attacker Ollie Watkins later cashed in on some very poor defending to put Brentford in the lead after the break, before teeing up Ethan Pinnock to seal a 3-1 victory for the Championship side.

Timm Klose made his first appearance of pre-season, captaining the side from the centre of defence, with Kenny McLean and Josip Drmic also making appearances.

This was Norwich’s fourth pre-season game of the summer, following on from their tour of Germany. The newly-promoted side registered two wins and a draw in Germany, including a win versus the Bundesliga giants Schalke.

The loss is Norwich’s first of pre-season and came just over two weeks before Daniel Farke’s side kick-off their Premier League campaign against Liverpool away at Anfield. Norwich City have scored nine goals in their four pre-season games so far, a show of their attacking prowess following their 93 goals in the Championship last season.

However, yesterday’s friendly would’ve sent Farke two warning signs about keeping a lead and letting complacency creep in against weaker opposition.

Yesterday’s friendly showed how Norwich can start games, but the eventual loss by three goals is quite stark especially against a Championship side. In January, Fulham and Southampton were leading the way for most points lost from winning position, with 15 each. Norwich need to heed this warning and learn from the lessons of how not to let a lead slip.

Against lower quality opposition complacency will always remain a factor, so Farke needs to ensure he can drill in 100% commitment against all opposition sides next season. It has happened in the past to many Premier League sides, like last season, when Manchester United were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Derby County at home.

Norwich are returning to the Premier League, and have been sent warning signs of what could be up and coming. They need to take them on board to make sure they don’t occur this season, or they could struggle.

The left-sided forward enjoyed an impressive 2018/19 campaign with Super Lig outfit Kasimpasa, who he notched nine goals and nine assists for in 34 appearances – not bad at all.

Trezeguet is also putting his name on the map at the Africa Cup of Nations this summer with Egypt alongside Liverpool man Mohamed Salah. The 24-year-old has already grabbed a goal and an assist in three outings for his country at the tournament.

However, despite those encouraging signs, bringing Trezeguet to Goodison Park would represent a major risk for the Toffees given the attacker’s lack of pedigree in leagues outside of Turkey.

Despite having a world class namesake in former France hero David, the 5 foot 11 Super Lig star has never done anything of note outside of the Turkish top-flight – in fact, he has only ever played in his native Egypt and Belgium, where he didn’t pull up any trees due to a total of 14 goals in 126 appearances.

Furthermore, how many players come from the Turkish league and prove to be hits in the Premier League?

The Toffees’ own Cenk Tosun hasn’t, scoring just nine goals in 43 outings and finding starts hard to come by – 15 of his 25 Premier League appearances last term came from the substitutes’ bench.

If he had been banging in 30 goals and recording 20 assists a season over there, maybe it would be a a risk worth taking for Marcel Brands and Marco Silva, but nine goals and nine assists doesn’t represent anything too special given the quality of the opposition.

As shown by the graphic above, Trezeguet isn’t afraid of shooting – he takes a whopping 4 shots per game on average.

With shooting numbers like that, it would be a crime if the 24-year-old didn’t get at least nine goals over the course of the season.

His dribbling numbers of 3.3 completed per game are a bit more impressive, but nevertheless, this would be a major risk for the Merseysiders.

Nuno Espirito Santo won the Manager of the Month award in September 2018.

However, it proved to be a bad omen for the club as they only won one of their next seven games, a run which included defeats against Cardiff City and Huddersfield.

Wolves started the season brilliantly, and once they got out of their rough patch in Autumn, they pushed forward to clinch the best finish by a promoted side since Ipswich in 2001.

Sunderland fans have been discussing the lack of goals from their strikers, and to say fans are concerned about the upcoming campaign would be an understatement.

The Black Cats fell short of automatic promotion by six points last season, which is made all the more infuriating by the fact they drew a whopping 15 out of 46 league games 1-1.

Jack Ross is struggling massively to figure out how to break teams down, open games up and find that second or third goal that would put the match to bed.

And the fans, who were forced to watch two separate Wembley heartbreaks last season, are now worried that the lack of attacking fluidity has spread to their strikers in pre-season.

Ross’ side have beaten South Shields 2-0, drawn 0-0 with Benfica B and been beaten 1-0 by Belenenses so far this summer, but none of the front men in the squad have found the back of the net.

Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke combined for just eight goals in 47 league appearances last term, and a similar output this time around would make it extremely difficult to earn promotion.

Leicester are reportedly closing in on a £40m deal to bring back Youri Tielemans to the King Power according to The Telegraph.

What’s the word?

Up until now, Leicester’s transfer window had been fairly quiet, but they’ve now sparked into life.

Last week they added defender James Justin to their ranks whilst they’re also reportedly set to sign Ayoze Perez from Newcastle.

However, they could be on the verge of bringing back one of their star men from the second half of 2018/19.

The Telegraph suggest that Brendan Rodgers is finally closing in on a deal to bring 23-cap Tielemans to the King Power with a £40m fee potentially being paid to Monaco in order to land the young Monaco man.

Game-changing for Leicester

Leicester haven’t been near the top-six since they remarkably won the league in 2015/16. However, by bringing back Tielemans, they could well find themselves challenging for European football once again.

When the Belgian arrived last term, he helped to revitalise the football club alongside Rodgers.

In ten games he played under the Northern Irishman, he lost just three times with one of those defeats coming against the might of Manchester City.

When Claude Puel was in charge, Leicester had struggled and sat 12th on 32 points after a 4-1 defeat against Crystal Palace.

Yet, under their new manager, they rallied and picked up another 20 points, finishing ninth and five points behind Wolves.

The latter would ultimately go onto claim a spot in Europe but by landing Tielemans, a player who was easily one of the best creative outlets in the league when he arrived, he could help them launch an assault on the top seven.

This is a player who scored three goals and claimed four assists in just 13 appearances for the Foxes, appearing to be one of the few missing pieces of the jigsaw.

Leicester had capable scorers and creative outlets in Jamie Vardy and James Maddison who contributed to goals 36 between them.

But they were missing someone who could really drive the team forward from deep.

Their midfield was one dimensional with Wilfred Ndidi and Nampalys Mendy but Tielemans offered a different option that took the Foxes to the next level. He ended the season as their fourth-best player in terms of goal involvements despite only being there for half the season.

If he can sustain the same consistency as he showed during his loan spell, he could well lead a charge towards European football for Leicester if he signs permanently.

Lucas Torreira is officially back with the Arsenal squad after his extended holiday came to an end.

The Uruguayan has participated in this year’s iteration of the Copa America with his nation, but they were sadly eliminated in the quarter-finals by the eventual finalists Peru.

Torreira played three of the total four games throughout the tournament but he was unfortunately unable to help his country to glory.

Even more importantly, two of those assists came during the Europa League campaign, helping Arsenal reach the final.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t take the trophy as Chelsea were the better team on the night, but it could be another big season at the Emirates for the Uruguayan.

Atletico Madrid are stepping up their pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier, per The Sun.

What’s the word?

The Spanish club are reportedly keen to bring in a new right-back this summer.

And The Sun report that Trippier, who endured a difficult season at Spurs, has emerged as a possible acquisition, along with PSG’s Thomas Meunier.

Indeed, Atleti are said to be seeking a long-term replacement for 34-year-old Juanfran.

Juventus are also credited with an interest in Trippier by the aforementioned report, with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino set to sanction the departure of the former Manchester City defender this summer.

£25m is the figure mooted in the article, although it’s not clear whether that’s Atletico’s or Tottenham’s valuation of the player.

A great fee

Doing business at £25m is a no-brainer for Spurs.

Trippier enjoyed a fantastic World Cup as England reached the semi-finals, even scoring a majestic free-kick in the last-four clash with Croatia.

But he endured a season that was characterised by sloppy errors, namely a terrible own goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Trippier can quite clearly be upgraded if Spurs wish and a transfer fee of £25m would allow the club to reinvest properly.

Spurs should snap Atleti’s hand off.

Former Rangers star Neil Murray believes that the Europa League games are the nerviest of the season and could have an impact on Steven Gerard’s side.

What’s he said?

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, Murray believes that qualification to the Europa League group stages will be important for the club as they look to build for a successful season, and it will be nervy.

The Light Blues face FC Midtjylland in the penultimate round of Europa League qualification, knowing they face either Legia Warsaw or Atromitos in the final round should they defeat the Danes.

Murray thinks it’s important for a club like Rangers to be in European competition, stating: “Without a doubt, these are the nerviest games of the whole season. There is a lot of prestige and finance attached to reaching the group stages of Europe.”

Do Rangers need European football this season?

Murray’s claims that the “prestige and finance” of getting to the group stages of the tournament is correct for a club like Rangers. Yet, is that what the club need just now?

Obviously, all money earned is welcome and it’s a nice experience to play in front of packed stadiums across Europe but the club should have their eyes on a different objective this season.

Last year was a season of two halves, the form in the second half of the season was brilliant, with results a bit more patchy in the opening half of the campaign. While a number of factors aided to this (Gerrard getting more experienced as a manager and the arrivals of Jermain Defoe and Glen Kamara in January) not having to play Thursday-Sunday must’ve helped, as they dropped out of the group stages of the Europa League in December.

Last season’s split in results from the first half of the campaign and the new year could be reason enough to suggest that dropping out of the Europa League wouldn’t be terminal for the Gers’ season.
