Matt Targett can fit the collective Liverpool mould much the same way as Andy Robertson

Liverpool will set their sights on the future with Southampton’s Matthew Targett, after releasing Alberto Moreno at the end of this month, according to TEAMtalk.

Indeed, the Reds are apparently ready to raid Southampton once again, after signing Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk, Nathaniel Clyne, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana from them in recent years.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is thought to be looking for competition for Andrew Robertson, who arguably had his best season yet for Liverpool, booking himself a place in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year for the first time, and former England under-21 star Targett is being considered.

It is reported that the Southampton youngster would consider a move to Anfield but has been encouraged by England coaches to seek regular first-team football elsewhere in a bid to stake his claim in the international first-team setup.

Targett struggled to overthrow Ryan Bertrand from the starting spot last season, making just 21 appearances in total, 13 of which were in the starting line-up. But that isn’t to say he doesn’t possess the ability to develop into a star.

The 23-year-old most definitely has age on his side, and his statistics aren’t half bad either. According to WhoScored, he produced on average 1.7 tackles (compared to Robertson’s 2.2), 1.7 interceptions (almost double Robertson’s 0.8), 1.9 clearances (Robertson: 1.3) and was dribbled past 0.9 times – the same amount as his prospective Liverpool senior.

In terms of his attacking ability, he doesn’t fare much worse, either. Targett provided 0.7 shots per game and 1.4 key passes (compared to Robertson’s 0.4 and 1.4, respectively), and while his assists and dribbling statistics do pale in comparison to the flying Scotsman’s, there isn’t many in the league that would come out on top in that contest.

One of the major themes of Klopp’s work in making Liverpool a force to be reckoned with again has been his ability to pick players up from the lower half of the Premier League and mould them into better players. Robertson himself is perhaps the key example of this but Georginio Wijandlum and Xherdan Shaqiri have fit the collective well after moving from relegated sides.

Even as a potential back-up, this move makes complete sense from Liverpool’s perspective.

Liverpool fans, would you be happy with Targett providing competition? Do you think there’s any chance anyone could dislodge Robertson? Let us know in the comments below…

Arsenal fans on Twitter react to Markus Schubert rumour

[ad_pod ]

Arsenal fans on Twitter have been reacting after a transfer rumour from The Independent was shared by a fan account on the social media platform.

The rumour stated that the Gunners are close to signing young German goalkeeping talent Markus Schubert from 2. Bundesliga outfit Dynamo Dresden.

The deal will be a free transfer if it goes through and Unai Emery is looking to loan the 21-year-old out in his first season as a Gunner.

Normally the chance to sign one of the brightest starlets in Europe would heavily excite members of the Emirates Stadium faithful, but they’re not all convinced this time around.

They were in fact split on the Schubert rumour on Twitter with some liking the sound of the shot-stopper and others suggesting a move is “needless” due to the presence of Emiliano Martinez at the club, while trying to remind Emery of his present priorities.

Ridiculous! Liverpool fans react to outrageous Kylian Mbappe speculation

[ad_pod ]

Lots of Liverpool fans have taken to Twitter in a frenzy after talk of a move to Anfield for Kylian Mbappe started to hot up, but only through some questionably weak links largely based around holiday destinations and social media activity.

Firstly, respected journalist Paul Joyce from The Times strangely retweeted a video of Kylian Mbappe showing his first day in the United States on his own official Twitter account.

You can relive Liverpool’s Champions League celebrations in glorious 2D thanks to the guys at 442oons in the video below…

Secondly, Mbappe himself posted a picture alongside LeBron James, who is a 2% stakeholder in Liverpool Football Club.

Additionally, the rumours have only gone more into overdrive after Jurgen Klopp travelled to the US to celebrate his birthday weekend in Las Vegas.

So the Reds manager and a shareholder are in the US with Mbappe, whilst a major Liverpool reporter is retweeting one of the young Frenchman’s posts.

You can see why Liverpool fans have become excited, but this transfer would surely cost Liverpool a world-record fee and would be too difficult to complete.

Let’s see what lots of Liverpool fans on Twitter have been saying about Mbappe…

Nothing less than £100m: Newcastle fans respond to surprise Almiron speculation

[ad_pod ]

According to Paraguayan journalist Markos Gonzalez, who works for Tigo Sports, Real Madrid are monitoring the development of Newcastle United’s Miguel Almiron.

The 25-year-old is currently representing his country at the 2019 Copa America and has registered assists in their two matches against Qatar and Argentina.

According to Gonzalez, Real Madrid are ‘very closely’ monitoring the attacker.

Almiron joined Newcastle from MLS outfit Atlanta United in January 2019.

The South American failed to score or register an assist in his 10 appearances for the Magpies in the second half of the 2018-19 campaign.

However, he made a positive impression early on with a string of impressive performances and could be a star in the Premier League next season as he begins to settle.

It would certainly be a surprise to see Real Madrid move for the versatile attacker but stranger things have happened.

Tottenham Hotspur fans react as Dani Ceballos deal reportedly edges closer

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans are keen to see a deal completed for Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos this summer.

Spanish outlet AS reported on Friday that Spurs are closing in on a move for the player, with Mauricio Pochettino said to have helped convince the player to make a season long loan switch.

Ceballos is a rising star at the Spanish giants having made 27 appearances for the club last term.

Before Tanguy Ndombele, Spurs fans haven’t been able to vlog about a transfer since January 2018! Judging by the video below, it’s been worth the wait…

However, at a stage of his career when he needs more regular week-to-week action, AS say that Spurs can offer the 22-year-old an important role in the squad, allowing him to make more starts than he’d get in Madrid.

As you’d expect from a Spain international, his passing is crisp, penetrative and accurate, completing 92.1% of his La Liga passes last term, per WhoScored.

At the recent U21 European Championships he provided two assists, averaging 2.8 key passes per match and helping his country lift the trophy.

Spurs supporters clearly think he’s a talent, with many taking to Twitter over the weekend to share their thoughts on the potential deal…

Tottenham Hotspur fans keen on selling Kieran Trippier to Juventus for £30m

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur fans are keen on selling Kieran Trippier during this summer’s transfer window after he was linked with a move to Juventus.

The Times reported on Sunday that the full-back is a target for the Italian giants should they bite on Manchester City interest in Joao Cancelo.

The paper reckon a fee of £30m could get the deal done, although there’s no pressure on the Spurs side to sell considering the player still has three years left on his contract.

Check out the video below to find out why Arsenal fans aren’t celebrating Spurs’ UCL final defeat as much as they’d like…

Trippier is a regular pick under Mauricio Pochettino but doesn’t have the full confidence of supporters, with plenty feeling like he’s a weak link in the team that could be massively improved upon in the transfer market.

The criticism is at times harsh but a fee of £30m sounds pretty good from a Spurs perspective as Pochettino considers what his Spurs side will look like in the wake of the recent UEFA Champions League final defeat to Liverpool.

Manchester United fans react to Dani Olmo links

[ad_pod ]

Having seen their approach of signing big-name players on extortionate wages produce only a sixth-placed finish in the Premier League, Manchester United have understandably taken a different tack to the transfer market this summer.

The Red Devils have already signed Daniel James from Swansea and Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace, and according to the latest reports, the club are intent on continuing to sign younger players ahead of the new season.

Now, Sportske Novosti claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are interested in Dinamo Zagreb’s sensation Dani Olmo and that the club are willing to pay £35.7m for the 21-year-old.

West Ham look to hijack Valencia move for Gomez

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

West Ham United are attempting to hijack Valencia’s move for Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez, per ClaretandHugh.

What’s the word?

A separate ClaretandHugh report claims that the Uruguay international has been the subject of a bid from a rival La Liga club, with Valencia offering around £16m plus Santi Mina and another player on loan.

However, with Marko Arnautovic likely to leave the club this summer, after a bid from China, the Hammers are said to have re-entered the bidding, tabling an offer worth £36m in cash for the Celta forward.

Gomez has a £45m release clause in his contract and Football FanCast understands that Director of Football Mario Husillos remains in talks with Gomez’s representatives and Celta over a possible deal.

The 22-year-old is said to be keen to remain in Spain, however.

Pay the clause

There is a simple way for West Ham to get their man: Pay the £45m.

Celta told the Hammers to do this in January when they made their first approach and FFC understands that the stance hasn’t changed.

Valencia, of course, have offered players as part of the deal and the Hammers are unlikely to follow in those footsteps.

The simple way through, then, is to simply trigger the clause.

Otherwise, they face being left disappointed as they look to secure their first striker signing of the summer.
