Sheffield United: Wilder must consider summer swoop for Oliver McBurnie

What a year it has been to be a Sheffield United supporter.

After overcoming the disappointment of missing out on the play-offs last May, Chris Wilder made a number of vital additions to his squad which subsequently allowed the Blades to launch a successful bid for promotion in the 2018/19 campaign.

Despite facing tough opposition from the likes of Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion in the battle for the top-two, the South Yorkshire-based outfit managed to secure a second place finish in the Championship with one player, in particular, stepping up to the mark for his team.

By firing in 23 goals in 40 league games for the Blades, Billy Sharp provided a vital outlet for Wilder’s side as by forming a fantastic partnership with David McGoldrick, the 33-year-old was able to create history at Bramall Lane.

However, despite his recent heroics, it is clear that in order for United to thrive in the top-flight next season, they simply have to bring in some competition for Sharp this summer.

According to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, the Blades are reportedly lining up a move for Swansea City star Oliver McBurnie yet may have to fight off Brighton & Hove Albion to secure his services.

An outstanding young talent, the Scotland international helped the Jacks secure a 10th place finish in the second tier by scoring 22 goals and providing four assists for his team-mates.

Clearly capable of making the step up in level to the Premier League, McBurnie has all the ingredients needed to become a hero for United and would be the ideal long-term replacement for Sharp.

If Wilder decides to splash the cash on the £4.5m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt), it could make all the difference in the Blades’ quest to prolong their stay in the top-flight over the coming years.

What do you think United fans? Would you welcome a move for McBurnie this summer? Could he be the ideal replacement for Sharp? Let us know below.

Why does Crystal Palace’s phenomenon Aaron Wan-Bissaka remain under-rated?

[ad_pod ]

Given that we inhabit a stat-obsessed age, it makes little sense that Aaron Wan-Bissaka remains so under-rated from some quarters. The figures that have accompanied his quick rise to prominence are little short of astonishing and we will get to them very shortly. Surely though they should be praised from the rooftops, not over-looked? There is however two very different types of under-appreciation.

The most obvious example of the first kind is James Milner, whose impact and influence for the bulk of his career was taken for granted. Then there is Crystal Palace’s fantastically promising right-back who typifies the latter kind: a player whose introduction to professional football has been so immense he is immediately furnished with large quantities of hype and from that hype comes the inevitable backwash of negativity.

He is not then ‘under-rated’ in the truest sense. It’s just that some people believe quite strongly that he is over-rated.

Roy Hodgson – as you would expect from a seasoned sage of the game – was aware of the possibility of this happening all the way back in August of last year. He spoke of the need to allow the 21-year-old to continue learning his trade ‘without trying to raise him up on pedestals to then saw the legs off the pedestals when it suits’.

Are Crystal Palace right to slap a £100m valuation on Wilfried Zaha’s head? Check out the video below to see why they are…

It was a commendable sentiment but ultimately a doomed one. Because after making an immediate impact with some fine displays at the tail-end of the previous campaign, the Croydon-born defender went on to have a damn-near immaculate 2018/19.

Per Whoscored, around the midway point of the campaign, nobody had made more successful tackles than Wan-Bissaka across Europe’s top five leagues, and his success rate of 92.8% astounds. From 83 attempted take-ons he was dribbled past just six times. His imperious performances as a whole earned him four club Player of the Month awards and last month he pipped Wilfried Zaha to the Player of the Year garland.

‘Ah, but he doesn’t do much going forward,’ his critics chime, which is such an English response to focus only on the ordinary aspects of a phenomena. Even this charge, however, is not entirely fair: Wan-Bissaka provided three Premier League assists this season, a return that saw him match Kieran Trippier and better Kyle Walker’s output – two players who will surely fade from international reckoning as the Palace ace and Trent Alexander-Arnold battle for the England right-back berth. Furthermore, Wan-Bissaka started out as a winger. He has the chops.

For now though he concentrates on destruction over construction and for this role he is truly a generational talent, so it was little surprise when Manchester United reportedly showed their hand last week with a £25m bid readied.

The figure was insulting. It was derisory. That sum in today’s climate gets you a bench dweller for a top-six side who is knocking well into their late twenties. Wan-Bissaka is a superstar-in-the-making who has played like a superstar from the off.

If Palace are to sell their crown jewel, the swooping vultures will have to submit an offer which is representative of his true value.

His performances on his breakout campaign prove that could well be a figure in the region of £50 million – one which appears to be the going rate for exuberant, prodigious and homegrown talents at fellow Premier League clubs.

Transfer Focus: Clarke not going to Spurs could have knock-on effects for Leeds

[ad_pod ]

A recent report in the Yorkshire Evening Post has stated that Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to be willing to pay the £20m price tag that Leeds United have set on Jack Clarke.

This means that the winger will either stay at Elland Road or leave for a lesser fee, and this latest development could have a huge knock-on effect in terms of the Whites’ transfer business this summer.

What’s the story?

Newspapers and online sources have been rampant with speculation that the 18-year-old could be on his way to north London, but Leeds have been resilient when it comes to any potential deal for their prized asset and have stood firm on their £20m valuation.

Noel Whelan has recently claimed the Whites were overpricing their hot prospect and it seems that Daniel Levy has agreed with that sentiment as Spurs don’t want to pay such a hefty fee for an unproven quantity.

Knock-on effects

Failure to sell Clarke for £20m may have severe knock-on effects for the rest of Leeds’ transfer window.

Phil Hay has previously stated that he thinks Leeds’ transfer model will force them to sell players before thinking about new arrivals. This means that the Whites may have to swallow their pride and sell the youngster at a lower price or let another one of their players go.

There has been no shortage of interest in Kalvin Phillips with Aston Villa reportedly preparing a £14m bid, and if Leeds aren’t going to sell Clarke, then they may allow the 23-year-old to leave Elland Road so that they can make signings this summer.

If the Yorkshire club sell Clarke at a lower price, it will also affect the calibre of players that they can target, so this newest update from Spurs isn’t something Andrea Radrizzani and Victor Orta will be happy to hear.

Total madness: Liverpool fans are against Shaqiri leaving Anfield

[ad_pod ]

According to Goal.com, Liverpool would not be against selling Xherdan Shaqiri this summer if a suitable bid arrived for the Switzerland international.

It remains to be seen how busy the Reds are in this transfer window.

All things considered, it has been a very good campaign for the Merseyside giants.

And it could get even better as they prepare to face Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League final at the start of next month.

According to Goal.com, in order to fund other moves this summer, Shaqiri could be sold.

However, it would be fair to say that the Liverpool supporters are against the versatile attacker leaving Anfield ahead of the 2019-20 campaign.

Has Alisson been Liverpool’s most important signing of the season? Check out the video below to find out why Jurgen Klopp thinks so…

Shaqiri has not exactly set the world alight since arriving from Stoke City.

However, he has contributed six goals and five assists this season and is certainly a decent option off the bench.

2019/20: Five key dates that could decide Leicester’s top six fate

[ad_pod ]

The 2019/20 Premier League fixtures are finally out, and already storylines and predictions are being welded into a football season that is under two months away from starting, and for Leicester City, next term could be a massive one.

The Foxes found their mojo in the tail-end of last season with the appointment of Brendan Rodgers that saw Leicester win five of their last nine games and draw an additional two.

Talk of a top six finish is on the cards, so which five dates next season could determine whether or not Leicester yet again break from tradition and make an impact on the Premier League? Here’s the dates that will decide if Leicester can break into the top six…

17th August – Chelsea (A)

With Eden Hazard off to Real Madrid and a transfer ban all but confirmed for the west Londoners, Leicester stand a good chance of stealing a top six spot from straight under Chelsea’s noses this season, and a win away at Stamford Bridge on matchday two could set the Foxes’ ambitions in place.

9th November – Arsenal (H)

Leicester absolutely embarrassed Arsenal last season at home with a 3-0 win that easily could have been more for the hosts, and if Rodgers’ side can repeat the feat they’ll throw the Gunners’ season into jeopardy early on, something City fans will be more than happy with and something the club can take advantage of.

26th December – Liverpool (H)

Liverpool have a bone to pick with Leicester after the Foxes halted the Reds’ title challenge with a 1-1 draw in January last season, and next campaign the 2015/16 Premier League winners can easily cause another upset that could shift the foundations of the league table in what is already looking like a Boxing Day headliner.

8th February – Wolverhampton Wanderers (A)

Of all the teams outside the top six who have the potential to disrupt that exclusive group, Leicester and Wolverhampton Wanderers have the best chance, so the showdown between these two sides in February could determine which team goes further in their lofty goal of a top six finish.

29th February – Norwich City (A)

A trip to Carrow Road on the 29th February kicks off a run of six games where, on paper, Leicester have a good chance of picking up maximum points, which include welcoming Aston Villa and Brighton at the King Power as well as trips to Watford and Everton. A win against the Canaries could kickstart the late-season run to a top six finish.

Transfer Focus: Gerrard is planning for the long-term at Rangers with Rachi move

[ad_pod ]

Rangers are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur youngster Albert Rachi, according to The Evening Times.

What’s the story?

The Ibrox side aren’t messing about this summer when it comes to player recruitment having already completed deals for Jordan Jones, Jake Hastie and Steven Davis.

Just as important as those first-team deals though is making sure the club are in the market for stars of the future, and The Evening Times reckon the club have teenage prospect Rachi on their radar.

Who is he?

Rachi only joined the Spurs set up last year after graduating from the Eurostar academy, who describe the 15-year-old as a player who “has a smooth and fast playstyle” and “attacks the net with extreme speed and pace.”

Those attributes certainly sound like the kind of thing Rangers would be after and although clearly any potential move would be one to bolster our youth ranks, the fact they are paying such close attention to recruitment in the academy sides bodes very well for the future.

Check out Keith from C’mon the Hoops’ fascinating video on the origins of the Old Firm derby below…

Gerrard’s long game

It’s become clear to most observers that Steven Gerrard isn’t at Rangers to make a quick impact and disappear again, he has gradually been putting in the building blocks that cane bring success to the club long-term.

From improvements at the training ground to these latest reports targeting promising youth players, the Ibrox boss is keen on building a lasting legacy in Glasgow.

That long game view of Rangers has arguably been neglected in the past and their supporters must be hoping that it’ll all pay off on the pitch next year and beyond.

Arsenal: Unai Emery can’t risk starting Mesut Ozil in Europa League final

Today is the day that Arsenal fans have both been excited for and dreading at the same time for a while now, the Europa League final.

It is without question the club’s most important game in the past three seasons, and winning against Chelsea in Baku will set in motion a series of events that will but benefit Arsenal in the long-term. Lose, though, and the Gunners will be back to square one in their journey for a return to the Champions League.

With everyone fully fit and Unai Emery the unofficial Europa League master having won the tournament three times on the bounce with Sevilla, the odds are looking good for Arsenal, all the manager has to do know is name that perfect starting XI that will get the Gunners over the line, and that means dropping Mesut Ozil to the bench.

The German playmaker has easily had his worst ever year as an Arsenal player this season, being constantly dropped from the first-team and the squad altogether in some cases due to inconsistent performances, and on a night where the north London side simply have to win, Emery can’t risk Ozil going missing when the club needs him most.

The former Germany star who joined the club for a reported £42.4 million is no doubt one of the most talented players in the Arsenal team, but in a game as big as this where everyone has to turn up and perform, Ozil is simply too big a risk to put in the starting XI.

Arsenal fans, would you start Ozil tonight? Let us know!
