Sultans smoke Qalandars on the back of Shahnawaz Dhani's 4 for 5

Qalandars’ playoff hopes now hinge on result of Quetta Gladiators v Karachi Kings

Danyal Rasool18-Jun-2021There’s been plenty of talk about when the world will get back to normal, but Lahore Qalandars look like they’re there anyway. A vintage capitulation from a side for whom qualification to the semis once looked a mere formality means their chances for progression hang in the balance. Multan Sultans swatted them aside by 80 runs, with Sohail Akhtar’s side bowled out inside 15.1 overs for 89, which – aside from the points going to the Sultans – has produced a devastating blow to the Qalandars net run rate that they could ill afford to absorb. Shahnawaz Dhani was the architect of the huge win, taking four wickets once again in the face of listless opposition from Qalandars.Having lost three on the bounce when failing to chase down targets, Qalandars’ decision to put Sultans in first was curious, but the bowlers kept them on a leash for much of the innings. Aside from a menacing 63-run partnership between Rilee Rossouw and Sohaib Maqsood – whose 40-ball 60 was redolent of his best days as a T20 power hitter – Sultans were never truly able to pull away. And once that partnership was broken, Shaheen Afridi and James Faulkner helped Qalandars run riot, ripping through the lower-middle order to leave Quetta hovering around 140. Only a destructive – in every sense of the word – final over from Haris Rauf, from which Sohail Tanvir plundered 24, helped Sultans set Qalandars 170 to win.Given their chasing struggles in this leg of the tournament, that was always going to be an uphill task. Ben Dunk was promoted, signalling a shift in approach. But the experiment failed before Dhani, sensational once again, got some extra bounce to prise out a struggling Fakhar Zaman. Blessing Muzarabani got in on the act as Mohammad Hafeez fell thanks to a loose shot. Imran Tahir joined the party too, and aside from one big over courtesy Faulkner, the chase was never really on. When he was dismissed, the fight left the Qalandars. At this rate, the Qalandars might be leaving Abu Dhabi soon enough.Dhani delight Shahnawaz Dhani’s special relationship with the PSL shows no signs of cooling, his dizzying figures of 3.1-1-5-4 the zenith of an already glittering tournament. The signs of a remarkable day presented themselves the very first time he bowled, nailing Fakhar Zaman with a bouncer off his first ball and putting Qalandars on the back foot straightaway. When he returned in the middle overs, he got rid of the last dregs of Qalandars’ hope, extra bounce putting paid to Faulkner’s enterprising little stay. All that remained was the snuffing of the tail, and in this sort of mood, he accomplished that with disdainful ease.Harif Rauf’s 20th overIt’s easy to forget what a seemingly impregnable position Lahore found themselves in 19 overs into the match. Sultans had hobbled along to 145, and Tanvir kept the strike off the final ball of the previous over, hoping to get a few big hits in. It began with a couple of streaky fours, before a hammer blow over square leg for six saw the momentum shift ominously away from the struggling Qalandars. Assisted by supremely ordinary bowling, Tanvir – who has struggled for runs this PSL – managed another ten off the last two, wrenching the momentum back to his side. While Lahore had conceded just 26 off the five overs prior, Sultans plundered 24 more in just one. Lahore would never quite recover.Where they standLahore Qalandars are joined by Multan Sultans on ten points and both teams have one match to play. Sultans have the best net run rate in the tournament and barring a historically catastrophic loss to Islamabad United, Sultans are assured of a playoff spot. Meanwhile, Qalandars’ fate rests in the hands of Quetta Gladiators. If the last place Gladiators can beat Karachi Kings, then Qalandars will take the final playoff berth. However, a win for the Kings and they’ll move to ten points but will be in the playoffs ahead of Qalandars due to a superior net run rate.

Arteta "dreams" of signing £68m forward, he’s plotting a unique Arsenal bid

Mikel Arteta personally "dreams" of bringing a £68 million forward to Arsenal, and it is believed the Spaniard is plotting a unique bid to sign him.

It is believed Arteta is planning to use Raheem Sterling as a false-nine against Tottenham, dropping Kai Havertz back into midfield, as they also sweat on Riccardo Calafiori's fitness after the defender picked up a calf injury on international duty.

While supporters anxiously wait for official injury updates ahead of Spurs, some very good news has at least come out of the club today. Indeed, widespread reports claim Arteta has just agreed a new three-year contract with Arsenal, which will keep him at the club until 2027.

The Spaniard's current deal was set to expire at the end of this season, prompting some concern over Arteta's long-term future, but Arsenal no longer have to worry about retaining their manager as they continue to work together for the foreseeable.

Arteta is rumoured to have a big say on Arsenal transfers and regularly holds internal discussions with sporting director Edu Gaspar over whom to bring in. Now that the 42-year-old has committed his future to the club, it is believed there is one player in particular very high on his wishlist.

Arteta "dreams" of signing Inter Milan striker Marcus Thuram

According to Inter Live, Nerazzurri striker Marcus Thuram is seriously wanted by Arteta. The Frenchman has started 2024/2025 in fine form, scoring four goals over his opening three Serie A starts of the new season, following up a 23/24 campaign where he bagged 13 goals and seven assists in Serie A alone.

This form has not gone unnoticed in London, as it is claimed Arteta "dreams" of signing Thuram for Arsenal, and he is even prepared to offer striker Gabriel Jesus plus a substantial amount of money in a player-plus-cash bid.

It is unclear whether the Serie A champions would entertain such an offer, but other reports have stated that Inter value Thuram at no less than £68 million. The former Borussia Monchengladbach forward has averaged an impressive 3.7 shots at goal per 90 so far this season, and a very high match rating of 8.27 according to WhoScored.

Nottingham Forest eyeing move for £48,000-a-week forward who Van Dijk loves

Nottingham Forest are interested in signing a forward who Virgil van Dijk says "has everything", seeing him as an alternative to Santiago Gimenez.

Nottingham Forest miss out on Gimenez

The Reds have suffered a setback with one high-profile transfer target, with a move for Feyenoord striker Gimenez possibly not materialising after plenty of interest emerged in him from the Premier League side.

The Mexican looked like a hugely exciting option for Forest, considering what a key performer he was for his current club last season, scoring 23 goals in just 29 starts in the Eredivisie, as well as netting twice in four appearances in the Champions League.

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez

With Gimenez potentially no longer a target for Nuno Espirito Santo's side between now and the end of the summer transfer window this week, having rejected a switch to the City Ground, they could do with finding an alternative target.

It looks as though they may have found that player, with a new report suggesting as much, as Forest look to give themselves the best possible chance of enjoying a solid Premier League campaign.

Nottingham Forest eyeing attacker who "has everything"

According to Football Insider, Nottingham Forest are now "ready to turn their attention" to signing Ajax striker Brian Brobbey this summer, looking to acquire his signature before the window closes on Friday.

The Reds have "set their sights" on the Feyenoord ace, seeing him as an ideal option in place of Gimenez, but with his contract not expiring until 2027, the report does state that "it would take a big fee to try and prise him away from Amsterdam".

Brobbey stands out as a shrewd option for Forest in the coming days, and if they were able to entice him to the club, it could make up for the blow of missing out on the prolific Gimenez.

The Ajax ace is a top-quality player in his own right, and still only 22 years of age, scoring 49 goals and registering 19 assists for Ajax to date, as well as winning three caps for the Netherlands. His international captain Van Dijk has spoken highly about his compatriot's qualities, too, saying:

"I think he’s a great boy. He is a great talent and basically has everything. He is fast, strong and can finish well. He had said in an interview that he would score against us, but luckily, we were able to prevent that. He can be a very good weapon [for the World Cup], but it’s up to the national coach."

Forest signing Brobbey may feel like a real coup, given his international pedigree and the praise he has received from such a huge player in Van Dijk, and he scored a combined 31 league goals in the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons combined.

Better than Bellingham & Palmer? England legend Paul Gascoigne reveals he asked Three Lions' ‘best player’ for his shirt after recent appearance

England legend Paul Gascoigne has revealed which current Three Lions player he wanted to get a signed shirt off from.

Former Newcastle United star Gascoigne was asked who he believes the best player in the current England team is. Previously, Manchester United hero Wayne Rooney named Phil Foden as England's "best player" and it seems Gascoigne agrees with him. This is despite Cole Palmer and Jude Bellingham, for instance, starring for Chelsea and Real Madrid respectively.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesWHAT PAUL GASCOIGNE SAID

He told Metro: "I really like Jack Grealish, because of the fact that if he lost the ball a couple of times, he still wants the ball. He doesn’t go hiding. But I watched Phil Foden not long ago. He was s*** hot. He was unbelievable. What a player and that last England game, I couldn’t resist it. I just went into the changing room and asked Foden to give us a shirt. He signed it for my agent’s son. He’s been unbelievable at Man City and is one of the players they rely on to produce. Sometimes that’s not good for him, because he’s such a young kid as well. He’s only young and he’s got kids.

"Looking at the England squad, you’ve got Bellingham, Grealish, Rashford. They’ve got a really strong squad. But Foden, they always say people with left foot in football are always going to be brilliant. But I really like Foden, he’s quality and he’s got a good engine on him."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite the praise of Gascoigne, Foden has largely struggled to replicate his form for Manchester City in an England shirt. The 24-year-old underwhelmed during Euro 2024 and this season his form for his club has gone backwards. But his talent and ability is undeniable.

Ajaz Patel: Culture and positivity breed our success

On a high after their emphatic series win at Edgbaston on Sunday, New Zealand will now have plenty of selection headaches to deal with for the World Test Championship final against India starting June 18 in Southampton. With a combination of injuries and their decision to rest a few players, New Zealand made six changes to their playing XI for the second Test, and still showed enough depth in both batting and bowling to beat England by eight wickets. If most or all of their injured players recover, New Zealand will have numerous options for only a few spots available. How are some of their players on the fringe of a permanent spot in the playing XI coping with that competition?”I try not to put any pressure on myself,” spinner Ajaz Patel, one of the six inclusions for the second Test, said. “Faith is a big factor for me, which allows me to stay grounded and be comfortable with whatever is thrown at me. I make sure I’m still working hard, developing my game and continuing to grow so when the opportunity does come, I make the most of it.Related

“There is no added pressure, whenever I put the cap on, I look at it as a privilege. [I] try and have fun because that’s why we play cricket. It’s still reliving a childhood dream, representing New Zealand and putting that black baggy on. We take a lot of pride and privilege in that. Every time I get the opportunity, I try to put out there what I’ve been working on while I’ve been away. Sometimes you have to take a back seat, and sometimes you’re thrust in the front.”New Zealand’s incredible discipline on the field, and subsequent success, has roots in the culture that the team has bought into over the last few years.”It was probably six or seven years ago, the leadership group sat down and thought we want to play a brand of cricket that was true to us as Kiwis,” New Zealand’s stand-in captain Tom Latham said. “Something that we could hold our head on. The change came around that World Cup time in 2015. To try and enjoy cricket, enjoy each other’s company. That’s something we hold true to this group.”Patel also alluded to that culture as an influential reason in New Zealand’s recent success. “The culture around this team is very good. Everyone is quite positive, there is no negativity, and that breeds so much success we have. Everyone backs everyone, it doesn’t matter which XI is playing. Everyone has been putting in a 100% and it was from the guys that weren’t playing to the guys that were in the playing XI.”I was carrying drinks last week, there was a different group carrying drinks this week. We had a lot of seniors players carrying drinks and they still did the job for the team and I think that shows our team culture and how we go about our cricket, and what it really means to be a part of this team for everyone. There’s no ranks in here and everyone does what they need to which is a great environment to be in.”Even though the Ageas Bowl in Southampton favours spin as the match progresses, New Zealand will probably have to choose between Mitchell Santner and Patel for the WTC final. “We have some good conversations about spin, a lot of in-depth analysis and tactics that we can use while we’re out there. We have a good healthy competition but at the same time, we work well together as well. Competition is always good, we’re growing together,” he said.”I’ve done my part, my preparation. Now it’s up to the selectors. My foundation of faith allows me to be at peace with whatever happens. For me, it’s about preparing and whatever happens from there, happens from there. I wouldn’t want to be a selector right now because there are some pretty tough decisions. It has been highlighted in the last couple of games how much depth we really have.”Patel took four wickets at Edgbaston, while also performing the role of a holding spinner. He bowled eight maidens in 23 overs with an economy rate of well under three in both innings, and chipped in with the bat as well in the first innings with 20 useful runs at No. 10 which helped New Zealand in taking an 85-run lead.”I tried to make use of whatever was out there. Being able to bat, that was fun. Mark Wood bowling some serious pace, trying to take your block off isn’t the most amusing. It’s something I’ve been working on, it was nice to showcase that. But also doing a job in the second innings where conditions start favouring you a bit more.”

Australia batter Steven Smith has returned to the top of the Test batting rankings for the first time since the Boxing Day Test last year.Despite not having played a Test since January this year, Smith took over from Kane Williamson, who dropped five ranking points. Williamson scored 14 runs in the first Test against England at Lord’s before missing the second Test because of a persistent elbow injury. Williamson, now on 886 ranking points, is second in the rankings.Smith has now been at the top of the batting rankings for 167 Tests, according to an ICC statement, behind only Garry Sobers and Viv Richards, who were No. 1 for 189 and 179 Tests respectively.South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada also gained two spots to move to seventh in the bowling rankings after a five-wicket haul in the second innings against West Indies in St Lucia in the first Test. Anrich Nortje’s seven-wicket match haul carried him into the top 30 for the first time in his career, while Quinton de Kock moved to 12th in the batting rankings, a position shared with Cheteshwar Pujara, after he was named player of the match for his unbeaten 141 in Gros Islet.England’s Test captain Joe Root dropped one spot, to fifth, after the series against New Zealand in which he scored just 97 runs in four innings. Root has still been England’s most prolific run-scorer in the last year, having totalled 1115 runs at an average of 50.68, close to double the next highest run-scorer, Dom Sibley (623 runs).

Imagine him & Ramazani: Leeds pushing hard to sign exciting attacker

Leeds United return to Championship action on Saturday as they prepare to host Hull City at Elland Road a day after the summer transfer window slams shut.

When the Whites take to the field against the Tigers this weekend, Daniel Farke will know what his squad will look like, barring injuries, until January at the earliest.

That will come as a welcome relief to the German head coach because he has had to deal with so much uncertainty in the group in recent months.

The West Yorkshire outfit have cashed in on Glen Kamara, Georginio Rutter, Crysencio Summerville, and Archie Gray since the end of last season, after their involvement in last season's promotion push.

Meanwhile, Leeds have swooped to sign Largie Ramazani, Joe Rodon, Joe Rothwell, Alex Cairns, and Jayden Bogle in an attempt to bolster Farke's squad.

Yorkshire Evening Post's Graham Smyth claims that the Whites are expected to sign two more players before Friday's deadline, not including the imminent arrival of Manor Solomon on a season-long loan from Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur.

More attacking players appear to be on the agenda for the Championship side as Leeds are reportedly eyeing up a midfielder from the Bundesliga.

Leeds eyeing up Bundesliga whiz

According to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri, the Whites are pushing hard to secure a deal to sign Roland Sallai from Freiburg before the deadline.

The reporter claims that the Yorkshire-based team are looking to bring the Hungary international over to England and that the player is keen on the move, which suggests that personal terms would not be an issue.

Tavolieri adds that it would take a fee of €9m (£7.6m) to make a deal happen in the coming days. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the English side are prepared to offer that much money.

Meanwhile, Sky Sports journalist Philipp Hinz claims that there has been concrete interest from Leeds, who have made contact with the player to discuss a potential move to Elland Road.

Hinz reports, however, that there is also interest from a team in Ligue 1, which means that the Whites could face late competition to secure his services.

With the deadline coming up on Friday, the 49ers will need to act fast to ensure that they win the race for his signature to bolster Farke's attacking options for the rest of the 2024/25 campaign.

Leeds could land an exciting partner for one of their most recent signings – Largie Ramazani – by securing a deal to sign Sallai by the end of the week.

What Largie Ramazani could bring to Leeds

The Whites officially confirmed the signing of the winger from Spanish side Almeria last week, ahead of their 2-0 win over Sheffield Wednesday on Friday night.

He has joined on a permanent deal and looks set to be the club's replacement for Summerville on the left flank, as a left winger who likes to cut inside onto his favoured right foot.

Ramazani started his career at academy level with Manchester United in England, where he produced 11 goals in 18 matches for their U23 side, before his move to Almeria in 2020.

The Belgian wizard scored 22 goals in 128 appearances for the Spanish side during his four-year spell, playing in the top two divisions in Spain.

In the 2023/24 campaign, Almeria were relegated from LaLiga but that did not stop the 23-year-old wizard from showcasing his quality at the top end of the pitch.

As you can see in the table above, Ramazani contributed with 13 goals and 'big chances' created combined in just 16 starts in the Spanish top-flight.

His tally of five assists from ten 'big chances' created suggests that his teammates let him down at times with their wasteful finishing, which may have contributed to their relegation from the division.

These statistics suggest that the Belgian ace is a talented winger who can provide quality as a creative threat but he needs to work to improve his output as a goalscorer.

He could consistently create quality opportunities for the likes of Wilfried Gnonto and Mateo Joseph to find the back of the net, and could form a dangerous partnership with Sallai in West Yorkshire.

Why Leeds should sign Roland Sallai

The Whites should swoop to sign Sallai to pair him with Ramazani as part of the attacking trio behind Joseph, either as the right winger or in the number ten position.

He is a creative midfielder, who can play centrally or out wide, who could work alongside the Belgian to break down opposition teams when they drop into a low block against Leeds this season, to create chances for the finishers in the team – Joseph, Dan James, and Gnonto – to score goals.

Roland Sallai for Hungary.

Sallai offered a glimpse into his quality in the final third at the European Championship in Germany earlier this summer with an eye-catching four 'big chances' created in three appearances.

He has performed in a major European league for a number of years now in the Bundesliga and has racked up 27 goals and 23 assists in 162 matches for Freiburg, which suggests that this would be an ambitious move by Leeds as it would be a step down for him to drop to the second tier in England.

As you can see in the table above, Sallai – like Ramazani – was incredibly unfortunate last season as his teammates did not score from any of the seven 'big chances' that he created for them.

The 27-year-old star, who scored four goals in nine Europa League matches, only registered one assist from 11 'big chances' created across the Bundesliga and the Euros.

Leeds could land “exciting” signing for Joseph in late move for EFL star

The Whites are reportedly interested in signing the attacking midfielder this week.

ByDan Emery Aug 26, 2024

These statistics suggest that his impressive creativity was underused by Freiburg and Hungary and Leeds could bring him in to attempt to make the most of it, with Sallai and Ramazani hopefully using their creative skills to unlock opposition defences this season.

Mitchell Marsh's all-round brilliance and Mitchell Starc's final over earn Australia first win

Fabian Allen threatened to win the match with four late sixes but Starc kept Andre Russell quiet

Peter Della Penna14-Jul-2021

Mitchell Marsh starred with bat and ball•Getty Images

A career-best night with both bat and ball from Mitchell Marsh ensured Australia got off the mark in the series as Mitchell Starc stymied Andre Russell at the death to clinch a four-run victory over West Indies. After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Marsh propelled Australia to 189 for 6 with 75 off 44 balls, his third half-century in four innings this series. Defending the total, Marsh followed it up with 3 for 24 including a prized trio of scalps – Chris Gayle, Lendl Simmons and stand-in captain Nicholas Pooran – to stunt momentum in the West Indies chase.Needing 11 off the final over and with Russell on strike, after Riley Meredith had been taken for four sixes by Fabian Allen in the 19th, Starc came around the stumps and bowled four leg stump yorkers that Russell could not get under to elevate and – with only the tail left in at the non-striker’s end – resulted in turned down singles on each occasion. On the fifth ball, Russell flubbed a knee-high full toss well short of the rope at deep midwicket before a boundary on the final ball made a cosmetic adjustment to the final margin. It also meant Pooran’s perfect record as captain to start the series was no more.Marsh continues hot batting formOne of the few bright lights in this series for the visitors, Marsh has continued to impress in his audition for the No. 3 role ahead of the T20 World Cup later this year. Entering in the second over after the fall of Matthew Wade, Marsh lit up the scoreboard with a Vine-esque loop of inside out lofted drives over extra cover. He brought up his third half-century of the series off just 24 balls with another such shot for six off Allen in the ninth over. Having dominated the early stages of his century partnership with Aaron Finch, who had been missed on 2 when an edge went between keeper and slip, rain disrupted Marsh’s momentum when the players were taken off the field shortly after Marsh’s half-century at the end of the ninth over. When play resumed, Finch seized control of the stand to clatter five boundaries in the space of nine balls across the 10th and 11th overs to bring up his own 34-ball half-century, ending a run of bad form in the first three matches of the series.Watch cricket on ESPN+

Hayden Walsh Jr sparks fightback with the ballBy the time the innings finished, the Hayden Walsh Jr’s series-leading wicket tally stood at 11 after adding another three to bring them back into the game. He dismissed Finch with a googly to break the Marsh partnership at 114 after the Australia captain missed a heave across the line. Walsh Jr put himself on a hat-trick when he took a straightforward return catch next ball after Alex Carey played through too early on a leg stump half-volley to produce a leading edge back to the bowler. He rounded off his haul a few overs later with perhaps his best work of the night. Finding some turn with the legbreak, Ashton Turner overstretched prodding forward and Pooran made up for a sloppy fumble on a straightforward stumping two nights earlier to complete a sharp dismissal on this occasion.Marsh’s bowling best thwarts West Indies victory chargeSimmons got the chase off to a fiery reply alongside Evin Lewis as the pair added 62 off the first 28 balls. Simmons got momentum moving in the second over off Meredith with a six and two fours through the leg side before Lewis had yet to face a ball. Lewis joined the party in the fourth over against Dan Christian by thumping two fours followed by two sixes over mid-on and backward square. After Lewis fell to an ambitious shot backing away to Adam Zampa in the fifth, Simmons continued his supreme touch, shuffling across his stumps to flick a pair of boundaries over fine leg off the medium pace of Meredith in the seventh over. A single to start the eighth brought up a 28-ball half-century before Marsh struck for the first time, inducing a catch from Gayle to long-on.Simmons was still humming but Andre Fletcher and Pooran stuttered after arriving in the middle overs. After Zampa bowled Fletcher in the 11th, Marsh returned for a double-strike in a magnificent 16th over in which he conceded just one run. He removed Pooran for 16, caught skying to long-off, before Simmons pulled the next ball flat to Moises Henriques for a sterling catch sliding along the rope at deep midwicket for 72.Marsh’s work with bat and ball on the night looked like it might go to waste at the end of the 19th when Allen smoked four sixes off the penultimate over bowled by Meredith. But Meredith struck back on the final ball getting Allen to edge a wide delivery behind leaving 11 for Russell to get off Starc in the last. In the end, vintage yorker accuracy from Starc allowed the visitors to prevail.
