Shocking £50k-p/w Leeds Man Slammed

YouTuber Conor McGilligan has slammed Leeds United defender Pascal Struijk after he gave away a penalty in the club's recent defeat.

What's the latest on Pascal Struijk and Leeds?

Arriving to replace Javi Gracia with just four Premier League games left to save the Whites from relegation, new manager Sam Allardyce was unable to win on the weekend.

In fairness, three points were never really expected for Leeds as they came up against league leaders Manchester City at the Etihad.

At least, then, they kept the scoreline respectable as a brace from Ilkay Gundogan – who later missed a penalty – was enough to see the home team win 2-1, with Rodrigo later netting a consolation.

Ahead of the match, Allardyce opted to leave Struijk out of the starting lineup and only brought him on for the final ten minutes.

However, seeing as the £50k-p/w defender gave away a penalty just three minutes after coming on, it's easy to see why some were critical of his cameo.

For instance, while speaking on the One Leeds Fan Channel, McGilligan tore into the left-back, outlining just how exasperated he immediately became.

He said (26:05): “I nearly threw something at the TV when Pascal Struijk came on. Gave possession away three times, then gave a penalty as well.

"He's not having a good run of it at the minute…"

How bad was Pascal Struijk against Man City?

This was actually Struijk's first appearance for Leeds after spending the last three games on the bench and you can see why he hasn't been playing much.

For instance, when you look at the stats on SofaScore, he delivered the lowest match rating of 5.6 despite only playing for ten minutes. In that period, he lost the ball three times and had away that penalty, even though he only had five touches – completing 1/4 attempted passes.

Evidently, this was a nightmare cameo and in the player ratings for the Yorkshire Evening Post, journalist Graham Smyth was pretty damning of the defender too as he handed him a 3/10.

He also wrote: "Gave away a penalty, lacked composure on the ball, looked a bit shaky."

It was hardly the sort of substitute appearance that will have Allardyce considering a change in the lineup next time out and so if Struijk is to play his part in Leeds' survival over the coming weeks, he'll probably have to do so now from the bench.

Man Utd Move For £12m Ace Is Off The Table

Manchester United will not look to bring in Wout Weghorst from Burnley on a long-term basis following his short-term loan deal at Old Trafford, according to journalist Pete O'Rourke.

What's the latest transfer news involving Wout Weghorst?

As per Lancs Live, Burnley manager Vincent Kompany has detailed that he will hold discussions with Weghorst over his future at Turf Moor at the end of this term.

Kompany said: “It’s a little bit difficult to have any discussions at all at the moment because we’re all in the cutting edge moments of the season. You think that those conversations could happen sooner, but in reality it’s difficult because you’re so focused on getting over the line with your goals.

“He has his goals, he wants United to be in the Champions League and he wants to win the FA Cup if possible. We have our own goals, we still want to get the trophy over the line, but the moments will happen and I’m looking forward to having that conversation.”

Football Insider have claimed that Manchester United have already decided that they won't be taking up the opportunity to sign Weghorst in the summer, with the Red Devils set to target an elite centre-forward in the forthcoming transfer window.

Weghorst was brought to Old Trafford on a loan basis from Burnley in January, in a deal that saw his temporary stay on loan at Besiktas terminated to facilitate the move.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist O'Rourke doesn't think that Manchester United will be willing to sign Weghorst on a permanent deal from Burnley.

O'Rourke said: "I think Manchester United aren't planning on signing Wout Weghorst on a permanent basis. It was a stop-gap move late in the last January transfer window just to fill the void following Cristiano Ronaldo's departure.

"He's come in and done a decent job, but he hasn't scored enough goals. If he'd had scored more goals and maybe played better, there might have been a better chance of the deal becoming permanent."

Should Manchester United look to sign Wout Weghorst on a permanent deal?

By all means, Weghorst, who is "admired" by Ten Hag, has done a decent job leading the line for the Red Devils and has given Erik Ten Hag another option in attack; however, it looks unlikely that he will stay at Manchester United on a permanent basis.

Since arriving at Old Trafford, the Netherlands international has made 25 appearances in all competitions, registering two goals and three assists, as per Transfermarkt.

Wout Weghorst could be the striker Everton turn to.

Despite his lack of goals, Weghorst has been an industrious presence in the Manchester United frontline, as per FBRef, ranking in the top 2% of forwards in Europe's top five divisions for making blocks, with an average of 1.34 per match per 90 minutes across the last 365 days.

Nevertheless, it looks as if Weghorst's stay at Manchester United may be short and sweet as Ten Hag looks to recruit a world-class striker ahead of 2023/24.

VAR Misses Possible Red Card In Man City Win Over Everton

Referee Anthony Taylor and his VAR team may have made a big mistake in the recent Everton defeat as they failed to send off Aymeric Laporte.

What’s the latest on VAR and Everton?

It was a near-perfect weekend in the Premier League for Manchester City and co as they extended their lead at the top of the table with a win.

Not only that, but with title rivals Arsenal losing 3-0 at home to Brighton and Hove Albion, it looks as though the division will be won by City once again.

Sadly, at the other end of the table, it was a miserable afternoon for the Toffees.

Their loss at Goodison Park came largely thanks to a moment of brilliance from Ilkay Gundogan which was swiftly followed by the inevitable Erling Haaland goal, before the German then made it 3-0 later on with a sumptuous free kick.

However, when the score was still 0-0, the Cityzens can perhaps count themselves a bit fortunate that Laporte wasn’t set off.

Indeed, as you can see in this footage, the defender clearly lashes out towards Everton defender Yerry Mina.

Did Laporte punch Yerry Mina?

Perhaps Laporte is saved by the fact that Mina makes an absolute meal out of the situation and so it looks as though he’s exaggerating the whole incident.

However, the fact is, the Man City centre-back clenches a fist and strikes the opposition player on the arm.

After all, as per the official FA Rules, it is violent conduct and therefore a red card when a player “attempts to use excessive force or brutality against an opponent when not challenging for the ball, or against a team-mate, team official, match official, spectator or any other person, regardless of whether contact is made.”

And so, some may argue that Laporte doesn’t make a whole lot of contract with Mina, but the rules say that isn’t relevant and as he clenches his fist and lashes out, it certainly seems as though he had attempted to use “excessive force”.

Remarkably, however – despite journalist Patrick Boyland noting on Twitter: “Mina down after contact from Laporte. VAR has to look at this surely…” – the incident was not reviewed and so the officials really seemed to drop the ball here.

Man City reporter for The Athletic Sam Lee certainly seemed to be less than impressed by the moment of madness, as he simply wrote: “Laporte mate.”

All in all, it seems the Spain international got away with one here. Who knows, had he been sent off, perhaps Everton would have got something from the game, breathing life into the relegation battle and disrupting the title race too

Warner out of tri-series with broken finger

David Warner’s recovery time could be anywhere between two and six weeks if he does not require surgery, but he may be out for longer should a procedure be required

Daniel Brettig12-Jun-2016David Warner has been effectively ruled out out of the triangular series and may require surgery for a broken left index finger suffered while fielding during Australia’s victory over South Africa in St Kitts on Saturday. In a grievous blow to Steven Smith’s side, Warner will be lost to the top order for the remainder of the tournament and is now in a race to be fully fit in time for the start of the Test tour to Sri Lanka in July. He had made an unbeaten half-century and a century in three innings of the triangular series so far, following a successful IPL.Australia’s team doctor Geoffrey Verrall said Warner’s recovery time could be anywhere between two and six weeks if he does not require surgery, but he may be out for longer should a procedure be required.”The x-ray showed an intra-articular fracture of the distal phalanx of the index finger of the left hand – the top part of that finger,” Verrall said. “We will assess the situation over the coming days to see if the injury requires a surgical option but should that not be the case then David is likely to be available to return to play in somewhere between two and six weeks.”The selector on duty Trevor Hohns and interim coach Justin Langer are yet to decide whether Warner will be replaced by another player flown in from Australia or elsewhere. Warner said the injury would provide him with an opportunity for downtime ahead of a demanding international schedule over the next 12 months.”It’s obviously disappointing to be sidelined given the form I’ve been in and given the important stage the tri-series is at, but it’s always important to look at the positives,” he said. “This downtime, however long or short it is, will give me the chance to freshen up and spend quality time with my family after an intense period of action.”Langer said he was particularly disappointed to lose Warner’s services after watching the example he had set around the squad. “It’s doubly disappointing to have David Warner sidelined because of his outstanding form plus his attitude and professionalism around the group which has been a joy to work with,” he said. “But we’ve spoken from day one of this tour about every single person in the squad contributing to our success.”I’ve encouraged the players not in the starting eleven to be ready at all times because you never know when opportunities might come. One of the boys will now get that opportunity in David’s absence.”Australia’s captain, Steven Smith, said that while it would be a blow for Australia to miss Warner during the tri-series, the main goal would be to ensure Warner was available for the first Test against Sri Lanka, which begins in Pallekele on July 26.”The most important thing from my aspect is that he’s right for the Test series,” Smith said. “That’s still about six weeks away before the first Test. I think the medical staff and Davey are confident that he’ll be fine for that first Test match.”It’s always tough missing players like Davey, particularly at the moment. He’s in the form of his life and batting beautifully. It’s going to be a big loss for us. I’m sure whoever steps into that position is going to do a terrific job.”Warner’s injury may mean a recall for Glenn Maxwell, following the allrounder’s poor displays in the opening two matches of the tournament. Usman Khawaja is likely to move up the order to partner Aaron Finch for Monday’s match against the West Indies.

Chelsea In The Race To Sign £50k-A-Week Midfielder

Chelsea are one of numerous Premier League clubs interested in signing Fulham midfielder Joao Palhinha this summer, according to a new transfer report.

How good has Palhinha been this season?

The 27-year-old has arguably been one of the standout midfielders in the league so far this season, catching the eye with his off-the-ball ability. In fact, no player in the entire division has won more tackles than him in 2022/23 to date, with a tally of 129 coming his way.

Palhinha has been a big reason for Fulham's success, with relegation never looking likely despite pre-season prediction suggesting otherwise, and the west Londoners will be desperate to keep hold of him at the end of the season. His current deal expires in the summer of 2027, so it is likely that only a sizeable fee will be able to prise him away once the summer window arrives.

Midfield is an area of the pitch that Chelsea will be only looking for reinforcements in moving forward, and it looks as though the £50,000-a-week Portuguese is a potential option to come in.

Fulham's Joao Palhinha

Are Chelsea in the mix to sign Palhinha?

According to Football Insider, Chelsea are one of many teams who are "interested" in signing Palhinha this summer, although it clearly won't be easy for them to get their man. Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich are also reportedly in the mix, while Aston Villa are also confident of being able to compete financially with those clubs.

It is stated that Fulham are "resigned to losing" the Portugal international once this season reaches its conclusion, "given the mass amount of interest in his signature".

Palhinha could be exactly what Chelsea are looking for in the middle of the park moving forward, possessing the ability to cover ground, bite into tackles and generally help them dominate games. With N'Golo Kante's future up in the air and Mateo Kovacic turning 29 earlier this week, bringing in fresh blood is essential, and the Fulham man could be an ideal partner for Enzo Fernandez, possessing more physicality than the Argentina World Cup winner.

There are very few things working against the move, although the Blues' lack of European football next season could certainly be an issue, with others reportedly keen on him being able to promise him Champions League next season, which can often be a massive lure for players.

Palhinha has been lauded by Jamie Redknapp for having a "real presence about him" and for being a "fantastic" signing by the Cottagers, and Chelsea signing him could be a masterstroke.

Manou signed up to develop youth

Australia have begun preparing for life after the sage influence of Rod Marsh and Greg Chappell by recruiting former Test wicketkeeper Graham Manou as the national Under-15-19 High Performance pathway manager.Manou, who has been working with the Australian Cricketers Association (ACA) since 2013, will leave his role as cricket operations and membership manager late next month to oversee youth development and talent identification at Cricket Australia (CA).Having also served as captain of South Australia during his playing days, Manou was a key man for the players’ union. He made pre-tour security visits overseas while also sparring with the CA team performance manager Pat Howard over numerous issues such as the recent agreement over women’s pay and conditions.Whatever their differences of opinion, Howard and Manou worked closely together. The arrival of Kevin Roberts as executive general manager of strategy and people – after he resigned from the CA Board last year – saw the ex-gloveman come into calculations for the talent management and selection areas.”While it was a very difficult decision for me to leave the ACA, I’m very excited about the opportunity to influence the next generation of cricketers and assist in further enhancing a clear and inspiring pathway,” Manou said. “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the ACA and wish the Executive and the team at the ACA all the best for the future.”The 2011 Argus review called for succession planning in areas beyond the national team itself, and Manou’s appointment is a clear sign that Roberts and Howard are aware that national talent manager Chappell, 67, and national selector Marsh, 68, cannot carry on in their roles indefinitely. While there is no pressure on either man – both highly respected figures in the global game – to retire, Manou’s arrival will afford the chance to broaden the base of candidates for more senior roles. He will also add useful cricket experience to CA, as the organisation seeks a balance between commercial clout and knowledge of the game.Apart from the national coach Darren Lehmann, Trevor Hohns previously served as selection chairman from 1996 to 2006 and could do so again, while Mark Waugh has been on the panel since May 2014. It is believed that CA wish to take a more analytical approach to selection of the Twenty20 team in particular, after disappointing showings at the two most recent ICC events. Australia are ranked No. 1 in Tests and ODIs.”This is a terrific opportunity for Graham and his family, so whilst we are sad to see him go, we can certainly appreciate that these roles don’t come along every day,” the ACA Chief Executive Alistair Nicholson said. “Graham is regarded very highly at the ACA and has built fantastic relationships with the Executive, staff and of course the players in his three and a half years with us. His integrity and commitment to the players is of the highest order and we wish him well in this next challenge.”There has been considerable crossover between the ACA and CA in recent years, notably the choice of the former president Lehmann as national team coach and his successor Michael Kasprowicz joining the CA Board before being named interim chief executive of Queensland Cricket.Manou’s departure will leave a gulf of cricket experience at the ACA, though Simon Katich has agreed to work in a part-time role on player liaison matters. Jodie Fields and Brendan Drew will maintain their roles in working with the ACA membership.

Ex Reveals Big Ownership Update Out Of West Ham

Insider ExWHUEmployee has revealed that it is unlikely that West Ham United will have a change in ownership any time soon with David Sullivan not intending to sell.

What are the latest West Ham takeover rumours?

There seems to be a bit of an air of uncertainty around the long-term future of the club with regard to ownership. After all, Czech businessman Daniel Kretinsky completed his purchase of 27 per cent of club shares only back in 2021 and did actually agree upon an option for a full takeover of West Ham when making that deal. Only adding more doubt to all the speculation, co-owner David Gold sadly passed at the start of the year.

What's more, as per Daily Mail, if a sale was to go through this summer, the owners wouldn't have to give any of their profits – 20 per cent to be exact – to London Stadium landlords the LLDC due to a clause expiring.

It was felt that after this 10-year deadline passed, Sullivan would potentially look to sell up to a figure like Kretinsky but in a new update it sounds as though this isn't the plan for the time being.

Indeed, in the latest update on the whole situation, Ex has stated that after talking to sources over the last week, he can confirm that there is no intention to sell in "the foreseeable future".

Speaking on The West Ham Way podcast, he said (10:09): “There was always talks that come 2023, April time, the club would be sold and that there'd be an investor from abroad to take over the club.

"When I inquired about this, in the last week or so, I was told very much so that the current chairman wants to keep the club for the foreseeable future. So I don't think there's any takeover imminent at this point.

"But that said, you know, things can happen. But at the moment, there's nothing on the near horizon.”

What Premier League teams are up for sale?

A number of Premier League clubs seem to be linked with possible takeovers right now. Of course, Manchester United are the ones with the most attention in the media but Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have also been named as clubs potentially up for sale in recent months.

For the time being though, it seems as though West Ham can be taken off that list. To be fair, with a Europa League semi-final on the horizon and the threat of relegation still a possible issue, maybe it's not the worst thing in the world to avoid this off-field distraction with key football games still to be played.

Chelsea Could Move For "Magnificent" £25m Star

Chelsea are set for a bidding war with Premier League rivals Liverpool over AS Monaco midfielder Youssouf Fofana, according to a recent report from The Daily Star.

Which midfielders could Chelsea sign this summer?

Chelsea are one of a number of Premier League clubs in the race to sign Fulham's Joao Palhinha this summer, with Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur also said to be interested in the central midfielder.

The need to bring in some new options in the engine room has been increased amid the uncertainty around Mason Mount's future, and the Blues could also look at signing Sporting CP's Manuel Ugarte, who are they in a good position to win the race for.

Manager-elect Mauricio Pochettino has set his sights on signing Barcelona starlet Gavi, although the youngster does not want to leave the La Liga club, which means it will not be easy for Todd Boehly to orchestrate a deal.

According to a report from The Daily Star, Chelsea are now set to battle Liverpool for the signature of Fofana, and he could be available for a bargain fee, with the report detailing Monaco would be willing to sanction his departure for £25m.

Both clubs see the Monaco star as a low-cost alternative to Declan Rice and Moises Caicedo, who could cost around £100m in the summer, although his price could be driven up if a bidding war breaks out.

The Blues are also searching for a long-term replacement for N'Golo Kante, as they have grown concerned about the amount of injuries the Frenchman picks up, and want to bring in a similar type of midfielder.

Should Chelsea sign Fofana?

Given that Rice has expressed his desire to play in the Champions League, Chelsea are unlikely to win the race for the West Ham captain, and Fofana could be a quality alternative.

Hailed as "magnificent" by football scout Jacek Kulig, the 24-year-old has been absolutely vital for Monaco this season, making a total of 32 appearances in Ligue 1.

France'sYoussoufFofanain action with Tunisia's Montassar Talbi

During that time, the Paris-born midfielder has averaged 2.2 tackles and 1.5 interceptions per game, the third-highest combined figure in the squad.

Although Fofana is not on the same level as Rice, ranking lower than the Englishman on a number of key defensive metrics per 90 over the past year, he is also a fraction of the price, and could be an excellent addition to the Chelsea midfield.

Rabada challenges Cook but Essex on top

ECB Reporters Network03-Jul-2016
ScorecardKagiso Rabada’s bowling livened up the final session•Getty ImagesAlastair Cook fell to the last ball of the day at Chelmsford sun after an intriguing duel in the sun with the South African paceman Kagiso Rabada. The England captain had reached 49 off 93 balls when a yorker by Rabada off the fifth ball of the last over trapped him lbwIt was a disappointing end to a day in which Essex had been in full control of the top of Division Two clash from the start. It had not been plain sailing before that, either. Rabada had Cook nervously dancing around in his crease at the start in the face of some serious pace and the awkward bounce that had helped the Essex bowlers so much earlier in the day. This was Rabada’s first red-ball outing since he took 13 wickets against England at Centurion in the fourth Test. The England captain was not one of his victims then, but he had been out twice to him in the second Test.Cook and Nick Browne saw off Rabada’s fierce opening spell, even if they had only reached 20 off 11 overs. Rabada rested after six overs, which had gone for just nine runs, before returning near the close after a 10-over break.Cook freed up with Rabada out of the attack, caressing the first four of his innings through the covers off Mitch Claydon. He repeated the punishment a couple of overs later as Claydon went for three fours through the off-side, one square, another through 45 degrees and the third through the covers.Browne was the first to go, getting to the ball late and spooning Rabada to Sam Northeast at mid-on for an 84-ball 33.Essex had taken advantage of a contested toss and put Kent in on a green wicket, and one on which there was swing through most of the first two sessions and some erratic bounce.Only Alex Blake, with an unbeaten 89, his highest Championship score of the season, showed much resistance to the Essex seamers. Led by Jamie Porter’s 3 for 51, Essex had reduced Kent to 48 for 4 when Blake arrived at the wicket mid-morning.His stay of 116 balls included 13 fours and he dominated a seventh-wicket stand of 56 with Callum Jackson that helped Kent post a larger total than looked likely at one stage.Kent’s wickets fell evenly between the morning and afternoon sessions with the visitors going to lunch at 88 for 5.Fabian Cowdrey was first to go when Graham Napier sent his leg-stump cartwheeling with an inswinger. Joe Denly and Sean Dickson survived some close calls before they departed within four balls, both to catches behind by James Foster off Ravi Bopara and Porter respectively.Kent captain Northeast became Foster’s third victim soon after when he wafted outside off stump to Matt Quinn and Darren Stevens was trapped lbw by Bopara.Adam Ball went soon after lunch, but not before he had been dropped at third slip by Nick Browne and had a visit by the physio to treat a hand injury. That was clearly on his mind as he tried to fend off a lifter from Porter and the ball spiralled to Jaik Mickleburgh at gully. That brought together Blake and Jackson to steady the innings. Blake reached his half-century off 72 balls with his 10th four.Jackson, making his Championship debut in the absence of Sam Billings, who is on England duty, was happy to play the junior role. He was eventually out for 19 when he tried to push Ryan ten Doeschate through the covers, missed and was trapped lbw.The last three wickets added another 50 runs to take Kent past the 200 mark. James Tredwell lost his middle-stump to become Porter’s third wicket, Rabada was bowled by Dan Lawrence and Claydon dollied one up to Mickleburgh in the gully off Napier.
