‘Will try to create a platform for our bowlers’ – Faulkner

ScorecardFifties from James Faulkner and Peter Forrest helped Australia A put up 7 for 288 on the opening day of the second four-day game against India A in Brisbane. The pair put on 133 runs for the fourth wicket but on either side of the partnership, Australia A lost wickets in clusters to Umesh Yadav and Amit Mishra.Mishra, who replaced Pragyan Ojha, was the most successful bowler with four wickets, but he was also the most expensive. Three of his wickets came towards the end of the day. He dismissed Faulkner six runs short of a maiden first-class century after the batsman had hit him for four sixes in the 71st over. In his next four overs, Mishra removed the two batsmen who had rescued Australia A in the first four-day game – Mitchell Marsh was caught at slip for 14 trying to slash, while Sam Whiteman was bowled for 12.File photo – Amit Mishra was expensive but took key wickets towards the end of the day•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Apart from the knocks by Forrest and Faulkner, the other Australia A batsmen had little to show for, as they failed to build on starts. Australia A won the toss and batted first, but their opening stand was broken in the eighth over when Phillip Hughes was caught behind off Yadav. The fast bowler then accounted for Alex Doolan, who made a 64-ball 18. Chris Lynn’s wicket in the last over before lunch left Australia A on a shaky 3 for 64 but Faulkner and Forrest steadied the innings in the second session and gradually accumulated runs. Faulkner was the first to switch gears, getting to an 80-ball 50 with nine fours, while Forrest reached his fifty a few overs later.Faulkner pushed the scoring-rate after Forrest fell and attacked Mishra. The fifth-wicket partnership between Faulkner and Marsh yielded 51 of which Marsh contributed just 12. Mishra’s late strikes, however, left the onus of a fightback on Australia A’s lower order, comprising Ben Cutting, Cameron Boyce, Nathan Lyon and Chadd Sayers. Lyon, who had joined the Australia A squad earlier this week, replaced Moises Henriques in the XI.India A also made changes. Apart from Mishra’s inclusion, B Aparajith replaced Karun Nair in the batting line-up while fast bowler Anureet Singh came in for Dhawal Kulkarni.

Ageless Sidebottom warms to his task

Ryan Sidebottom may be 36 and by the end of a steamy second day at North Marine Road he was feeling all of those years after bowling 17 overs in strength-sapping conditions

Jon Culley at North Marine Road20-Jul-2014
ScorecardNo sign of slowing down: Ryan Sidebottom ran through Yorkshire, either side of one major stand•Getty ImagesRyan Sidebottom may be 36 and by the end of a steamy second day at North Marine Road he was feeling all of those years after bowling 17 overs in strength-sapping conditions, but he had also demonstrated his enduring class with a masterful display of left-arm swing bowling that ultimately regained the initiative for Yorkshire on a day of oscillating fortunes. He finished with 7 for 44, his best figures since he took a career-best 7 for 37 against Somerset at Headingley in 2011. The holiday crowd of around 2,800 were willing him to claim an eighth and were baffled as Andrew Gale, the Yorkshire captain, took him off after Tim Murtagh had become his fourth victim in the space of 30 deliveries in a superb third spell of the day.By then, well into the final session, the temperature was probably higher than it had been all day and Sidebottom looked visibly shattered as he wandered down to fine leg. In the words of Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s director of cricket, he was, quite simply, “shot”.What he had done to leave himself craving an ice bath perhaps as never before had been invaluable, ensuring that the partnership between John Simpson and Dawid Malan that rescued Middlesex from a calamitous start did not become the basis for a first-innings advantage in a match Yorkshire dearly want to win in order that the hiatus in the Championship programme that follows this week’s games ends with them in front, rather than Nottinghamshire. In reply to Yorkshire’s 253, Simpson and Malan added 168 for the fifth wicket, transforming their side’s position after an awful start that saw them in disarray at 11 for 4 and fortunate not to be 11 for 5, Malan getting a life on 7.This was largely down to Sidebottom, whose willingness to push himself seems never to diminish, particularly when there is something in the conditions that he can exploit. That had been clear enough when Middlesex took the second new ball five overs into the morning session, delayed by 30 minutes because of overnight rain. It prompted the last four Yorkshire wickets to fall in the space of six overs, two of them taken by Steven Finn, who finished with 4 for 81 for a season’s tally of 44.Let loose on the Middlesex top order for three overs before lunch, Sidebottom delivered the first instalment in his masterclass with a classic dismissal of the left-handed Chris Rogers, caught behind without scoring as the ball, bowled full, drew the batsman to defend but swung away to take the edge, Jonny Bairstow taking the catch.Steve Patterson, interestingly introduced for one over before lunch after Jack Brooks had begun with two overs bowled largely short at the Trafalgar Square End, struck the second blow when Nick Gubbins was leg before. Two down for four at the interval, Sidebottom took up where he had left off as the afternoon began by dismissing Eoin Morgan, who also failed to score, in almost identical fashion to Rogers. Seven for 3 became 11 for 4 as Paul Stirling became victim number three for the maestro, deflecting a catch to third slip, where Kane Williamson took it well low down. But it should have been 11 for 4 the over before, which contained the moment that would have changed the course of the day had it gone in Yorkshire’s favour, rather than against. Brooks, back on at the Trafalgar Square End, had Malan nibbling outside off stump and was about to set off on his looping celebratory run as Bairstow moved to his right to take the catch. But it was grounded.Had it stuck, then maybe Stirling’s dismissal would have made it 11 for 5, a position, you would have thought, that might have been beyond Middlesex’s redemption. As it was, some of Yorkshire’s momentum disappeared as the afternoon unfolded, and Malan, with Simpson settling after almost playing on with an inside edge off Brooks that went for four, began to play in the manner that had brought him centuries in each of his last two Championship matches. It took Yorkshire another 43 overs, into the evening session, to take another wicket, although when it came it marked the start of another brilliant spell from Sidebottom, who at last had Malan caught at second slip for 78.In the space of 30 more deliveries he had taken three more, trapping Ollie Rayner leg before with an inswinger, and having Toby Roland-Jones and Tim Murtagh caught by Lyth again at second slip – the latter parried first by third slip – either side of a splendid throw from Adil Rashid at cover to enable Bairstow to run out Simpson, whose fine innings contained 17 fours and a six and was as important to Middlesex as Lyth’s had been for Yorkshire.Yorkshire did not benefit from Lyth’s 117 as much as they might have, losing their last seven wickets for 49 runs. Lyth perished for only 9 second time around, but Yorkshire have a lead they can build on.

Smith retraces steps to keep Leicester in touch

Greg Smith successfully re-traced past footsteps as Leicestershire continued to make life difficult for Worcestershire despite Saeed Ajmal’s four wickets for the Division Two leaders at New Road.Six years after scoring 150 for England against New Zealand in an Under-19 international on this ground, Smith, the 25-year-old opener, continued his recent upturn in form with a fluent 85 which helped his county close in on the home team’s total of 321.But all along there was the spectre of Ajmal. In his last appearance before leaving for Pakistan’s short tour of Sri Lanka, he reached 60 wickets in nine matches as Leicestershire eventually folded for 280 in a mirror image of Worcestershire’s collapse from an opening stand of 163.The visitors looked to be cruising at 194 for 2 but then lost eight wickets for 86 – the last three in 11 balls from Joe Leach – as Worcestershire claimed maximum bowling points for the 23rd match in a row. With the pitch increasingly favouring bowlers, there was still time for another twist late in the day. Nathan Buck fired out Daryl Mitchell and Tom Fell – both century-makers at Grace Road last month – in five balls, leaving the promotion contenders on 48 for 2 at the close, a lead of 89.Earlier Smith’s second half-century in a week – with significant support from Ned Eckersley, 48, and Dan Redfern, with 57 – disturbed Worcestershire’s tried-and-trusted strategy. For much the of the season, the seamers had taken wickets before Ajmal got to work, but this time Jack Shantry’s lbw dismissal of Angus Robson was the solitary success with the new ball.Smith imposed himself with his impressive driving against the quicker bowlers, and with Eckersley carrying on from three centuries in three innings against Worcestershire last year, Leicestershire created a base from which to hold off Ajmal. The second-wicket pair picked off a high proportion of boundaries until the spin master made his breakthrough with a ball that kept horribly low. With Eckersley back rather than forward, he was bowled after a stand of 91.Even then Leicestershire were able to kick on again with a flow of crisply struck strokes from Redfern, but the warning signs were flashing again when Smith, after hitting 13 fours, edged Ajmal low to Tom Kohler-Cadmore at second slip.It was the last 20 minutes before tea that saw Leicestershire truly knocked off course. Having trimmed their deficit to 103, they lost successive wickets to the seamers, crucially when Redfern was lbw to Shantry and perhaps wastefully when Niall O’Brien pulled Charlie Morris for six but flailed at the next ball and found Daryl Mitchell at slip.Ajmal then struck either side of the interval. Rob Taylor was out fifth ball, pushing to Alexei Kervezee at silly point, and Josh Cobb, after playing well for 30, was lbw to one that turned but it was Leach who cleaned up the tail at the cost of one boundary by Buck.”We were in a good position to take a lead,” Ben Smith, Leicestershire’s senior coach, said. “Looking back over the innings, I think the three wickets before tea was the period where it just fell away from us.”Then when you have a world-class performer at one end, building pressure to get bowlers wickets at the other end, it’s very difficult to try and pull away.”I don’t think we’ve given our wickets away. We may have got a little bit lax against the seamers but that’s the pressure he builds.”

'Trinidad hundred gave me confidence' – Brathwaite

West Indies opener Kraigg Brathwaite has said his match-winning century in Trinidad had given him self-belief, and that it was the catalyst for his current vein of good form.On a rain-interrupted day in Barbados, where only 33.2 overs of play were possible, Brathwaite scored a resolute fifty to lift the hosts from 32 for 0 to 169 for 2 and in the process he became the first West Indies player to collect 200 runs in the series, despite not playing the first Test in Kingston.”I am trying to build on my foundation,” Brathwaite said. “The hundred in Trinidad gave me a lot of confidence and I’m looking to move forward and cement a spot in the team at the top of the order. I try to give 100% every time.”I told myself to be positive and look to play my strokes. It is a matter of control and looking to hit the bad ball. I won’t say I have become more attacking, it’s just that I’m more confident. However, I don’t want to get too comfortable and lose focus on my goal, which is to make big scores for the West Indies.”Brathwaite, who had not hit a Test hundred before his effort at Queen’s Park Oval, was composed throughout his 116-ball stay at the crease on Friday and frustrated the New Zealand bowlers with a number of well-timed drives that raced to the boundary. He was quick to credit his opening partner Chris Gayle for laying the groundwork of their 79-run stand, which took West Indies to a promising position.”Batting with Chris was good for me. He was batting quite well and going after the bowling so I decided to rotate the strike and have a close look at things from the other end. In the end, I got a few boundaries and got to my fifty quite quickly and managed to put the team in a good position and we will try to the win the game now.”The ball was not swinging much and there was not much pace in the pitch so with that in mind it was okay to hit the ball square, once you covered it. As an opener you will always get balls to score off.”Brathwaite was well set on 68 and looked to be heading towards a second consecutive Test hundred when he chased after a wide delivery from Neil Wagner and hit it straight to Tim Southee at short cover. Wagner felt Brathwaite’s wicket was crucial in giving New Zealand a glimpse of getting back into the contest.”It was quite good to break the partnership, and obviously, to squeeze the next batters coming in,” Wagner said. “They got away a bit this morning and batted quite well, so it wasn’t really an ideal start for us. We just need to focus on what we can do tomorrow and come in and change.”Obviously, the rain coming in is disappointing. We felt just before lunch and after lunch, we were putting a bit of pressure. If we had got another one or two wickets, we would have been in with a bit of a chance. It’s a bit disappointing, but we can’t control the weather.”Wagner, who sat out the first two Tests, said there was hardly anything on offer for the bowlers from the Kensington Oval pitch, but remained optimistic of his team’s chances owing to West Indies’ past batting collapses.”There’s not a lot of assistance in the pitch. I think it’s one of those grounds where a lot of boundaries get scored. It’s a quick outfield with small boundaries, so it can get a little away from you. There is a lot of value for shots. Our job is to just try and eliminate that and build a bit of pressure. As soon as we can do that, we can try to get a couple of quick wickets.”West Indies feed on the bowling like today and are confident in themselves. But we also know that they are the kind of team that crumble when they lose a couple of quick wickets, so we’re always hopeful of that. So for us, it’s just a matter of being patient and executing our plans for a longer period of time.”

Six Canadians in Americas U19 squad

Canada allrounder Nikhil Dutta has been named in a 14-man ICC Americas U19 squad that will take part in the WICB Regional U19 50-over competition in Guyana next month

Peter Della Penna26-Jul-2014Canada allrounder Nikhil Dutta has been named as part of a 14-man ICC Americas U19 squad that will take part in the West Indies Cricket Board Regional U19 50-over competition which takes place in Guyana from August 4-15. This will be the third time an ICC Americas composite team featuring players from Canada, Bermuda and the USA will be taking part in the WICB U19 tournament.Dutta was part of the ICC Americas U19 team in 2012 but was omitted in 2013, despite sweeping honors for Best Batsman, Best Bowler and Tournament MVP of the 2013 ICC Americas U19 championship, in order to be available for selection for the Canada senior team’s WCL Championship and Intercontinental Cup contests last August. He made his ODI debut in March 2013 against Kenya in the UAE. Dutta is one of six Canada players in the ICC Americas squad, including three others who return from the 2013 ICC Americas team: Abraash Khan, Farhan Malik and Armaan Kapoor.Bermuda’s Tre Manders and Delray Rawlins are also returning to the ICC Americas U19 team from last year and are two of four players chosen from the island. Manders and Rawlins have been promising prospects for the last several years. Manders made his senior team debut as an 18-year-old for Bermuda at the ICC Americas Division One T20 championship in Florida in March 2013. He scored 64 at number three in his 50-over debut in a win over Italy two months later at ICC WCL Division Three in Bermuda and opened the batting in November at the 2013 World T20 Qualifier in the UAE.Left-arm orthodox spinner Rawlins played against USA in a series of warm-up matches in March 2013 before making his official senior team debut that May at age 15 against USA at ICC WCL Division Three in Bermuda. He took 1 for 39 in a solid performance that was part of a five-wicket win, Bermuda’s first over USA in a live contest since 2005.Like Bermuda, USA also have four representatives in the squad. Among them is Keifer Phill, the 2014 Wingate Award winner as the most outstanding senior in the New York PSAL (Public Schools Athletic League) high school cricket competition. The selection is a homecoming of sorts for Phill and fellow USA player Trevis Ross. Both are originally from Guyana and developed much of their cricket there before migrating to New York City. The coaching staff will be led by ICC Americas High Performance Consultant Tom Evans. An Australian native, Evans joined the ICC Americas Office last year after spending three years as the ICC East Asia-Pacific Regional Development Officer and has previous experience with Cricket Victoria. One coach each from the three countries will also be part of the coaching staff: Canada’s Errol Barrow, Bermuda’s Allan Douglas and USA’s Linden Fraser.”This is very much a coach development initiative as it is a player one,” Evans told ESPNcricinfo. The squad will arrive in Georgetown on August 1 before attending WICB development seminars on August 2 and a training session on August 3 before the team’s first match against Trinidad & Tobago U19 at Demerara Cricket Club on August 4. ICC Americas will play a total of six group games. Last year’s ICC Americas U19 squad had a respectable showing in the WICB U19 tournament, defeating Leeward Islands by three wickets and scoring 209 in a chase against Windward Islands that ended in a tie.ICC Americas U19 squad: Nikhil Dutta, Aniket Joshi, Armaan Kapoor, Abraash Khan, Farham Malik, Arjun Parikh (Canada); Onias Bascome, Tre Manders, Delray Rawlins, Micah Simons (Bermuda); Vibhav Altekar, Arsh Buch, Keifer Phill, Trevis Ross (USA).

Dean Kino resigns from CA, CLT20 posts

Dean Kino, Cricket Australia’s general manager of legal and business affairs and a key figure in the organisation of the Champions League Twenty20, has resigned from his post

Amol Karhadkar08-Sep-2014Dean Kino, Cricket Australia’s general manager of legal and business affairs and a key figure in the Champions League T20, has resigned from his posts. Though Kino’s departure comes a few days before the sixth CLT20 begins, the organisers believe the tournament will not suffer.Besides holding a post in CA, who are stakeholders in the CLT20 along with the BCCI and Cricket South Africa, Kino served as a member of the CLT20 governing council and as director of legal and business affairs. He was the face of CA at the tournament.Kino’s departure led to a delay in the announcement of three key CLT20 committees. Until 1215 GMT on Monday, the CLT20 website said its committee members were yet to be confirmed. About 90 minutes later, the technical committee, code of behaviour committee and medical committee were updated, less than five days before the first qualifying match in Raipur on September 13.ESPNcricinfo understands Kino has been replaced with CA chairman Wally Edwards on the CLT20 governing council. “All organisations go through attrition and new people come in,” a BCCI official said.Kino, along with IPL chief operating officer Sundar Raman, was vital to the CLT20. He was considered the brain behind the player contracts and financial arrangements with the participating teams. According to an IPL franchise official, Kino was as important as Raman to the CLT20 set-up. He was called, “a pretty key person, being the head of legal and commercial matters.”Kino was also an important link in the relationship between the BCCI and CA, working alongside Edwards, Raman, N Srinivasan and the ECB chairman Giles Clarke for the recent constitutional changes in the ICC. He played a key role alongside CA’s general manager, media rights Stephanie Beltrame and chief executive James Sutherland on the board’s current television rights deal, which reaped A$590 million and secured Big Bash League coverage on the free-to-air Ten Network in Australia.Having departed CA last week, Kino is believed to be planning the start-up of his own sports law consulting business.
