Confusion prevails over IPL qualifier venue

There is confusion over the venue for the second qualifier of the IPL playoffs, with a likelihood that the match could be shifted to the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai from the Wankhede Stadium

There is confusion over the venue for the second qualifier of the IPL playoffs, with a likelihood that the match could be shifted to the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai from the Wankhede Stadium. Qualifier 2 will be played between the winner of the Eliminator against the loser of the first qualifier on May 30.”Yes, the second qualifier has been moved [to CCI],” Ranjib Biswal, the IPL chairman, told ESPNcricinfo. Biswal did not give any specific reason for the switch and was also non-committal when asked if the final, which is slotted to be played at the Wankhede, was in danger of being moved. He said: “no decision had been taken yet”.Biswal’s confirmation was news to Ravi Savant, the Mumbai Cricket Association [MCA] vice-president, who said he was unaware about the development. “The IPL has not told MCA anything like that,” Savant said.According to Savant, Sundar Raman, the IPL chief operating officer, was also unaware of the change in venue. “I spoke with the IPL chief operating officer who told me it was news to his ears also,” Savant, who is also a BCCI vice-president, said.Savant indicated that a situation over security on May 3 could be the possible reason for the shift. On that day, a few BCCI members who were attending the IPL governing council meeting at the board’s office in Wankhede Stadium were denied parking space by the Mumbai police, who were handling security for the match between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab.”The issue was about car pass. Being a match day the security is taken over by the Mumbai Police,” Savant said. “And it was not MCA’s fault because we cannot issue passes to everybody.”Savant, who was not in Mumbai on May 3, said that the association had written to Sunil Gavaskar, the interim BCCI president for the IPL. “We have officially written to Sunil Gavaskar, president-IPL, about the said difficulty. They said the issue was closed,” Savant said.Savant also pointed out that even if CCI would host the match Mumbai Indians would need to inform the MCA: “Mumbai Indians have signed a contract with MCA and if there is a shift of venue, thenn there can be a problem.”

Ninth straight loss for dismal Delhi

Kings XI Punjab warmed up for the playoffs with a demolition of Delhi Daredevils, whose batting failure sent them crashing to a ninth successive defeat

Isa Guha: Pietersen honest in assessment of Delhi

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsKings XI never looked back after Parvinder Awana’s double-wicket maiden•BCCIKings XI Punjab warmed up for the playoffs with a demolition of Delhi Daredevils, whose batting failure sent them crashing to a ninth successive defeat. Kevin Pietersen made his only fifty of the season, but he had next to no support as Daredevils were dismissed for 115 with nearly two overs remaining in their innings. Glenn Maxwell got his first duck of the tournament in the chase, but for a side that had made 190-plus six times this season, this target was easy meat. They took 13.5 overs to register their 11th win in 14 games. It was the bowling that Kings XI would have wanted to fire ahead of the qualifier against Kolkata Knight Riders. The attack did not disappoint George Bailey, and all his five bowlers chipped in with wickets. Daredevils did have a promising partnership, between Pietersen and Dinesh Karthik, and the duo took them to 44 for 1 in the sixth over with a flurry of boundaries. The promise was cut short by Parvinder Awana, whose double-wicket maiden stalled Daredevils’ progress. Karthik tried to turn one from off to leg, and the leading edge was snapped up at point. Kedar Jadhav tried to prevent the maiden with a charge down the pitch, but failed to clear mid-off.Pietersen kept soldiering on at the other end. He struggled to find his timing initially, but soon did, and started piercing the off-side infield frequently. Twice in an over, he opened the face to pick the gap with cover drives against Mitchell Johnson’s pace.Speaking to the on-air commentators from the dugout after his dismissal, Karthik said it was a good batting pitch, but the rest of the Daredevils batsmen kept coming and going. Manoj Tiwary was run out after a mix-up with his captain, and JP Duminy mishit a slog-sweep off the legspinner Karanveer Singh.Pietersen was the sixth man to fall for 58 off 41, to a marginal leg-before decision off Rishi Dhawan, with the ball arguably going down the leg side. The seventh wicket summed it up for Daredevils. Karanveer bowled a wide half-tracker, and Jimmy Neesham sliced a cut to backward point. The tail fell apart in no time to the left-arm spinner Akshar Patel.Mohammed Shami and Jaydev Unadkat worked up some pace and bounce, and reduced Kings XI to 16 for 2, the second wicket falling when Maxwell mishit a slog to Pietersen at mid-off. That was to be it for Daredevils as Manan Vohra and David Miller added 96 in ten overs to finish the match.Vohra impressed with his uninhibited hitting again on his way to 47 off 38, and Miller went slightly quicker to end on an unbeaten 47 off 34. The match was played in overcast and very windy conditions, and the drizzle became heavier just as Vohra fell four runs short of victory. Daredevils’ hopes had been washed away long before that.

McLaren becoming vital to SA's ODI plans

David Miller and Ryan McLaren, key men in South Africa’s middle order, hope to take the series in the second ODI in Pallekele

Firdose Moonda08-Jul-2014There’s not much that Dale Steyn gets whimsical about but the green hills and the cool mountain air of Kandy was enough bring out his softer side. “Gotta say this place is majestic! So beautiful! Blessed to see this part of the world!” Steyn tweeted.South Africa’s angry man has never played in Pallekele before, which Sri Lanka would hope works to their advantage in what is a must-win match for the hosts. South Africa have fond memories of Pallekele, though, because it is the only ground where they recorded a victory on the tour they would rather forget. After going 0-2 down in the series and appearing out of their depth with the bat, South Africa defended 223 in the third match, albeit their fightback was short-lived on the whole.”We did the right things, gave ourselves a chance at the end, put runs on the board and managed to bowl them out, so we are really excited about this game coming up,” said David Miller, who scored 85 in that match to inject authority into an otherwise limp South African innings. He had acted as an anchor that day and relished being able to spend more time at the crease than he usually does as a finisher. Now that South Africa’s top order has sorted itself out, Miller is back to his end-of-innings role and he seems to have become more confident. In the first ODI, he led the charge as South Africa took 53 runs off the last five overs. The most impressive aspect of Miller’s knock was the way he dealt with Sri Lanka’s death specialist Lasith Malinga, whom he kept out and punished when the length allowed it. “Taking performances from the past into the present gives me a sense of belief that I have done it before,” Miller said. “I’ve got to watch the ball as closely as I can. Malinga is one of the best death bowlers in the world. But the more you face someone who has an unusual action, the more comfortable you will feel.”Having a competent partner with whom you have a good understanding is also important at the end of an innings, and Miller has found that in Ryan McLaren, who was with him in Pallekele in 2013 and again in the first ODI in Colombo. McLaren scored 22 off 18 balls on Sunday to provide the support Miller needed.McLaren’s all-round contribution – 22 runs and two wickets – was one of the unsung performances of the game and it outshone that of Jacques Kallis. While it is too early to start questioning Kallis’ role in the team, McLaren’s performances are worth noting because he was expected to miss out when Kallis recommitted himself to the ODI team.McLaren has played in all but two of South Africa’s last 16 ODIs, dating back to the series against Sri Lanka last July, and alongside Kallis in three of them. While Kallis has been used as a batting allrounder, McLaren’s role is that of a bowling allrounder, but his consistent run in the side has been beneficial for McLaren’s batting. He has averaged 31.85 over the past year – compared to an overall average of 21.60 – with seven not-outs, which come with the territory of finishing an innings. His bowling numbers have also improved marginally – 21 wickets at 26.85 apiece in the last 12 months – and there have only been two occasions when he has not bowled at least six overs in the innings. “The advantage for allrounders is that you are always going to have the opportunity to contribute,” McLaren said. “There are going to be times when you don’t do well in one discipline, but then you can contribute in the other.”McLaren is fast becoming an integral part of South Africa’s ODI XI and is pleased with how the team is developing, especially from the last Sri Lankan tour to this one. “They came at us hard in the beginning and we showed a lot of character and finished the game clinically,” McLaren said of the first ODI. “That’s the most pleasing aspect – we’re starting to show some character when it starts getting tough, and it doesn’t get much tougher than playing in Sri Lankan conditions. This is one of the building blocks to the World Cup next year, and every game in that process is important.”When Steyn can peel himself away from the views, he would probably agree.

Sangakkara likens Pietersen to Malinga

Kumar Sangakkara likened the England team’s differences with Kevin Pietersen to Lasith Malinga’s presence in the Sri Lanka team, as he contemplated playing an England side without Pietersen in the Tests. Sangakkara has been a vocal advocate for an inclusive Sri Lanka dressing room throughout his career, and said England posed a less stern challenge without Pietersen in the middle order.”I don’t know the reasons for KP’s exclusion but the fact remains that he’s an amazing player,” Sangakkara told . “For us, it’s been like that with Lasith Malinga. He is very different in the way he looks, and as a person. Not everyone gets on well with each other in a team. There are certain people you might not have dinner with, but that doesn’t take away from the fact they will be valuable players in a national cause, going out trying to win matches.”Malinga has been among Sri Lanka’s strike weapons in limited-overs cricket, and has crafted a reputation for being the most consistent death bowler in the world. Those virtues earned him the Player-of-the-Series award in the recent ODI series.”Without going into details, we’ve had our own issues and difficulties over the years inside the dressing-room and outside it,” Sangakkara said. “We’ve dealt with that very well as a side, and having 11 similar players is definitely not a positive thing. Having different players, different attitudes, different individuals and bringing that difference into the mix but being able to commit 100% to a team cause – that’s the beauty of cricket.”Pietersen had had an impressive record against Sri Lanka, averaging 51.41 across 11 Tests. His most recent Test against Sri Lanka had produced one of his most memorable innings, when he struck 151 off 165 in Colombo, to change the game’s course and set England on track for a series-leveling win.”I’ve watched him, admired him and he is undoubtedly an out-and-out match-winner. Of course, as an opposition player I’m not disappointed he’s not around. We know what damage he could have done to us, and the damage he has done to us before. To not have him walk in – that presence he has – is a bit of a relief.”Sangakkara also said he would consider returning to county cricket once he had wound down his international career. Sangakkara prepared for the ongoing tour with two County Championship matches for Durham last month. The upcoming Tests at Lord’s and Headingley are likely to be his last in England.”A couple of seasons in England would be fantastic. I really enjoyed my time in 2007 with Warwickshire, and Durham have been great. I like the feel of county dressing-rooms. There is a huge amount of ability in them, and a huge amount of hunger. Durham have been exceptional in that sense. It’s something I would like to experience again once I’ve finished with Sri Lanka.”

All-round Udarata ease to big win

A round-up of the Super 4s Twenty20 Tournament matches played on June 28

Shehan Jayasuriya provided the impetus to Udarata Rulers’ innings with a 30-ball 50•SLC

A 30-ball 50 from Shehan Jayasuriya, followed by an incisive performance from Udarata Rulers’ bowlers, helped the team to a 55-run victory against Western Troopers for their second straight win of the tournament.Udarata, put in to bat, scored at more than seven an over right from the start as the openers Dhananjaya de Silva and Upul Tharanga raced to 55 in 7.2 overs.Troopers fought their way back into the contest by dismissing both batsmen in successive overs, but a 60-run association for the third wicket between Jayasuriya and Chamara Silva once again helped Udarata wrest the advantage.Jayasuriya thumped four fours and two sixes during his half-century, and Lahiru Thirimanne’s 10-ball 21 included one four and one six, as Udarata finished with 174 for 5.Troopers never got going in their chase, and wickets hindered their momentum at regular intervals. Ajantha Mendis was the pick of the Udarata bowlers, taking 3 for 28, while Dilhara Lokuhettige, Asela Gunaratne and Milinda Siriwardana shared six scalps between them to dismiss Troopers for 119 in 18.2 overs. The Southern Express v Yaal Blazers game was washed out. After Southern Express chose to bat, they put up 139 on the back of an unbeaten 43 from Jehan Mubarak. Alankara Asanka Silva and Ramith Rambukwella were chiefly responsible for holding Southern Express back, sharing seven wickets between them while conceding just 46 in their eight. Yaal Blazers did not really get off to a solid start in the case though, falling to 21 for 2 in four overs before play had to be abandoned.

Robson provides light for Leicester

ScorecardAngus Robson made a second half-century in the match•Getty Images

Leicestershire’s torment has been so acute that the gloom over Grace Road shows no sign of lifting but in Angus Robson there is a flicker of light amidst the despondency. It wouldn’t be difficult to stand out from a dressing room that has endured a barren run stretching back to September 2012 but Robson’s enterprise warrants more than a pitiable mention. It’s improbable that his latest exploits will go some way to salvaging something from this game as his dismissal, for 81, four overs before the close, tipped the impetus back in Surrey’s favour; the visitors remain 110 runs in arrears with eight second innings wickets in hand.Yet, if some of his team-mates could lift themselves from their own batting stupor and adopt a similar means of rear-guard action than Robson’s efforts may just, for the first time this term, be rewarded. For this remains a surface that rewards application and genuine strokeplay, demonstrated by Robson in a second half-century of the match and his seventh of what is proving to be a productive season. That Leicestershire managed to withstand Surrey’s victory charge and take this game into a fourth day is a feat itself; small gains and all that. The day began and ended with night watchman Nathan Buck holding fort admirably and showing the perseverance that those above him, Robson and Niall O’Brien apart, failed to exhibit during the intervening period. The hosts are still in the primacy and hold all the cards but there will be an element of disquiet for Gary Wilson overnight. If anything, conditions for heavy and quick run -scoring has improved over the course of the first three days and with Jade Dernbach unlikely to take to the field on Wednesday – he’s set to go for a scan on his right hamstring after pulling up mid-over after lunch – Surrey’s options are superficially threadbare. Both Matthew Dunn and Chris Tremlett looked wary by the close after Surrey had enforced the follow-on shortly before tea. Robson and Matthew Boyce looked unperturbed in an opening stand of 67 before the latter fell attempting to pad away Zafar Ansari. “When you don’t offer a shot you relinquish the benefit of the doubt,” Boyce admitted afterwards.”But, we’ve done well today. If anything, their bowlers look a bit tired and if we can bat until tea tomorrow, we can reassess then but our main aim is to save the game.”That they can even contemplate coming away with a share of the spoils is down to Robson. Not unlike his brother Sam in appearance or batting style, he was quick on his feet and astute enough to take advantage as fatigue crept into Surrey’s efforts. Most of his runs come square of the wicket, either punching anything full through the covers or piercing the infield on the leg side with a disdainful crunch but his temperament is striking.Once again, he disregarded the scoreboard in counter-thrusting his way to fifty and foiling Surrey’s advances. At one point, he had 53 of Leicestershire’s 82 runs to his name. After falling an over before the close on Monday, similar circumstances led to his downfall 24 hours later. Batty, springing in from the Pavilion End, induced an unconvincing stroke, so atypical of what had gone before, and Rory Burns had the wherewithal to snaffle a difficult chance at short-leg.Indeed, Ansari and Batty will shoulder much of the workload again on Wednesday. They have bowled 66 overs between them thus far, operating in tandem with plenty of reward. After Dan Redfern lasted just three deliveries of the morning, falling across a straight one from Dunn, the spinners proceeded to make inroads into the fragile Leicestershire order.Batty extracted turn and bounce to find the edge of Josh Cobb and the end of Ben Raine’s plucky resistance bookended the run-out of Rob Taylor; it epitomised Leicestershire’s woes. O’Brien nurdled one, like he so often does, into the leg side and set off immediately but his partner was daydreaming and by the time he picked up a head of speed, Dunn raced around from midwicket to throw down middle stump.Charlie Shreck is a veteran of the county circuit and while he may be considered as a genuine No. 11 he used all his nous to forge as many runs as possible before the Foxes went under. Raine’s 73-minute vigil ended with a thin edge off Ansari and O’Brien couldn’t prevent himself from becoming Batty’s second victim of the innings. But Shreck, despite suppositions, is no mug with the bat. After attuning himself and taking the sting out of Surrey’s bite, he shifted from nothing-will-get-past mode to a destructive approach. He took a particular liking to the seamers and in clubbing six boundaries and putting on 39 with Jigar Naik, he lifted Leicestershire past 250 and equally significantly, quashed any thoughts that this pitch was turning into a spinner’s haven.Robson proceeded to affirm that and in doing so has manufactured a position in which Leicestershire can boldly harbour hopes of thwarting a Surrey victory that had looked a foregone conclusion from the early stages of this game. He’s left it up to his team mates now but after all, it’s about time they pulled their weight.
