Having started well in the Championship – Middlesex won their first two games and were unbeaten after seven – they fell away sharply, losing five of their last nine, including defeat against Derbyshire.The problem was partially injuries to key bowlers and an over-reliance upon Chris Rogers, who was absent with Australia for a large part of the season, and Sam Robson, who started brightly but faded. The opening pair contributed six of the eight Championship centuries recorded by Middlesex players and not a single England-born player registered a century for them in the 2013 season. Dawid Malan – with a Championship average of 21.50 – and Joe Denly – 26.08 – struggled to deliver on their potential and left the batting appearing brittle.Before the season, there were high hopes for the impact of James Harris, signed amid great competition from Glamorgan, and Toby Roland-Jones, who was tipped as a potential England seamer. But as it transpired, both men struggled for fitness and rarely performed at their best, leaving Middlesex as reliant on Tim Murtagh as ever. 2014 prospects
England call-ups could have a huge impact at Middlesex. They should start the season with Eoin Morgan, having chosen the Championship over the IPL, Steven Finn and Sam Robson available and vying for England selection. But they are certain to lose Morgan for limited-overs duty at least and could well lose Robson to the Test team for much of the season.At full strength – and they almost never were in 2013 – Middlesex have the sort of seam attack – Finn, Murtagh, Harris and Roland-Jones – that could win a Championship. With the underrated Gareth Berg and Neil Dexter in support, it is an attack that should also prove effective in limited-overs cricket, with Dan Christian expected to be added as a T20 overseas player. But Middlesex’s batting order will have to contribute far more consistently if the team are to make the title challenge of which they are capable.Key player
It is Rayner’s all-round skill that balances the Middlesex team. But while he is a good slip catcher and decent batsman, it is his off-spin that will be required if Middlesex are to challenge for the Championship title. He finished last season well, albeit on helpful surfaces, and impressed enough to win a call-up to the England Lions squad. Even on unhelpful surfaces – and he came across a few – he managed to retain control with the best economy-rate of any of the frontline bowlers that have remained with the club. If he can continue his improvement in 2014, Middlesex will have an impressive attack that is perhaps only bettered by Warwickshire.Bright young thing
Robson has a fantastic chance to establish himself as an England Test opener over the coming months. Bearing an uncanny resemblance to Mike Atherton at the crease, 24-year-old Robson is old-fashioned in many ways: he leaves the ball well, converts his good starts and appears to have the concentration and appetite for batting that bodes well for an opener. Some opposition have suggested he lacks the power or range of stroke to damage opposition but, in a format where accumulation and crease occupation is key, Robson has every motivation to start the season well for Middlesex. But it might be noted that for all Middlesex’s improvement in recent years, very few senior members of their side can be considered locally developed.Captain/coach
Depending on availability, Rogers will captain the four-day side, with Morgan captaining the limited-overs sides. Neil Dexter will deputise as required. Angus Fraser remains as director of cricket, combining the role with his new position as one of the England selectors.ESPNcricinfo verdict
Contenders in all formats. But the suspicion that too many highly-talented players – the likes of Finn and Malan – are out of form or unfulfilled lingers and plants doubts about their ability to sustain a challenge. Anything less than a top-four finish in the Championship should be considered a disappointment and they should be pushing for the knock-out stages in the limited-overs competitions.

The good news for Sunrisers is that they rode those spells as how the three perform against the impressive trio of Super Kings seamers and their steady spinners is going to be critical for them.More important perhaps is going to be how Sunrisers’ bowlers deal with Super Kings’ batsmen. The sight of Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum can send sepulchral chill waves among bowlers early, so a lot will depend on if Dale Steyn raises his game a notch. It’s a big game now and Dhawan needs his trump card to find his mojo again.Faf du Plessis is the only Super Kings batsman in top four not to score a half-century till now. But apart from one match – against Rajasthan Royals – the lack of runs from his bat hasn’t really affected the team as the openers have been brilliant. There is no immediate threat to his place in the team – MS Dhoni likes to stick to his XI – but du Plessis needs some runs to fortify the team’s batting further.Stats and trivia Amit Mishra is one short of becoming the only second bowler in the IPL to collect 100 wickets. Mohammad Hafeez has stepped down as Pakistan’s T20 captain, just days after the team’s exit from the group stage of the 2014 World T20 in Bangladesh. Hafeez has also relinquished the vice-captaincy of the ODI side as well.He was given the T20 captaincy in May 2012 after Misbah-ul-Haq decided to step down. Being a player I am ready to play under any captain.”Moin Khan, meanwhile, has offered to continue with his role as head coach, though his initial contract was only for the Asia Cup and World T20.Moin replaced Dav Whatmore when the PCB pressed towards having a homegrown coach but Pakistan’s results under him have been mixed although they reached the final of the Asia Cup where they lost to Sri Lanka. But Moin defended his position saying it was always going to be difficult for him to have a significant impact in a short period of time.”Cricket remains the same whoever the coach will be but it takes time to and you can’t expect anything big in such a short-time,” he said. “We did make the Asia Cup final but until you have a long-term role you can’t make any difference.”

He, however, refused to divulge the reasons for the meeting.Cairns told that the meeting had been held in New Zealand and it was cut short because the investigators had to return. He stressed that he would continue cooperating with them through his legal team in the UK.”I maintain I have nothing to hide and we remain totally committed to doing whatever it takes to prove that via whatever means necessary,” he said. ”I will therefore continue to liaise with them via my UK solicitors. Marvan Atapattu has been named Sri Lanka’s interim head coach, following the resignation of Paul Farbrace earlier this week. Ruwan Kalpage, Sri Lanka’s fielding coach and former offspinner, has been appointed his assistant. The appointments were for Sri Lanka’s upcoming tour of the Ireland and England as well as the home series against South Africa to follow, SLC confirmed on Friday.Atapattu had applied for the head coach position when Graham Ford had announced he would vacate the job, and had progressed to the final round of interviews in November, before Farbrace was appointed. Atapattu has been Sri Lanka’s batting coach since for three years, and had been assistant coach since March 2013.He has earned a reputation for his technical acumen – as a coach, as he had been as a player – but he was deemed unready for head coach role late last year. Both Farbrace and Ford, however, have publicly lauded his work ethic.The appointments had been made on the recommendations of a three-man coach selection committee, which consists of chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya, head of coaching Jerome Jayaratne, and cricket committee chairman Ranjit Fernando. In the days following Farbrace’s departure Jayasuriya had issued strong signals Atapattu would be named interim coach, as the fast-approaching tour did not allow SLC enough time to make a more permanent appointment.”We should look to give responsibility to Marvan, because he’s been around for a few years,” Jayasuriya had said. “The bowling and fielding coaches will also have to take a lot of responsibility.”Among the most difficult aspects of Atapattu’s job will be devising an effective strategy against an opponent who now possesses intimate knowledge of Sri Lanka’s strengths, weaknesses and team dynamics, thanks to Farbrace’s appointment as England assistant coach. Sri Lanka have not won a Test in England since 2006, but this tour represents a good opportunity to improve that record, while England themselves seek to rebuild after a disastrous winter.”Farbrace knows inside out about Sri Lanka’s cricketers, and that’s the biggest challenge for us,” Jayasuriya said. “He knows our batsmen and bowlers from top to bottom, and what we have been discussing in the last four or five months. I hope Marvan, Ruwan, the bowling coach can do a lot of work with the senior cricketers and come out of this situation.”The ODIs in the tour are also a vital step en route to the 2015 World Cup, as Sri Lanka do not play outside Asia for six months, following that series.
