Bradley Dial’s all-round display was instrumental in South Africa Under-19s securing a 17-run victory over Australia Under-19s in the first match of the Quadrangular one-day series in Visakhapatnam.Dial’s innings was the sole source of impetus for South Africa, who were 43 for 5 in the 13th over after winning the toss. Matthew Fotia, who has taken 17 wickets in his last seven matches, continued his fine form, claiming all his three wickets in the space of two overs.Dial, however, was resolute, and his 48 off 53 balls included five fours and one six. But South Africa had slipped to 119 for 9 before a last-wicket stand of 60 between No. 11 Andile Phehlukwayo, who made 39 off 38 balls, and Justin Dill took them to a fighting total. South Africa folded for 179 in 44 overs, as legspinner Tom Andrews picked up two wickets.Damien Mortimer and Jaron Morgan set up Australia’s chase with a steady opening partnership, but the introduction of spin caused multiple mini-collapses. From 40 for 0, Australia slipped to 67 for 4 as Yaseen Valli’s offbreaks fetched two wickets in successive overs. Jake Doran kept Australia’s hopes alive with a sedate 35, but once Dial removed Cameron Valante to end the 46-run partnership and then claimed Tom Andrews in the 43rd over, Australia were bowled out for 162.Deepak Hooda powered India Under-19s to 291 in their 50 overs before Kuldeep Yadav took four wickets to set up a massive 148-run win over Zimbabwe Under-19s.Hooda cut lose after a 77-run stand with Sarfaraz Khan was broken in the 45th over. India leaped from 219 for 6 to 291 as Hooda dominated a seventh-wicket stand of 72 runs with Aamir Gani, who contributed only 14. Wicketkeeper Ankush Bains and captain Vijay Zol gave India a solid start, but they wobbled primarily because of Kieran Geyle’s three for 32. Hooda’s 83 off 55 balls, however, with five fours and five sixes, transformed the innings.Zimbabwe’s chase was hampered early when Yadav dismissed the openers with only 36 on the board and their recovery efforts were foiled by the Hooda-Gani combination again. Offspinner Gani’s double-strike in the 31st over accounted for the innings top-scorer Ryan Hurl, for 46, and Luke Jongwe. With the score at 116 for 5, Hooda dismissed Charles Kwinje and later captain Malcolm Lake for 13 and Yadav returned to finish off the tail, claiming two more wickets.

CCS demoted after arriving late to match

Cricket Coaching School were demoted from Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League for arriving late to their match against Brothers Union on October 8

Mohammad Isam24-Oct-2013Cricket Coaching School has been demoted from the Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League for arriving late for their match against Brothers Union on October 8 . They will play First Division Cricket League next season, and all points scored against them or by them will be removed from consideration as had happened last season when Surjo Tarun were relegated for a similar reason. They were reportedly were stuck in a traffic jam on Jatrabari road while en route to Fatullah Cricket Stadium from Kalabaga. According to match referee Samiur Rahman, who was travelling with the team on the 20km journey, a lorry had collapsed on the other side of road, approximately 10km from the ground, forcing one lane to be closed and a collision between two buses caused more delay.CCS reached the ground ten minutes before the toss, but about 45 minutes after their scheduled arrival time. The match referee asked for a delayed start, because a provision for a 30-minute grace period had been added to the by-laws because of the Surjo Tarun incident last year – they had arrived late to BKSP ground and were demoted to the First Division Cricket League. But Brothers Union refused to take part in the toss and boycotted the match. The tournament was closed for Eid holidays but, on Wednesday, the league’s organisers Cricket Committee of Dhaka Metropolis, who were investigating the matter, announced the verdict and said it was taken according to the tournament’s rules. The Dhaka Premier League will resume on October 27 and CCS’s demotion means that only one other team will face relegation this season. Currently, Khelaghar and 17-time champions Abahani are at the bottom of the table, with one win each, but since Abahani’s win was against CCS, those points will be taken away, leaving them winless.

A conferir o promissor duelo à parte.

Mills pleased with NZ's T20 comeback

New Zealand captain Kyle Mills said he was happy with the manner in which his team had overcome Bangladesh’s aggressive charge in the only Twenty20 between the two sides in Mirpur. New Zealand won the game by 15 runs their first on this tour after they drew the Test series 0-0 and lost the ODI series 3-0.”I think we were on the front foot from ball one,” Mills said. “To post 204 runs, I think the Bangladesh side was behind the game from then on. They batted really well in the first seven overs to keep it just under par. With us picking up wickets, we were always slightly in front. I think we batted magnificently well. The opening partnership took the game by the scruff of the neck.”Ross Taylor crafted another beautiful innings and Colin Munro carried on the form from the last game. When you put up a decent score on the board, you’re reasonably confident at the halfway mark. But we still had a job to do with the ball. The Bangladesh side, like they have done all series, came pretty hard at us. It was a good, entertaining match and it was nice to come out on the right side.”Apart from Munro, who scored an unbeaten 73 to follow up his 85 in the third ODI, Mills also praised allrounder Corey Anderson and opener Anton Devcich. Anderson gave away 21 runs in four overs and picked up two wickets, while Devcich hit a half-century on his T20I debut, setting the platform for the visitors’ total.”Devcich assessed the conditions really well. He didn’t try to be anyone else,” Mills said. “He played his own shots and played them with confidence. I was really pleased for him. This is the first time that he has played the T20 international for his country and he stood up and played with great confidence.’I think the Bangladesh side played our spinners really well today and Corey Anderson really stood up, which he has done every time he’s had an opportunity with the bat or ball in this series. He is a great find for us and today I think he bowled exceptionally well,” said Mills.New Zealand’s bowlers managed to strike early and Bangladesh were struggling at 19 for 3 in the second over. However, Mushfiqur led the charge and helped Bangladesh keep pace with the high asking rate. By the seventh over, Bangladesh were 85 for 4 and Mills said that the aggressive batting was a glimpse of how Bangladesh had improved in the last few years.”At the halfway mark, I was pretty confident that we were going to do the job,” Mills said. “We just had to bowl well and take the early wicket. The bowling group really stepped up today from what was an adequate performance in the last ODI. But you have to hand it to the Bangladesh side who played well in those first seven overs.”They are playing pretty aggressive cricket under Shane Jurgensen. I think when you get into a situation like this – a sell-out crowd, one-game series – there is only one way the Bangladesh side was going to play. We were fully aware that they were going to come pretty hard at us, which they did. We were fortunate to pick up early wickets which nullified it.”New Zealand are a far better side in the T20 format, having won their third game of five completed matches this year, and the scheduling of the game was an advantage for them, coming at the end of an average tour.”We turned the page pretty quickly from the 3-0 ODI series. We really had to,” Mills said. “We had two days to prepare for this game. Let’s not forget we beat Bangladesh the last time we played a T20 against them in Sri Lanka in March 2012.”We were pretty confident that we could come out and do the job today if we played good cricket. I think in the previous games, we always had two or three guys stick up for our side, but today we had four or five put in pretty solid performances.”

Pietersen promises tribute to deceased friend

Kevin Pietersen has promised any success he has in his 100th Test to the memory of a boyhood friend who died recently

George Dobell in Brisbane20-Nov-2013Kevin Pietersen has promised any success he has in his 100th Test to the memory of a boyhood friend who died recently.Pietersen, who will become the 10th England player to reach the 100 Test landmark when England begin their Ashes campaign in Brisbane on Thursday, was granted compassionate leave at the start of the tour to fly to South Africa to deliver the eulogy at the funeral of Jon Cole-Edwardes who died from a rare form of cancer on September 27 aged just 33.”I got to say goodbye to him 18 hours before he passed away and left us,” Pietersen said. “He left his wife and twins behind.”He was my best mate who I grew up with as a kid and losing him has really hurt me over the last month or so. It has been bad. I grew up with this guy since I was a baby and every single holiday we went on together, literally he is like my brother and saying goodbye to him 18 hours beforehand was just so tough.”I will be thinking about him if I get a big one here, I’ve been thinking about black armbands and stuff, but I don’t want to get the violin out and all that. I’d rather just concentrate on things. I’ve been speaking with his mum and yesterday she said ‘Jon will be watching’.”Pietersen admitted the bereavement had put his cricketing career into perspective.”This cricket malarkey is simple,” he said. “I had to go and do a eulogy at his funeral on the Saturday when the guys were already here. I was a shambles there.”He also admitted there had been times during the ‘text-gate’ episode in 2012 when he thought he would never represent England again. Now, though, he insisted the dressing room environment was “fantastic” and, as well as crediting improved communication, also accepted that all parties had “grown up”.”There probably were a few occasions [when I thought I may not play again], yes,” Pietersen said. “Emails were flying around and telephone conversations were being had. I think this stuff is for when I finish my career. I will give a very good explanation as to how things were and how things weren’t when I’m done.”It’s a nicer environment now I think. I’ve seen comments from the players that we all made mistakes last year. And we’ve all grown up and actually grown a lot tighter.”If you look at the environment now it’s absolutely fantastic and I’m not lying I’m being dead straight. We’re all having so much fun and that front page [of an Australian tabloid which suggested Pietersen was unpopular with his England teammates] was so funny because 10 hours before that we’d all had an amazing team dinner. We all had such a great time in Sydney, such a great time together, that when you see a front page like that it just makes me laugh.”Last year there was a bit of treading on eggshells and pussy-footing around, whereas now the boys have acknowledged that it is time to do some business as an England team and that is what we are here to do.”While Pietersen reiterated his desire to play on until at least the 2015 World Cup, he accepted he may require minor knee surgery at some stage as an indirect result of the bone bruising he suffered in New Zealand early this year. “Clearly the knee is something that I will have to get looked at and get sorted,” he said. “But if it does need an op it won’t be a big one because the bone damage is all sorted. It’s just a little bit of niggly bits and pieces, which is actually minor. It just causes a bit of discomfort on delivery when I bend down but since I’ve had the injection it’s been fine. That just masks the issue so it’s up to me to make sure I do all the hard yards and all the bits and pieces to keep me good.”I want to enjoy the next two or three years of international cricket for England because last year wasn’t fun. I can make it a lot more fun and so can the team, and we’re all doing that at the moment.”

England secure Saker until 2015

David Saker will remain England’s bowling coach until at least the end of the 2015 season after agreeing to a contract extension

David Saker will remain England’s bowling coach until at least the end of the 2015 season after agreeing to a contract extension, as the ECB aims to ensure they can ward off any potential interest from other nations.Saker replaced Ottis Gibson in the role when Gibson became West Indies coach in early 2010, and his first assignment was England’s victorious World Twenty20 campaign in the Caribbean. Since then he has helped form a strong hand of fast bowlers at Andy Flower’s disposal, led by James Anderson, and is often spoken about in glowing terms by the England quicks. His current deal was due to run until early 2014 and now he has been inked in for a period that includes the World Twenty20 in Bangladesh, the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand plus home Test series against Sri Lanka, India, New Zealand and the 2015 Ashes.”I am delighted to have the opportunity to continue working with England,” Saker said. “I have been privileged enough to have been involved in some memorable moments for English cricket over the last three and a half years and worked with some outstanding cricketers.”Given the calibre of players in and around the side at the moment, and the hunger and commitment from all involved, I am very much looking forward to another very exciting period over the next couple of years, starting with the immediate challenge of retaining the Ashes.”Hugh Morris, the outgoing managing director of England cricket, was well aware of Saker’s global value, although any notion of a switch to Australia had been dampened by Craig McDermott’s return as Test bowling coach.”His contribution has been such that we are aware that other countries would dearly have loved David to be a part of their management group and that is why this announcement is so important,” Morris said.”David has made – and continues to make – an enormous contribution to the success of the England team. Since joining us in May 2010 he has worked with – and developed – an outstanding bowling unit which has been key to winning two successive Ashes series, winning a global event and climbing to No. 1 in the world.”It is a great a boost on the first day of this Ashes campaign that we can confirm that David has committed himself to the England cause until the end of summer of 2015.”Under Saker, England’s pace attack has been built around Anderson and Stuart Broad, while Tim Bresnan, who is trying to recover from a stress fracture of the back in order to play a part in the Ashes, is someone Saker rates enormously. He will also have been instrumental in the decision to stock the Ashes squad with tall fast bowlers. However, although regularly discussed as one of the best attacks in the world, and while there is a collection of fast bowlers vying to play the supporting role, there have been occasions in the last 18 months to question quite how potent England’s other options are.Steven Finn, who has played all his Tests under Saker, remains a work in progress and has provided Saker with one of his tougher challenges. Finn was encouraged to try a shortened run in New Zealand earlier this year, but returned to his traditional run-up during the home season, and then lost his place following the first Ashes Test. The other quicks in Australia are the uncapped Boyd Rankin and the fit-again Chris Tremlett, the latter who played a key role in 2010-11, but now faces questions as to whether he retains the same potency following his serious back problems. Ben Stokes, whose bowling has developed significantly, is there as an all-round option. In the early weeks of the Ashes tour, Saker will have the chance to work with one of England’s potential next generation after Tymal Mills, the Essex left-armer, was asked to fly to Australia to aid the preparations. England, who are likely to face Mitchell Johnson during the series, do not have a left-arm pacemen in their ranks currently and it remains one of the boxes Saker is desperate to tick.

Friendly foes await Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka’s fickle cricketing landscape, Pakistan have lately been viewed as one of the friendliest foes

Andrew Fidel Fernando09-Dec-2013In Sri Lanka’s fickle cricketing landscape, Pakistan have lately been viewed as one of the team’s friendliest foes. Sri Lanka fans’ admiration for Pakistan’s cricket has been founded on shared ground. Most obviously, there is resemblance in cricketing philosophy; Lasith Malinga and Sohail Tanvir are products of their unique milieu, but it is not difficult to imagine a round-arm slinger from Rawalpindi, or a wrong-footed left armer from Rathgama. No other nation, perhaps, could have easily produced either. There is also the rich recent history of spin, shrouded in mystery. Between Pakistan and Sri Lanka, they have owned the progenitor of the in Saqlain Mushtaq, the man who made the ball famous in Muttiah Muralitharan, its best current practitioner in Saeed Ajmal, and a rising bowler with an improving version of the ball, in Sachithra Senanayake. Then there are the shambolic administrations, which more often appear to hinder the national sides than support them, while Sri Lanka’s newly-formed one-sided rivalry with India has bred another thread of fraternal goodwill. Coincidentally too, the tour will be both Dav Whatmore and Graham Ford’s final weeks in charge of their sides. The former was effectively let go, the latter chose to walk. Both sides also have produced alluring players of spin, many of whom have retired or are just about to, and young men are now charged with filling shoes and scoreboards. In that regeneration, though, there are mutual hints of decline.Ten months of selection policy focused on grooming the next generation has not future-proofed Sri Lanka’s batting unit yet. Dinesh Chandimal and Lahiru Thirimanne have had encouraging returns in Tests, but their limited-overs statistics don’t yet suggest they are the next Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara – whom they will inevitably be compared with. Jayawardene’s absence from the limited-overs leg of this series may allow both batsmen to bat higher up in the order, which should suit their abilities better than the finishing roles they had been saddled with.In Tests, both teams will also be fielding young, inexperienced opening pairs. Shan Masood and Khurram Manzoor are at almost identical places in their career as Sri Lanka’s likely openers, Dimuth Karunaratne and Kaushal Silva. All four have a shot at embedding themselves in the international arena, on tracks that should not be far from those on which they excel at home.Though they are at disparate ends of their careers, there are similarities for the teams’ main captains too. Misbah-ul-Haq is an unpopular captain for some, and while Angelo Mathews has had moderate success at the helm, he is still treading lightly as a leader and his personal form has been inconsistent. A poor tour for either man might have loosened their grip on the reins, only, there are few viable alternatives. The teams are well-matched on most counts. Pakistan beat Sri Lanka 1-0 in their last Test series in the UAE, but Sri Lanka reversed that scoreline at home, when they dominated the three-match series last year. Sri Lanka’s batting perhaps gives them the edge in ODIs and Twenty20s, while Pakistan have just returned from a successful trip to South Africa, where the highly-rated India side is presently being humiliated. And, perhaps, that is Pakistan’s greatest advantage in the approach to the tour. While Sri Lanka have been reduced to playing matches against themselves and watching rain ruin their first meaningful cricket since July, Pakistan are fighting-fit from five months on the international treadmill. Their Test loss to Zimbabwe in September now seems a distant memory, after more encouraging results against South Africa.Sri Lanka, meanwhile, have not played overseas since July, and in Tests, the New Year’s Eve match will be their first against a top-eight opposition since this year’s New Year Test in Sydney. One of the foremost reasons Sri Lanka Cricket refused Pakistan’s request to play one Test under lights is because its players would already be adjusting to playing Tests again; an orange ball and floodlights may have complicated preparation further – particularly as there are no practice matches before the Tests. There is already buzz in Sri Lanka for this tour, primarily because the public has had so long to look forward to it. It is a stage for young men of both teams to make defining plays, and with two major limited-overs trophies now on the horizon, raising stakes further, the subplots unfolding over a six-week battle may prove just as engrossing as the major narrative.

Rizwan fifty propels SNGPL to final

ScorecardFile photo: Shoaib Malik top-scored for Pakistan International Airlines•Pakistan Cricket Board

Mohammad Rizwan’s composed half-century led Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited to the final of the first National Department Twenty20 Cup, beating Pakistan International Airlines by nine wickets. Rizwan struck five fours and two sixes during his 60 off 54 balls to help overhaul a middling target of 108, with three overs to spare. The chase began briskly as left-arm seamer Najaf Shah’s opening over went for 10 runs, but he bounced back in his next to dismiss Taufeeq Umar (12 off 8), who holed out to mid-on. SNGPL survived another scare in the same over when it appeared Rizwan had been caught behind, but replays showed Shah had overstepped. Rizwan was on at two at time and took full advantage as went on to reach his first fifty of the tournament with a six over mid-wicket. Ali Waqas (28 off 41) lent good support as their unbeaten 93-run union for the second wicket ensured a comprehensive victory.Earlier, PIA, who had been put in, began poorly as Imran Ali knocked over both openers for single-figures. The Malik brothers, Adeel and Shoaib, attempted to stabilise the innings but the spinners kept them on a tight leash and soon Yasir Shah, the legspinner, lured Adeel with an overpitched delivery which was hit straight to Samiullah Khan at mid-off.Shoaib, who was ignored for the Pakistan T20 squad due to face Sri Lanka next week, held the innings together. He laced three consecutive sixes off Tanveer Sikandar in the 17th over, but PIA’s hopes of a competitive total faded with his dismissal in the next over. Fahad Iqbal (8 off 6) and Sheharyar Ghani (14 off 12) contributed 20 in 15 last balls to push their side past 100.
