ACSU's report on BPL expected after Eid holidays

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has asked the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit to submit its report on the alleged corruption in the Bangladesh Premier League after the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, which would mean any day after August 12

Mohammad Isam27-Jul-2013The Bangladesh Cricket Board has asked the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit to submit its report on the alleged corruption in the Bangladesh Premier League after the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, which would mean any day after August 12. According to BCB president Nazmul Hassan, the report will be ready within the next nine days.He also hinted that two other players, who have been mentioned extensively in Bangladeshi newspapers ever since Mohammad Ashraful confessed to the ACSU investigative officers, could be implicated in the BPL corruption charges.”I understand that the report will be completed by August 5,” Hassan said. “They [ACSU] wanted to submit it on August 8 or 9, but we asked them to come just after Eid, on August 12 or 13. Whatever names I have read in the paper, that is what I have been hearing unofficially. I haven’t heard of anyone of Ashraful’s stature [being implicated].”Hassan also suggested that the ACSU could be lenient towards Ashraful because of his confession and help during the investigation. “Just like all the other cricket boards and the ICC, we also firmly believe in zero tolerance towards match-fixing. Because Ashraful has admitted to his involvement and helped the ACSU, he may get some benefit. This is strictly my opinion, I am not sure if that is what the ACSU will do.”Ashraful has found sympathy from sections of the public, especially after he apologised in the media last month. Among his team-mates there has been a mixture of pity and commonsense, with Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim asking for exemplary punishment.

A century from opener Sami Aslam, followed by an incisive spell of 4 for 25 from left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar, helped Pakistan Under-19s lift the tri-nation tourmanent trophy with a comprehensive 192-run win over England Under-19s in the final at Trent Bridge.Aslam, the Man of the Match, struck 10 fours during his 121-ball 110, and put up a mammoth 163 runs for the third wicket with Shayan Jahangir, who scored 85 off 70 balls. The pair were dismissed in consecutive overs towards the end of the innings, but Kamran Ghulam smashed eight fours and two sixes during his unbeaten 32-ball 61 to take the visitors to 343 for 6 in 50 overs. The English bowlers were all expensive, Will Rhodes, the best of them, picking up 2 for 64.England, chasing nearly seven-an-over, stumbled to 31 for 2 after the first 10 as openers Jonathan Tattersall and Harry Finch fell to left-arm seamer Mohammad Aftab. Ryan Higgins, with an unbeaten 70 was the only batsman to offer resistance as Pakistan kept up the pressure.A 42-run stand between Higgins and Will Rhodes sought to restore the chase but Gohar snuck through the latter’s defences to wrest the advantage back. He also accounted for Lewis McManus and Miles Hammond in the 26th over as England slipped to 116 for 6. Hussain Talat, with 3 for 18, was an able deputy, polishing off the lower order as he and Gohar set up a comfortable win that gave Pakistan the trophy.

Injured Amla in doubt for third ODI

Hashim Amla is in severe doubt for the third ODI against Sri Lanka after sustaining a grade one tear to his left groin muscle, while fielding during the second match in Colombo. He did not bat on Tuesday after leaving the field in the 43rd over of Sri Lanka’s innings. Amla also missed the first match with muscles spasms in his neck.Fielding at fine leg, Amla pursued a ball off Dinesh Chandimal’s blade, and in his efforts to reel it in, leapt and fell hard on his left knee. He did not rise without help thereafter, and after receiving treatment on the boundary line, was helped gingerly back to the pavilion by a member of the team’s medical staff and a team-mate.”Injuries of this nature usually take three to seven days to recover, but he will receive intensive treatment and rehab in the coming days to give him the best possible chance of being ready for the third or fourth ODI in Kandy this week,” Mossajee said.South Africa are also missing Amla’s opening partner and regular captain Graeme Smith, due to injury, while spearhead Dale Steyn was also ruled out for the tour, as he recovers fully from a side strain.Sri Lanka meanwhile will have captain Angelo Mathews back for the remaining ODIs, after he completed his suspension for a slow over rate in the West Indies. The hosts have their own injury worry, with Lahiru Thirimanne nursing a sore thumb after being hit there during the second match, but is not expected to miss a game. The third ODI will be played in Pallekele on Friday, and the fourth on Sunday at the same venue. South Africa are 2-0 down in the series.

Easy win keeps Glamorgan alive

Glamorgan gave themselves a fighting chance of qualifying for the Yorkshire Bank 40 semi-finals after easing to a 68-run win over Leicestershire at Swansea.

Glamorgan now have to beat Yorkshire at Headingley in their final Group C match on Monday and hope other results go their way to make the last four.In front of a big crowd, Glamorgan cracked 303 for 6 from their 40 overs with Chris Cooke top scoring with 85 from 76 balls. In reply Leicestershire could only make 235 for 6 with Niall O’Brien making 92.For Glamorgan there were also useful contributions from Murray Goodwin, who struck 48 from 19 balls, including four sixes and Mark Wallace and Gareth Rees. The only Leicestershire bowler to emerge with credit was off spinner James Sykes, who claimed 2 for 37 from his eight overs.Glamorgan, who won the toss, were given a positive start by Wallace and Rees who amassed 84 in the opening 12 overs – 60 from the opening eight-over Powerplay – before Wallace was bowled by Ben Raine. Cooke and Rees continued the good opening, reaching 100 in the 17th over. But with the total on 148 Rees went leg before to Sykes, who struck again to have Jim Allenby caught at shot extra-cover.Cooke reached his 50 from 49 balls and struck Rob Taylor over midwicket for six as Glamorgan reached the 200-mark in the 32nd over.Glamorgan lost captain Marcus North caught behind but that heralded Goodwin’s productive innings. He began with a four and glance for six over deep square-leg, followed by a lofted off-drive for six before Cooke was caught at long-off off Raine.Goodwin carried on his assault hitting a no-ball from Raine for six and then scooping a four to long-leg, before clipping Shiv Thakor for yet another maximum. He seemed on course to equal the record of Stewart Walters, who posted a 19-ball fifty against Lancashire in 2011 at Colwyn Bay, but in looking for a six he was caught on the deep midwicket boundary off Nathan Buck.Leicestershire suffered a major blow in their reply when they lost captain Josh Cobb in only the second over after being caught behind off Jim Allenby. In the next over Greg Smith was also caught behind, this time off Michael Hogan, to leave Leicestershire struggling on 12 for 2.In trying to push the score along Ned Eckersley was bowled by Allenby as the visitors further slipped to 28 for 3. That became 53 for 4 when off-spinner Andrew Salter bowled Thakor. By the halfway stage of their Leicestershire had limped to 68 for 4 needing 11.75-an-over.O’Brien reached his 50, but from 84 balls with only two fours, and he was followed to the landmark by Michael Thornley from 53 balls with a six and four fours before he holed out to midwicket five overs from the end. O’Brien perished eight short of his century caught at mid-on off Allenby, who finished with figures of 3 for 37.

Another all-too-easy victory for India

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma helped India cruise home with a century stand•Associated Press

India have had little to complain about on this tour. The series was sealed at the earliest possible opportunity, and their other target of trying out some fringe players is also working well. Ambati Rayudu made a big contribution on his debut, another new face Jaydev Unadkat was the bowling star in the second ODI and the third India player to debut this series, Mohit Sharma, turned in an impressive performance as Zimbabwe were rolled over for 144 in the fourth ODI.One of their minor gripes could be that Cheteshwar Pujara’s much-awaited bow in limited-overs cricket didn’t go to plan, with Pujara inside-edging Tendai Chatara for 13. They would have also liked this second-string squad to have been tested more by Zimbabwe, who have been disappointingly limp, rarely putting India under pressure. In Harare, Zimbabwe’s batsmen could at least fall back on the excuse that the new balls curved around extravagantly in the first hour but even against the easier conditions in Bulawayo they came up short. Zimbabwe’s troubles were highlighted by the first ball itself, as Mohit served up a beauty that beat Vusi Sibanda and zipped perilously close to the top of the stumps.Mohit has played only six domestic one-dayers so far, but he showed no nerves in his opening over as he delivered an inswinger, outswinger and a bouncer, all with superb control. He beat the inside-edge and the outside-edge regularly in his opening spell, and even showed off the back-of-the-hand slower ball which served him so well in his spotlight-grabbing IPL season this year.As ever, Zimbabwe’s openers were cagey at the start, with Sibanda taking 16 deliveries to get off the mark. Mohit, with the experience of only six domestic one-dayers, showed no nerves as he maintained a tight line and length with the new ball, before his persistent probing was rewarded with the wicket of Sikandar Raza, nicking through to the keeper.Zimbabwe then began to be more adventurous despite the disciplined bowling, with Hamilton Masakadza effortlessly whipping Mohammed Shami over square leg for six. Just as the partnership was developing, Ravindra Jadeja’s accurate arm struck again, with a bullet throw to the stumps that left Masakadza repenting attempting a quick single. The introduction of spin hampered Zimbabwe further, as Jadeja extended Brendan Taylor’s horror run. Taylor hasn’t been in form this year, and was mortified to be adjudged lbw for a duck to a delivery that was clearly sliding down. In the next over, Jaydev Unadkat knocked over Sean Williams’ off stump after the batsman missed a straight one. When Jadeja removed the opener Sibanda in the 16th over, Zimbabwe were in serious trouble and India’s most dangerous bowler of the series, Amit Mishra, hadn’t come on to bowl yet.Elton Chigumbura has been Zimbabwe’s most successful batsman this series, and once again he was called on to right things after the specialist batsmen floundered. With the help of Malcolm Waller, he defied India for over 20 overs, generally playing it safe though there were some eye-catching strokes like the powerful loft over Mishra’s head for four. Waller also took his time before latching on to the loose deliveries on offer, like a flighted full toss from Mishra that was swatted for four. With the batting Powerplay taken, Waller swung a shortish ball from Shami for six and Zimbabwe looked for a late flourish. There was no late flourish, however, as Mohit returned to break the 80-run stand, getting Waller to edge behind. The innings didn’t last too long after that as Zimbabwe’s tail was clueless against Mishra, but it lasted long enough for Chigumbura to complete a well-made half-century.Zimbabwe’s 144 was never going to be much of a challenge for India, who took their time in completing the win. Pujara departed early, and the team management wisely decided against sending in the in-form Virat Kohli, giving Suresh Raina the chance to spend some time in the middle. Rohit Sharma has also had a lean run in this series, and he cashed in at a venue which must rank among his favourites – his only two previous innings for India at the Queens Sports Club were centuries. He added an unbeaten 64 to that, and Raina too helped himself to a half-century as the pair put on 122 to complete another all-too-easy victory for India.

Gunaratne, Lakmal star in Basnahira win

Janaka Gunaratne’s confident 40 from 31 powered Basnahira Greens to a challenging 139 for 6 on a slow Premadasa surface, before their bowlers ensured a 14-run win over Uthura Yellows in the Super4s T20 tournament in Colombo

Janaka Gunaratne’s confident 40 from 31 powered Basnahira Greens to a challenging 139 for 6 on a slow Premadasa surface, before their bowlers ensured a 14-run win over Uthura Yellows in the Super4s T20 tournament in Colombo.Gunaratne arrived with his side struggling at 43 for 3 in the ninth over, after being put in to bat by Uthura. However, he quickly set about accumulating runs along with Dimuth Karunaratne, who took a cautious approach as wickets fell around him. Gunaratne struck two sixes off Jeevan Mendis in the 13th over to get the innings going, but lost Karunaratne after the opener went for a big shot against Akila Dananjaya in the 14th over.Left-arm spinner Sohan Boralessa was Uthura’s early strike weapon, conceding only 14 from his first 3 overs and dismissing Dilshan Munaweera and Angelo Mathews. But the spinner ended badly, giving away 19 runs in the 15th over, his last of the match. Shaminda Eranga had Gunaratne out to a hook before the batsman reached 50, but Kithuruwan Vithanage and Kosala Kulasekara ensured the final overs were fruitful, scoring 22 and 15, respectively.Uthura began with an assured 45-run stand between Mahela Udawatte and Ashan Priyanjan, but boundaries proved elusive after the openers fell, and the required rate kept climbing. Captain Dinesh Chandimal made 19 from 20 balls, and Jeevan Mendis 19 from 23, leaving Thisara Perera with plenty to do when he arrived in the 16th over.Perera had been in fine batting touch in the Twenty20s against South Africa, and he began well, gathering 17 off his first 6 deliveries. However, he fell to a mis-hit off a low full toss from Suranga Lakmal to long-off, taking the side’s chances of a victory with him. The Basnahira bowlers finished with good economy rates, while Lakmal was the leading wicket-taker with 3 for 20.
