Jordan Clark, a 22-year-old Lancashire batsman who has yet to make his first-class debut, earned himself a place in cricket history by hitting Yorkshire left-arm spinner Gurman Randhawa for six sixes in an over during a 2nd XI match in Scarborough. The feat came on the second day of the contest as Clark latched onto Randhawa’s 13th over and struck all his blows over the midwicket area. His modest response to the achievement was to say that he thought the time had come “to step it up a little.” Until the point of the 36-run over, Randhawa had figures of 2 for 15 in 12 overs.Although Clark’s striking did not come in a top-level match it had him being mentioned in the same breath as Garry Sobers, Ravi Shastri, Yuvraj Singh and Herschelle Gibbs who have achieved the rare full house of sixes in first-class, List A or Twenty20 cricket.”I hit the first few pretty well, had a chat to my team-mate, and I just carried on really,” he told BBC Sport. “I just remember feeling a bit of pressure on the last ball and thinking ‘I have got to have a crack’.”Clark, who was part of Lancashire’s 2nd XI Trophy-winning team last year, has so far been restricted to one-day and Twenty20 appearances for the first team having joined the club’s academy in 2008.He was not the only fringe county batsman to launch a barrage of sixes on Wednesday as Middlesex’s Adam Rossington, playing against Cambridge MCCU, hit five consecutive sixes in an over against Akbar Ansari although Rossington was never in with a chance of matching Clark as the over had begun with a dot ball. He did, however, strike the next ball he faced from Ansari in the following over for another six.

A partida será disputada no Morumbi.

Lancashire report heavy loss for 2012

Lancashire have announced a fourth consecutive year of heavy losses, £1.5 million for 2012

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Apr-2013Lancashire have announced a fourth consecutive year of heavy losses, £1.5 million for 2012, as the impact of their ground redevelopment problems, which included lengthy legal battles, continues to be felt. However, the club are confident that with the Ashes returning to Old Trafford this year, work on the ground nearing the end of the latest stage, and the recent naming agreement with Emirates, that the financial results will show an improvement from next year.Lee Morgan, the club’s finance director, said: “When we embarked on this journey back in 2007 with the creation of our detailed business plan, we knew we had many obstacles to overcome; however, nobody could have foreseen how high, and how many there were going to be, much of which is well documented.”Rebuilding nearly an entire stadium on an existing site whilst still trading throughout is fraught with risk and stacked with difficulty, but was absolutely necessary to protect the history, the heritage and most importantly the future of this great venue.”Lancashire’s figures for 2012 were hit by one of the wettest summers on record, which impacted many counties, with key Friends Life t20 fixtures at Old Trafford being washed out, while the Twenty20 against South Africa was also struck. In comparison to 2011 when they won the County Championship, there was also a shortfall of more than half a million in prize money.”The loss is again substantial,” chairman Michael Cairns told the Manchester Evening News. “However, as forecasted last year, it is broadly in line with our expectations.”Over the past four years we have suffered more than our fair share of unanticipated hurdles and costly interruptions to our development project. While this is often the case with multi-faceted construction programmes, it’s reasonable to say that some of our challenges have been far from the norm.”In addition, the serious fall off in paid attendances in all forms of domestic cricket, and most recently the T20 international, has all impacted significantly on the club’s finances.”Although Old Trafford will host an Ashes clash this year, Cairns warned that any season when they are not awarded a Test – such as 2015 – will be difficult for the club which has tried to diversify its sources of income with a profitable events business built around The Point development next to the pavilion.”Any year in which we are not allocated one of the major Tests will be a tight financial year, with 2015 being our next challenge in this respect,” Cairns said. “My belief is that an unhealthy number of clubs will be facing extremely difficult financial times, especially if the level of ECB distributions were to be significantly reduced.”

E A SELEÇÃO BRASILEIRA, PATO?

Porterfield leads manic chase

ScorecardIreland comfortably beat United Arab Emirates by six wickets, in the one-off T20 match held at Sharjah. Ireland elected to field first, putting UAE under pressure straight away when Bakthiyar Palekar was dismissed by Paul Stirling in the first over. Tim Murtagh would inflict damage as he accounted for Amjad Ali and Salman Faris, leaving UAE to be reduced to 24 for 4 in the sixth over.A 49-run stand between Swapnil Patil and Rohan Mustafa attempted to steady the ship, but UAE continued to lose wickets in regular intervals. UAE stuttered to 122 for 9 at the completion of their quota of overs. Murtagh was impressive with his 3 for 11, and was ably supported by the efforts of both George Dockrell and Stirling, who picked up two wickets each.William Porterfield and Stirling led an eventual run chase early on as they were going at above ten an over in the first couple of overs. The two batsmen put up 54 for the first wicket, before Stirling was dismissed off Mustafa. Porterfield stayed on to anchor the innings, striking seven boundaries, including three sixes, as he finished with 58. Gary Wilson and Kevin O’Brien played the finishing role as Ireland chased down UAE’s total in the 19th over.

Essex look to Cook for assistance

Graham Napier gave Essex a first-innings lead with a lower-order half-century to put his side on top at Chelmsford

David Hopps at Chelmsford30-Apr-2013
ScorecardGraham Napier made an invaluable 74 from No. 9•Getty ImagesSuch is the professionalism of the England team these days that there has never been a higher expectation that when England players return to their county sides in the Championship, they will deliver. That was certainly the case for Joe Root in Yorkshire’s victory at Durham and here, Essex need Alastair Cook to bring some stability to their season.Cook’s status, as England’s captain, could hardly be more proven. He strolls around Chelmsford with an easy charm which tells of achievements already secured and challenges to come. Essex value his presence all the same as they seek to arrest a disturbing start to the season.Halfway through this match, Hampshire, strongly fancied for promotion, have edged to a lead of 20 runs, their second innings creeping along at two-an-over. They lost Michael Carberry and Jimmy Adams to David Masters’ new-ball spell, Carberry falling to a fast catch by Ben Foakes off the meat of the bat at forward short leg.It would be understandable if Essex, an innings defeat against Northamptonshire still fresh in the mind, are already hankering after Cook to produce a matchwinning response in the fourth innings. He will be back with England in a flash, but at the moment temporary assistance is welcome.Cook batted in an orderly fashion as if intent upon gently attuning his mind to the approaching demands of two back-to-back Ashes series. He proceeded without much ado for more than four hours – 176 balls for 59 – before James Tomlinson found a little swing around leg stump and had him lbw.”It’s been Alastair at his most restrained,” observed one Essex member as she gazed over the sunlit River Cam at lunchtime. The observation came with a wistful sigh as if she would like to mother him. She sounded like a proud parent, recognising that her offspring had grown up and gone on to better things, but half wishing she could have held back the clock. At 73 for 6, Essex were in a pickle, the score doing little for the well-being of Paul Grayson, the coach, who was unwell. But Cook stayed on long enough to add a few appealing condiments. The bracing ingredients came, though, from Graham Napier, who struck 74 from 105 balls to give Essex a useful first-innings lead of 57. Their last four wickets added 181.Napier lost his T20 world record for six-hitting last week when Chris Gayle struck 17 in one knock in his IPL rampage for Royal Challengers Bangalore. Napier had hit 16 for Essex against Sussex Sharks in 2008 and Essex actually delayed a practice session at Northampton to watch Gayle take his record.Napier felt obliged to pronounce himself “a bit gutted”, which is presumably even worse than gutted, on the grounds that some of the bones are left in, but he is an easy-going, uncomplicated sort who will not fret that he has lost part of his place in cricket history – he still jointly holds the first-class record for most sixes in an innings. He found the going strikingly easier than anybody (at least until Tim Phillips hit with gusto for 40 from at No. 10), although there was only one six, a pick-up over midwicket off the left-arm spinner Danny Briggs.Over lunch the first sun warning of the summer was given on the Chelmsford public address. These are routinely made on county grounds whenever the temperature creeps above about 14 degrees. No sooner was the announcement made than the sun went in and a chill wind took hold again. Such warnings are probably just as well when Cook bats because famously he never sweats and could presumably create a misleading impression. It is a wonder Health & Safety have not banned him because of it.

Swann confident of Ashes return

Two weeks after a second elbow operation, Graeme Swann says he will be fit for the Ashes and even wonders whether he could be playing at 40

Only two weeks after undergoing surgery for the second time on his troublesome right elbow, Graeme Swann is not only confident of being fit for his third Ashes series later this summer but has also revealed a vague ambition to rival a fellow England offspinner, John Emburey, for career longevity.Indeed, Swann, who turned 34 four days ago, is so optimistic about making a full recovery that he believes he could be ready to play in the opening Test against New Zealand on May 16. Nottinghamshire’s four-day match against Durham on April 29 has even been pencilled in for what would be a startlingly quick competitive comeback.Swann went ahead of Jim Laker as England’s most prolific Test offspinner during the triumphant England series in India that preceded the New Zealand tour. He now has 212 Test wickets yet claims his hunger for more is undiminished.”The hunger’s still strong to play Test cricket,” he said “I love the game, so I think I’ll play for as long as the body can stand it. Whether that will be for 12 Test matches or 112 we will have to wait and see – but Embers played until he was 41, didn’t he? So there is hope for me yet.”Swann is currently following a day-and-night programme of mechanically-induced extension exercises designed to accelerate his recovery time.”I’m banished to our attic bedroom right now because I have to get up every two hours to attach myself to a machine for 50 minutes,” Swann said. “It was agony for the first week – it brings a tear to your eye. But that’s stopped happening now and the elbow feels great — so it’s definitely going in the right direction.”I’ll be badgering the physios and coaches here at Notts to let me bowl as soon as possible but they’re the ones with qualifications to tell me when and where I can.”I’d hope to be bowling competitively by the end of April. I don’t know whether that’s optimistic or not but that’s how my mind works. I want to be back as soon as I can because I’m bored stupid already. It was okay while the Tests in New Zealand were on because I could watch that, but now it’s finished it’s very tedious.”It’s important though because the machine keeps the range of movement in your arm and it aids your rehabilitation and it’s supposed to halve the time you get back bowling.”If his return to action with Nottinghamshire results in no setback, Swann would be in contention for the opening Test against New Zealand at Lord’s, having missed England’s uncomfortable 0-0 Test series draw against the same opponents on their own pitches. It would be great news for England, who would be uneasy about entering as Ashes series with Monty Panesar as their frontline spinner, particularly given the high number of left-hand batsmen in the Australian line-up. Panesar was in buoyant form as he and Swann dismantled India on turning surfaces before Christmas, but as the lone spinner on unresponsive surfaces in New Zealand he occasionally looked ill at ease.Doubts were expressed over Swann’s future in international cricket after his elbow injury resurfaced – slightly more than three years after his first operation under the skilled hands of surgeon Dr Shawn O’Driscoll in Minnesota.Yet he says he trusts O’Driscoll’s prognosis of a full recovery and the thought has never seriously crossed his mind that the injury might spell the end of his England career after 50 Tests.”The surgeon assured me it was a straightforward operation compared with my first one,” he said. “That one was far more serious, yet it allowed me to go for three-and-a-half years bowling relatively pain free. It was a lot more straightforward this time, basically just correcting little things that have gone wrong since.”Because of my elbow, different parts of my body start taking over and aching and that was one of the signs in New Zealand that something was wrong. All of a sudden I was getting a sore back and shoulder and all sorts of things, all down to the fact that the elbow wasn’t working. Now it’s cleared out, all the other things should be all right.”I think I could bowl now but I’d probably put myself back to square one. So the next couple of weeks are solely about fitness and getting my base levels back up to where they should be, and then I’ll start bowling again.”Swann recognises that he is not the patient sort and any delay in his rehabilitation will leave him pacing the floor in frustration.”I think it’s going to kill me if I sit down and watch so much cricket at the start of the summer without being an active part of it so I’ll certainly be trying to be back fit and playing as much cricket as I can. I’d like to get a couple of games in for Notts before any England cricket starts so that’s what I’ll be aiming for.”If I start back and there’s any pain whatsoever I’m sure I’ll want to play it fairly safe. But I’m not a conservative bloke by nature.”

Lyth calms Yorkshire in chase

Adam Lyth’s unbeaten half-century carried Yorkshire to a five-wicket win over the Unicorns in a close Yorkshire Bank 40 match at Chesterfield

19-May-2013
ScorecardAdam Lyth’s unbeaten half-century carried Yorkshire to a five-wicket win over the Unicorns in a close Yorkshire Bank 40 match at Chesterfield.Rich Pyrah took 3 for 34 as Yorkshire restricted their hosts to 189 for 9, Aneurin Norman top-scoring with a rapid 38 not out from No. 9. But Yorkshire then slipped to 24 for 2 and 88 for 4 and looked to be progressing too slowly, until Lyth produced a late barrage of boundaries to take them to their target with seven balls to spare. The Unicorns chose to bat after winning the toss, but lost openers Tom New and Tom Lancefield to Steven Patterson in the seventh over to leave them 22 for 2. Michael O’Shea made 26 and put on 42 with Garry Park before both were dismissed in the same Pyrah over, and another pair of wickets fell on 103 as Adil Rashid removed Scott Elstone and Vishal Tripathi in successive balls.Captain Keith Parsons made 28 before being run out by Lyth, and Glenn Querl scored 23 at close to a run a ball but was then bowled by Ryan Sidebottom. But it was Norman who lifted his side to a competitive total, smashing four fours and a six in a 26-ball effort.Warren Lee removed Pyrah and Andrew Gale in successive overs before Yorkshire rebuilt with a stand of 56 between Phil Jacques and Gary Ballance. The pattern of the day, with wickets falling in pairs, continued as Norman had Jaques caught by Parsons and Ballance, six short of a half-century, was bowled by Luke Beaven.Lyth found an ally in the in-form Rashid, who contributed 32 to a stand of 55 before becoming Beaven’s second victim. Lyth had scored the more slowly of the pair and was also outpaced by Andrew Hodd’s run-a-ball scoring rate in the early part of their sixth-wicket alliance. But having made only 24 from his first 46 deliveries, Lyth then cracked 34 from his next 14 – with five fours and two sixes – to secure Yorkshire’s first victory in the competition.
