Last week, Mumbai Indians (MI) had straightjacketed the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) batters on an atypically slow surface at the Wankhede Stadium. On Wednesday, they did the same in the reverse fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, cantering to a seven-wicket win after keeping SRH to 143 for 8.Getting to that total was an achievement for SRH after they had slumped to 35 for 5, with Heinrich Klaasen hauling them to something like respectability with a superb 71 off 44 balls. Moderately respectable as the total may have been, it was far from enough to put pressure on MI, who raced to victory with 26 balls remaining, with Rohit Sharma continuing his return to form with a second successive half-century.Related

The defining performances of the match came from Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar, who picked up two new-ball wickets each as SRH slumped to the lowest powerplay score of the season, 24 for 4. They were in danger of collapsing to a double-digit total when they lost their fifth wicket in the ninth over, but Klaasen and Impact Player Abhinav Manohar ensured that didn’t happen, putting on 99 for the sixth wicket in 63 balls.The damage had already been done, though, as 144 proved to be no challenge at all for an MI team that seems to be building ominous momentum after the customary slow start to their season. After winning just one of their first five games of IPL 2025, they have now won four out of four.SRH, meanwhile, are second from bottom with just two wins in eight games. They took a net run-rate hit too; theirs is now -1.361, only marginally better than bottom-placed Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) -1.392.

Boult and Chahar set the game up

The early exchanges set the tone, with both Chahar and Boult swinging the new ball while also benefitting from the ball stopping on the surface. Conditions still weren’t as tricky as SRH’s top-order slump made them look, though; both Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were caught while going hard at the ball, slicing shots they were early on, while Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped a drive to mid-on.The defining moment of SRH’s top-order collapse, however, was the wicket of Ishan Kishan, who was out to a leg-side strangle for the second time this season. He began walking even though no MI player made a genuine appeal, and Ultra Edge proceeded to rub more salt in SRH’s wounds, showing no spike as ball passed bat.1:28

When Hardik Pandya made it 35 for 5 with an offcutter-bouncer that got big on Aniket Verma, SRH had no option but to make early use of their Impact Player and bring on an extra batter, Manohar.It was Klaasen who did all the heavy lifting, though, particularly early on in the sixth-wicket partnership. Left-arm wristspinner Vignesh Puthur helped him spark the innings to life with a series of long-hops in the tenth over, and Klaasen helped himself to a six and two fours. Fifteen came off that over, and 16 off the next, bowled by Hardik.Klaasen went on to play a number of sensational shots – none better than a reverse-scooped six off Jasprit Bumrah in the 19th over – but thanks to SRH’s circumstances, his innings was necessarily one of restraint, as a control percentage of 86 suggested. The risks he took were measured ones, off marginal errors in line and length from MI’s bowlers. That he still finished with a 160-plus strike rate was a testament to his quality, with Manohar’s 43 off 37 balls and the scores of SRH’s other batters putting his innings in context.Mitchell Santner, varying his pace and seam orientation cleverly while keeping the stumps in play as much as possible, made the best of SRH’s self-imposed restraint, conceding just 19 runs – and just one four – in his four overs.Klaasen and Manohar gave SRH the push they needed at the death, as 35 came from overs 17 to 19. But the finish was muted. Bumrah dismissed Klaasen with a full-toss off the last ball of the 19th, and Boult came back to end the innings with a double-wicket 20th.One of them was another unusual dismissal, a rare hit-wicket. He sneaked a yorker past Manohar and hit the stumps, but the batter, sitting deep in his crease, had already disturbed the stumps while trying to bring his bat down to keep the ball out.1:43

SRH had replaced Mohammed Shami – who had endured a difficult season, picking up just five wickets in seven games at 52.20 while conceding 10.87 runs per over – with Jaydev Unadkat, and the left-arm quick marked his return with an early wicket, getting Ryan Rickelton caught-and-bowled in the second over of MI’s chase with another ball that stopped on the surface.But whether because of dew or other reasons, the ball in general seemed to come on to the bat much better during the second innings. Even Pat Cummins’ offcutter into the pitch, such a potent weapon on slow surfaces, sat up to be hit here, with Rohit and Will Jacks pulling him for a six each in a 17-run third over.That set the tone for the rest of the powerplay, with MI scoring 56 for 1 in this phase, the highlight an effortless six over long-off from Rohit off Unadkat, with arms at full extension.Rohit came into this game having improved his scores with each innings, his first seven visits to the crease bringing him 0, 8, 13, 17, 18, 26 and 76*. He seemed on course to keep that sequence going, but fell against the run of play on 70, chipping an Eshan Malinga yorker to midwicket in the 15th over.MI only needed 14 off 32 at that point, though, and Suryakumar Yadav was already batting on 26, picking his spots and targeting them clinically. He finished the game with a flurry of boundaries, to end it unbeaten on 40 off just 19 balls. The final act of the match summed up the contest: a flat Suryakumar pull off Zeeshan Ansari could have been caught at deep square leg, only for Reddy to overrun the ball and let it run away to the boundary.

Apesar de ter ficado somente no empate com o São Caetano, em 1 a 1, a equipe dominou a partida, trocando 658 passes, de acordo com o Footstats. Apenas Ramiro, um dos reforços para 2019, acertou 98, mais que a metade de toda a equipe de Mirassol contra o São Paulo (193), por exemplo. O Fluminense, de Fernando Diniz, com 568, foi o segundo no quesito.

ARTILHARIA PESADA

O placar magro contra o Madureira – 1 a 0 – não refletiu bem a superioridade que o Vasco teve em sua estreia no Carioca. Entre os 12 grandes, a equipe foi a que mais finalizou corretamente, com 12 arremates em gol, e a que mais criou chances em bola trabalhada, com 22 assistências.

Individualmente, destaque para Danilo Barcelos, que criou nove chances de gols através de passes e cruzamentos, e para Ribamar, que além de cinco assistências, finalizou três vezes na direção do gol – e outras três para fora.

CHUVA DE GOLS

Se por um lado foi o Vasco quem criou e finalizou mais vezes entre os grandes, foi o Atlético Mineiro quem mais balançou as redes. A goleada por 5 a 0 sobre o Boa Esporte foi a maior goleada do fim de semana entre os clubes da elite. Ricardo Oliveira, com três gols, foi o principal artilheiro.

Grêmio e São Paulo também não economizaram na rodada. Os Tricolores marcaram quatro vezes cada, nas vitórias sobre Novo Hamburgo, por 4 a 0, e Mirassol, por 4 a 1, respectivamente.

ATAQUE AÉREO

O gol de cabeça de Rhodolfo foi o que deu a vitória ao Flamengo sobre o Bangu, de virada. E não foi um lance ao acaso. O Rubro-Negro Carioca foi, ao lado do Vasco, o time que mais acertou levantamentos para a área neste fim de semana, totalizando 12 cruzamentos certos.

Danilo Barcelos, do Vasco, com nove bolas alçadas, foi o líder do fundamento, seguido pelo flamenguista Éverton Ribeiro, autor do passe para o gol da vitória da equipe da Gávea, que concluiu quatro cruzamentos.

FORÇA DEFENSIVA

A melhor defesa é o ataque ou o melhor ataque é a defesa? Dono do saldo mais positivo do fim de semana, o Atlético Mineiro comandou também a estatística de desarmes. Com 25 roubos de bola, o Galo liderou com folga o quesito. O Santos, do técnico Jorge Sampaoli, foi em segundo, com 18.

O lateral-esquerdo Fabio Santos, do Atlético, foi o grande destaque individual, recuperando oito posses de bola para a sua equipe. Luan, também do Galo, e Alison, do Peixe, também obtiveram um bom desempenho.

NO TALENTO INDIVIDUAL

Após começar perdendo para o Mirassol, o São Paulo precisou partir para cima do adversário para conseguir virar o placar e terminar com uma clássica goleada de 4 a 1. E uma das armas para impedir o revés foi o drible.

O Tricolor foi o time que mais fez uso do fundamento nesta primeira rodada, realizando oito fintas corretas, segundo o Footstats. Os laterais Reinaldo e Bruno Peres, com dois dribles cada, foram os destaques da equipe no quesito. O Flamengo, com seis foi outro que fez bastante uso das jogadas individuais.

England quick could be ruled out of a potential red-ball return for England Lions against India

Although it initially appeared to be a minor issue, further assessments revealed ligament damage, and following the suspension of the tournament earlier this month, he did not return to India for this week’s resumption.He had initially been named in England’s 16-man squad for the ODI series that begins at Edgbaston on May 29, but will now be reassessed by the England medical team over the coming fortnight to determine when he may return to action.Lancashire’s left-arm seamer Luke Wood, who had already been named instead of Archer for the T20I series that follows in June, has been added to the squad in his place. Wood has played two previous ODIs in 2022-23, but has yet to take a wicket in the format.Archer’s omission from the T20I series had pointed to his probable inclusion in the second of England Lions’ two four-day matches against India that serve as warm-up matches next month’s five-Test series.The first, at Canterbury from May 30-June 2, runs concurrently with the ODI series, but the second, at Northampton from June 6-9, had been a realistic target for Archer, and could have constituted a first first-class appearance in more than four years, since a one-off appearance for Sussex versus Kent in May 2021.England’s selectors have subsequently named an initial 15-man squad for the two Lions matches, to be captained by Somerset’s James Rew and with the notable inclusion of Chris Woakes for his first matches of the season. How loyalties and allegiances change in the IPL. Anil Kumble’s association with Royal Challengers Bangalore was long and high-profile, as a player, captain, and mentor. He is known to have played a critical role in team strategy, selections, auction picks, all for a team representing his hometown. He is in the opposing camp now, hired by Mumbai Indians as their team mentor, and will have to plot against a side he helped strengthen over five seasons on his home ground.An immediate problem to address for Kumble’s team is the absence of Lasith Malinga from the opening game due to injury. A prized asset of the Mumbai side, Malinga is still recovering from a sore back he suffered during the home series against Bangladesh. His replacement apart, Mumbai can compensate for that loss with runs from a power-packed batting line-up, though it’ll be interesting to see if Sachin Tendulkar and his opening partner [there were as many as eight last season] are able to retain their combination for a good part of the season.The Royal Challengers are among the most passionately followed teams in the IPL and, for a tournament centred on the concept of city loyalties, Bangalore has lapped up its team like no other. But the title has proved elusive, despite twice having made the final. Led by Virat Kohli this season, Royal Challengers have as many as 15 seamers in their squad – though one of them, Zaheer Khan, is ruled out of the opening match with a side strain. It could be said that Kumble’s inputs may have made their job easier had he not switched over, but how they manage their personnel is one of several potential challenges this season could throw up.

Players to watch

Is Glenn Maxwell worth a million dollars? He was the only million-dollar buy at the 2013 auction, then had a lacklustre Test series in India, and didn’t have a great World Twenty20 before he was bought. His purchase is a gamble, and it remains to be seen to what extent his all-round skills are able to justify, or undermine, the team’s decision.From doing the moonwalk to gangnam style, classy celebrations to banter with opposition players, Chris Gayle has loosened up significantly since we first saw him in 1999 when he took on India in Toronto. His demeanour on the field aside, he has been a pivotal player for Royal Challengers with his explosive batting at the top, and has endeared himself to his fans, not just by treating them to airshows at the Chinnaswamy Stadium but winning their admiration despite giving them a bloody nose, literally, and landing them in hospital.

Gayle was the architect of a big win over Mumbai last season at the Wankhede Stadium, as Royal Challengers eased home by nine wickets. Mumbai then won a close game at the Chinnaswamy Stadium less than a week later, with Ambati Rayudu and Kieron Pollard guiding them to victory in a tight chase.

• Malinga is among the few bowlers to have kept Gayle quiet in the IPL. R Ashwin is another. Malinga has bowled 39 balls to Gayle in the IPL, conceding 36 runs that included five fours. Against Ashwin, Gayle has scored at a run a ball in the IPL – 33 off 33.
• At the very least, Gayle could become the second-highest run-getter in all T20 cricket. He is currently on 4804 runs, just 17 behind David Hussey. Brad Hodge leads the list with 5274.
