Lots of cheer as India win T20 World Cup for the Blind

India against Pakistan, in the final of the inaugural Twenty20 World Cup. No, we’re not talking Johannesburg 2007, but Bangalore 2012. This time, it was the inaugural T20 World Cup for the Blind, which India took by 29 runs. The 12-day tournament, comprising nine teams, signed-off with much fanfare. There was India’s national broadcaster, Doordarshan, on hand to telecast the match. There were cheerleaders and the customary T20 bugle call being blasted over the PA. There were radio jockeys with boundary-side updates, and there were local actors to add a dash of glamour and get the crowd going. And, most vitally, there a crowd to get going. A crowd that numbered around 4000.”I don’t think I’ll ever experience anything like this in my life again,” South Africa’s visually-impaired cricket team captain, Desigan Pillay, said, as the spectators launched into a chant. His team-mate, Hendrik Christiaan, backed him up: “Back home, your wife thinks you’re great. And, probably, your mum. But to see so many people here, creating such an atmosphere, it’s very encouraging.”Batting first on a Central College ground with a patchy outfield, India got to 258 for 8 – not a very intimidating total by blind cricket standards. At one point though, it looked like they might get much less. Enter Ketanbhai Patel, one of the four fully blind or B1 players in the XI (among the partially-sighted players, four are B2s – players who can see up to three metres – and the remaining three are B3s or those who can see up to six metres). As per the rules, B1 players have their scores doubled and so, when they click, they can make a huge difference for their team. Today, Ketanbhai clicked. He scored 98 off 43 balls, caught and bowled two short of a rare B1 century.Pakistan came into the final unbeaten, and are the only team to make it to the finals of all four global blind cricket tournaments to date – this one, and the three 40-overs World Cups before this. They won two of those titles, the most recent being a victory over India in Islamabad in 2006. This time round, though, the very vocal home crowd wasn’t behind them and the pressure seemed to get to Pakistan. They lost wickets in a hurry and the run outs in the innings showed that they were nervous.By the time the final over began, the game was over and the Indian fans knew it. Most left the shade of the (tents) surrounding the field, and crowded the boundary boards. The moment the final ball was bowled, and the 29-run win official, they spilled on to the field despite the best efforts of the volunteers and the police. Photographers with cameras flashing, schoolchildren draped with flags, physically challenged in wheelchairs … they were all out there. Some sprayed bottled coke on others, while the crackers went off in the background.Over the next hour, the Indian visually-impaired team was hugged and hoisted on shoulders and raucously celebrated. After the speeches – several of them – mementos were handed out to all the teams by former Sri Lanka captain Arjuna Ranatunga and former India wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani, among others. The star player of the tournament, India batsman Prakash Jairamaiah, was garlanded and India captain Shekhar Naik was handed the trophy. Of course, there were a few well-deserved cheques handed out too.

Eve Jones: 'Professionalism has taken my game to another level'

Opener targets England chance after starring for Phoenix and Sparks

Valkerie Baynes28-Sep-2021If any more evidence was needed – and it’s become abundantly clear this summer – of the positive knock-on effects from professionalising domestic women’s cricket in England, look no further than Eve Jones. The first uncapped cricketer to win a player-voted PCA award, cinch PCA Women’s Player of the Year Jones has gone from having to shoehorn her own training around a day job coaching in schools and clubs to fitting her sessions as a coach around the times she trains as a professional athlete. The difference has, in her words, been “massive”. After racking up 808 runs across the Hundred, Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy and Charlotte Edwards Cup, opening batter Jones secured her first WBBL contract, joining Melbourne Renegades for this year’s edition starting on October 14.”We’ve had a lot more time to dedicate to training,” said Jones, one of 41 women awarded domestic contracts for 2021. “We had a whole winter training with Sparks three, four times a week so I think that’s definitely had a massive impact on my game.”I’ve come into the season with a lot of confidence and I’ve had a lot of support and belief given to me by my team so that also helps. Being a professional cricketer has definitely taken my game to another level.”Jones, 29, was speaking following the 52nd cinch PCA Awards, the biggest awards ceremony in English cricket. She is also the PCA Women’s Overall Domestic MVP and the Charlotte Edwards Cup Player of the Year.Playing for Central Sparks, Jones was the leading run-scorer in the Charlotte Edwards Cup with 276 runs at an average of 55.20 and third-highest on the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy charts with 299 runs at 42.71.Jones also scored 233 runs for Birmingham Phoenix in the Hundred at an average of 29.12 and with a strike rate of 118.27, making her the tournament’s fourth-highest run-scorer. Ahead of her were international stars Dane van Niekerk and Jemimah Rodrigues and rising England batter Sophia Dunkley, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season and who was shortlisted for the Women’s Player of the Year award alongside Jones, England vice-captain Nat Sciver and Danielle Gibson of Western Storm.Eve Jones slashes over backward point•Getty Images

Jones, who boarded a plane to Australia on Monday, hoped the WBBL would provide another shop window for her to press a long-held ambition to one day play for England.”I’ve always had aspirations of playing for England and if I can keep performing and winning games for my teams, then hopefully that’ll give me an edge to try and break into that England squad,” Jones said.”It’s very difficult to break into because there’s some fantastic players in there. That’s all I could do at the end of the day, keep on improving and keep putting in performances.”Hopefully the Big Bash will give me more assistance, if I can keep performing in that and on the big stage.”Jones admits frustration at not yet earning an international call-up.”I’d say there is a little bit of frustration there,” Jones said. “I can only keep doing what I’m trying to do and perform and score runs and help my team win.”It’s a really difficult team to break into so I’m just trying to make sure that I’m ready if and when I get picked. The competitions that are available for us to play in and putting it on the big stage in front of thousands of people should hold me in good stead if I do get that England call.”As if to exacerbate her frustrations, England experimented with a long batting line-up in the recently completed tour by New Zealand, where the hosts struggled with a misfiring middle order.Related

Tammy Beaumont is a lock as opener as England prepare for the Ashes, starting in late January, and their World Cup defence in March, having come through a lean ODI series against New Zealand to post a dominant century in the fifth and final match.Lauren Winfield-Hill struggled to convert starts opening alongside Beaumont in eight ODIs against India and New Zealand over the summer, with T20 opener Danni Wyatt enjoying success after moving into the ODI middle order.Even if she does not earn selection for the Ashes, Jones can aim for a place on the accompanying England A tour of Australia.”I feel like I’m just coming into the peak of my career,” Jones said. “If I get selected on that tour and if I can perform in that then you’re always in a good position then to get called up to the squad.”

Dhoni helps India draw level with crushing win

MS Dhoni led the way with the bat and in the field as India condemned England to a 127-run defeat to make it 1-1 in the five-match series

The Report by David Hopps15-Jan-2013
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMS Dhoni fired India to a total that proved far too good for England•BCCIKochi, in tourist terms at least, is the gateway to the backwaters but India, 1-0 down in the ODI series with four to play, were in no mood to take that journey. MS Dhoni, impassioned not just with the bat but just as strikingly in every aspect of his captaincy, made that abundantly clear with every muscle flexed and every order barked and it was England who were sunk without trace in a 127-run defeat.England’s pursuit of 286 always looked a daunting task and it became an improbable one from the moment that Bhuvneshwar Kumar removed Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan in the space of three balls in an outstanding new-ball spell. There is nothing like a humid evening in Kochi to perk up a swing bowler and Bhuvneshwar, a 22-year-old from Uttar Pradesh playing in only his fifth ODI, also summoned impressive stamina as Dhoni ran his 10-over spell through without interruption and was rewarded with his best international figures of 3 for 29.But the match had swung India’s way much earlier than that – and it was Dhoni, a captain deemed to be under pressure, and Ravindra Jadeja who were at the heart of it. England had sensed they held an element of control, at the very least, for much of India’s innings but 108 runs from the last 10 overs, 68 from the last five, shook that notion to the core.As so often, Dhoni was left to plot a route to victory, wresting control from England’s attack with 72 from 66 balls. He creates his own virtuous circle, creating a febrile atmosphere and then feeding off it, in turn causing a crowd of around 70,000 to roar with even greater intensity. He fell four balls from the end of the innings when he sliced Dernbach to Joe Root at deep cover – a suitable end because Dernbach’s unwavering policy of bowling wide to him outside off stump had been England’s most effective counter.India approached the last 10 overs in unconvincing shape, at 177 for 5, having been confounded in the batting Powerplay by the variations of Dernbach and Steven Finn, which conceded only 21 runs in five overs and dismissed their batting mainstay, Suresh Raina, in the process.Dhoni had failed to manage India’s run chase in Rajkot, holing out at long-off against Dernbach’s slower ball. He received a near-replica in the closing overs but this time his hands were fast and his brain quicksilver and he muscled it well beyond the boundary rope. It was a statement about how things would be different this time. What Dhoni stirred, Jadeja delivered, rounding things off by taking 14 from Dernbach’s last three deliveries to finish with an unbeaten 61 from 37 balls. They were impressive statistics for a batsman who had been overshadowed until the last. As for Dernbach, for all his relative success against Dhoni, he still spilled 73 from nine overs.Smart stats

The margin of victory – 127 runs – is the second-highest for India in ODIs against England.

England’s score of 158 is their third-lowest all-out total in ODIs against India.

India’s Nos. 5, 6 and 7 all scored half-centuries, only the fifth time this has ever happened in ODIs, and the first such instance for India.

The 96-run stand between MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja came at a run-rate of 9.60 per over, the fourth-best rate for a 50-plus stand for India against England. The top three such stands for the sixth wicket for India versus England all involve Dhoni and Jadeja.

Jadeja’s strike rate of 164.86 (61 off 37 balls) is the fourth-highest for a 50-plus score by an Indian against England.

Since the 2011 World Cup, Dhoni has averaged 83.28 at a strike rate of 92.39, with 11 fifty-plus scores in 27 innings.

Dhoni averages 57.78 in 118 ODI innings as captain. His average is the highest among captains who’ve batted at least 15 innings.

For Chris Woakes, who was playing his first ODI in India after his late inclusion for the injured Tim Bresnan, it was an examination far beyond anything he had ever experienced. He thought he had Dhoni caught at the wicket when he had made 6 from nine balls but it was impossible for the umpire Vineet Kulkarni to hear a nick in such a din and normal-speed TV replays, which were all that were shown, made things no clearer.Raina had made 55 from 78 balls before he dragged on a pull at Finn and departed bashing the peak of his helmet with his bat in frustration, just as Virat Kohil had done earlier when he flayed Woakes to the cover boundary. Raina prospered primarily against the offspin of James Tredwell, two slog sweeps for six representing the highlight of his innings, and ensured that Tredwell, who took four wickets in the opening ODI in Rajkot, did not repeat the mayhem. As for England’s bonus allrounder in the opening match, Joe Root, who bowled nine overs relatively unscathed, there was no encore.India’s opening pair did not survive long, Gautam Gambhir and Ajinkya Rahane both departing by the fifth over. Finn and Dernbach, also impressive with the new ball, had clamoured for several lbw appeals before they prospered by hitting the stumps.Dernbach’s nip-backer to bowl Gambhir through the gate was a delivery made to order. There are few more productive, or less convincing, shots in ODIs than Gambhir’s dab through gully for four, bat hanging away from his body and he had played it the previous ball much to the bowler’s frustration. The ball that cut back was the classic retort. Finn also brought a delivery back in his next over, late inswing accounting for Rahane as he shuffled across his crease.India’s frustration grew when Yuvraj Singh fell to an erroneous lbw decision by Steve Davis, who did not see – and, like Kulkarni in the case of Dhoni, certainly could not hear in such a deafening atmosphere – a deflection off the glove as he swept at Tredwell. With no DRS in use, Yuvraj had to take his punishment, although he did not do so without a stray comment or two.So, for that matter, did Alastair Cook in England’s reply, with Bhuvneshwar fortunate to win an lbw decision with a delivery that pitched outside leg stump. Cook should have been run out on 17 when Jadeja failed to pick up cleanly at midwicket to take advantage of complete confusion between Pietersen and Cook over a leg-side single. Dhoni’s annoyance was clear, but Bhuvneshwar’s eighth over had an impact on the course of the match and the captain’s mood.First Pietersen (42 from 44 balls) was bowled by one that jagged back as he sought to run into the off side and two balls later Bhuvneshwar found movement away from the left-handed Morgan from a good length and Dhoni dived to claim one his finest catches against England this winter, in what has been a somewhat troubled wicketkeeping sequence.England, four down for 74 by the 17th over, had much rebuilding to do. But the ball turned for India’s spinners and it was jerry-built stuff. Craig Kieswetter and Joe Root assessed a while then both got out, Kieswetter unimpressively as he pushed a short ball from R Ashwin to midwicket, Root sliced apart by Jadeja’s arm ball. Woakes’ managed a second-ball duck – another Jadeja arm ball to enhance his excellent match -and England’s tail quickly subsided, in no doubt about the extent of the challenge ahead.

Pakistan's tour of West Indies to be split

Pakistan’s tour of the West Indies in July 2013 is likely to be split into two parts in order to accommodate the PCB’s plan of hosting India in August for a series that is yet to be confirmed. Pakistan were due to play two Tests, five ODIs and two Twenty20s in the Caribbean in June and July but now they will only play either Tests or limited-overs matches to create a window for India.According to the FTP, West Indies are scheduled to host Pakistan from the last week in June to the last week in July but they also have a tri-series against India and Sri Lanka during that time. To avoid the clash with Pakistan, the WICB had asked the PCB if their Caribbean tour could be rescheduled to August. That, however, would interfere with the PCB’s hopes of hosting India, so Pakistan’s West Indies tour had to be split.ESPNcricinfo understands that after the upcoming limited-over series in India starting on December 25, the PCB is hoping to invite India to play another series in Pakistan.”The limited-over series isn’t [just] what we wanted,” a PCB official said. “We wanted long-term bonding with India on reciprocal basis, and to extend our relationship we will invite India to play a series next year in August. We will find a way to at least keep the window open.”Cricket ties between Pakistan and India were put on ice following the 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai and the upcoming series will be the first in four years.Pakistan had also sought a postponement of its scheduled tour of Zimbabwe later this month so that they can tour India. Pakistan were scheduled to tour Zimbabwe before their South Africa visit in 2013, but Zimbabwe Cricket agreed to put it off.

Mismatch looms in low-key series

There’s little buzz in the build-up to the series, but it provides New Zealand the chance to claw back some respect and South Africa the opportunity to work on their ODI strategies

Big Picture You can tell a lot about a place by simply browsing through its newspapers. A quick glance at the local media in South Africa will reveal that three-match ODI series against New Zealand is almost not happening. The back page has been taken over by football’s African Nations’ Cup which is being hosted in South Africa and begins on the same day as the first ODI. The inside pages are a mixture of Super Rugby previews, Australian Open action and look ahead to the Test series against Pakistan. Only a few lines have been set aside for the New Zealand contest and most will say, deservedly so given the mis-match of the Test series.New Zealand’s media is also not taking the series too seriously. The two newspaper journalists and one radio reporter who covered the Tests have left South African shores. their parting words were that they would return home to concentrate on the upcoming England series and would only keep this contest in the very periphery of their vision.Even if it is of little interest, the series will be of some use to both participating sides. For New Zealand, it is an opportunity to claw back some respect after they were humiliated in the Tests. They are still without some of their key players but at least look a more capable unit in this format than the longer ones. Specialists such as Kyle Mills, Rob Nicol and Grant Elliott have been brought in to bolster their ranks and New Zealand will hope to compete and maybe even spring a surprise or two.South Africa will see this as phase 1 in the long-term preparations for the 2015 World Cup. Although two years away, South Africa’s 2013 schedule means they can focus this period on fifty-over cricket. They played 13 ODIs in 2012 and could play as many as ten more this year, depending on how far they go in the Champions Trophy. Winning that competition will go a long way to ensure the chokers label starts peeling off and coming with ways to win that start in this series.Form guide (most recent first, completed matches only)
South Africa: WLLWW
New Zealand: LLLLLIn the spotlightIt’s tough to keep a proper eye on a coach but Gary Kirsten’s strategies will be under the microscope as he looks to create an ODI unit that win ICC silverware. Kirsten has earmarked 2013 as an important period for ODI development in a similar way to how 2012 was identified as the time for the Test team to shine. The success in the longest format has come through consistency and a solid team culture which Kirsten said will take longer to embed in the limited-overs side. His first task is to find the right combinations, then to ensure the continually indecisive AB de Villiers is comfortable in his role as captain and lastly, to get the tactics right. In between that and managing workload ahead of the Pakistan series, Kirsten has his plate overflowing for the next week. After an inept show with the bat in the Tests, Martin Guptill returns to the white-ball game with a point to prove. He has already had success in the Twenty20 series where his unbeaten century singlehandedly levelled the series for New Zealand and his capability in the shorter forms is much lauded. His tendency in Tests to hang his bat out to dry gets shelved in limited-overs where he plays with freedom and finesse. Good performances in the three ODIs won’t stop the questions about his ability against the red ball but it may buy him some time.Team news: A new wicketkeeper in Quinton de Kock means that de Villiers will be free from the glovework in this series. De Kock batted at No. 3 in the Twenty20s but came in lower in this format, although South Africa’s batting line-up will remain flexible. Colin Ingram could find himself back in the starting XI with Farhaan Behardien likely to make his ODI debut and both will compete with Ryan McLaren, depending on whether South Africa want an allrounder. Robin Peterson will do the spinning duties while any combination of two of the four quicks will play.South Africa: (probable) 1 Graeme Smith 2 Hashim Amla 3 Faf du Plessis 4 AB de Villiers (capt) 5 Quinton de Kock (wk), 6 and 7 Colin Ingram/Farhaan Behardien/Ryan McLaren 8 Robin Peterson, 9, 10 and 11 Dale Steyn/Morne Morkel/Lonwabo Tsotsobe/Rory KleinveldtGuptill and Nicol should open the batting with Brendon McCullum at No.3. Williamson will have to move up a spot because of Ross Taylor’s absence. James Franklin should have recovered from the hamstring injury which ruled him out of the Port Elizabeth Test. The allrounder’s spot will be decided between Colin Munro, Jimmy Neesham and Elliott while one of Neil Wagner or Mitchell McClenaghan could make their ODI debuts.New Zealand: (probable) 1 Rob Nicol 2 Martin Guptill, 3 Brendon McCullum (capt), 4 Kane Williamson, 5 James Franklin, 6 BJ Watling, 7 Colin Munro/Jimmy Neesham/Grant Elliott 8 Nathan McCullum, 9, 10 and 11 Kyle Mills/Neil Wagner/Mitchell McClenaghanStats and Trivia: Despite last playing an ODI in September, South Africa are currently the No.1 ranked ODI team, one point ahead of England. New Zealand are ranked ninth. Paarl, which is one of South Africa’s smaller grounds, is hosting its second ODI in as many summers as part of the drive to spread the game. Last January, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 43 at this venue, chasing 302 for victory. New Zealand’s are without their top-ranked batsmen Ross Taylor (No.18 overall) and bowler Tim Southee (No.15) because of mismanagement and injury respectively. South Africa’s highest places batsman on the rankings is Hashim Amla (No.1) and their best bowler is Lonwabo Tsotsobe (No.4). Both are in the squad. Quotes:”For them, the change of format will be quite refreshing. New Zealand have always done well in World Cups, which means their very good at white-ball cricket as a unit. It will be a closer series.”
“I’m going to bat at No. 5. That will allow the aggressive guys up front followed by guys who know how to build an innings at 3 and 4.”

Jadeja: Because of the dew, the entire game changes

India outclassed Scotland and in doing so also bolstered their hopes of staying alive in the 2021 T20 World Cup.It was a night to remember for birthday boy Virat Kohli. Everything went according to his plan. First, he won the toss. Then he watched as Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami bowled the opposition out for 85. KL Rahul whacked 50 of those runs all by himself and ensured victory with 13.3 overs and eight wickets to spare.

The early intent
It was always unlikely that India would lose to Scotland, but they still had to play well because there was another very important box to tick. Net run rate. That’s why Jasprit Bumrah began with a slew of yorkers in the first over. That’s why Varun Chakravarthy followed him, hoping to leverage his mystery spin for wickets against a set of batters who had never faced him before.India were simple with their plans and ruthless with their execution. The quicks bowled quick and at the stumps. The spinners bowled tight and spun it a mile. The batters went out and gave it a superb whack.India are now in third place – above Afghanistan – with the best net run rate (1.619) in Group 2. Now, if Afghanistan beat New Zealand on Sunday, India will be through to the semi-finals.The problem facing Jadeja
Nearly all of Jadeja’s focus in T20 cricket is in restricting the batter. But when there is a little turn on offer, he starts to take on greater responsibilities. That was the case on Friday as he produced his best figures in T20 internationals. As soon as he gets one ball to turn, Jadeja becomes every bit as dangerous as a mystery spinner. Because he has so much control over his craft that he can turn one ball a mile – like the one that went right through Richie Berrington – while ensuring another just skids on straight – like the one that pinned Matthew Cross in front. That one over – the seventh which produced two wickets – set India on their way to the victory they absolutely needed. The mismatch
Scotland only ever tried to attack 46 of the balls they faced. And for all that trouble, they made only 65 runs on top of losing five wickets.India, within the first four overs, attacked 15 balls and scored 45 runs from them. Zero wickets. There. That’s how much of a mismatch this was. Rahul and Rohit Sharma hit eight fours and two sixes in the first 24 balls of the chase and killed the game off in a ridiculous hurry.
