Twenty20 squad looks settled – Pybus

Bangladesh coach Richard Pybus doesn’t expect any major changes to the squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka next month

Mohammad Isam12-Aug-2012Bangladesh coach Richard Pybus doesn’t expect any major changes to the squad for the ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka next month. He was also pleased that some of the players had improved their Twenty20 skills after the tours to Zimbabwe and Europe over the last two months.Barring three players who are participating in the ongoing Sri Lanka Premier League, the rest began training at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, though they were forced indoors due to the Dhaka rain. This camp will be the final preparation at home before the World Twenty20, as their next destination is Trinidad and Tobago, where they will play a four-nation Twenty20 tournament as part of the island’s 50th independence day celebrations.”It is important for us that we have a core group of people to work with, as the side is quite settled now and I don’t see any major changes in the team when we go forward to Trinidad and the World Cup,” Pybus said. “A lot of these players would transfer over to the one-day squad. I have been able to see the attitude and skills of the guys. Now I need to underline it with very specific formats with specific skill-sets.”I think we have reasonably settled on that, though that doesn’t mean we are where we need to be. We have certainly grown. After two months, I have understood what we need to do not just for the [Twenty20] World Cup but even after that. The World Cup is a benchmark which will let you know where you are.”During their tour of Europe, Bangladesh made a clean sweep of Ireland, but in the Netherlands, they were beaten by Scotland and the hosts, ending with four wins out of six.”We didn’t play the way we would have liked to in the three games in Holland. But it was important for us to get that experience and get to the ground after the high of winning the Ireland series and have our focus brought back to the fact that we are still a growing, emerging cricket nation,” Pybus said.Despite the results, Pybus was also happy with the players’ accommodating outlook after encountering difficult weather and ordinary facilities.”I am very happy with their attitude, especially in Ireland where it was not that easy for the touring side as there was rain and the wicket was damp,” Pybus said. “There were limited tour facilities but the guys got into it, they did a lot of fielding work and conditioning.”We even had to go to a school to train but the guys took it as an opportunity and that showed that they wanted to learn and get better. In Ireland and Holland you won’t get all the facilities but there was no complaining, they just went about being busy. This was a really positive mindset and we will build a good team.”He also said that Shakib-Al-Hasan was “reasonably happy” with his recovery progress from a knee injury. “We are just going to build him up gradually before bringing him back to play cricket. I chatted with him in the morning and he was confident,” Pybus said.

Chand, Passi seal easy win for India

India’s openers performed far better against Zimbabwe than they did against West Indies, setting up a platform for a match-winning total

India’s openers performed far better against Zimbabwe than they did against West Indies, setting up a platform for a match-winning score despite a middle-order slowdown at Tony Ireland Stadium. In a match they had to win to stay in theUnder-19 World Cup, Unmukt Chand and Prashant Chopra delivered a 139-run partnership, and a last-over thrash from medium-pacer Kamal Passi converted an average total into a competitive one.Passi carried the momentum from his five-ball 24 through the lunch break and into his bowling, taking the first four wickets to fall during a six-over spell thatseverely set back the Zimbabwe chase. At 30 for 4 in the 12th over, there was too much lost ground to recover, and although allrounder Malcolm Lake scored a century that gave India a scare, he had no support and Zimbabwe were dismissed 63 runs short. Passi returned to take two important wickets during the final ten overs, finishing with 6 for 23.India made two changes to their XI from after the loss to West Indies. Left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh was unwell and medium-pacer Rush Kalaria was left out. Their spots went to Passi and Ravikant Singh, the third seam bowler. Chand lost the toss once again and Zimbabwe chose to bowl on a fresh pitch, the one closest to the grandstand. It meant one square boundary was significantly shorter than the other.Zimbabwe’s new-ball bowlers, Kyle Bowie and Curthbert Musoko, didn’t have the pace to harry the India openers and they pitched too full too often. Chand was able to drive his first ball, from Bowie, to the cover boundary. Chopra began more slowly, getting his eye in before cutting a short ball from Musoko to the point fence.Unlike against Ronsford Beaton and the other West Indians, India’s openers were able to come on to the front foot, and were also given width when the length was short. The powerful drives and cuts began to flow and after ten overs, India were 56 for 0 with 12 fours, 11 on the off side, one on the leg. In the 11th, Chand upper cut Luke Jongwe, as soon as he came on to bowl, over the shorter point boundary. In the 20th, he hoisted Musoko on to the top of the grass banks beyond the wide long-on boundary to take India to 115 for 0.Both openers made half-centuries, Chand off 46 balls and Chopra off 70, and it wasn’t until Zimbabwe brought on their fourth bowler, Lake, that they got a breakthrough. Lake caught a skier off his own bowling after Chopra top-edged a pull against the short ball. Chand fell in the 30th over, lofting the legspinner Peacemore Zimwa to long-off, and India slowed down drastically after that.Lake continued to keep the batsmen in their crease with his length and Campbell Light, who was introduced only in the 40th over, dismissed three more batsmen with short balls. India were only 237 for 5 at the start of the final over, for which Musoko replaced Light, and lost Vijay Zol to its first ball.Passi took guard and then began to swing at everything. He made good contact too. The ball disappeared to the midwicket and fine-leg boundary repeatedly and that flourish brought 24 runs.Forty-five minutes later, Passi was in action again. He got Kevin Kasuza to edge a short ball to the wicketkeeper, bowled Massasire with a full one that swung, had Matthew Bentley caught behind with a bouncer, and Ryan Burl pulling to the man at deep midwicket. His first spell was 7-1-15-4.After Passi left centre stage, Lake occupied it, single-handedly reviving a cause that was almost lost by the 14th over. A left-hand batsman, Lake stayed firm at one end, adding 87 runs for the fifth wicket, with Luke Jongwe, to give Zimbabwe hope. Jongwe was run out in the 32nd over, though, and Lake sat on his haunches in disappointment. He stepped it up after that, hitting four fours and two sixes in the 36th and 37th overs. Sandeep Sharma, however, bounced back from that beating by dismissing Mayavo in a two-run over, leaving Zimbabwe needing 94 in 12 overs with three wickets left.As he began to run out of partners, Lake tried to farm the strike as well, but the task ahead of him was too much for one person. Passi, in the first over of his second spell, trapped Bowie lbw for a first-ball duck, and in his next had Lake caught at cover. The two best performers from each team had the final say in the game.

South Africa seek to finish the job

Match facts

Big picture

For the second series this year, England are faced with a must-win final Test in order to preserve their No. 1 status. They managed to produce a No. 1 performance in Colombo to defeat Sri Lanka and stay top of the pile. That performance followed four consecutive defeats and, once again, England have to pull something out of the bag after less-than-ideal preparation.Their cricket might have improved at Headingley in the second Test but any sign of improvement has been totally overshadowed by a social media ruckus. Twitter, YouTube, text messages and emails have ensured Kevin Pietersen’s long-term England future has dominated the news rather than the facts of the immediate future – England have to win this Test. And without Pietersen they are without the man that took the series back to South Africa and at last put them under pressure with his 149.South Africa might be a little miffed by the Pietersen saga too. They have come dangerously close to being dragged into the mire and few are discussing their opportunity to ascend the summit of world cricket, for which they need only a draw. They are by far the more settled of the two camps and have players in form and in confident mood. Several had injury worries after the second Test but they are now fully recovered and preparing to take South Africa to the top.Much will depend in this match on England’s ability to score enough runs. Sounds simple enough – and the totals they have achieved so far in this series would have been good enough to pressurise many teams – but England have found themselves with too few runs to play with against the depth, talent and mental strength of South Africa’s line-up. Twice England have squandered positions to rack up very high scores and they cannot afford to miss their chance at Lord’s, otherwise South Africa’s order could swamp them once again.

Form guide

South Africa DWDWD

Watch out for

There is suddenly some pressure on Graeme Swann. The stock of England’s premier spinner has fallen in the last year – he didn’t have the devastating effect the Pakistan slow men enjoyed in the UAE and laboured for 50 fruitless overs at The Oval under suspicion of an elbow injury. He took his first first-class wicket since June last week for Nottinghamshire at Taunton. Last summer, Swann used the final Test against India at The Oval, to re-establish his claim as one of the world’s best spinners by bowling his side to victory on the final day. He will be hoping for a repeat performance.Dale Steyn endured a miserable Lord’s debut on South Africa’s last tour in 2008, taking 1 for 117 as England built a huge first-innings total. He will be looking for happier memories this week and will hope to add to his 10 wickets – making him the leading wicket-taker – in the series so far.

Pitch and conditions

The Olympic archery tournament was completed less than two weeks ago so it will be interesting to see how the outfield has coped with temporary stands and artificial paths. “It’s not as pristine as you normally see Lord’s but you’ve got to give credit to them for the effort they have put in,” Graeme Smith said. The square was largely unaffected by the archery and with the drier weather in recent weeks than at the start of the season, a truer surface than during the West Indies Test should be found.

Team news

Pietersen’s absence could be the excuse England need to play five bowlers in their search for 20 wickets – something they have been loathe to do in recent times. They used Samit Patel as a fifth bowler in Sri Lanka but you have go back to Dhaka in February 2010 for a match where five specialist bowlers were picked. Swann could replace Pietersen with Ian Bell batting at No. 4 and Matt Prior at No. 6. The tried-and-tested method, however, would be to slot Jonny Bairstow back into the side.England (probable) 1 Andrew Strauss (capt), 2 Alastair Cook, 3 Jonathan Trott, 4 Ian Bell, 5 James Taylor, 6 Jonny Bairstow, 7 Matt Prior (wk), 8 Stuart Broad, 9 Graeme Swann, 10 James Anderson, 11 Steven FinnSouth Africa will remain unchanged, as all their injury worries, Alviro Petersen, Jacques Kallis and Smith, have recovered.South Africa (probable) 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Alviro Petersen, 3 Hashim Amla, 4 Jacques Kallis, 5 AB de Villiers (wk), 6 Jacques Rudolph, 7 JP Duminy, 8 Vernon Philander, 9 Dale Steyn, 10 Morne Morkel, 11 Imran Tahir

Stats and trivia

  • In total, the teams have met 14 times at Lord’s with England winning six and South Africa four.
  • England haven’t beaten South Africa at Lord’s since 1960 – six Tests ago – when they triumphed by an innings and 73 runs.
  • South Africa’s record Test total came at Lord’s in 2003 – 682 for 6 declared.
  • Andrew Strauss’ 100th Test will be his 50th as captain, while Stuart Broad’s 50th Test will be his 100th first-class match

Confira outras respostas do presidente do Clube Atlético Tubarão, Luiz Henrique Martins Ribeiro:

SA not intimidated by spin factor

If cricket was science fiction, contests between Sri Lanka and South Africa might be characterised as tussles between Ewoks and Vulcans.

Andrew Fernando in Hambantota21-Sep-2012If cricket was science fiction, contests between Sri Lanka and South Africa might be characterised as tussles between Ewoks and Vulcans. One side is almost cute. Their emphasis on the “Sri Lankan brand of cricket” is fuzzy, and their insistence on allowing bowlers to be themselves no matter how strange, is charmingly different. South Africa meanwhile are efficiency personified. There is little room for sentiment in their outfit and it is all the more formidable because of it. They have developed some of the best players in the world, and know the science of getting everything out of them. This difference in philosophies is made all the more stark by the teams’ varying strengths. Sri Lanka’s attack is dripping with x-factor, but there is also brittleness about it. South Africa’s bowlers however, are precise and consistent. Sri Lanka revel in spin, whether producing it or playing it, but South Africa are masters of pace, seam and bounce; a brutal art for a dauntless team.Saturday’s encounter between two of the tournament favourites might be a case of who can exploit the other’s weakness better. Ajantha Mendis and Jeevan Mendis shared nine Zimbabwe wickets between them, in Sri Lanka’s 84-run drubbing of Zimbabwe, then South Africa’s pace quartet reaped eight scalps from the same team two nights later. Mahela Jayawardene alluded to South Africa’s perceived weakness against spin when he cited their “inexperienced middle order” ahead of the match, and Sri Lanka’s troubles against quality pace bowling are well known – even if they have improved in that regard lately.South Africa are aware they will have to play Ajantha Mendis on the same surface he took a world record 6 for 8 only four days ago, but captain AB de Villiers said his side know plenty about him and are far from intimidated.”A guy like Mendis is a world class bowler and when he’s going well he will always pick up wickets,” he said. “But we’ve seen him perform under pressure and seen him break down under pressure as well. So hopefully, we can get the upper hand against him and not let him bowl to us.”The pitch will play a significant role. The surface on which South Africa demolished Zimbabwe was perhaps the liveliest of the tournament so far, but the strip that will be used on Saturday also had plenty in it for the seamers.”I was expecting the pitch to bounce a bit, but not as much as it did against Zimbabwe. I was surprised that pitch didn’t really take turn. I’m certainly expecting it to turn a bit more when we play Sri Lanka.”Both teams are through to Super Eights, which means the result of this game only becomes relevant in the event of a tie at the end of the next phase. Each captain conceded they will be tempted to test out their bench strength for the effective dead rubber, but de Villiers stressed that it was more than just a warm up for the matches to come.”I don’t think there will be any drop in intensity for the Sri Lanka game,” de Villiers said. “We’re in the beginning stages of a very, very big event, a tournament that we really want to win. You have to play well in every game and improve in every game. Sri Lanka are the home team and we’re probably underdogs. We’ll try and gain some momentum out of the game.”Sri Lanka may also like to give Akila Dananjaya a chance to prove his talent at international level. If he plays alongside Ajantha Mendis and Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka’s attack will be a showcase of the weird. The Ewoks will hope to hoodwink their opponents into crashing their hovercraft into trees, but if the Vulcans have their way, the script will be clean and predictable but no less impressive.

Bangladesh 'never better prepared' – Ashraful

Mohammad Ashraful has pointed to Bangladesh’s intensive preparation across three continents as their biggest asset as they head into the ICC World Twenty20

Mohammad Isam12-Sep-2012

Mohammad Ashraful has been in good form after converting to the role of opener•BCB

Mohammad Ashraful has pointed to Bangladesh’s intensive preparation across three continents as their biggest asset as they head into the ICC World Twenty20. They have played a quarter of all their Twenty20 internationals this year, as well as two competitions where they played unofficial matches, all targeted towards a proper build-up to the event, a factor that went missing ahead of two of the three previous tournaments.Ashraful has steadied himself as an opener during the past four months, having played 11 out of the 13 games and averaging a shade above thirty. He was also a late call-up for the Ruhuna Royals in the Sri Lanka Premier League, a tournament which also featured Bangladesh team-mates Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah and Nasir Hossain (though he didn’t play a match).”We have played a lot of Twenty20 matches during the past couple of months. If you include the practice games then we will have around 17-18 matches going into the first encounter of the World Twenty20,” Ashraful said after Bangladesh’s arrival in Colombo.”This is probably the best preparation we have had before a World T20 event. Also, some of us have participated in the Sri Lankan Premier League last month and that experience could be crucial. I believe everyone has a better understanding of the requirements of the shortest version of cricket now.”When Richard Pybus moved him to open the batting alongside Tamim back in June, it was viewed with initial apprehension. While the numbers suggest only a run-of-the-mill improvement, it has had a positive effect on his mindset, which should be further aided by his experience of playing every Bangladesh tour to Sri Lanka.”I have made good starts in recent times as an opener,” he said. “I feel I am hitting the ball well. I have some excellent memories of Sri Lanka and I have been on every tour of this country since my international debut. I am really looking forward to the tournament.”After competing in Zimbabwe in a triangular series that also featured a South Africa XI, Bangladesh won four out of six T20Is in Europe during July. The last leg of their preparatory tour was to Trinidad & Tobago, where they played T20s against Barbados, Afghanistan and the hosts in a four-nation tournament. They finished second behind Afghanistan on net run-rate but Ashraful wasn’t prepared to disregard the campaign due to the loss in the last game.”I think we did fairly well,” he said. “We won easily against Barbados and Afghanistan by chasing in rain-reduced games. We should have beaten Trinidad & Tobago in the last match after having them reeling on 12 for five but they got home in the final over.”He was also happy to see Ziaur Rahman make the most of his opportunities after being given a long-awaited break by the national selectors. Essentially a one-day specialist, Ziaur hasn’t made an eye-catching amount of runs but his ability to hit sixes (he has 11 in the last 13 games) is more than handy for Bangladesh.”We have found some ideal cricketers for Twenty20 to compliment the likes of Shakib [Al Hasan], Tamim, Mushfiqur Rahim and Abdur Razzak,” Ashraful said. “Ziaur Rahman is a handy batsman to have as he is a natural big hitter. Mahmudullah is becoming a very useful allrounder in these conditions and Elias Sunny has proved his worth in this version. The return of Mashrafe [Mortaza] is a big plus and he has got into a nice rhythm. His lower order batting can also change matches.”Bangladesh play both their World Twenty20 group-stage matches in Pallekele, starting with New Zealand on September 21 and then against Pakistan four days later.
