Pitch takes centrestage in Ranji final

The Ranji Trophy final, starting Thursday, will be played on the same surface on which Tamil Nadu played two matches last month, which could make the track a little weary. The pitch had behaved differently in those matches so it is uncertain how it will play in the final. In the Tamil Nadu-Madhya Pradesh contest during the group stage, out of the 30 wickets to fall, 21 were bagged by fast bowlers. But in the quarter-finals against Maharashtra, half of the 25 victims were taken by the slow bowlers (13). Both matches were drawn with Tamil Nadu earning points on the basis of first-innings lead. The one important difference this time is there will be an extra day’s play, which will enhance chances of a result. No less an authority than N Srinivasan, the BCCI president, told the curator at Chepauk to prepare a sporting pitch for the five-day final. After the World Cup, the main square was re-laid completely and at least three tracks were covered with black clay instead of the original red clay. The black clay, it is learned, retains the moisture in the mornings but also helps open up the cracks in the surface in the afternoon heat, helping spinners. But being newly-laid, the surface is yet to mature completely; and with two matches having already been played on the same pitch, there could be the danger of the surface getting weary after the first two days. So, should we expect a pitch that will have good bounce, good pace, good carry, and let the spinners gain control later in the match? Opinion is divided to say the least.Ask the men who matter, the players, and they are still waiting to figure out which of the eight tracks in the square will be used for the final. To further add to the intrigue, the curator cannot speak to the media ahead of the match.WV Raman, former Tamil Nadu captain and coach, predicts the pitch will help spinners. “I can’t see many tracks on the square wherein you will have a lot of bounce and carry which is going to last,” Raman said on , ESPNcricinfo’s audio show previewing the Ranji final. “If at all that is going to happen, it will be on the opening day or probably till the second session of the second day. Otherwise, it is going to be low and slow and maybe go on to help the spinners later on.”

All-round Rhinos ease to win over Rocks

A round-up of the action from the Coca-Cola Pro50 Championship 2011-12

ESPNcricinfo staff14-Jan-2012Mid West Rhinos put in an all-round team performance and eased to a seven-wicket win over Southern Rocks at the Kwekwe Sports Club. The Rhinos put the Rocks in to bat and kept striking at regular intervals, eventually bowling them out for 211 in 48.3 overs. That the Rocks even got past 200 was only due to their captain Richmond Mutumbami, who scored a fluent 82. While the Rhinos bowlers shared the wickets around, new-ball bowler Richard Muzhange finished with the best figures: 3 for 30. In the chase, Rhinos’ top three, Vusi Sibanda, Steve Marillier and Gary Ballance, all scored half-centuries to make sure their side got home comfortably in the 43rd over.Mashonaland Eagles continued their dominance in the tournament, beating Mountaineers by 59 runs in a rain-hit encounter at the Harare Sports Club. After being put in, the Eagles got to 218 – a commendable total when you consider their start. They were reduced to 11 for 4 and 80 for 6 by Tendai Chatara, who claimed a five-for. However, Sikandar Raza and Elton Chigumbura, batting at Nos. 7 and 8, made 58 each to set up the competitive total. Mountaineer’s chase didn’t quite get going at any stage, and needing a revised target of 193 from 33 overs, they could manage only 133 for 8. Kyle Jarvis, with 3 for 39, was the most effective of the Eagles’ bowlers.

'Got to make sure we are concentrating' – Clarke

Michael Clarke, nursing a sore hamstring himself, called the fielding effort horrible and said that Australia will need to be much better if they are to win matches in the rest of the competition

Sidharth Monga at the Adelaide Oval12-Feb-2012Australia were not switched on tonight. There were fumbles, there were missed direct-hits, there were poor throws, and India – who at times batted equally sluggishly – were let off the hook. Michael Clarke, nursing a sore hamstring himself, called the fielding effort horrible and said that Australia will need to be much better if they are to win matches in the rest of the competition.More than the others, there were three crucial moments where Australia slipped. Early on in MS Dhoni’s innings, Ricky Ponting fumbled before hitting the stumps at the non-striker’s end, allowing Dhoni ample time to make his ground. Then, with 29 to defend off 22 balls, Ravindra Jadeja was all but run out but for Ryan Harris’s poor throw from point. In the next over Dhoni was dead again, only for Clarke to miss a direct hit from an arm’s length.”I think it’s concentration more than anything,” Clarke said. “If you look at myself, Ricky Ponting and also Dave Warner, we fumbled a few balls tonight, and we are better than that. You can’t blame anyone else when you are not performing as well as you like. We just got to make sure we are concentrating, and we are ready for every ball. It [Adelaide Oval] is as nice a ground as anywhere in the world. It’s a beautiful outfield, very flat. We have no excuses for our performance tonight. We just weren’t good enough.”Clarke couldn’t say if this lack in concentration could be put down to fatigue from a long season, but he said he was not queuing up to rest. “It’s international cricket, another chance to play for Australia, and you want to perform every single time you do that,” Clarke said. “Has it been a long summer? Well it has been a great summer for us so far. I can only talk about me personally: I feel like I am hitting the ball sweet, I feel I am training hard, and I am really keen to play every game at the moment.”Like all the guys, no one wants to rest. It’s just about managing the workloads, and making sure we are putting guys on the park that we think can help us win the game, [that ones that] give us the best chance of winning the game. If there is a time that we feel boys are a little tired, we would do that [rest players] as we have done with Michael Hussey. It’s just about assessing the team.”Both of India’s win against Australia this season have come in games where Matthew Wade has been pushed down the order. Clarke joked this was the last time it had happened. “I think Wadey can play in both areas,” he said. “He is good against fast bowling and he is good at the top of the order, and he is good at the death and he has done that for Victoria. Just a bit of a change in the order. I thought we’d try something else tonight. Did it work? We did pretty well, we made 270, we could have made a few more runs. But that’s the way it goes.”Clarke and Australia have a big day on Monday. Clarke will have his sore hamstring scanned, and they have to select the team for the next few games. “I’ll probably have a scan tomorrow, and then we’ll go from there. It’s a little bit sore, I have just had some ice on it. Fingers crossed, hopefully everything is okay.”

New Zealand look to Hobart for inspiration

Some sports teams draw inspiration from what their predecessors did years before them. New Zealand need only delve three months into the archives to be reminded of what they can achieve

Firdose Moonda in Wellington22-Mar-2012Some sports teams draw inspiration from what their predecessors did years before them. New Zealand need only delve three months into the archives to be reminded of what they can achieve. After being smacked sideways by Australia in Brisbane, losing by nine wickets in the first Test last December, they returned in Hobart to record a historic win. The victory was talked about as a turning point for New Zealand and whose results would resonate far into the future. The Hobart comeback will be a talking point as they head into Wellington for the final Test of the summer, although Ross Taylor said they are not necessarily banking on lightening striking twice.”We have touched on it a little bit; we haven’t touched on it a lot. But we were in a similar situation [in Hobart],” he said. “The score reflected that we got pretty much thrashed in Brisbane but it was actually a lot closer than people give it credit for and I think the same thing about Hamilton. We did have our moments in that game and if a couple of bounces of the ball went our way then it could have been a different story. We came back hard at the Hobart Test and we plan to do the same again tomorrow.”New Zealand have not had the opportunity to test that theory properly yet. Their first assignment after Hobart was a relatively simple one against Zimbabwe and since then they have played just two more Tests. The latest one, in Hamilton, is coloured with shades of the Gabba defeat. Although New Zealand were able to set South Africa a more challenging 101 to win (the target they set Australia in Brisbane was a mere 19), they still lost heavily. After Hobart, their confidence in their ability to win games with five specialist batsmen and four seamers grew. But, in the space of two matches, South Africa have made them rethink. New Zealand will include an extra batsman in the XI at the Basin Reserve and opt for three seamers, which may be seen as going backwards but Taylor is optimistic about the change. “The balance of our side might be a little bit different in this game. I’m sure that it will be good to have a different balance to our side and a different energy with a couple of new guys coming in,” he said.New Zealand’s main concern is putting runs on the board against a relentless South African attack. Taylor said the team management is urging them to keep it simple. “The message to the batsmen is that ‘we have got confidence in you. Play your natural game’.”None of New Zealand’s batsmen have got into three figures, with Kane Williamson their top-scorer across the two matches with 77. Both Taylor and Brendon McCullum have shown the capability to get a few more, but periods of stoic resistance and sublime shot-play are spoilt by making rash mistakes. “Mental barriers sometimes get you out,” Taylor said. “Hundreds are what get you into good positions, 60s and 70s are good for a certain period of time but it’s about getting hundreds and big hundreds. First of all, you have to get yourself in. Brendon and myself have got ourselves in but we haven’t been able to capitalise.”The biggest obstacle to New Zealand scoring runs has been Vernon Philander who has looked threatening every time he has touched the ball. With his ability to swing, reverse-swing and get seam movement, Philander has offered no let-up but Taylor said New Zealand are determined not to let him break through this time. “It’s just trying to deny him as much as possible. We have denied them [the other bowlers] to a certain extent but Philander has got on top of us. We have to deny him and if we do that, I’m sure we will put a bit more pressure on South Africa,” he said.Philander’s nagging consistency has troubled New Zealand but Taylor seems to have figures out a plan to negate his effectiveness. “He puts the ball in the right places for long enough. I don’t think reverse swing will come into it as much as it did in Hamilton,” Taylor said. ‘We have to play him on his merits and when we have played him attackingly we have come out on top, so maybe that’s the way we go about it.”Taylor said that if New Zealand win in Wellington, it will not be as defining as the Hobart victory especially because they have backtracked on their four-seamer philosophy. But, it will still be an important achievement and a sign of what is to come for New Zealand. “It will be very big in the context of this series in itself,” Taylor said.Edited by Kanishkaa Balachandran

Talha ruled out of UAE Test series

Pakistan seamer Mohammad Talha has been ruled out of the Test series against England in the UAE due to injury. “Talha developed back problem and in the MRI scan it was revealed that he has a disc problem and when his pain subsides in the next two three days he will return home,” Pakistan team manager Naveed Cheema told .Cheema said Talha needed 10 to 12 days rest. Talha didn’t play for Pakistan in their 10-wicket win in Dubai, but he did pick up four wickets in the warm-up game for the PCB XI prior to the Test series. Cheema said Pakistan would not be calling in a replacement. The second Test begins in Abu Dhabi on January 25.

Sylhet Royals collapse to sixth defeat

Scorecard
Suhrawadi Shuvo picked up three wickets in an economical spell•BPL T20

Barisal Burners sealed a comprehensive win over Sylhet Royals at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong. A strong bowling performance, led by left-arm spinner Suhrawadi Shuvo who took 3 for 20, helped restrict Sylhet to 120, a score Barisal chased with ease.Sylhet, after choosing to bat, began steadily but collapsed not long after. Kamran Akmal fell for a run-a-ball 17, and that was the start of the slide. In the 12th over, Sylhet were reeling at 58 for 6, having lost Akmal with the score on 21. Farhat Hossain picked up two of those wickets, Shuvo bagged two as well and Al-Amin Hossain and Yasir Arafat took one each. Sohail Tanvir (33) and Naeem Islam (22*) staged a recovery that gave the Sylhet score some respectability. The pair added 45 and helped post 120, which was inadequate.Barisal openers Ahmed Shehzad and Brad Hodge made a mockery of the Sylhet score, putting together a stand of 116 that sealed their opponents’ fate. Shehzad smashed five sixes in his 60 before being stumped; Hodge struck as many sixes in his unbeaten 54, and saw his team through in just 13.2 overs.Sylhet are reeling at the bottom of the table with six defeats in a row. Barisal have three wins from six games.

Swann hits out at 'witch hunt'

Graeme Swann has hit out at what he perceives is a “witch hunt” against Andrew Strauss following England’s four Test defeats this year and the captain’s poor return with the bat and backed him as the best captain in the game.

Andrew McGlashan in Colombo04-Apr-2012Graeme Swann has hit out at what he perceives is a “witch hunt” against Andrew Strauss following England’s four Test defeats this year and the captain’s poor return with the bat and backed him as the best captain in the game.Strauss was the major talking point from an England point of view heading into the Colombo Test. While the team was winning, as they have done for much of the last three years, the fact Strauss was not contributing hugely with the bat was generally overlooked. He has scored one Test hundred in 48 innings although showed the fighting qualities he has always had with his 61 on the second day in Colombo.Swann, who took 4 for 75 to help bowl Sri Lanka out for 275, insisted Strauss had not been affected by the debate while adding the dressing room has barely given it another thought.”He hasn’t shown any signs,” he said. “We only realise he’s under scrutiny because some of us can read. I see it as a bit of a witch hunt and I think it is unjustified, but you wouldn’t tell from way he carries himself. He’s very laid-back and phlegmatic. He’s the best captain in world cricket and a world-class opening batsman. He’ll get nothing but support from me.”Barring his first two Tests against India in 2008, during Kevin Pietersen’s brief time in charge and the two games Alastair Cook captained in Bangladesh, Swann has played his entire Test career under Strauss. He believes there is still a huge amount of credit available to him for his time at the helm which has included two Ashes series victories and the climb to No. 1 in the world.”When anyone’s in a position like Straussy and when things aren’t going well like they have been then pressure builds up,” he said. “My view is that he should be afforded leeway because of what he’s done over the last two or three years.”I don’t think there’s any man as capable of leading a team in world cricket. He’s not in horrible nick, he’s getting good starts and it’s just one of those things all players go through. His barren spell is a lot better than other people’s has been and he’ll bounce back and be scoring hundreds before you know it.”
