I'm ready for a recall – Tsolekile

Seven years after making his Test debut, Lions wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile says he is ready for an international recall. Tsolekile played three Tests in 2004 and was touted as a successor to Mark Boucher but did not go on to challenge for a spot. After moving from Cape Town to Johannesburg and, in his third season up country, Tsolekile believes he has done enough to be given a second chance.Tsolekile was named captain of the South Africa Invitation XI, which will play a three-day match against the Sri Lankans in Benoni from December 9. Although he was not included in the squad for the first Test, Tsolekile hoped to make a big enough impression to get selected later in the series.”My mind is in the right place. I’m in the right space and I’m ready for it,” Tsolekile told ESPNcricinfo. “I am a much better player than I was when I first played international cricket. I must be thereabouts, because the guy who plays for South Africa A is usually next in line.”Tsolekile also played in the A side that faced the Australians and scored a half-century on a tricky pitch in Potchefstroom. He had also captained the A team on tours to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh last year.Although a competent wicketkeeper, Tsolekile was tripped up at international level by his batting. He scored 47 runs in three Tests and admitted he was below-par. “Keeping has always come naturally to me, but I would say that my batting wasn’t up to international standards when I made my debut.”Since moving to the Lions franchise, after the coach Dave Nosworthy rescued an out-of-contract Tsolekile from an office job, he spent a lot of time crafting his batting technique. “I used to rely too much on talent,” Tsolekile said. “In batting, you have to work hard for runs, so the big thing for me was to learn to become more patient.” Tsolekile said he learned from batsmen Neil McKenzie and Zander de Bruyn and the efforts paid off.In his first season with Lions, Tsolekile was the leading wicketkeeper at domestic level, both with bat and gloves. He scored 581 runs at an average of 58.10 and had 39 dismissals. The 2010-11 season was less profitable and his 281 runs came an average of 25.54. He amassed fewer runs than fellow wicketkeepers Daryn Smit, Morne van Wyk and Heino Kuhn, but Tsolekile and Kuhn had the most dismissals – 35. This season Tsolekile is, once again, in front. He has 269 runs from four matches.Tsolekile believed his performance over the previous three seasons would strengthen his case. “When you pick a wicketkeeper, you have to look at someone who has been consistent and had two or three good months, not just one.”I have always batted at No. 6 or 7 and so I am used to pushing the lower order along,” he said. “None of this will be new to me. I am 31-years old now and know my game well.”

Somerset line up Philander deal

Somerset have lined up Vernon Philander, the South Africa pace bowler, as an overseas player for the first two months of next season

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Dec-2011Somerset have lined up Vernon Philander, the South Africa pace bowler, as an overseas player for the first two months of next season. The deal is subject to Philander not being involved with the IPL, which which overlaps the start of the county campaign. If he is available he will add depth to Somerset’s pace attack for the first half of the County Championship season before South Africa’s series against England begins.Philander burst onto the Test scene in November when he took 5 for 15 on debut against Australia at Cape Town and ended with the Man-of-the-Series award.”Watching Vernon bowl in Cape Town against Australia recently I was immediately impressed by his ability and character in an especially demanding debut on his home ground,” Brian Rose, Somerset’s director of cricket, told the club website. “His all-round ability will be a great asset in our side and I’m sure our supporters will be engaged by his infectious personality.”Should Philander join he would help cover for the loss of Charl Willoughby, the left-arm seamer, who departed Somerset after the 2011 season and has joined Essex.

O Osman quebrou o ritmo do jogo.

Mental toughness key for New Zealand batsmen – Taylor

Ross Taylor has said New Zealand will aim to bat with more discipline in the second Test in Hobart

The Bellerive pitch was so green it almost had branches growing off it on Thursday, so it was only appropriate that Ross Taylor was keen to talk about leaves. Specifically, he was frustrated at New Zealand’s lack of them at the Gabba.Of the 20 wickets New Zealand lost in Brisbane, 17 were caught. Of the three that weren’t, Daniel Vettori was run out and Ross Taylor played on to a wide ball from James Pattinson. The only man who could claim to have fallen to a ball that threatened his stumps was Chris Martin, the worst batsman in Test cricket, who was bowled by Nathan Lyon in the first innings. The Australians bowled well, especially the debutant fast man James Pattinson, who swung the ball away at pace, but the high rate of dismissals to wider balls was a damning indictment on New Zealand’s batsmen. Where was their Test match tenacity? Where was their willingness to respect the good balls and put away the bad?It is a matter of mental toughness and wise judgment. It has been a major focus of their training over the past four days.”As a batting unit we need to be able to leave outside the off stump and let them bowl at us because a lot of the deliveries the Australians did bowl weren’t even hitting the stumps when they got us out, me included,” Taylor said. “We play a lot of cricket now and the mental side of the game is the biggest part we need to [improve].”There won’t be any changes to the batting order in Hobart, but further failures over the next week will give the selectors, John Wright and Kim Littlejohn, some questions to answer. There is a month and a half before New Zealand’s next Test, a one-off game against Zimbabwe in Napier, but looming in March is a much tougher three-Test series against South Africa.Since Wright took over as coach, New Zealand have played four Tests. In that time, their only centurions have been Daniel Vettori and Martin Guptill, while Brendon McCullum has averaged 27.12 as an opener, Jesse Ryder hasn’t scored a half-century and averages 13.50, and the captain, Taylor, has four fifties but no centuries.Taylor was especially disappointed with his efforts in Brisbane. After his needless drive at a wide Pattinson ball in the first innings, he tickled a catch behind first ball in the second, to register his first duck in a Test career of 59 innings, the equal third-longest such stretch by any player in Test history.”Any captain would want to lead from the front and I’m no different,” Taylor said. “A poor shot just before lunch in the first innings and a nervous poke in the second innings – it’s disappointing to get out those ways but you’ve got to try and put those to the side. You never like getting out but you’ve just got to get out there, front up and get through the first 20 or 30 balls. Hopefully it will get a lot easier from there.”Not that Taylor can expect batting to be easy over the first couple of days in Hobart. The New Zealanders were greeted on Thursday by a hessian-covered pitch with green edges poking out, and whichever captain wins the toss on Friday morning will have a difficult decision to make.”The overhead conditions are the biggest part I think,” Taylor said. “Here in Tassie this year and the past couple of years it’s probably played a lot lower and slower, talking to their players and the groundsman. It’s been pretty hard on day three, three and a half in a four-day game so a Test match day five will be even tougher. We have to see what overhead conditions come but I wouldn’t rule out doing either [batting or fielding].”

Kohli pleased to perform despite verbal battle

Virat Kohli has said his first Test century is all the more special because he had to go through a verbal barrage from Australian fielders to get there, and that he gave it back verbally and still got there

Sidharth Monga at the Adelaide Oval26-Jan-2012Virat Kohli has said his first Test century is all the more special because he had to go through a verbal barrage from Australian fielders to get there, and that he gave it back verbally and still got there. He also spoke about the abusive crowds, which he said was an uneven battle because the crowds get away with it and the players end up getting fined or banned.Kohli said there had been sledging throughout the day, but it reached a “low point” after he nearly ran himself out in desperation to get to his 100th run. “Hilfenhaus said something to me, which was totally unnecessary and out of the blue,” Kohli said. “He wasn’t even bowling or doing anything. I survived that run-out. He said something to me, which I can’t obviously say in a press conference. I gave it back to him. ‘You didn’t even have anything to do with it, why would you do that?'”Ishant and me both came together, and started saying stuff to them. They got really pissed [off] with it, I guess, and I usually play my cricket like that. I gave it back, so whatever happened at the end of the day I am pretty happy with what I did.”The sledging battle between David Warner and Ed Cowan, and Kohli has been an ongoing one. Today, though, Kohli said both of them congratulated him on getting his hundred, and Ricky Ponting tried to calm things down too. Kohli said he was never going to take abuse from anyone.”To give it back verbally and then score a hundred is even better,” he said. “I mean, we don’t go out there to take any kind of stuff from anyone. We are international cricketers as well. They should know that. We need to let them know that. Be it in any way. By talking and by performing. It’s much more satisfying.”They sledge when they get frustrated. Obviously it was hot out there, and constantly they were sledging the players so they could spoil our concentration. During that partnership they went really, really low.”In Sydney they were after me because I wasn’t scoring. Today they were pissed [off] because I got a hundred so it hasn’t changed much, but the reasons have changed.”Peter Siddle said he didn’t mind that kind of sparring with Kohli. “I think he has [had a lot to say] but that’s part of his game, he’s a tough competitor and he’s shown that,” Siddle said. “He goes out there, has a bit of a chirp in the field, but he digs in when he’s got the bat in his hand. That’s the way Australia’s played the game in the past, and that’s the way we like to play it. It’s good fun, a good contest, I like coming up against him and he’s a good player. It’s a nice challenge to have out there, and that’s what people want to watch in Test cricket.”Virat Kohli: “To give it back verbally and then score a hundred is even better”•Getty ImagesThe sledging on the field might have turned out to be an even contest, but Kohli was more annoyed with the fan abuse. He was asked if the Australia players got abused just as badly in India. “I don’t know about that,” Kohli said. “I haven’t spoken to Australian players about that. It is really, really frustrating at times because they say stuff which shouldn’t be said on a cricket field.”We have gone there to play, not to be abused like that. If they have come here [to the ground] to enjoy the game, they should do that. Not get drunk and abuse players. It’s not fair on players. If the player says anything, they are fined and banned. The crowd can just say anything and go home. It should be played in a fair way.”After scoring his maiden century in his eighth match, Kohli also asked for more patience with youngsters coming into Test cricket. Kohli was under immense pressure after his failures in Melbourne and Sydney, with calls for him to be dropped, and had to work hard to come out of that mental state.”They [the youngsters] are all waiting for their opportunities,” Kohli said. “They are as talented or as skilled as any youngster that gets a chance in the team. All of them are eager to play. Putting too much pressure on someone initially, it’s not fair on the guy. You need to let the guy blend into a certain format. Some people start well, some people take time, so you have got to have patience with someone who comes in. All the players who have got chances are good enough. And the day they are mentally even tougher and more sure of themselves, they will be consistent in Test cricket.”This tour has been an emotional journey for Kohli. He watched India lose a Test they could have won, and been involved with crowd abuse and sanctioned for it. He has been the person most sledged by Australia, but he has also been the only Indian to score a century. However, he said he didn’t want to get carried away with it.”I still maintain it’s a learning curve for me,” Kohli said. “I don’t want to say I am established in Test cricket, but I am learning with every game. As long as I can learn and perform at the same time I am going to become a better cricketer everyday, and that’s my aim right now.”Kohli didn’t get to the century without hiccups, though. Two lower-order batsmen fell while he was in the 90s and that reminded him of Perth, where he was left stranded. “After tea, we lost two wickets in two balls again,” he said. “I was pretty frustrated at that point of time. That something like Perth shouldn’t happen again. The next over I decided to go after Harris so that I could get runs and finally, when I got the 100th run, I was on cloud nine. Starting your cricket as a young kid, you always dream of achieving a Test century, and that first one is always the most special.”

Dhoni backs Sehwag to repeat ODI double-ton

MS Dhoni, the India captain, has said Virender Sehwag has the ability to repeat his feat of a double-century in a one-day international. Sehwag, who is standing in for Dhoni during the ongoing one-day series against West Indies, broke the record for the highest score in an ODI on December 8, hitting 219 in Indore. Dhoni said he always knew Sehwag was capable of going past 200 in a one-dayer.”I had always believed that on his day, Sehwag has the ability to score 200 because apart from the big shots, he also uses the bowlers’ pace against them and plays calculative innings,” Dhoni told . “It was a pleasure to watch him batting. Given his talent, he can do it again. So, hopefully, it will be done by him again.”Suresh Raina, who shared a 140-run partnership with Sehwag in Indore, said Sehwag was singing songs by famous Indian singer Kishore Kumar during his knock. “He was playing very well with no tension,” Raina said at a youth summit in Chennai, where India will play the fifth and final ODI against West Indies on December 11. “That day, he was singing some Kishore Kumar songs. He was not feeling any kind of tension.”
