England’s weakness against spin cost them for the third time in the series as they unravelled from a strong position to post an underwhelming total on a slow turning pitch in Mumbai. Their fast bowlers struck three early blows but Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina motored to a 131-run stand at close to seven an over, showcasing the difference between the sides and sparking another needless bout of words in the middle as England’s frustration overflowed. It was England’s own batsmen who had let down their ragged bowlers down when they caved in against spin in the afternoon. R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took 5 for 79 in 20 overs between them after Jonathan Trott and Kevin Pietersen had built on England’s quickest start of the series.Vinay Kumar broke the 73-run stand between Trott and an uncharacteristically subdued Pietersen, then Jadeja and Ashwin worked their way through a clueless England middle order, striking three times in six overs. Tim Bresnan took the score past 200 with a run-a-ball 45, but England were dismissed with 23 deliveries remaining when fast bowler Varun Aaron bowled Bresnan to finish with three wickets on debut.Disciplined pace bowling led by the impressive Steven Finn kept England in with an outside chance at the start of the chase. Kohli and Raina kept the runs coming, though, not allowing the score of 46 for 3 to tie them down in a partnership that steadily at first, and then emphatically, pushed England out of the match, making a 5-0 whitewash ever more likely.Finn and Bresnan had started with testing spells that kept the India openers quiet. The first five overs produced only 17 runs, leading Parthiv Patel to whip across the line and lose his stumps to Finn. Finn struck again in his next over when Gautam Gambhir inside-edged onto his stumps. His opening spell of 5-0-10-2 was followed by a sharp burst from debutant Stuart Meaker that induced Ajinkya Rahane into a poke outside off stump only for wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter to take a leaping one-handed blinder.Scott Borthwick, the young legspinner surprisingly chosen ahead of Grame Swann, bowled with heart, but it was unfair to expect him to have the same effect that the experienced Swann could have managed. Kohli and Raina continued almost unbothered, picking off the singles easily and finding the boundaries with crisp shots. The duo’s approach was in sharp contrast to England’s tottering line-up.Despite India being three down at the start of the bowling Powerplay, Raina took the chance and chipped Meaker just over mid-off for a boundary. His innings grew into a blur of scythes through extra cover and swings down the ground before Finn bowled him after a missed slog during a heated over. Raina had surged to 80 by then and with Kohli easing into elegant drives and cuts, India were runaway winners with almost ten overs remaining.England’s fate had virtually been sealed when their middle order tried to sweep and slog-sweep their way out of trouble. Pietersen was one of three batsmen to fall on the shots, though the substitute fielder Manoj Tiwary was responsible for sending him back with a diving catch after running across from deep midwicket.Ravi Bopara missed one from Jadeja to be caught in front and Jonny Bairstow’s disappointing series continued when he was bowled by a ripper that pitched on leg and turned to hit off stump. Samit Patel and Bresnan tried to salvage something from 145 for 6 but Patel slog-swept Ashwin straight to deep midwicket in another disappointing batting Powerplay for England.Aaron, who had consistently hovered above 140kph on debut, came back to run through the lower order, hitting the stumps three times, the last of which straightened past Bresnan’s outside edge to clip the top of off, with England well short of a challenging total on a turning pitch without Swann.Things hadn’t looked as gloomy for England when Pietersen and Trott accumulated solidly in a steady partnership that helped them recover after Alastair Cook and Kieswetter departed off successive deliveries. Though Pietersen went hard at deliveries and mistimed his strokes at times, Trott kept the runs flowing, cutting Jadeja three times to the deep point boundary. Trott welcomed Vinay’s second spell with a cracking drive that beat the cover sweeper easily but was dismissed two deliveries later. Pietersen continued to find the field and the India spinners soon got on top decisively, yet again.

Weakened India still tough to beat

ESPNcricinfo previews the first one-dayer between India and West Indies in Cuttack

The Preview by Siddarth Ravindran28-Nov-2011Match factsTuesday, November 29
Start time 1430 (0900 GMT)Virender Sehwag and Duncan Fletcher have to guide a relatively youthful Indian side•AFPBig PictureIndia’s previous home one-dayer took place in front of a sparse crowd at the Eden Gardens, reinforcing fears over the quantity of cricket being played, but with Tuesday’s match taking place at the smaller cricketing centre of Cuttack, a jam-packed stadium is expected. Even though the the biggest crowd-pullers like MS Dhoni and Sachin Tendulkar are missing, tickets sales at the Barabati Stadium have been brisk, and even the practice sessions drew plenty of spectators.A full-strength India would be expected to roll over West Indies at home, but they are missing at least four of their headliners. In addition, they have lost the most experienced bowler in their squad, Praveen Kumar – he was ruled out of the first three one-dayers with an injury. That means the most seasoned of the quicks is Vinay Kumar, all of 11 one-dayers old, giving the stand-in captain Virender Sehwag something of a challenge.India are also missing two of their finishers, MS Dhoni and Yuvraj Singh, giving the likes of Rohit Sharma an audition for a permanent place in the hugely competitive middle order.Despite India facing these hurdles, Darren Sammy has no illusions of the task ahead of his team, calling the series a “very, very tough challenge”. Australia are the only team to have won a one-day series in India since April 2005. West Indies are boosted by the arrival of Kieron Pollard, an impact player who can quickly transform matches, and Lendl Simmons, their most consistent one-day batsman of the year. Sunil Narine, the unconventional Trinidad & Tobago offspinner whose variations mystified batsmen in the Champions League T20, could also pose problems in his first outing in international cricket.Form guideIndia WWWWW (Most recent first)
West Indies LWWWWWatch out for…Kieron Pollard has long had an uneasy relationship with the West Indies board, and despite his superstar status in the Twenty20 format, West Indies don’t consider him for selection. That leaves the one-day format as his only platform for international cricket. And, worryingly for him, if there’s one thing West Indies cricket have in abundance, it’s medium-pace bowling, big-hitting allrounders. Darren Sammy is, obviously, an automatic pick, Andre Russell has displayed his talent this year, and Dwayne Bravo could also be a contender as and when fit.Ravindra Jadeja was a deeply unpopular figure towards the end of 2010, but has won over some of the critics with his performances in the home-and-away series against England. Two Man of the Match awards and a bagful of wickets have secured his place in the XI for the current series, but he needs to extend that run. If Yuvraj Singh returns for the Australia tour, India could be tempted to go back to their World Cup-winning formula of seven-batsmen and four-bowlers, which could squeeze Jadeja out of the XI.Pitch and conditionsThe last time these two teams faced off at the Barabati Stadium was nearly five years ago, when India managed to defend 189. This time, though, it is expected to be a high-scoring match, as most ODIs in India usually are. “There will be plenty of runs for the batsmen,” the curator Pankaj Patnaik said. “I am not ruling out a total of 300. Bowlers will get good bounce and there will be a little turn for spinners.” Dew is expected to play a role, though a chemical spray will be regularly used to reduce its impact.Team newsThe absence of Dhoni means Parthiv Patel will have to be picked, dimming the chances of Ajinkya Rahane getting a game early in the series. Rohit Sharma, returning after a finger injury sidelined him during the England tour, is likely to get the nod ahead of Manoj Tiwary for a place in the middle order. The injury to Praveen could allow India play both their rookie quick bowlers, Umesh Yadav and Varun Aaron.India (probable) 1 Virender Sehwag (capt), 2 Parthiv Patel (wk), 3 Gautam Gambhir, 4 Virat Kohli, 5 Suresh Raina, 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Ravindra Jadeja, 8 R Ashwin, 9 Vinay Kumar, 10 Varun Aaron , 11 Umesh YadavWest Indies (probable) 1 Adrian Barath, 2 Lendl Simmons, 3 Marlon Samuels, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Ravi Rampaul, 10 Kemar Roach, 11 Sunil NarineStats and trivia India have won their previous nine one-dayers at home. Their last defeat was against South Africa in the league phase of the World Cup.
West Indies are tied with Australia as the team with the most ODI wins over India in India.Lendl Simmons has one hundred and seven half-centuries in 12 one-day innings in 2011.Quotes”Fitness-wise, we are stronger as a team. The batsmen are showing signs that they can bat for long periods. Most of all, we are showing a fighting spirit.”

“They are very good bowlers, youngsters who need to learn a lot. They are on the right track, and with coach Eric Simons they are doing a great job.”

BCCI was concerned about financial status of Nimbus

Numerous payment problems and questions about their lack of funds were some of the factors the BCCI considered before it decided to terminate its contract with Nimbus Communications

Nagraj Gollapudi16-Dec-2011Numerous payment problems, questions about their lack of funds and repeated demands to include a Pakistan series are some of the factors the BCCI considered before it decided to terminate its contract with Nimbus Communications, ESPNcricinfo has learned. The decision was taken by the board’s working committee at a meeting held in Delhi on Monday.”The board president [N Srinivasan] was worried about the capital of Nimbus and the fact that there is not much liquidity and this is a serious concern going forward,” a senior BCCI official said. India are not scheduled to play any further international cricket at home until September 2012, and the official pointed out that the board was not confident Nimbus could sustain itself as a going concern in the long run. Nimbus had renewed its contract with the BCCI in 2010, negotiating a four-year deal worth about Rs 2000 crores ($379.5 million). The board was equally concerned by what they claim were Nimbus’ regular defaults on payments. According to the contract, Nimbus were supposed to pay 50% of the amount before a series began and the remainder at the end. The board official claimed that Nimbus failed to do so on many occasions, including the last two home series played by India: the five-match ODI series against England followed by the recently concluded tour by West Indies that included three Tests and five ODIs.Nimbus had asked the BCCI to give them a week’s time to clear their dues after the West Indies series. It is understood that Nimbus had to make a payment of Rs 125 crores ($23.7 million), having already paid Rs 75 crore ($14.23 million). Reportedly, the BCCI had even booked rooms for Nimbus officials in Delhi, including for its head, Harish Thawani, to attend the working committee meeting. But to Nimbus officials’ surprise, they started receiving calls from the media about the board’s termination of their contract.”They just terminated [the agreement] without even talking to us,” a Nimbus official said. However, the board official said the BCCI had lost its patience. “Though the default amount at the moment stands at below Rs 100 crores [$18.98 million], it is going to balloon to up to Rs 300 crores [$56.93 million] by February,” the official said. According to him, that amount involves the combined payments for the home series against England and West Indies. “Nimbus can say that they had requested for a few days to clear the default. How much can we wait? We have been doing so for five years.”According to another official privy to discussions, another key reason for BCCI’s decision was Nimbus’ insistence that as part of the contract there had to be an India-Pakistan tour. “Of late they started to point out the Pakistan tour,” the official said. “‘You have to confirm to us that you are doing it. If not we have the right to claim something because we are paying the same money for a West Indies match and a Pakistan match’ is what they kept telling the board.”This official claimed that Nimbus told the BCCI that they could make a substantial amount of money if the Pakistan series took place. But the official pointed out that a Pakistan tour was not in the hands of the BCCI as it is a political decision more than a cricketing one.As a point of comparison, the first official cited the example of Multi Screen Media (MSM), which owns the broadcasting rights for the IPL. “MSM have never given us any cause for concern and have submitted the dues on their own. As far as the BCCI is concerned, Nimbus is history.”Another issue that came up was Nimbus’ promotion of World Series Hockey, for which it has broadcasting rights, during the West Indies series. “Without our permission, Nimbus was promoting World Series Hockey,’ the official said. “How can they do that, especially using us?”On Thursday, the Bombay High Court ruled that the BCCI could not invoke bank guarantees worth Rs 1600 crores (approximately $300 million) given by Nimbus and the board is reported to be discussing how to recover that money with its legal team. The BCCI is also likely to hold a special working committee meeting where bids for a fresh broadcasting contract can be discussed.

Farhad Hossain stars in Rajshahi win

Away at the Zohur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong were upturned by a spirited Rajshahi by eight wickets, thanks to captain Farhad Reza, who picked up five second-innings wickets to help bowl out the home side for only 155 runs. After Chittagong made 378 in the first innings, Rajshahi took a 75-run lead thanks to Farhad Hossain’s double century. Faisal Hossain battled for Chiattagong in the second innings, making 71 off 112 balls, but it was not enough for the southeastern division. Rajshahi needed only 83 for the win and they completed the task in 19.2 overs, with Mizanur Rahman hammering an unbeaten half-century.Dhaka Metropolis continued their excellent start when they beat Barisal by 237 runs in the third round of the National Cricket League at the Sylhet Stadium. After their victories over Rajshahi and Dhaka, they completed a hat-trick of wins on their return to the first-class competition by crushing a depleted Barisal side that was missing on national and A team duties.Set a mammoth 516 for a win after Dhaka had extended their first-innings lead by an additional 185 runs, Barisal battled haplessly on the final day as they were bowled out for 278 in 96.1 overs. Nuruzzaman struck an unbeaten 88 while Salman Hossain scored 48. For Dhaka, fast bowler Tareq Aziz took three wickets while Arafat Salahuddin and Mohammad Ashraful picked up two each. Two games ended on the first day with Sylhet breaking their five-year first-class duck by beating Rangpur by an innings and 173 runs at the Fatullah Cricket Stadium. It was also their first win by an innings since 2002.Riding on Rajin Saleh’s 132 in the first innings, Sylhet bowled out Rangpur for 138 and 112 respectively, with Abu Jayed picking up nine wickets in the game. The win would do a lot of good to the division’s psyche as they have been the whipping boys of NCL.In the other game that ended inside three days, Khulna beat Dhaka by 91 runs in Jessore. Dhaka were always behind the eight-ball after conceding a 66-run lead to Khulna in the first innings after Abdur Razzak picked up four wickets for the southwestern division. Set a 286-run target, Dhaka struggled as Kulna, minus Razzak, whose mother died on Monday evening, skittled them for 194. Left-arm spinner Taposh Ghosh took five for 51, with only Taibur Rahman scoring a fifty. The teams now go on Eid vacation and will return on November 12.

Mohammad Saad, bowlers lead Lahore Ravi to big win

A round-up of the action from the fifth round of matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Division Two

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Nov-2011Lahore Ravi completed a whopping innings and 185-run victory over Quetta within three days at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. Mohammad Saad went on to add over a 100 runs to his overnight score of 84 and steered the hosts to 487 for 9. He fell for 188, but by then Lahore Ravi had secured a 315-run first-innings lead. Emmad Ali and Asif Ashfaq then went on to destroy the Quetta top order, while Waqas Aslam polished off the tail. If it hadn’t been for an unbeaten fifty from captain Taimur Khan, the margin of defeat would have been much worse for Quetta. On the third day at the Niaz Stadium in Sind, Karachi Whites’ bowlers set their team up for an easy, big win against Hyderabad. Hyderabad had resumed on 161 for 5 in reply to Karachi Whites’ 371, and promptly collapsed in the morning session. They folded for 197 courtesy incisive spells from Tabish Khan and Ali Mudassar, Karachi Whites’ new-ball pair. Akbar-ur-Rehman enforced the follow and another collapse ensued. In their second innings Hyderabad went from 43 for 0 to 111 for 8, before a half-century stand between Mir Ali and Zahid Mahmood prevented an innings’ defeat. Spinner Faraz Khan was the pick of the bowlers this time round, claiming 4 for 68. Ali fell for 86 just prior to stumps, as Hyderabad finished 36 ahead with one wicket in hand.United Bank Limited (UBL) set Lahore Shalimar an imposing target of 385, and then prised out two wickets late on day three to edge ahead at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. UBL’s first-innings’ lead of 112 was built on by their opener Mohammad Sami, who made 110 and they declared at 272 for 5. Lahore Shalimar’s openers looked settled in – they had put on 62 – before a double-strike from left-arm spinner Kashif Bhatti left them wobbling at stumps.Akbar Badshah and Jamaluddin put on a century partnership to steer Peshawar into a position of dominance against Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) at the Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar. The pair’s stand was the backbone of the host’s second innings and, though they folded for 196, gave them a 300-run lead. Bilawal Bhatti was the pick with the ball, completing a five-for. SNGPL were then in big trouble at 31 for 3, before a steadying, unbroken 61-run partnership between Khurram Shehzad and Ali Waqas took them to 92 for 3 at stumps, setting up an interesting final day.Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) took control of their game against Multan on the second day at the Multan Cricket Stadium. Their new-ball pair of Yasir Arafat and Rahat Ali combined to restrict the hosts to 129 in their first innings, in reply to 304. Multan was made to follow on and lost three wickets cheaply again. Moinuddin, though, scored Multan’s first half-century of the match and went to stumps unbeaten. He will be a key if they are to wipe out the 98-run deficit on day three and make KRL bat again in this game.

Seamers make it Peshawar's day

Peshwar’s trio of seamers – Riaz Afridi, Waqar Ahmed and Afaq Ahmed – bowled Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited out for 202 on the first day of the final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Division Two 2011-12

SNGPL chose to bat but lost a wicket off the second ball, Afridi dismissing Naeemuddin. After a 62-run partnership between Azeem Ghumman and Ali Waqas, wickets fell regularly. Afridi and Waqar ripped through the top order, and then Afaq made sure the tail did not wag.Waqar, who was second in the wicket-charts during the group phase, took 3 for 80, Afridi had 4 for 55, and Afaq finished with 3 for 48. Usman Arshad’s 41 was SNGPL’s top score. Four other batsmen got starts but there were also five single-digit scores and SNGPL slumped to a disappointing total.Peshawar got off to a blazing start in their response, with the openers putting together a partnership of 82 runs in just 12.1 overs. Israrullah was dismissed for 36 and Iftikhar Ahmed fell for a first-ball duck to give SNGPL some respite at the end of the day. But Mohammad Fayyaz was 43 not out off 40 balls at stumps and Peshawar will look to get the first-innings lead on the second day.
