Vaas pegs Middlesex progress

Scott Newman hit 75, his highest score in the County Championship thisseason, and Chris Rogers made 67 on a rain-shortened day at Lord’s.However, Chaminda Vaas kept Division Two leaders Northamptonshire in the gameagainst Middlesex – their closest challengers. Newman and Rogers put on 101 runs in 24 overs after Middlesex, who began the game five points behind Northamptonshire with a game in hand, had been put into bat. However Vaas took three wickets in two overs and they closed on 198 for 6.Rain had delayed the start until after lunch and held up play again in theafternoon but Newman made light of the conditions. The hosts lost Sam Robson early, caught behind down the leg side off Luke Evans – making his first championship appearance of the season in place of the injured Jack Brooks.Newman, who had made only one championship half-century this summer, had made75 off 115 balls with 11 fours and a six when he called for a sharp single toextra cover and was run out by Alex Wakeley’s direct hit.It was a breakthrough that Northamptonshire captain Andrew Hall, who saw Newmandropped at second slip on 61, badly needed and he was a much happier man whenVaas followed it up with a telling spell. The Sri Lankan, who once played for Middlesex, claimed Dawid Malan leg beforewicket pushing forward and then had Neil Dexter and Jamie Dalrymple caughtbehind by wicketkeeper Niall O’Brien off successive balls. The game had been turned on its head and Hall’s decision to field first wasvindicated when Rogers chopped the ball into his stumps trying to cut.

Tim Paine set for surgery on finger

Tim Paine has been ruled out of Australia’s tour of South Africa next month due to a finger injury, which is likely to open the door for Matthew Wade to make his international debut

ESPNcricinfo staff26-Sep-2011Tim Paine has been ruled out of Australia’s tour of South Africa next month due to a finger injury, which is likely to open the door for Matthew Wade to make his international debut. Paine will have surgery later this week following a slower than expected recovery after he hurt his right index finger while batting at a Tasmania training session a month ago.The decision for Paine to have an operation means that Australia will need to find a new wicketkeeper for the two Twenty20s against South Africa on October 13 and 16 in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Brad Haddin last week announced his retirement from Twenty20 internationals, which is likely to make Wade the favourite for a national call-up.Wade, 23, has played for Australia A over the past 18 months and was productive for Victoria last summer, when he finished second behind Brad Hodge on the Ryobi Cup run tally and also score 553 Sheffield Shield runs. It would be a major surprise if Wade was not chosen, with Chris Hartley having hardly been used in T20 by Queensland over the past two seasons, and Western Australia’s Luke Ronchi having slipped down the pecking order. And while the T20s in South Africa are the immediate opportunity, there could be further chances to provide backup for Haddin in one-day or Test cricket, depending on how long Paine is sidelined. Australia’s physiotherapist, Alex Kountouris, said Paine was still experiencing significant discomfort a month after sustaining the injury.”Tim Paine injured his right index finger batting at training with his Tasmanian state team four weeks ago,” Kountouris said. “He sustained a fracture in a similar part of the same finger late last year and required surgery. Tim has been resting the injury in recent weeks but is still experiencing considerable pain.”His surgeon has advised that the fracture is healing slower than expected and may not heal without surgical intervention. As such, Tim will be undergoing surgery later this week. He is likely to need an extended recovery period following surgery and will not be available for selection for the T20 and ODI tour of South Africa.”Paine is not the only one of Australia’s contracted players set for surgery, with the allrounder John Hastings likely to have an operation on his right shoulder. Hastings suffered the injury while training with Victoria and he too will be out of action for the T20 and one-day series in South Africa.”John Hastings injured his right shoulder during a training session with Cricket Victoria after returning from Australian duties in Sri Lanka,” Kountouris said. “He has had ongoing shoulder pain since this incident and has been unable to return to training. He has consulted a surgeon who has recommended surgery.”It is possible that he will have surgery sometime in the next week after further assessment from the surgeon. His return to cricket will be dependent on the management approach pursued but he will not be available for selection for the T20 and ODI tour of South Africa.”

Kolkata matches switched to Bangalore, Hyderabad

Heavy rain in Kolkata has forced the Champions League Twenty20 governing council to move the four scheduled matches at Eden Gardens to Hyderabad and Bangalore, subject to approval from the local authorities. The Group B matches scheduled for September 25 and 27 will now take place in Hyderabad, while the match on September 29 involving Royal Challengers Bangalore and a team from the current qualifier will be played in Bangalore.”With regret and in the best interests of the tournament, CAB [Cricket Association of Bengal] and CLT20 have reluctantly agreed to moving its four scheduled Group B matches away from Eden Gardens due to the heavy rains that have deluged Kolkata,” Jagmohan Dalmiya, the president of CAB, said in a statement.”We’re disappointed that we’re not able to host the matches, but this decision was unavoidable and taken out of our hands due to the current weather conditions. We wish CLT20 luck for the tournament and hope CAB will have the chance to host the event in the coming years.”

Shehzad ton takes HBL to victory

A round-up of the action from the fourth day of the second round of Division One matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff15-Oct-2011Ahmed Shehzad scored a sparkling century to help Habib Bank Limited clinch a three-wicket win over Abbottabad while chasing 368 at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium. HBL began the day with all ten wickets intact and Shehzad approached the task with aggression, smashing 161 in 162 balls, including 26 fours and a six. He added a decisive 234 for the opening wicket with Shan Masood, who was the calmer, more sedate of the two partners. Their stand set up the foundation for a win. Abbottabad, however, made inroads and would have sensed the possibility of a victory at 337 for 7. But Hasan Raza remained unbeaten on 36 while Danish Kaneria made an quickfire 32 to help his team seal victory.Water and Power Development Authority completed the formalities on the final day, beating Faisalabad by seven wickets at the Sports Stadium in Sargodha. They had been resting easy at 205 for 3 overnight, chasing 260, and Aamer Sajjad and captain Naved-ul-Hasan ensured there was no damage done, seeing their team through to victory. The contest between National Bank of Pakistan and Islamabad ended in a thrilling draw at the Diamond Club Ground. NBP were set 303 to win and the game was there for the taking after Khurram Manzoor and Nasir Jamshed added 192 for the opening wicket. Khurram made 107 and Jamshed contributed 85 off 122 balls. But thereafter, the innings began to slide. Afaq Raheem’s offspinners played a decisive role, as he picked up six wickets to undermine the foundation laid by the opening stand. NBP lost wickets at regular intervals and slipped to 259 for 8, with Islamabad sensing a win now. But Raza Hasan and Uzair-ul-Haq batted cautiously through to the finish. In the end, NBP finished with 287 for 8; they’ll undoubtedly regret not taking advantage of that opening stand.Karachi Blues didn’t take long to beat Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited at the National Stadium in Karachi. ZTBL had been reeling at 174 for 6 after following on and the Karachi bowlers polished off the tail, taking just eight overs to capture the remaining four wickets. Seamer Mohammad Sami finished with a five-for, while Tariq Haroon took 4 for 51. Karachi were victors by an innings and 112 runs.Rawalpindi had an excellent chance of clinching victory against Pakistan International Airlines at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, but fell short by 18 runs and had to settle for a draw. PIA had enjoyed the better of the contest for three days but they came close to losing on the fourth. From 185 for 2 overnight, they slipped to 229 for 8 in search of quick runs and declared, setting Rawalpindi a target of 354 in 71 overs. Nasir Malik picked up five wickets. In the chase, opener Naved Malik led the way with 139 and though Rawalpindi seemed to be losing their way, reduced to 124 for 4 at one stage, they fought back superbly. Adnan Mufti blasted 57 off 39 balls to add 122 in quick time with Naved, and took Rawalpindi closer to the target. Mohammad Rameez then came in and finished unbeaten on 59, off 44 balls, including five fours and two sixes. However, the acceleration came a little late as Rawalpindi couldn’t reach the target in the allotted number of overs.State Bank of Pakistan ensured their contest against Sialkot at the Jinnah Stadium ended in a draw. SBP would have begun the day thinking of a draw as they were only 36 runs ahead overnight. A five-wicket haul from Prince Abbas threatened to upset their plans but a collective batting effort in the end, with much-needed support from the lower order, helped them save the game. Rameez Raja chipped in with 42 while the rest of the top and middle orders got starts. However, the team was still in some trouble at 126 for 6. But Gulraiz Sadaf ended any Sialkot hopes of a surprise win, batting determinedly for his unbeaten 72 with support from Rizwan Haider. SBP were eventually bowled out for 220, Sialkot could only bat five overs in the fourth innings.

Mahmudullah stars in Bangladesh A win

An all-round effort from Mahmudullah helped Bangladesh A hand Bangladesh Cricket Board Academy their second defeat in the Bangladesh Cricket Board Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Sep-2011
ScorecardBangladesh allrounder Mahmudullah turned in a fine allround performance as Bangladesh A handed Bangladesh Cricket Board Academy (BCBA) their second straight defeat at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, this one by 56 runs. BCBA were bowled out for 76 against Bangladesh in their first game, and while their batsmen performed better this time around, it wasn’t enough to prevent another loss.Having chosen to field, BCBA’s bowlers made a bright start, reducing Bangladesh A to 48 for 3 in the 15th over. Mahmudullah then steadied the innings with 54 from 69 balls to ease them out of trouble. He shared in two partnerships of over 40 with Naeem Islam (17) and Shamshur Rahman (18) and after he fell on 160, the lower order carried the team past 200. Three other batsmen got into the 20s, but none could carry on, with Elias Sunny, who made 25, the second highest scorer. Alauddin Babu was the most successful bowler, taking 3 for 51, while Sohag Gazi took 2 for 29.BCBA made a positive start to their chase, despite losing Abdul Mazid early, but slumped from 52 for 1 in the 14th over to 60 for 4 in the 17th over. They were never in the game after that, losing wickets are regular intervals, and Mahmudullah knocked over the last two batsmen to finish with figures of 2 for 21 and earn the Man-of-the-Match award.

Warner wants to bat longer and hit harder

David Warner, the Australia batsmen, is at his most ruthless when talking about himself. Although he does not think he has ever struck the ball as sweetly as he is doing at the moment, he still sees the potential to go harder after having realised the importance of taking time to build an innings, even in the shortest format.Warner faced only one ball before being run-out in the first Twenty20 international on Thursday, but after back-to-back centuries in the Champions League T20, he looks in ominous form. “In India it was tough and I had to grind my way through to the middle overs and be there at the end,” Warner said. “I feel like I’m hitting the ball really well but if I wanted to be harsher on myself, I could probably hit them better as well.”As one of the most dangerous T20 players, Warner has been stereotyped as a batting brute but he said there is some art that goes into constructing an innings in the shortest form of the game. “You’ve still got to get yourself in, I’ve only just realised that the last couple of months,” Warner said. “When I’ve got myself in I could actually see, not how not easy it is, but how much you can get in the last five overs.” Those are words that signify that Warner intends to bat longer and that can only mean the opposition must brace themselves for more sustained assaults.Warner is not necessarily aiming at becoming the best T20 batsmen in the world, but he “just wants to be recognised as a person in the team who is going to win matches.” In his debut against South Africa, at the MCG in 2009, he was that person. His 89 came off just 43 balls and announced that batting in fast-forward mode was the way he would play his game. Although he has not scaled that score on the international scene, he does have three domestic T20 centuries and has developed his game to include shots like the switch-hit.”Normally just left-handed he is dangerous, but now with the switch-hit, it makes him a unique player and someone you must try to stay one step ahead of,” Johan Botha said. Pioneered by Kevin Pietersen, the stroke can thread uncertainty through the opposition but playing it requires careful timing, according to Warner. “It’s one of those things where if it’s the right time of the game and obviously if we’re not under pressure I can play it,” Warner said. “I’ve to be smart as well and make sure it’s not in a silly point of the game where it’s going to hurt the team.”Warner’s evolution as a T20 player has had some asking whether he has ambitions to play in other formats. He said that he would like to show his ability in the upcoming one-day series. “It’s been two years since I played a one-day game for Australia and I’ve learnt a lot in that time, so hopefully I can be a bit more patient.”For some, changing to a longer version of the game would mean a different strategy in the nets but Warner’s instincts remain the same. “I like trying to get bat on ball so that’s what I try and do,” he said. “I do a lot of throw downs in the nets and when I’m batting, it’s one of those things where if you get out, you’ve got to be strict on yourself, and say if you get out more than once you should actually walk out of there and say that’s a pretty disappointing net session.”Warner also has ambitions of making the leap up to Test cricket but understands that missing out first-class games at home could peg that aim back a little while. “The only way I’m going to get there is if I keep scoring runs,” he said, adding that the ability to be more dependable and less flashy may have to find its way into his game. “I haven’t been consistent enough, a lot of people have said that and I know that for a fact, and that’s one thing now that I’ve shown the last couple of innings, that I’m being more consistent,” he said. “I’m actually getting myself in and not throwing it away. I’ll keep aspiring to be more consistent and hopefully one day I will get that Test cap.”
