What could go wrong, went wrong – Dhoni

MS Dhoni said India suffered several misfortunes during the first Test at Lord’s which made their job difficult

Nagraj Gollapudi at Lord's25-Jul-2011No confirmation on Zaheer availability

There is no final word on Zaheer Khan’s availability for the second Test. Asked if Zaheer was expected to be fit for the match, which starts on July 29, Dhoni was skeptical. “We have three days but I am not 100% sure if we will play him or not. It is a long series and we don’t want to risk any individual if he is only 90% fit as that only increases the chances of him getting injured further. It is very important to get the guys fully fit.”

So who’s to blame for India’s defeat? MS Dhoni, for putting England in to bat? India’s senior batsmen, for playing shots that, to the distant eye, seemed unnecessary? Harbhajan Singh, for yet again failing to have an impact on a match? Or even the under-preparedness of the India players, most of whom were struggling to come to terms with conditions at the practice match in Somerset?Dhoni himself blamed the loss of Zaheer Khan, his strike bowler, to a hamstring injury on the first afternoon. He blamed the absence of a third fast bowler to assist Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar. He blamed a surface that did not assist turn on the first two days and relegated his lead spinner Harbhajan to playing the role of a sandbag for Kevin Pietersen in the first innings. He blamed the circumstances that forced the batting order to be completely reshuffled in the second innings.”Most of the things that could have gone wrong in the game went wrong. It was tough for both the bowlers and the batsmen,” Dhoni said with a resigned look at the media conference. The turning point in the Test came on the first afternoon, when Zaheer stopped mid-stride and then walked off to the dressing room with a hamstring injury. It was a bad setback for Zaheer, who was starting to dominate the England batsmen and had dismissed openers Andrew Strauss and Alastair Cook.England’s confidence rose and Pietersen rode roughshod over an Indian bowling attack comprising two fast bowlers who were playing their maiden Test in England, and a spinner who had been rendered impotent by the conditions.”It became quite tough for us after losing Zaheer Khan on the first day,” Dhoni said. “It was very difficult to bowl with three bowlers. The pitch did not take too much turn on the first two days and we did not have too many options. So it was quite difficult in terms of resources.”Praveen and Ishant toiled hard in Zaheer’s absence, and improved as the game went on. Praveen recovered from first-morning-Lord’s nerves to bounce back with controlled swing and bag a maiden five-for in the first innings, and Ishant injected a renewed sense of purpose into India with an energetic spell of seam bowling on the fourth morning. India missed out on a third seamer, though, which Dhoni said made all the difference. “We just needed that one extra bowler and things could have been different but it is something that you can’t really do anything about as injuries happen.”An injury to Zaheer Khan meant MS Dhoni was forced to bowl himself during the Test•Getty Images

Harbhajan, India’s most experienced bowler, wore a deflated look for most of the Test and his match figures of 56-4-218-1 only raised questions about his position as lead spinner. Dhoni, though, did not appear too bothered. “I saw a lot of improvement [in Harbhajan]. He bowled a lot slower in this game. It was slightly tough on him, especially when Pietersen was set and began going after him. There was no turn to deceive the batsman. But I was really impressed with the pace at which Harbhajan bowled. As the series progresses, it will be really interesting to see him bowl at some of the venues that are known to assist spin.”With their bowling in a shambles, India’s chances of escaping the first Test with a draw hinged exclusively on their vaunted batting order. No batsman, barring Rahul Dravid, lasted long enough in the first innings. On the last morning, India were 378 runs adrift of the huge target set by England. In the absence of Virender Sehwag, a victory was unimaginable. A draw, though, was possible, especially in conditions that were tough but not unplayable.Yet the highest partnership in the second innings was 75 runs, between Dravid and VVS Laxman for the second wicket, closely followed by the 60-run alliance between Dhoni and Suresh Raina for the sixth wicket. While England had three 100-plus stands in the match, India had none. Dhoni defended his batsmen, pointing to the fact that an injury to Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar’s illness had forced a reshuffle in the batting order.”Yes, we could have done with one more partnership from the top-order batsmen. But it was tough because most of our batsmen were batting in slots different to their original number. Rahul opened, Sachin batted at a different number, Gautam batted at a different number. That also added pressure.”The India batsmen also struggled to come to terms with the inconsistent bounce, he said. “As the Test progressed, what we saw was variable bounce, which meant we couldn’t really leave deliveries on length saying it was a three-quarter length delivery and would go over the stumps. So, more often than not, we were forced to play deliveries and we chased them.”Comparing the current Lord’s track to what he encountered on India’s tour in 2007, when he helped save the first Test for India with an unbeaten half-century, Dhoni claimed the bounce was more even four years ago. “This time there were many occasions when the ball did not comfortably travel to the keeper so the variable bounce did have an impact.”

Lancashire charge to 10-wicket win

Scorecard
Junaid Khan starred as Lancashire continued their climb up the North Division with a thumping 10-wicket Friends Life t20 win over Derbyshire at Old Trafford. The Pakistan left-arm seamer bowled with pace as he picked up three wickets for the first time in his fledgling career to restrict the visitors to just 81 for eight after captain Luke Sutton had elected to bat first. Lancashire opener Stephen Moore then made a mockery of the visiting total with 54 not out off 33 balls, including four sixes, as the win was secured with 11 overs to spare. This was the hosts second 10-wicket win this summer and only the third of their history. It was also the fastest ever 10-wicket win in the history of English Twenty20 cricket. Junaid, 21, who also took two wickets in Friday’s win over Durham, struck twice in his first two overs today, getting both Wes Durston and Garry Park caught behind by Gareth Cross to help leave Derbyshire 24 for 3 in the fifth over.Junaid also held a tough high chance at mid-on in the next over to help fellow overseas player Farveez Maharoof get rid of the dangerous Martin Guptill for eight. Derbyshire, who started the game level with their hosts on 10 points from 11 matches, never recovered as they posted the lowest total in their 20-over history.Chesney Hughes and Ross Whiteley tried to mount a Falcons’ fightback with a stand of 29 for the fifth wicket but the former played on to Maharoof in the 13th. Lightning spinners Stephen Parry and Gary Keedy also struck, as did Sajid Mahmood, before Junaid returned at the death to bowl Jon Clare and complete figures of three for 12.Left-handed Hughes top-scored with only 16 as the woeful Falcons recorded the fifth lowest total in English Twenty20, making only four boundaries in the innings. Moore then blazed a trail at the top of the Lancashire order in reply.Moore and Tom Smith posted 28 off the first three overs, the former racing to 32 from 18 balls, including straight sixes off Durston’s off-spin and Clare’s medium pace. Smith survived a rare drop from New Zealand’s Guptill off Durston and the batsmen brought up their 50 stand in the sixth over, their fifth in this season’s competition.Moore hit his third six off Clare before Smith got in on the act by slog-sweeping Hughes. Moore’s fourth six, also off Hughes, brought up a 32-ball half century as Derbyshire were put to the sword.

Coles burst halts Middlesex progress

An impressive three-wicket burst by Kent all-rounder Matt Coles haltedMiddlesex progress and left honours pretty much even at the mid-point of the County Championship Division Two clash in Canterbury. When drizzle and bad light reached the St Lawrence ground at 4.15pm thevisitors had stumbled to 258 for seven – an overall advantage of only 16 runs asthey replied to the home side’s 242. Sitting pretty at 99 without loss and then looking good at 147 for 1, Middlesex struggled throughout an overcast mid-session when Kent skipper Rob Keyfinally allowed Coles off the leash.Key used five bowlers in a fairly turgid first session that saw Middlesex add104 for two wickets, and Cole was not amongst them. Having posted 34 Scott Newman tossed away his wicket when he flailed outside off stump against Wahab Riaz to be caught low down at slip.Chris Rogers, having scored an impeccable 28, charged down the wicket to DarrenStevens only to slice a drive to Azhar Mahmood in the gully. Middlesex started to regroup after lunch through Australian Sam Robson, strong off the back foot, and the elegant Dawid Malan, who curbed his attacking instincts to hold the innings together. They added 57 without trouble until Key finally introduced Coles soon after 2pmto reap havoc as the visitors lost four for five in the space of 31 balls. Robson’s near three hour stay was ended when he nicked a quick ball to the keeper then former Kent all-rounder Neil Dexter prodded forward to the next delivery from Coles to go without troubling the scorers.Five runs on off-spinner James Tredwell followed Coles’ lead by also taking twowickets in as many deliveries. He had Jamie Dalrymple caught bat-pad at backward short leg and then snared John Simpson for a golden duck, leg before to an arm-ball.Coles then returned to skittle Tom Smith for 13 with a swinging yorker thatproved just too quick for the young right-hander and made it 238 for seven. After another short delay for rain an unusually watchful Malan ploughed on fora shade over two hours for a 108 ball half-century and was still there when badlight forced an early finish.

Gayle meets board chief but future remains unclear

Chris Gayle and WICB chief Ernest Hilaire have met in an attempt to resolve issues that are keeping the opener out of international cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Aug-2011Chris Gayle, the West Indies batsman, and WICB chief Ernest Hilaire have held a one-on-one meeting in an attempt to resolve issues that are keeping the opener out of international cricket. Though there was no major breakthrough in the hour-long discussion at the WICB head office in Antigua on Tuesday, it was still a step forward from the acrimonious meeting in June that worsened relations between the two sides.Hilaire, the board CEO, was cautious when asked about how the meeting went. “We took a decision yesterday not to discuss the matter that is currently in front of us while it is still unresolved,” Hilaire told . “What I can tell you is that we had a frank and excellent discussion.”Relations between Gayle and the board reached breaking point after he gave an interview in April to a radio station during which he was scathing about both the board and coach Ottis Gibson. The Gayle-WICB standoff was sparked off when Gibson criticised senior batsmen following the team’s quarter-final exit at the World Cup. Gayle was subsequently ignored for the home series against Pakistan, after which he travelled to India to participate in the IPL – where he was the player of the tournament – while the WICB were under the impression he was undergoing rehabilitation. The heated meeting in June with West Indies Players’ Association representatives present didn’t resolve the problem, and Gayle released an emotional public statement in July explaining his stance. The CARICOM heads of government have also given a commitment to mediate in the dispute.

Scotland stay on top with hard-fought win

Scotland Under-19s beat Kenya Under-19s by 15 runs in a low scoring match at Woodvale Road, Eglinton, to stay at the top of the points table. After choosing to bat, Scotland were in trouble at 77 for 6 before a 65-run partnership between Anjan Luthra and Sam Page revived the innings. Page, who top scored with 48 built another handy stand with Kyle Smith as Scotland reached a respectable 188. The only substantial contributions in Kenya’s chase came from opener Rushabh Patel – who scored 50 – and No. 3 batsman Duncan Allan, with 43. The pair added 83 for the second wicket, but once they were dismissed in consecutive overs, the chase faltered, with Kenya managing only 173 for 8 in their 50.Wicketkeeper Mathew Cross, who had been the lone performer among Scotland’s top order and was part of five dismissals in the fiels – including those of Patel and Allan – was named Man of the Match. “We would have been happy with a score of 210-220, but still, to reach 188 after being six down early on was a big effort,” Cross said. “When Kenya batted, we felt that one wicket could change the match. Allan fell at the right time for us to fight back. We dried up the runs [after that] and the asking-rate increased.”At Lodge Road, Coleraine, Nepal Under-19s beat Papua New Guinea Under-19s by 29 runs and moved into the second spot on the points table. Batting first, Nepal scored 277 for 7, driven by a fluent 91 from Rajesh Pulami Magar. Magar’s knock, which included eight fours and a six, was cut short when he was run out by PNG keeper Dogodo Bau. Opener Sagar Pun and Pradeep Airee also scored half-centuries as Nepal finished with 277 for 7. Vagi Oala and Christopher Kent were the main contributors in the chase, scoring 64 and 80 respectively. However, a penetrative spell from left-arm fast bowler Avinash Karn – he picked up a five-for in 6.3 overs – made sure PNG were always behind, eventually folding for 248 with three balls to spare.Magar, who was named Man of the Match, said his team was wary of PNG replicating their successful chase against Canada in the previous round of matches. “We lost a few wickets early on, so I had to stay at the wicket and build a partnership,” he said. “PNG chased down Canada’s score of 266 yesterday and we were a bit wary of their ability to chase the score. But our bowlers bowled brilliantly and restricted them very well.”Canada Under-19s eased to a five-wicket win against USA Under-19s at the Bready Cricket Club No2 Ground, Magheramason. Asked to bowl, Canada shot out USA for 101 in 40.3 overs, courtesy a six-wicket haul from opening bowler Manny Aulakh. The chase was steered by a rapid 42 from Rayyan Pathan, who struck five sixes in his 42 off 29 balls. Though USA managed to pick up five wickets, Canada were never stretched, getting home with 16.4 overs to spare.Aulakh, the Man of the Match, said the pitch assisted the quicks. “There was something in the pitch for the fast bowlers. We stuck to the basics and they [USA] made a few mistakes. This was one of my best spells.”At the Bready Cricket Club Afghanistan Under-19s registered a comprehensive nine-wicket win against Vanuatu Under-19s. Afghanistan justified their decision to bowl, running through Vanuatu in 26.2 overs. The attack was led by left-armer Sayed Shirzad, who claimed 5 for 38 in nine overs. He was well supported by Yamin Ahmadzai and Abdul Naseri, who picked up two apiece. Chasing 112, Afghanistan lost an early wicket, but were solid thereafter with Javed Ahmadi and Hashmatullah Shaidi knocking off the target at over seven runs an over.Man-of-the-Match Shirzad said Afghanistan were pumped up as it was a must-win match for them. “It was do or die for us, we had to win to stay in the hunt,” he said. “I bowled wicket to wicket and that paid rich dividends.”Ireland Under-19s‘s match against Namibia Under-19s at New Strabane Park was washed-out after only eight overs. The match will be replayed on Monday. Ireland need a win to regain the second spot on the points table.

Root's maiden ton hauls Yorkshire back

Scorecard
Joe Root scored a classic maiden first-class century to put Yorkshire back inthe match on the second day of their County Championship clash againstSussex at Scarborough. The 20-year-old England Lions batsman, who also plays for Sheffield Collegiate, the same club for who Michael Vaughan first stepped out, was still there at theclose with 111 as Yorkshire reached 251 for 4 in 45 overs. Root’s chanceless century came off 188 deliveries and contained 18 cleanly-struck boundaries.Replying shortly before lunch to the visitors’ first-innings score of 398,Yorkshire suffered a blow in the third over when acting captain Jacques Rudolphwas out for only a single, the South African being tempted into a drive by WayneParnell and edging to wicketkeeper Ben Brown.Parnell struck again after the interval by trapping Joe Sayers lbw but hisnew-ball partner, James Anyon, went unrewarded for a fine spell of decidedlyquick seam bowling. Root, coming in at the fall of Rudolph’s wicket, was helped in repairing theearly damage by Anthony McGrath, and they moved the score on to 81 beforeMcGrath was lbw to Amjad Khan for 29.Another useful stand developed between Root and Jonny Bairstow with Rootpulling Khan fiercely for four to complete his fifth half-century of the seasonoff 83 balls with 10 boundaries. They had taken their partnership to 71 by tea but only four had been added inthe final session when Bairstow fell for 33 to a tumbling catch at first slip byMike Yardy to give James Anyon a much deserved wicket at the start of his secondspell. With Yorkshire 156 for 4, Gary Ballance came in to continue his good run ofform and he carved Anyon over the top of third man for six.Runs were coming rapidly but when Ballance swept hard at Monty Panesar hestruck Chris Nash a painful blow on the arm at short leg and had to leave thefield for treatment.Root was looking a class act and consecutive boundaries off Panesar and astraight drive for four at Kirk Wernars’ expense pushed him into the 90s. Hereached his century by slapping a loose ball from Anyon to the cover boundary toreceive a standing ovation. Ballance was 45 at stumps and his unbroken fifth-wicket partnership with Root was worth 95, Yorkshire having reduced the first-innings deficit to 147.Sussex had a chance to take control of the game when they resumed in themorning on 335 for 5 with Yardy on 126 and Wernars 16, but Yorkshire hit backwell by claiming the last five wickets for 63.In the day’s first over, Yardy glanced Ryan Sidebottom for four but the nextball he edged into Bairstow’s gloves to give the former England left-arm pacemanhis first five-wicket haul since returning to his native county at the start ofthe season. Richard Pyrah chipped in with two wickets in three balls as Parnell hookedstraight to Sidebottom at long leg and Wernars chopped into his stumps. The first eight wickets of the Sussex innings had fallen to pace butleg-spinner Adil Rashid, came on to snuff out the tail by gaining lbw verdictsagainst both Khan and Panesar.Soon after midday, with umpire Trevor Jesty off the field for an hour with asickness complaint, former Yorkshire and England all-rounder Craig White, nowthe county’s deputy director of cricket, came on to stand at square leg for afew overs until being replaced by 75-year-old local umpire Fred Bernard. Bernard returned an hour before the close when Jesty was forced from the field again.
