New SA coach likely to be named on June 6

South Africa have completed the interview process to appoint a new national coach

Firdose Moonda17-May-2011Cricket South Africa (CSA) is likely to announce the new national coach on June 6. A specially appointed CSA panel met the candidates in Johannesburg on Monday and will discuss the appointment on Tuesday. The interview committee includes CSA chief executive Gerald Majola, outgoing coach Corrie van Zyl, cricket committee chairperson Andy O’Connor, players’ association representative Boeta Dippenaar, convenor of selectors Andrew Hudson and Professor Johann Coetzee, a human development expert. “The panel will meet today [Tuesday] to have a discussion around the interviews that were conducted,” a source told ESPNCricinfo.CSA has not revealed the names on the shortlist, which it had initially said consisted of six names. The only clues as to who might be in the running came from the interview venue, a hotel in the upmarket suburb of Sandton. Gary Kirsten, widely considered to be the frontrunner for the job, and former Pakistan coach Richard Pybus were seen there. According to the source, all interviews were conducted in person.Kirsten has just returned from a two-year stint in India, during which India climbed to the top of the Test rankings, and culminated in the winning of the World Cup. He has indicated that he would like to spend more time with his family in South Africa and with a third child due in November, it remains to be seen how much travel Kirsten would be willing to do.Pybus is currently in charge of the Cape Town based Cobras franchise and was previously involved with the Titans. He has been involved with South African cricket since 2003 and is widely acclaimed for his innovative and creative coaching methods.Duncan Fletcher and John Buchanan, who were believed to be on the shortlist, accepted positions in India and New Zealand respectively, before the interview process began. Others reportedly in contention for the job are Tom Moody, Stephen Fleming and Vincent Barnes.

Kirby shows teeth but Lancashire regroup

Stumps
Scorecard
For the second day running, Lancashire recovered from a difficult first session to take the upper hand, this time repelling Steve Kirby’s efforts to remind them forcibly of his local roots to establish a useful lead, much to the pleasure of another sizeable crowd, who turned out not just to enjoy the sunshine but to show their appreciation for Liverpool’s temporary status as the county’s headquarters.Around 1,300 spectators have turned out on each of the first two days, their presence lending an old-fashioned festive atmosphere to this pleasant tree-lined ground with its splendid Victorian pavilion. The club is equally renowned for producing a good cricket wicket and Kirby, born in Bury and a young player for Heywood, near Rochdale, clearly felt at home, his figures of 5 for 79 not really doing justice to how well he bowled, particularly in the morning and early afternoon, when he found the right length to allow the ball to swing away late and threatened to demolish Lancashire on his own, exacting revenge, perhaps, for being overlooked by them in his youth. It was down to him, certainly, that Lancashire lost their way a little after Paul Horton and Stephen Moore had put on 93 for the first wicket, making it appear that Somerset’s 268 might have been a good score after all. After Kirby had taken his first four wickets, Lancashire had a good deal of repair work to do at 169 for 5.But as Kirby tired and no one stepped up in an effective supporting role, a stand of 113 between Gareth Cross and Tom Smith for the sixth wicket swung the day back in Lancashire’s favour, with the Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof — inspired by the opportunity to take on his compatriot, Ajantha Mendis — chipping in with an unbeaten 49 on debut to stretch the home side’s lead to 93 at the close.Smith has needed to be versatile in recent seasons, when he has alternated between his present middle-order slot and opening. He made his career-best 128 against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl last July as Horton’s partner at the top of the order but looks more suited to coming in lower down, although the experience he had gained against the new ball probably helped him summon the patience required to dig Lancashire out of their hole.Solid and organised, he would have been aware that he would need to be the steadying influence in the rebuilding work, first with Gareth Cross, older but less experienced, and then with Maharoof, who arrived in the middle announcing — in Smith’s words — that he was going to “smoke Mendis”.Just as well, then, that Smith had set his focus on being a slow burner, batting for four and a quarter hours without offering a whiff of a chance until Marcus Trescothick, who had used five bowlers in support of Kirby with only limited success, decided to try Arul Suppiah’s left-arm spin.Smith had reached 89, his best score since that century last July, and clearly felt a fourth first-class hundred could be his when he found himself stretching to reach for a ball from Suppiah and edged to Trescothick at slip. After Horton, much earlier, had edged Charl Willoughby to first slip, the morning belonged to Kirby, bowling with brimming intent and as impressive as Saj Mahmood had been on day one.The 33-year-old, who has been on the fringes of the England team without really coming close to selection, is with his fourth county, having started his professional career with Leicestershire. His biggest success, winning a Championship medal with Yorkshire, is a decade ago now but he has moved from Gloucestershire to Somerset over the winter in the belief that he might enjoy a reprise. He looked like a match-winner yesterday, striking first to have Moore edging to gully to be out for 73, his best Championship score for Lancashire. It was the first of three wickets in 10 balls, followed up when Karl Brown edged to point and Steven Croft was caught behind. Figures of 6-1-19-3 reflected an impressive opening spell.Early in the afternoon, he made Mark Chilton his fourth victim, snaffled by Trescothick at second slip, and gave a leap and a punch of delight when he broke the Smith-Cross partnership in similar fashion, having the latter caught, again by Trescothick at second slip, just after the wicketkeeper had completed a bright half-century.But there was an element of frustration behind the celebration, too, with Lancashire already back on top.

Mohsin Khan threatens to resign

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector, is on the verge of resigning from his post after differences developed with fellow selectors over the selection of the 15-man squad for the Tests against the West Indies

Osman Samiuddin03-May-2011

Mohsin Khan has issued an ultimatum to the PCB to resolve issues surrounding the Test squad by lunchtime Wednesday•AFP

Mohsin Khan, Pakistan’s chief selector, is on the verge of resigning from his post after differences developed with fellow selectors over the selection of the 15-man squad for the Tests against the West Indies.Khan, who was appointed ahead of the World T20 last year, has given an ultimatum to the PCB to resolve the matter by lunchtime Wednesday, otherwise he will announce his stepping down later in the afternoon. “I will make an important decision regarding my future tomorrow [Wednesday],” Khan told ESPNcricinfo. “There have been issues over the selection of this squad and they need to be resolved. I have told the board about it.”Though Khan refused to go into details, ESPNcricinfo understands there were differences over at least a couple of the selections, one of which is believed to be that of wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal who was surprisingly overlooked. Mohammad Salman, who has been impressive behind the stumps in the ongoing ODI series, is now set to make his Test debut in the two-match series that starts on May 12.But questions were asked over Akmal’s exclusion, especially given his impressive performances with the gloves in the four Tests he played since debuting against South Africa last year. It is not currently clear who signed off on Akmal’s exclusion ultimately. Only the chairman of the board has the authority to select or axe a player over and above the head selector, but the relationship between Ijaz Butt and Khan remains trouble-free.Both of Khan’s direct predecessors, Iqbal Qasim and Abdul Qadir, were scathing in their criticism of the non-selection of Akmal. “After his brilliant wicket-keeping in New Zealand where he took eight catches in a Test last year, Adnan deserved a place in the Test team. It is total injustice against a youngster,” Qasim said. “I don’t know what type of rebuilding they [selectors] talk about when they eliminated a deserving youngster.”Another former selection head, Salahuddin Ahmed, expressed concerns over the continued non-selection of Danish Kaneria, who has yet to be cleared by a board integrity committee following his entanglement – and eventual clearance from – a spot-fixing case in Essex last year. There is a distinct possibility that a few long-term differences of opinion with other members of the selection committee are also at play behind the decision; the committee has two other full-time members in Mohammad Ilyas and Azhar Khan, and two co-opted members in Farrukh Zaman and Asif Baloch. If Khan does ultimately step down, he will be the fifth chairman of selectors to do so under the tenure of Butt, following Salahuddin, Wasim Bari (who was an interim option), Qadir and Qasim.

Tremlett and Swann secure incredible victory

Graeme Swann and Chris Tremlett bowled England to an extraordinary innings-and-14-run victory as Sri Lanka collapsed in a barely believable 24.4 overs on the final day in Cardiff

Graeme Swann and Chris Tremlett bowled England to an extraordinary innings-and-14-run victory as Sri Lanka collapsed in a barely believable 24.4 overs on the final day in Cardiff. The pair shared eight wickets before Stuart Broad bounced out the last two batsmen to secure one of more remarkable wins in recent memory considering the amount of time lost to rain. Sri Lanka were shell-shocked and couldn’t handle the pressure, losing eight wickets in the final session. When Andrew Strauss declared two overs into the day, having given Ian Bell chance to reach his hundred – after play was delayed until 3pm by heavy morning rain – the summit of England’s ambitions appeared to be taking some psychological points to Lord’s on Friday. However, Tremlett removed both openers before tea to set the nerves jangling, and when Mahela Jayawardene became his third at the start of the final session, panic was beginning to set in the Sri Lankan ranks.Only when they were eight down did the visitors try to erase England’s advantage with any haste as Thisara Perera and Ajantha Mendis put bat to ball, but wickets were never far away against a pumped-up bowling attack. It didn’t matter that Strauss only had three frontline options, with James Anderson suffering a side strain. Tremlett preyed on the batsmen’s insecurities against the short ball, Swann found turn to force frazzled minds into playing loose shots, and then Broad hustled through the final resistance with 26 overs still to play. The merits of Strauss allowing Bell to reach three figures would have been hotly debated had England run out of time at the end, but his bowlers ensured he didn’t have to worry. The door was pushed ajar by Tremlett’s new-ball burst, elevated to the role vacated by Anderson and one he’ll be reluctant to relinquish. He struck with the last ball of his first over when Tharanga Paranavitana edged a low chance to first slip that was well held by the captain.Tillakaratne Dilshan is a player who could have quickly erased the deficit and eased the pressure, but he got into a tangle against a shorter delivery from Tremlett and the chance lobbed back to the bowler. Dilshan was given out straight away but he went to the DRS and replays confirmed a glove. Mahela and Kumar Sangakkara survived until tea with Sri Lanka 33 for 2, yet they gave a false sense of security.Although Tremlett changed ends after the interval, he maintained a probing length which left doubt in the batsman’s mind as to whether to play forward to back. Mahela opted to come onto the front foot and Tremlett’s extra carry ensured another edge carried comfortably to Strauss. England began to sense something could happen.Swann then gave another example of why he’s the world’s best spin bowler. Thilan Samaraweera was caught playing back to one that didn’t bounce and dragged onto the stump. Next, from round the wicket, a beautiful piece of bowling lured Sangakkara into an edge and Strauss snaffled his third edge – this time in the unaccustomed position of slip to the spinner. There was no stopping England or Swann as Farveez Maharoof edged his third ball and again the DRS was fruitless as HotSpot showed a clear edge. However, TV evidence was less clear when Prasanna Jayawardene, the first-innings hero with 112, was given out off a gloved pull. This time it was England who called for the review and although HotSpot wasn’t conclusive, Rod Tucker, the third umpire, went on the noise as he had with Sangakkara’s first-innings dismissal. The subsequent use of Snicko proved he was right again.Sri Lanka aided in their own demise, none more so than Rangana Herath who played a horrid sweep at Swann to be caught in front, leaving the visitors 52 for 8. Perera and Mendis quickly worked out the only chance was to get in front of England and the next two overs brought 20 yet, amazingly for a match were 139 overs were lost to rain, there was plenty of time left.Broad was disappointing in the first innings but when Tremlett was rested he responded with a fierce spell to the lower order. He roughed up Perera who lobbed a chance between three fielders before being brilliantly caught, low down, by Bell at short leg. Two balls later Suranga Lakmal fended another short delivery into the slips. England, four months on from Sydney, were back in victory mode. In contrast, Sri Lanka’s dressing room was full of blank faces and this will take some getting over.
