West Ham must sign Rodriguez

West Ham could finally unearth another talent like Dimitri Payet if a move for a former Premier League player materialises.

The news of recent reports linking West Ham to former Real Madrid man James Rodriguez will surely excite many Hammers fans as they aim to finally get a player who can dazzle like Payet once did.

Although the mercurial Frenchman was only at West Ham for 18 months, he was a fan favourite and gathered plenty of praise for his abilities, with former teammate Winston Reid describing him as a “special player” and you would be hard-pressed to find someone who would argue against that.

The truth is, the team hasn’t had a player like him since Payet departed in rather acrimonious circumstances and left a sour taste in the West Ham faithful.

GSB’s apparent pursuit of Rodriguez in that regard makes a lot of sense, especially when you consider the fact that he is still only 30 years of age and clearly still has too much talent to be fading away into anonymity.

The Colombian earns £200k-per-week at Al-Rayyan SC and even though journalist Pete O’Rourke labelled him a “luxury”, he also believes that Rodriguez wouldn’t be the right fit to “buy into Moyes ethos” and that’s a fair comment.

However, when you consider his stats when he was playing at Everton under Carlo Ancelotti, he scored six goals and notched nine assists in just 26 matches across all competitions.

On his day, the player can be one of the finest in Europe and with West Ham relying too much on goals from their wingers, with Said Benrahma (11) and Jarrod Bowen (16) making heavy contributions, then it’s fair to say Moyes needs someone to come in and take the burden off them.

With Rodriguez’s market value currently sitting at £13.5m, whoever gets the chance to secure his services will surely be getting a bargain.

AND in other news, Imagine him & Said: West Ham set to move for 22 y/o “hurricane”, he won’t cost a penny…

Bangladesh are devastated – Siddons

Jamie Siddons, the Bangladesh coach, has said that his team are devastated and shell-shocked after their loss to West Indies in Mirpur. Bangladesh were bowled out for 58, their lowest total in ODIs and the lowest by a Full Member in all World Cups, on a decent batting track. “Devastated. Everyone is still a little shell-shocked. Very embarrassed by the performance,” Siddons said of how the team took the defeat. “Disappointed for the public, but more importantly it’s a World Cup, and we need to play good cricket.”That defeat was followed by some unfortunate incidents in Mirpur: the team buses were pelted with stones by angry fans, and Siddons appealed to the public to realise the people most hurt by the performance were the players themselves. “The public have been very good the whole time, but they were disappointed after the last game. The public needs to realise, and I think they do realise, that the players were the most devastated, most embarrassed, and most upset by the result. They don’t go out there to play cricket like that. We are very keen to bounce back from that performance.”According to reports in local newspapers, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan’s parents’ house was stoned too. Siddons, however, said the people of Bangladesh were still behind his team. “Some people react. Things happen in every country in the world, after crazy performances like that. These people are very big supporters of the Bangladesh cricket team. I saw nothing different when we drove in today [Sunday], or yesterday [Saturday] from the airport; there was still unbelievable support for us. Everyone was disappointed by our performance, but everyone needs to realise these are the best 15 players in Bangladesh, and they are doing their best. If they have bad performances, that’s the way it is. We are trying, we are doing our best. We’ll play good cricket against England, .”It’s in everybody’s best interest – apart from the authorities – to forget what happened on Friday night. And that includes the Bangladesh cricket team. Siddons spoke of the need to not over-analyse that game. “Three or four dismissals were repetitions of mistakes I see in the nets every day, and those weaknesses were exposed in that game. The boys are working on them, they have been working on their faults for the last two or three years. They certainly came out under pressure, and played some shots that we know are our downfalls. The boys have promised me that there will be an improved performance in the next game. Not much more you can say about 58. You can’t over-analyse that.”Siddons agreed that similar mistakes were made in the game against Ireland, which they won thanks to a spirited show in the field to defend a meagre total. “We know what we are working on and what we have to do to play well. It just fell apart that one day. I don’t want to over-analyse because that will not get us anywhere. But we need to learn from it, and the players are aware of that. They need to change a few things and stick to our team plans, which they didn’t do so much in that match, and not even against Ireland. They went away from what has been successful for us for some reason.”Siddons said Bangladesh had batsmen in the XI who can stick around and build an innings, as opposed to the reckless show they put up in the two previous games. “Imrul [Kayes] and Imrose [Junaid Siddique] are the two players that are expected to play long innings. Mushfiqur [Rahim], batting at No. 4, is expected to do that as well. He has done it in domestic cricket; he has done it before at No. 6; and we have pushed him up to No. 4 to do that job. Imrose was playing a lot of shots, and I have spoken to him about that. That’s not his role in the team. As I said, these are the best 15 players for the job. There is no-one outside that can do a better job. So we stick with these players, and we make sure that they do better next time.”Siddons admitted that their performance has left them short on confidence. “The boys are still shell-shocked. They are sad by what happened and by the performance we put up. I am flat. My confidence is a bit dented as well. But we’ll move on. I don’t expect anybody else to forget it, but we need to forget it and move forward to the next game.”

Essa lesão quase me tirou do campo e me preocupou muito.

Man City: Guardiola ‘personally’ sets sights on £85m star

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has personally set his sights on an £85 million star who’s now open to joining the Premier League champions, according to reports.

The Lowdown: City eye new midfield man…

After completing a deal to sign Borussia Dortmund sensation Erling Haaland, City are now eyeing an heir to club legend and long-serving veteran Fernandinho who’s set to leave this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/man-city-latest-developments-3/” title=”Man City latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Sky Blues will miss the Brazilian who has been pivotal both on and off the field since his arrival from Shakhtar Donestk in 2013.

City officials are now tasked with bringing in his perfect replacement and the player in question will have absolutely huge shoes to fill.

The likes of Paul Pogba of Man United have even been linked as Guardiola and sporting director Txiki Begiristain seemingly leave no stone unturned in their search.

Another big name in Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong is reportedly on the agenda with Sport recently claiming his club will demand €100 million (£85m) to sell.

The Latest: Pep ‘personally’ sets his sights…

Now, according to reports out of Spain, Guardiola has ‘personally’ set his sights on the Dutchman and ‘wants’ him for the 2022/2023 season.

As well as this, it is believed that de Jong ‘would not look down’ on City’s boss and is now open to joining.

The Verdict: Make the move…

If Begiristain and co can whittle down the rumoured £85m price, de Jong would undoubtedly be a great signing.

Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ by former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell, the 25-year-old has been a mainstay under Barca boss Xavi this season and one of the first names on the team sheet with only a handful of other players featuring over more La Liga minutes (WhoScored).

In that time, de Jong has won the joint-most Man of the Match awards for Barca alongside Memphis Depay – standing out as a major figurehead for the Catalans (WhoScored).

Guardiola’s personal interest tells you all need to know and we believe the Netherlands international ace would be quite the capture.

ICC to donate US $1 million to NZC

The ICC will donate US $1 million to New Zealand Cricket (NZC) to help in the building of its new office after its original premises in Christchurch were destroyed in the February 22 earthquake. The earthquake, which had a magnitude of 6.3, left more than 65 people dead and caused widespread damage in Christchurch.NZC Chief Executive Justin Vaughan, who said that he was yet to be informed of the exact details of the donation, was grateful to the ICC for its magnanimous gesture. “It is very generous on behalf of the ICC,” Vaughan said. “I know they were very concerned and saddened by the events in Christchurch at the end of February. You’re sort of blown away, really, it is such a wonderful, generous offer.”NZC is currently operating out of temporary offices in Lincoln, where its high performance center is also located, and Vaughan said that plans were afoot to work out a permanent base in Lincoln.”It is the first place to look – we have our high performance base out here, we now have our headquarters out here so that is definitely our default option.”Vaughan said that he would soon meet with New Zealand coach John Wright to review the team’s World Cup performance, where they made the semi-finals, and look at the possibility of retaining bowling coach Allan Donald and assistant coach Trent Woodhill as well as find a replacement for manager Dave Currie.

Pakistan offspinner Saeed Ajmal has said that he is still not sure how the Decision Review System (DRS) overturned on-field umpire Ian Gould’s lbw ruling against Sachin Tendulkar during the World Cup semi-final against India in Mohali. Gould ruled Tendulkar lbw off Ajmal in the 11th over, but the batsman reviewed the decision. Replays showed that the ball pitched in line but according to Hawk Eye the ball was missing leg stump and the decision was overturned.”I don’t know how the television replays showed my delivery turning towards the leg side because I had bowled an arm ball and it went straight,” Ajmal told on the team’s arrival in Lahore. “I was 110% confident when the referral was made that the batsman was out.” Tendulkar was on 23 at that point, and survived four dropped chances before he was dismissed after making a crucial 85 that earned him the Man of the Match award.Ajmal picked up two wickets and said that he was happy with his bowling performance but disappointed that Pakistan lost the high-voltage clash to India by 29 runs. “All of us were very disappointed at losing the match because there was so much interest and hype attached to it. But in cricket one team has to lose and one has to win,” he said. The pick of the Pakistan bowlers in that game was left-arm seamer Wahab Riaz who picked up his first five-wicket haul in ODIs and had India in trouble at 205 for 6 before Suresh Raina’s cameo. “The wickets of [Virender] Sehwag and Yuvraj [Singh] were most memorable for me as they are very dangerous players of pace and spin,” Riaz said. Riaz had Sehwag lbw for 38 and accounted for Yuvraj Singh for a duck with a swinging, dipping full toss.Pakistan were warmly welcomed by their fans when they arrived in Lahore and captain Shahid Afridi, who landed in Karachi, was mobbed by joyous fans on the way to his house. Opening batsman Mohammad Hafeez, who made a quick-fire 43, urged the Pakistan fans to have faith in the team. “This team has a lot of capability and will get better results in the future,” he said.Pakistan manager Intikhab Alam praised the team spirit and said the way the team had gelled together and played as a unit through the tournament was the most satisfying aspect of the campaign. “My main task was to unite the team and make it perform collectively and I think we achieved that to a great extent and that is satisfying for me.”Pakistan next travel to West Indies to play Twenty20, five one-dayers and two Tests. That tour begins on April 18.

Gibson praises Bishoo's composure

West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has praised the composure shown by legspinner Devendra Bishoo, who picked up four wickets on Test debut

ESPNcricinfo staff14-May-2011West Indies coach Ottis Gibson has praised the composure shown by legspinner Devendra Bishoo, who picked up four wickets on Test debut, as Pakistan were bowled out for 160 in their first innings in Guyana.”Judging from his debut in World Cup a few months back he has showed signs of being a very intelligent bowler,” Ottis said. “He showed he has the ability to handle himself when he’s put under pressure and that’s a very good sign.”He only had 226 to bowl at but he didn’t show any nerves. He has been very adaptable and handled the situation very well. Today, Umar Akmal came at him quite hard and he responded very well. He varied his pace and demonstrated he knows exactly what he’s doing.”Bishoo, who was the highest wicket-taker for his side with figures of 4 for 60, said his focus had been on getting the ball “in the right areas”. “I tried to stick to what I normally do,” Bishoo said. “I came here today and I knew once I got the ball in the right areas I would get some wickets.”When I came on to bowl I didn’t look too far ahead. I concentrated on what I wanted to do with each ball and how I would attack each batsman. I got a lot of support from the guys on the field and everyone in the dressing room. It was also good the crowd was behind me.”Bishoo, who was the highest wicket-taker for West Indies in the ODI series, said the wicket of opposition captain Misban-ul-Haq, who became his first Test victim, lbw for 2, set the tone for him for the rest of the innings.”My first wicket was a relief,” Bishoo said. “I knew I got him ‘dead’ in front. He’s the main batsman so to get him so early on was a great feeling. The team needed me to come in and do the job at that stage and I was happy I delivered.” Bishoo’s other three victims were Asad Shafiq, Akmal and Mohammad Salman. The hosts ended the second day on 34 for 2, giving them an overall lead of 100 runs.

UAE book spot in final with crushing win

UAE extended their unbeaten run to four matches in the World Cricket League Division 2, completing an impressive eight-wicket win chasing just 87 against Uganda at the ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai. The win ensures UAE a place in the tournament’s final on April 15.Choosing to bat, Uganda were not able to get any partnerships going; the best in the innings was a paltry 15 runs. Left-arm spinner Shadeep Silva struck early – as he has done through the tournament – removing opener Akbar Baig to trigger Uganda’s collapse. The spinners continued to trouble the Uganda batsmen, with offspinner Mohammad Tauqir picking up two wickets in a five-over spell, and the side’s second left-arm spinner, Ahmed Raza, running through the middle order with figures of 4 for 17 in 7.1 overs.UAE were steady in their chase, knocking off the runs in just 17.2 overs. Opener Amjad Ali anchored the innings, finishing with 40 not out. Raza was Man of the Match for his four wickets, and said the fact the wicket had been played on a lot helped him. “This is the fourth time this wickets been played on and today it definitely helped me as a spinner,” he said. “It’s a good wicket and I felt I needed to prove myself today after a comparatively poor performance yesterday against Hong Kong.”I don’t think the conditions really helped Uganda, and we felt coming into this game that we had the upper hand as we beat them in the warm-up fixture we played before the event started. We’d really like to face Namibia in the final and beat them; it would be a great way to end the tournament.”

Raza is likely to get his wish as Namibia moved on to six points, after they got the tournaments’ highest total and beat Bermuda by 86 runs at the other ground of the Global Academy. With their impressive net run-rate, Nambia are out of reach of the other sides. Against Bermuda, they racked up 297 after electing to bat, with Ewald Steenkamp, Sarel Burger and Craig Williams all getting half-centuries. Steenkamp got 87 at the top of the order, and along with Burger, who got 59, gave the team a steady start. But the two had taken their time getting their runs and it needed Williams to play a whirlwind innings of 74 from 35 balls to get Namibia to a big total. Williams’ knock ensured Nambia scored at 10 runs an over in their last 14 overs. He hit seven sixes in his innings and knocked the wind out of Bermuda. The target always looked too stiff for Bermuda, and the loss of three early wickets didn’t help. Dion Stovell tried keeping them abreast of the required-rate with his 73 off 67 balls, and Lionel Cann got 53, but Bermuda were bowled out in 42.3 overs for 211. Left-arm spinner Louis van der Westhuizen was the most successful of Namibia’s bowlers, taking 4 for 14.The loss means Bermuda have no chance of making the final, but they can still stay in the division by staying in the top four. Their coach David Moore was impressed with the attitude of the batsmen but felt they needed to last longer. “In terms of batting we set off like a house on fire with Stovell and Cann, but those boys should really be getting centuries,” he said. “Our bowling was disappointing, it began very well but we just lost it.”Papa New Guinea’s seamers Hitolo Areni and Rarva Dikana took seven wickets between them to help their side successfully defend 217 against Hong Kong at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. PNG picked up wickets at regular intervals, and only five of Hong Kong’s batsmen got into double figures. Nizakat Khan got 55, and Najeeb Amar and Hussain Butt got thirties, but the rest of Hong Kong’s batting crumbled and they fell 43 runs short. PNG’s total was built on the back of Christopher Kent’s 59 and Mahuru Dai’s 43.
