West Brom: Palmer fumes over Johnstone saga

Carlton Palmer has slammed the West Brom board for allowing Sam Johnstone to leave the club as a free agent.

The lowdown: Johnstone attracting interest

A report from the Daily Mail has claimed that the 29-year-old goalkeeper is a target for Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham and Southampton this summer.

Set to become a free agent in July (Transfermarkt), Johnstone seems certain to end a four-year permanent spell at The Hawthorns at the end of the current campaign. Indeed, Steve Bruce has acknowledged that the ‘keeper will be on his way out of Albion once the season ends.

The anti-climactic ending to Johnstone’s West Brom career has been criticised by one former England international…

The latest: Palmer criticises West Brom

Speaking to GiveMeSport, Palmer – who works as a pundit for the BBC – has slammed the club’s decision to allow the England ace to leave for nothing.

He fumed: “They’re going to lose Sam Johnstone on a free, which is crazy business. Why not let Sam Johnstone go last season if you’re not going to get him to sign a new contract? Why not let him go and get £10m-£12m for him rather than let him go on a free, it’s just crazy.”

The verdict: Bang on the money

Whilst keeping the three-cap England goalkeeper was perceived as a positive having suffered relegation last year, without the prospect of an instant return to the top flight it now appears to be a major oversight from the West Brom hierarchy.

Last summer, West Ham saw a reported £10m bid for the stopper rejected by the Midlands club, money which would now go a long way towards funding a much-needed squad overhaul.

Moreover, Bruce may need to replace Johnstone as first-choice at The Hawthorns, with neither David Button nor Alex Palmer seemingly up to the task based on the concession of 20 goals in their 10 combined Albion appearances so far this season.

Tuskers solidify their top spot with win

Matabeleland Tuskers ran to their third consecutive win in the MetBank Pro40 Championship, Terry Duffin’s 88 guiding them to a four-wicket victory over Mashonaland Eagles at the Country Club ground in Harare. After being put in by Tuskers captain Gavin Ewing, Eagles struggled against seam and spin alike and were bowled out for 196 in the 36th over. Though he fell before the job was quite done, Duffin’s knock set up the win with 25 balls to spare.Mashonaland Eagles are traditionally one of the strongest domestic sides, while Tuskers endured a nightmare season in 2009-10, battling Southern Rocks for the bottom spot. But the roles have been reversed this time around, and this result solidifies Tuskers’ position at the top while Eagles remain winless from four games. After Tuskers’ seamers dealt with the top order, Keegan Meth, Chris Mpofu and Tawanda Mupariwa picking up six wickets between them, the spinners ensured there would be no fightback from the Eagles. Forster Mutizwa blazed to a 25-ball 39 and stand-in captain Ryan Butterworth battled hard for his 45 – his best effort in List A games – but Eagles couldn’t put together any significant partnerships and offspinner John Nyumbu closed the innings by removing Tinotenda Mutombodzi for his second wicket.Duffin, not known for his quick scoring in limited-overs games, seemed to find the boundary with ease and managed 11 fours and a six before falling to Greg Lamb, who was the pick of the Eagles bowlers with three wickets. The 72 runs Duffin put on for the fourth wicket with Charles Coventry swung the game firmly Tuskers’ way, and though both fell before the job was done Keith Dabengwa was on hand to guide the team home.On a batsman’s track at Kwekwe Sports Club, four of the Mountaineers’ top order passed fifty as they reached a massive 301 for 7. Tino Mawoyo continued the good form he showed against New Zealand A with 50, while Jonathan Beukes shrugged off his failures in the opening round of the Logan Cup with a boundary-laden 67. Greg Smith and Timycen Maruma then combined to put on 60 at better than 10-an-over, and despite a lower-order wobble Mountaineers set a daunting target. With stormclouds approaching, Brendan Taylor launched Mid West Rhinos’ chase with a brutal half-century, lacing 12 fours and a six and putting on 90 for the first wicket with Gary Ballance. But after he was dismissed, caught by Hamilton Masakadza off the bowling of Tinashe Panyangara, the innings lost momentum and when the weather intervened Rhinos were 43 runs short on the Duckworth/Lewis method.

IPL asks franchises not to approach domestic players

The BCCI has sent a notice to all 10 IPL franchises instructing them to refrain from approaching uncapped India domestic players until notified to do so

Nagraj Gollapudi21-Dec-2010The BCCI has sent a notice to all 10 IPL franchises instructing them to refrain from approaching uncapped India domestic players ahead of the 2011 tournament until notified to do so by the board. “The circular states the franchises can only sign players once the IPL lets them know the timing,” a franchise official told ESPNcricinfo.Under league rules, the domestic players have been broken down in to three categories, depending on how much first-class cricket they have played. The lowest tier of players can sign for Rs 10 lakhs (US$21,500) per year, the middle tier for Rs 20 lakhs ($43,000) and the top tier – those who have played at least five seasons of Ranji Trophy – will be paid Rs 30 lakhs ($64,500) per year. According to the official, a shortage of good domestic players is the reason why franchises are reportedly pursuing deals already. However, not everybody is happy. Another franchise official said that the IPL’s closed-door method is only hurting them. “How can the IPL do this and not announce the date when we can start signing the talent? Otherwise we might lose on fetching a good buy.”

The IPL has asked the franchises to submit a list of players they would be interested in the auction by December 24. This will help them strike out the names nobody wants, helping smoothen the two-day auction process

The domestic players that are not signed by the franchises after the BCCI gives the go-ahead will remain unsold, and will not be a part of the auction

IPL 4 has been dogged by controversy since the then chairman Lalit Modi was suspended by the BCCI in April. Modi was later removed from the administration of the league altogether, while two teams with alleged links to him- Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab – were terminated by the board. Both teams have since been reinstated by the courts and will take part in the player auction in January. There seems to be another viable reason why the IPL is being strict on the signings of uncapped domestic players. “The BCCI is wary. What if both Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals sign uncapped players, and then falter on the guarantee money the Bombay High Court asked them to raise by January 3 as a condition for restoring their status after they were terminated?,” an IPL official told ESPNcricinfo.

West Ham reach player contract agreement

West Ham United insider and reliable source ExWHUemployee has shared a fresh update for supporters as the club agree a new contract in principle.

The Lowdown: Hammers eye in-house deals…

Reports have backed that the Irons and manager David Moyes are eyeing plenty of in-house new deals for some of their best players.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, before taking to the transfer market, West Ham apparently wish to secure the futures surrounding some of Moyes’ star assets – including the likes of winger Jarrod Bowen and midfielder Tomas Soucek ‘in line for big improvements’ (Claret & Hugh).

Meanwhile, shot stopper and mainstay number one Lukasz Fabianski has previously confirmed talks with the Irons over extending his deal which is set to expire in late June as things stand.

While nothing has been announced on those fresh terms yet, ExWHUemployee has now shared a fresh update on Fabianski’s situation.

The Latest: Agreement reached, but not signed…

According to the insider, via West Ham Way, a deal with the 37-year-old over fresh terms is ‘agreed’ but hasn’t yet been signed.

The goalkeeper, ‘as of now’, has given the green-light to extend his stay but no ink has been put to paper – with Ex claiming ‘question marks’ over Moyes’ options could prompt the club to turn to Burnley star Nick Pope.

The Verdict: Get it signed…

While it is currently uncertain what is delaying the actual signature from Fabianski, we believe securing the former Poland international should be a major priority before this summer.

A Moyes ‘untouchable’, the Premier League veteran has played nearly every top flight game for West Ham and more minutes in the division than any other Irons player (WhoScored).

Before contemplating whether to activate Alphonse Areola’s permanent deal clause or to take to the summer market, securing Fabianski to fresh terms for one more year is simply imperative.

Celtic: Cameron Carter-Vickers was outstanding

Celtic enjoyed a comfortable afternoon in the Premiership as they strolled to a routine 2-0 win on Sunday to send them six points clear at the top of the table.

Kyogo Furuhashsi opened the scoring in the first half and then Jota, who set up the first goal, sealed the three points with an 87th-minute strike.

The Hoops dominated the match as they ended the game with 74% of the ball and 22 efforts on goal, with Ross County fortunate that they only conceded twice.

Whilst Jota scored and assisted a goal in the match, the real star of the show for Ange Postecoglou was central defender Cameron Carter-Vickers.

It is easy to point at the attackers and praise them for scoring the goals to win the match but all of their work is built on the back of a strong platform. The solid defence allows the likes of Jota and Kyogo to go and do what they want to do without worrying about constantly needing to drop deep to win the ball back – allowing the opposition to press up on them.

Carter-Vickers was outstanding in central defence as he stood strong at the back and was reliable in possession. He played a major role in Celtic’s dominance throughout the game and the forwards should be thanking him for making their lives easier.

As per SofaScore, he won 85.7% (6/7) of his individual duels and made five clearances, one interception and one block to help his side to a clean sheet. This shows that he was superb defensively as he won the vast majority of his battles with Ross County players and did not allow himself to be beaten by the opposition – keeping them away from Joe Hart’s goal.

On the ball, he completed 85% of his passes from 62 touches and created one chance from centre-back. He is not expected to do anything special in possession from his position but Postecoglou will be delighted with his assuredness on the ball.

The £20k-per-week defender continues to impress at the heart of the defence and fans will surely be wanting to see him back at Parkhead next season on a permanent basis.

In the Premiership this season, the on-loan Tottenham man has averaged a sublime SofaScore rating of 7.36 across 29 matches. Celtic have kept 16 clean sheets in those games and the latest one came with the help of his sublime display against Ross County on Sunday.

Celtic may rue Ryan Christie sale

Mutter the name Ryan Christie in the presence of a Celtic supporter and it may just send shivers down their spine or provoke a look of despair in your general direction.

On his day, the former Bhoy had the potential to frighten defences to death, cutting inside with the finesse of Arjen Robben and devastatingly finding the net. Yet, on other days, the ex-Parkhead gem resembled a frustrated figure, somebody who to coin an old phrase, couldn’t hit a barn door.

That was the story of Christie’s Celtic career in a nutshell; promise, excitement but ultimately, he’d let you down and disappoint too regularly. The very fact he was branded a “laughing stock” by pundit Frank McAvennie paints a very vivid picture of his final campaign with Celtic.

After all, at one stage last term, he scored just once in a run of 19 league outings.

Yet, as the Premiership title race begins to captivate and enthral with Ange Postecoglou’s side stuttering in attack, they could well do with his presence.

Liel Abada has been exceptional at times this term, scoring 14 goals and assisting 11 since penning terms with the Scottish giants. Sadly, however, he has failed to find the net in his last four outings.

Daizen Maeda has also struggled and with the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi, Karamoko Dembele and Giorgos Giakoumakis regularly spending time on the sideline through injury, they have been bereft of much offensive depth.

Additionally, James Forrest’s career looks to be winding down now but in Christie, they had the perfect man to cover in a multitude of positions across the forward line and his presence would surely be appreciated right now.

He wasn’t always a prolific goalscorer but in terms of his creativity, he was a marvel, supplying 15 goals in his final campaign in Scotland.

Capped 26 times by his country, he also offers experience, something that would be invaluable to a young and developing Celtic team.

To call letting him go a mistake may be pushing it, but there must be an element of regret in allowing him to run down to the final six months of his contract.

As a result, the Bhoys fetched just £2.5m for a player whose value has quickly increased by a whopping 224% to £8.1m after waving farewell to Postecoglou and co.

Celtic have fetched plenty of big fees in recent years; namely for the likes of Odsonne Edouard and Kieran Tierney, but they should have received far more for Christie as well.

India level series with 87-run win

India emphasised that they are poor travellers no more by pulling off a series-levelling win in Durban, where they had suffered one of their worst Test defeats in 1996

The Bulletin by Siddarth Ravindran29-Dec-2010
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Jacques Kallis failed to survive a vicious bouncer from Sreesanth•Getty ImagesIndia reiterated that they are no longer poor travellers by pulling off a series-levelling win in Durban, the scene of one of their worst Test defeats in 1996. Monday’s victory at Kingsmead, after a humiliating loss in Centurion, joined other famous successes over the past decade on some of the world’s fastest tracks – Headingley, Jamaica, Nottingham, Johannesburg and Perth. The match was even at the start of the fourth day but India’s bowlers barely sent down a bad ball in the morning session to seize control of the Test. A Sreesanth snorter to Jacques Kallis started South Africa’s slide, before two lbws – one a marginal decision and the other a howler, both sure to refuel the UDRS debate – hurt them further. Ashwell Prince tried to resist but India plugged away to remove the tail an hour into the second session and set up a decider in Cape Town next week. The ebb and flow of the match was matched by Sreesanth’s bowling form. The wayward, antic-loving Sreesanth was missing in the morning as he sent down an accurate spell of sustained hostility. The highlight was in the day’s seventh over – an unplayable bouncer that reared up sharply and jagged in towards Kallis, who had no way of avoiding it. He jumped and arched his back in an attempt to get out of the way but could only glove it to gully. It was the snorter needed to remove the kingpin of South Africa’s batting. There was no over-the-top Sreesanth celebration either, just a fist pump before getting back to business. That wicket put India slightly ahead, and there was no doubt who the front-runners were when AB de Villiers offered a half-hearted forward defensive against a Harbhajan Singh delivery from round the wicket. He was struck in front of middle, looked lbw and the umpire agreed, though Hawk-Eye suggested the ball would have bounced well over the stumps.Mark Boucher has, over a decade in international cricket, built his reputation as a scrapper and, with Prince also around, it wasn’t yet lights out for South Africa. Boucher, though, made only 1 before he was given lbw to a delivery that was angling across him and comfortably missing off stump .South Africa had lost three wickets, and there was still no boundary in the morning, a testament to the scarcity of bad deliveries. When the first four did come, from Dale Steyn, it was an edge to third man. Steyn had pinged Zaheer Khan on the helmet with a quick bouncer on Tuesday, and was the target of a string of short balls. After three of those, Zaheer slipped in a fuller delivery, which Steyn duly nicked to slip.At 155 for 7, with lunch 45 minutes away, the game looked set for a quick finish. Prince and Paul Harris, however, resisted with some dour batting and a couple of confident boundaries from Prince. They saw out the 10 overs to the break but a pumped-up Zaheer, chatting with the batsmen after almost every ball, ended the stand in his first over after the resumption with a peach that clipped Harris’ off stump.Prince and Morne Morkel then stood firm for an hour, reducing the required runs to double digits. India’s wait seemed to have ended when Ishant Sharma had Morkel wafting to gully, but that turned out to be his regulation wicket off a no-ball. In his next over, though, Ishant didn’t overstep when he found the edge off Morkel to Dhoni. Two balls later, an alert Cheteshwar Pujara threw down the stumps from short leg, catching the No. 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe short, and sparking celebrations. The Indians were ready to grab the stumps as souvenirs, when they realised the third umpire had been called for. The dismissal was confirmed moments later and there was no stopping the celebrations this time.India came into this Test with their No. 1 status questioned after the clobbering in Centurion and doubts over whether they had the bowling to take 20 wickets. They provided answers to both in Durban, handing South Africa their third straight defeat at the venue.

Unexpected reversals leave IPL preparations in disarray

One of the BCCI’s more serious challenges, ahead of its special general body meeting on Saturday, is the stuttering preparation for IPL 2011

Tariq Engineer06-Dec-2010

The longer the cases drag on, the harder it becomes for the board to plan for the 2011 tournament•AFP

The BCCI has convened a special general body meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on Saturday to discuss the reappointment of the board’s disciplinary committee. The tenure of the committee, which is investigating the conduct of former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, expired at September’s annual general body meeting. The board, however, failed to reappoint or reconstitute it, technically stripping it of its existence. The BCCI secretary N Srinivasan told PTI news agency that the reappointment of the committee was “a minor thing” which had been pointed out by Modi’s lawyer, Mehmood Abdi last month. The SGM, ostensibly to tackle a “minor” issue, will be held in the backdrop of several major, unexpected reversals for a board that is usually used to getting its own way. One of the BCCI’s more serious challenges is the stuttering preparation for IPL 2011.The past six months have been dogged by the controversial termination of two franchises (Rajasthan Royals and the Kings XI Punjab), and a protracted ownership-pattern dispute over a third, (the new Kochi franchise). As a result of the controversies, the player auction has been delayed by several months and going by the BCCI’s legal battles, could well be held in the middle of the 2011 World Cup.The confusion over the eventual number of teams that will be involved next season affects every component of the world’s most lucrative domestic league: its teams/ franchises, its players and its very structure. IPL 2011 now faces several scenarios: If both expelled teams take part in the player auction, it will become much harder to prevent them at a later date from playing in the IPL, as any players who sign with them would then be left without a team. The league is currently slated to have eight teams playing each other home and away, just like in the first three seasons. A ninth team would naturally result in an unbalanced schedule, while 10 teams could increase the overall number of fixtures and once again rake up the issue of player burnout. The board is considering delaying the player auction until March, by which time its legal issues are expected to be resolved, and it will know how many teams will be playing. That would, however, result in the player auction clashing with the World Cup and will prevent teams from being able to use their players in promotions and advertising campaigns, potentially causing them to breach their obligations to their sponsors.
Rajasthan are already back in the league less than two months after being ‘terminated’ due to an interim stay order from Justice Srikrishna, the arbitor in the case. While the board has appealed against Srikrishna’s ruling to the Bombay High Court, legal opinion suggests it will be difficult to overturn his order. There is also believed to be a sentiment within the IPL governing council that the cases of Rajasthan and Punjab are “reasonably strong”, and that the BCCI’s leadership is going after too many people at the same time.Srikrishna has restored Rajasthan’s rights under the franchise agreement, including the right to take part in the player auction. Srikrishna also stated that the BCCI could not make any rules that would adversely affect Rajasthan, for example changing any of the league’s rules, hampering the board’s ability to alter its plans as the legal cases unfold. Srikrishna may have stepped down from the Punjab hearing, but it is believed that the stay in favour of Rajasthan could have a bearing on their case when it comes up for hearing.Punjab accused the board of “deliberately” delaying its proceedings so that the December 6 deadline for the retention of select players in each team would expire, leaving Punjab looking in from the outside. The Bombay High Court ruled in Punjab’s favour, and extended the deadline to December 8, handing the BCCI yet another setback, and suggesting Punjab has a case against the board. The longer the cases drag on, the harder it becomes for the board, and the franchises, to plan for the 2011 tournament.
