Ghumman blitzes Hyderabad to victory

Azeem Ghumman starred in Hyderabad Hawks’ win•AFP

Azeem Ghumman’s quickfire 59 set the Hyderabad Hawks on their way to a seven-wicket victory over Lahore Eagles at the Gaddafi Stadium. Chasing a stiff 178, Ghumman, who captained Pakistan Under-19s at the World Cup earlier this year, blasted nine fours and two sixes and added 91 in seven overs for the first wicket with Sharjeel Khan.Hyderabad briefly lost their way after the opening stand, losing three wickets cheaply and had Faisal Athar retired hurt. Thirties from Rizwan Ahmed and Aqeel Anjum, however, safely carried them to their first win of the tournament, with two balls to spare.Lahore seemed to have the upper hand after their captain Taufeeq Umar, who last played for Pakistan in 2006, played through the innings for a 78. No one else from the top seven provided him much support, but No. 8 Junaid Zia smashed four sixes and two fours to raise 47 from the final 14 deliveries. In the day’s second match, Rawalpindi Rams beat Karachi Zebras by 28 runs. The defeat knocked Karachi out of the tournament and left Rawalpindi facing a knock-out clash with Sialkot Stallions to determine who will progress from Group B.Rawalpindi were struggling at 30 for 3 when 36-year-old Naved Ashraf, in his 19th season of first-class cricket, provided them the momentum with a quick 45 which included four sixes and two fours. There were no other big contributions but a string of twenties pushed Rawalpindi to a challenging 172.Four boundaries from Khurram Manzoor in the first two overs gave Zebras’ chase a brisk start, but he fell to left-arm fast bowler Sohail Tanvir for 19. No. 3 Babar Rehman perished in the third over, and following a burst of hitting from Hasan Raza -now 28 years old but famous for being the youngest Test debutant – there was another slew of wickets which left them at a hopeless 73 for 5, a position from which there was no comeback.Lahore Lions eased to a 36-run win over Peshawar Panthers at the Gaddafi Stadium after their openers, Nasir Jamshed and Ahmed Shehzad, had propelled them to a challenging total. Asked to bat, the Lahore openers gave their team a solid foundation in a 113-run stand in just 11.2 overs. Jamshed smashed eight fours and two sixes in his 79 while Shehzad’s innings was laced with six fours and one six. That wasn’t all. Umar Akmal came in and played a typically aggressive knock, carting eight fours in his 52. Thanks to his onslaught, Lahore reached 206 and it proved adequate.Peshawar, in their reply, failed to emulate the start provided by the Lahore openers, with the first wicket falling on 16. The Lahore bowlers struck at regular intervals and while there were contributions that promised much, the highest, unfortunately for Peshawar, was 35 from Zohaib Khan at No.8. Wahab Riaz shone with the ball for Lahore, taking 3 for 15 as Peshawar folded for 170. Points Table

Aston Villa: Mings’ position in jeopardy

Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings is ‘at risk’ of losing his place in the team, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The lowdown

Mings, a Villa mainstay, has started 29 of their 31 Premier League matches so far this season, with only injury or suspension keeping him out of the line-up.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-developments/” title=”Aston Villa latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Villa paid just over £20million to sign him from Bournemouth in the summer of 2019, and he signed a contract extension in September 2020. His £80,000-per-week deal runs until the end of the 2023/24 season.

Mings has faced criticism in recent times, with journalist Zach Lowy insisting in February that he was ‘far too error-prone to be a starter, let alone captain’ and urging Villa ‘to move on from him and upgrade with a new CB this summer’.

Steven Gerrard has said he will pick his ‘long-term’ skipper in the summer and admitted that he could recruit someone from elsewhere to don the armband.

The latest

Jones, speaking to GMS, says Gerrard will be considering Mings’ ‘position in the side’ in light of a succession of errors in recent seasons.

He explained:

“I think his position in the side has to be at risk at this stage,” he said. “He has also made quite a few errors over the past couple of years.”

The verdict

Since Villa were promoted to the Premier League, Mings has made five errors directly leading to an opposition shot and four leading to a goal and given away two penalty kicks (via SofaScore).

And those figures don’t account for more subjective errors.

It seems that Gerrard is determined to strengthen at the heart of his defence, with Football Insider claiming he plans to approach his old club Liverpool over a deal for Joe Gomez.

Gomez, valued at £19.8million by Transfermarkt, is described as his no. 1 target.

His public comments about the captaincy might have been a veiled challenge to Mings, who could be fighting for his spot in these final weeks of the campaign. If he can respond, then perhaps it will be enough to avoid the axe.

In other news, Villa could make this move after Sean Dyche’s sacking.

Wolves plotting Hirving Lozano bid

Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in signing Napoli’s Mexican winger Hirving Lozano in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to reports from Italian outlet Napoli Today (via Sport Witness) who claim that Bruno Lage’s side have been “following” the Napoli winger “for some time.”

26-year-old Lozano is about to enter the final two years of his contract at Napoli as reported by Sport Witness, the Serie A outfit would like to extend his stay in Naples.

Though if they are not able to find an agreement, they could “decide to separate from the player.”

An upgrade in attack

It is no secret that Wolves have struggled to find the back of the net in Bruno Lage’s first season at the Molineux. The Old Gold are the fourth-lowest scorers in the league this season ahead of just Brighton, Watford, Burnley and Norwich.

Though, their most worrying attacking stat is through the Premier League xG (expected goals) table, in which Wolves rank second bottom with just 36.5xG, having scored a total of 33 goals in total.

This shows that Wolves are failing to create chances, which can again be referenced by their 17th place position in the big chances created table.

They need some reinforcements in attack, particularly with Daniel Podence’s lack of goal returns in a season that has been almost a direct copy of the last, with just three assists in the league this season.

£25m-rated Lozano – who has been described as “entertaining” by football analyst Statman Dave – could offer Bruno Lage a more significant amount of goal returns with his 0.54 goal-creating actions per game dwarfing Podence’s total of 0.23 GCA.

This season Lozano has an impressive 50% of Napoli’s games this campaign due to a shoulder injury that ruled him out for a month.

Though, he proved his prowess in front of goal last season with a tally of 11 goals from the wing.

Podence has never been close to those numbers throughout the entirety of his career, leaving Lage no option but to look for a goalscoring winger.

Crystal Palace must recall Eze v Newcastle

Crystal Palace will no doubt be looking to return to winning ways, after sustaining losses to Chelsea and Leicester City, respectively.

Both losses saw the Eagles deploy two different formations, as they temporarily stepped away from their 4-3-3 system.

When they played Leicester City in their most recent league game, Palace attempted to gain a numerical advantage throughout the centre of the pitch by deploying a 4-2-3-1 system against Brendan Rodgers’ 4-3-3 shape.

And in the FA Cup semi-final, Vieira looked to nullify Chelsea’s attacking threat by the means of a 3-5-2 system.

Across both fixtures, Vieira’s side conceded four goals and scored just one. That is a sure-fire sign for the return of the system that had seen them pick up 11 points from a possible 15, across their last five games.

On the chalkboard

One player who has drastically struggled for minutes this season is the 23-year-old talent, Ebere Eze, someone dubbed “special” by the Coaches Voice.

Eze has made just seven appearances in the Premier League this season, after struggling for fitness as a result of an achilles tendon problem that he sustained at the end of the last Premier League campaign.

Sunday’s FA Cup tie against Chelsea saw him play a full 90 minutes for the first time this season, with Eze now reported to be fully fit by Crystal Palace correspondent, Mark Wyatt, and ready to make his claim as an Eagles regular.

The game against Eddie Howe’s Newcastle side is the perfect opportunity for the England starlet to make his presence known and get back to the form that saw him chip in with ten goal contributions in 34 Premier League appearances for Palace last season.

Vieira can give the £37k-per-week livewire creative freedom up top, with a simple tweak to his usual 4-3-3 formation.

Quite simply, a switch to a 4-3-2-1 system (replacing the two wing positions with two attacking midfielders) would suit Eze’s game down to a tee.

The £18m-rated star played his best football as an attacking midfielder for QPR in a 2019/20 season that saw him bag eight assists.

This slight tweak could help him reach these numbers once again in a move that could, quite simply, terrify Eddie Howe and Newcastle United.

Gyrano Kerk makes Leeds transfer claim

Lokomotiv Moscow winger Gyrano Kerk has claimed that he could have potentially joined Leeds United back in 2020, but a move failed to materialise.

The Lowdown: Kerk settling in at Lokomotiv

The 26-year-old joined his current club from Utrecht last year but he is still taking a little time to settle into his new surroundings.

Kerk has chipped in with two goals and two assists in his first 15 appearances for Lokomotiv, not an earth-shattering return but an indication that he can chip in occasionally.

Alas, he has revealed that, had things taken a different course, the speedy winger could now be a Leeds player.

The Latest: Kerk makes Leeds transfer claim

Speaking to FC UtrechtFans [via Sport Witness], Kerk claimed that the Whites wanted to sign him a couple of years ago, only for the potential move to fall through.

He revealed: “There were possibilities to take a step higher in the Eredivisie, but that interest did not materialise.

“After that canceled KNVB Cup final [in 2020 due to the pandemic], Utrecht also wanted to keep me in order to start the fiftieth anniversary year as strong as possible. There was interest from Leeds United at the time, but in the end that did not go through.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-35/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: One that got away

Kerk is someone who could have provided Marcelo Bielsa with an additional wide option at Leeds, bringing much-needed attacking depth to his squad in the process.

While not necessarily an elite player, the Dutchman still enjoyed 85 goal involvements in 175 appearances for Utrecht, highlighting his quality in the final third.

Also, at 26 Kerk is still in and around the peak years of his career, so going back in for him this summer could be worth considering for Leeds, especially if Raphinha moves on amid ongoing speculation over his future at Elland Road.

In other news, a journalist has made a key claim regarding Bielsa’s Leeds future. Read more here.

Clarke the key for Blues after McDonald ton

Michael Clarke was the first of Australia’s Test players to make good use of their current round of Sheffield Shield outings, but he will need to turn his 71 into a big hundred after Andrew McDonald’s century put Victoria on top

In a rare Sheffield Shield appearance, Michael Clarke finished the day unbeaten on 71•Getty ImagesMichael Clarke was the first of Australia’s Test players to make good use of their current round of Sheffield Shield outings, but he will need to turn his 71 into a big hundred after Andrew McDonald’s century put Victoria on top. New South Wales were relying heavily on Clarke at the end of the second day, after the rest of their star-studded top order faltered.Shane Watson, Phillip Hughes, Usman Khawaja and Phil Jaques all made starts but failed to capitalise, and at stumps the Blues were 5 for 171, still trailing by 207 runs. Adding to their problems, they had just lost Brad Haddin, bowled by Clint McKay for 2, late in the day, and Steven Smith was fresh to the crease on 4.However, Clarke’s form was a positive not just for New South Wales but also for the Australian side, after his struggles during last month’s Test series in India. He has spent much of the past fortnight worrying about his captaincy and batting in the shorter formats, but he enjoyed the return to the red ball two weeks away from the Ashes opener. He struck only three boundaries but his cautious tempo was justified after the Blues wobbled to 3 for 75. Peter Siddle, who is aiming to win a spot for the Brisbane Test, collected the first wicket when Hughes played on for 12, and in his first game for New South Wales, Watson scored briskly but was caught in the gully off the bowling of John Hastings for 20.That left plenty of attention on Khawaja, who began the season with a double-century and is viewed as the next in line for a Test call-up should the selectors run out of patience with Michael Hussey or Marcus North this summer. However, Khawaja departed for 23, snapped up at first slip by Cameron White off the spin of Jon Holland.Clarke began the rebuilding process with Jaques, one of eight Test cricketers in the line-up, who was batting in the unfamiliar No. 5 position. His innings ended on 28 when he was caught behind off McDonald, who bowled tightly to end the day with 1 for 11 off nine overs. It was a happy day all-round for McDonald, who still holds a Cricket Australia contract but has slipped well down the pecking order after playing four Tests in 2008-09. McDonald became the first man to post two centuries this Sheffield Shield season, when he built on David Hussey’s 122 to help drive Victoria to a strong total of 378.McDonald was eventually caught off the bowling of Smith, but the catcher, Nathan Hauritz, had another disappointing day. On the traditionally spin-friendly SCG, Hauritz finished with figures of 0 for 74 from 15 overs, while his main challenger for a spin position in the Test team, Smith, grabbed 2 for 45.

Our toughest selection – Baptiste

Ragheb Aga, the former Sussex allrounder, and Seren Waters have been confirmed in Kenya’s 13-man squad for the Intercontinental Cup match against Afghanistan after what the coach, Eldine Baptiste, called his toughest selection meeting.Kenya are out of contention for the final – which will be contested between Scotland and Afghanistan after Zimbabwe forfeited their match against Scotland – but are looking towards next year’s World Cup. The availability of Aga, who was released by Sussex at the end of the 2010 season, and the talented Waters adds depth to the team which will be captained by Maurice Ouma.”This is an extremely important match for us against a very good Afghanistan team,” Baptiste said. “The selection meeting we had was the longest I have been involved in during my time in Kenya and that is a reflection on the fact that we now have a lot more competition for places in the squad which is a good thing.”There are some players who were very close to selection and are very unlucky to miss out on the final 13, this means that those who did make the squad know they have to perform well as there are people waiting in the wings to step in and grab an opportunity. While our main focus is on the World Cup next February, this four day game is an important part of our preparation and we will be looking to perform to our best.”Squad Maurice Ouma (capt & wk), Seren Waters, David Obuya, Collins Obuya, Steve Tikolo, Rakep Patel, Jimmy Kamande, Ragheb Aga, Thomas Odoyo, Nehemiah Odhiambo, James Ngoche, Hiren Varaiya, Elijah Otieno

Richardson sad at contract snubs

Richie Richardson, the former West Indies batsman, is disappointed that leading Caribbean cricketers have declined to sign central contracts with the board

Richie Richardson believes Darren Sammy has the passion to succeed as West Indies captain•AFP

Richie Richardson, the former West Indies captain, is disappointed that leading Caribbean cricketers have declined to sign central contracts with the board. Chris Gayle, the recently replaced leader, along with allrounders Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard turned down offers from the WICB so that they are free to take up lucrative Twenty20 offers around the world. At the time of not signing their contracts the three players – some of the most marketable Twenty20 stars in the world – insisted they remained fully committed to West Indies cricket. Gayle and Bravo are part of the Test squad currently in Sri Lanka, and Pollard is likely to be included for the one-day series next month, but their decisions have done little to ease tensions between the players and the board.”Playing for your country should always be No. 1 then anything else comes after that,” Richardson told ESPNcricinfo. “It might be different for a player who is coming towards the end of his career or hasn’t been selected much, but the main players should be contracted to the board. I know they’ve stated their full commitment to West Indies, but clearly there are distractions around the game these days.”West Indies are a distant second favourite for the Tests in Sri Lanka which start on November 15, but Richardson is hopeful they can mount a challenge in a country where they never won a Test in six attempts. That’s despite the efforts of Brian Lara in 2001-02 when he hit 688 runs, a record for a three-Test series, and still West Indies lost 3-0. Yet the scale of their challenge was clear on the opening day of their warm-up match against a President’s XI when the visitors’ batting crumbled for 176.”I’m always hopeful and I always want West Indies to do well. But it’s going to be tough, there’s no hiding from that,” Richardson said as he announced the launch of his own cricket academy in Antigua. “Sri Lanka are playing really good cricket and have just beaten Australia. It’s a tough country to tour for any team, not many sides have gone there in recent years and won, and West Indies haven’t been playing all that well, but you have to go in with a positive frame of mind. Anything is possible.”Darren Sammy has replaced Gayle as captain after the West Indies board decided it was time for a fresh face to take the side forward into the World Cup and beyond. Richardson has first-hand knowledge of the unique challenges involved in leading West Indies having captained them on 24 occasions – albeit before the severe decline set in – and believes Sammy has the personality and skills to be a success.”It’s too early to make a judgement on whether it’s a good or bad move, but from what I’ve seen he is a very passionate cricketer which is what is needed,” he said. “He’s been playing well in the last couple of years and he’s shown in some of his performances that he has leadership qualities so I’ll certainly be supporting him.”However, Richardson is mystified by the absence of Ramnaresh Sarwan who wasn’t even offered a central contract after the board voiced concerns over his fitness following a string of injuries. To leave out a batsman averaging 41.73 in Tests seems a luxury West Indies can ill-afford. “I don’t know what is going on with Sarwan but he’s certainly got the time to get back into the side,” Richardson said. “He’s one of our premier batsmen and I’m not quite sure why he isn’t with the team or what the problem is. He’s been playing cricket back home so should be there.”While the immediate prospects for West Indies remain bleak, with his academy hat on Richardson is convinced the game can thrive again on and off the field. “There are still a lot of youngsters in the Caribbean who want to play cricket,” he said. “Obviously there are other distractions these days, but I’m convinced the passion is still there and will always be there. It’s part of the Caribbean way of life. It will always be in the veins of Caribbean people.”
