Brizola presidente”.

West Ham United: Tomas Soucek talks underway

According to a report by West Ham insiders Claret and Hugh, the Hammers are eyeing their first major piece of January business as Tomas Soucek’s representatives are in talks over a new contract.

The Lowdown: Soucek essential to Moyes

Since his arrival at Rush Green, Soucek has played a vital role in David Moyes’ successful run at the club. In the East-London club’s emphatic 2020/21 Premier League campaign, the Czech star played in all 38 league games, scoring ten goals from a defensive midfield position.

Soucek joined the Hammers on loan in the January 2020 window from Slavia Prague. Impressing during this stint, West Ham enacted the £15 million fee agreed in the temporary deal, adding to the £4 million loan fee Slavia had already received.

Financially, the Irons’ investment has already more than doubled, with the Czech Republic captain’s value soaring up to an incredible £40.5 million.

However, the partnership formed between Soucek and Declan Rice is far more valuable than anything that could be gained by a departure.

The Latest: Irons in contract talks

According to a report by club insiders Claret and Hugh, Soucek’s representatives are currently in talks over a new deal.

Currently, the midfielder has two years left, with the option of an extra two years. However, contract talks are being held on the basis that he will receive a substantial salary increase with a new fixed four-year deal.

The Hammers have not signed a single player yet this month, but it’s fair to say this could be the most crucial piece of business they do.

The Verdict: Show him the money

Rice himself has reiterated how important Soucek is to Moyes’ West Ham side, having named him their player of the season following his ‘unbelievable’ form in the Premier League last year.

West Ham would certainly not be short of bidders if the two parties failed to come to an agreement on a new contract, but with the possibility of huge bids arriving for Rice this summer, the club have realised how important it is for Soucek to be nailed down by a new long-term contract.

Losing Rice would be a huge blow for the Hammers but additionally losing Soucek would completely destroy the spine of this West Ham side, meaning Moyes would have to start from scratch all over again.

Northamptonshire squeeze into top four

ScorecardNorthamptonshire clinched fourth place in the northern group of the Friends Provident t20 as they eased to a seven-wicket win at the Emirates Durham ICG on Sunday. They booked a trip to Taunton for the quarter-finals on July 26 or 27 as they won with 13 balls to spare after Durham limped to 129 for 5 from their 20 overs.Northamptonshire had looked like winning by an even bigger margin when they were 121 for one with 5.1 overs left. But they lost Alex Wakely lbw to Steve Harmison for 35 and two balls later Rob White edged Gareth Breese to Phil Mustard. The offspinner enjoyed the rarity of delivering a wicket maiden in a Twenty20 game, but White’s 63 off 49 balls had all but delivered victory. He continued his recent good form by hitting two sixes on his way to 50 off 38 balls and also carved Harmison for two fours when the paceman gave him width outside off stump.Liam Plunkett took the first wicket when left-hander Chaminda Vaas shaped to pull and got a top edge to slip. But with 57 already on the board in the seventh over the visitors were well on their way.Albie Morkel hit Durham’s only six over mid-wicket as 13 came off their final over, bowled by Northamptonshire skipper Andrew Hall. Arriving in the 11th over, South African Morkel seemed content to push the ball around until that final over, when he also hit one of his two fours in finishing unbeaten on 35, made off 27 balls.Mark Stoneman was Durham’s top scorer with 36, but he faced 41 balls and hit only three fours before slicing to backward point in the 16th over. He was also dropped twice at deep midwicket, by Lee Daggett on eight and Rob White on 25.Durham had only 21 on the board after five overs when Stoneman survived a chance thanks to Daggett’s drop before Ben Stokes rubbed salt into Jack Brooks’ wounds by twice driving him through extra cover for four.Stokes made 24 when his weakness against spin was exposed by James Middlebrook’s first ball. It pitched outside the left-hander’s leg stump but as he shaped to play it through midwicket it turned and hurried on to bowl him.At a time when Durham needed to accelerate in mid-innings, Middlebrook conceded only six runs in his first two overs and the batsmen continued to show little sign of urgency until the final over.

Sunderland avoided Jonson Clarke-Harris disaster

Sunderland made a number of additions to their squad throughout the January transfer window as Kristjaan Speakman looked to improve the squad.

Trai Hume, Patrick Roberts, Jay Matete, Danny Batth, Jermain Defoe and Jack Clarke all came in, with the Black Cats attempting to bolster their side to improve their chances of jumping out of League One at the end of the season.

Whilst it is easy to focus on the players who did come in, it is also worth looking at the deals that Sunderland also missed out on.

Relief

Fans will be relieved that the Black Cats ultimately opted against a deal to sign Jonson Clarke-Harris to add to their striking options.

Earlier this month, Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony confirmed that the club were interested in signing the centre-forward in the January transfer window.

talkSPORT reporter Alex Crook claimed that the Championship outfit wanted a fee in the region of £6m for the English striker.

Speakman avoided a big transfer nightmare by refusing to pay the asking price and opting against a deal for the attacker last month. It could have been a huge mistake for the club to shell out such a fee to sign a player who has struggled for form this season, as a big-money move could have seen then replicate the unsuccessful signing of Will Grigg who joined for £4m but only bagged eight goals.

In the Championship for the Posh, he has scored five goals and provided two assists in 27 appearances. He has missed eight ‘big chances’ and only completed a measly 56% of his attempted passes throughout the campaign, which suggests that he has struggled both in front of goal and with his all-around play.

Therefore, he is seemingly a player lacking in confidence and may not have been able to hit the ground running at the Stadium of Light. Paying a whopping £6m transfer fee for a player who is currently failing to deliver in the Championship does not appear to be a wise move on paper and Speakman agreed.

Supporters will surely be feeling relieved that their club did not decide to splash a ludicrous amount of money on the striker. Although, it is a shame that a loan deal was not on the cards for the 27-year-old as he has shown that he has the potential to be a top-qualtiy player in League One.

He scored 31 times for Peterborough last season as he fired them to promotion and taking a gamble on him rediscovering his form on loan could have been worthwhile. However, that was not one of the options on the table for Sunderland and they were right to avoid splashing out £6m on him.

Speculation remains over Ireland's Zimbabwe trip

Speculation over whether Ireland and Scotland would travel to Zimbabwe for their Intercontinental Cup matches in October continued despite reports that Ireland have already agreed to make the trip

Cricinfo staff11-Aug-2010Speculation over whether Ireland and Scotland would travel to Zimbabwe for their Intercontinental Cup matches in October continued despite reports that Ireland have not only already agreed to make the trip, but have also added three one-day internationals against the full Zimbabwe national side to their itinerary. There had been a possibility that the Intercontinental Cup games against Zimbabwe would take place in South Africa, and there has been no official confirmation of a change of venue and no announcement from Cricket Ireland.Zimbabwe withdrew from Test cricket in 2006 and were subsequently admitted to the Intercontinental Cup on the understanding that Zimbabwe XI’s four home games would be played at neutral venues. But along with the relative political stability in the country, Zimbabwe Cricket has worked hard to improve its structures after divisive squabbling between players and administrators had wrecked cricket in the country.”When we were admitted to the Intercontinental Cup, we agreed to play our home games elsewhere,” ZC managing director Ozias Bvute told . “Subsequently, we made the ICC aware that we were no longer comfortable playing our home games away since the conditions that existed when we agreed to play away no longer existed.”It appears increasingly likely that both Ireland and Scotland will indeed be travelling to Zimbabwe. Both Kenya and Afghanistan recently played their Intercontinental Cup matches in the country, and Zimbabwe also hosted Sri Lanka and India in a one-day tri-series in June this year.”We are in discussions with the ICC, Zimbabwe Cricket and the governments in Edinburgh and London,” said Roddy Smith, Cricket Scotland’s chief executive. “If there is no directive from the UK government not to travel, we may go because we are part of the ICC family of nations.”

West Ham: GSB join Lucas Ocampos chase

As per Calciomercato, there has been an update on West Ham United’s summer transfer plans as news emerges on Sevilla forward Lucas Ocampos.

The Lowdown: Moyes chasing attacking additions…

It is no secret that David Moyes is actively seeking upgrades to his West Ham attack in the summer as the next transfer window seems set to be an interesting one.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-newest-updates/” title=”West Ham newest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Hammers lodged multiple late January bids in an attempt to help bolster Moyes’ forward line, but moves for the likes of Duvan Zapata (Atalanta) and Darwin Nunez (Benfica) ultimately failed to materialise (Sky Sports).

Jesse Lingard of Manchester United, another long-time Moyes target, is also at the centre of West Ham’s interest as the club also weigh attacking midfield options.

Now, as per Calciomercato, it appears that another new forward has come onto GSB’s transfer radar.

The Latest: West Ham eyeing Ocampos move…

According to their information, West Ham, and by extension the club’s owners GSB, are now eyeing a move for Sevilla ace Ocampos alongside Wolverhampton Wanderers.

It is also believed that the Argentina winger ‘may leave Sevilla in the summer’ despite still having another two years on his contract.

The Verdict: Good option for Moyes?

The report is unclear as to just how much Ocampos would cost West Ham, but according to Transfermarkt, his value has dropped by £18m since late 2020. Indeed, once estimated at around £45m, that number has since plummeted to £27m as GSB and co enter the picture for him.

Scoring a career total of 84 goals, the 27-year-old has racked up eight goals and four assists in all competitions so far this season, potentially meaning Sevilla’s asking price could make or break GSB’s decision to lodge a formal offer.

Ocampos has displayed real ability in recent years, with Spanish reporter and Breaking The Lines analyst Javier Parra Peña lauding him as a ‘more complete attacker’ and praising his ‘sensational’ impact at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium (Twitter).

Whether or not the South American could repeat this form under Moyes at West Ham remains to be seen, but as he becomes linked with a Sevilla exit, it’s interesting to see the Irons come into contention.

Everton: Exciting Warrington claim

Everton loanee Lewis Warrington is ‘thriving’ at Tranmere Rovers and has ‘massive potential’, reports The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland, and he is now in discussions to extend his ‘deal at Everton’.

The lowdown

Warrington has come through the academy ranks at Everton, having joined the club at the age of six.

The 19-year-old is a season-ticket holder at Goodison Park and considers former Toffees left-back Leighton Baines his idol.

The ‘all-round midfielder’ has made a total of 20 appearances for Everton at Under-23 level but in January, the club decided to give him a taste of the men’s game.

They loaned him out to Micky Mellon’s Tranmere, who are fighting for promotion to League One.

Significantly, Warrington’s Everton contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.

The latest

Boyland says that Warrington has been shining during his stint across Merseyside at Preston Park.

He’s spoken to Tranmere sporting director and former Everton striker James Vaughan, who claims the Birkenhead-born talent has ‘massive potential’.

And he ponders whether the youngster can force his way into Frank Lampard’s ‘toiling’ midfield.

Warrington is in talks over extending his ‘deal at Everton’, but he’ll need to see a path to first-team football with The Toffees before he commits.

In the meantime, he’s attracting interest from other clubs, meaning he’s ‘unlikely to be short’ of rival offers.

The verdict

Warrington has nailed down a spot in Mellon’s side, starting their last ten League Two matches.

He ranks among the top six players in the squad for both tackles (1.5) and shots (1.2) per 90 minutes, and that speaks to his rounded skill-set.

Indeed, Warrington has operated as a defensive midfielder, central midfielder and an attacking midfielder at different points of his loan spell.

If The Toffees successfully extend his deal but allow Fabian Delph, who’s also out of contract in the summer, to leave, then that could theoretically open up a spot in Lampard’s senior ranks for the boyhood fan.

In other news, Everton are willing to sell this attacker.

Newcastle eyeing late deal for Dele Alli

A major update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Tottenham outcast Dele Alli…

What’s the talk?

The Athletic’s David Ornstein has revealed that the Magpies are now looking to secure a deal for the England international ahead of one of their Premier League rivals.

He tweeted: “EXCL: Newcastle make dramatic late attempt to pip Everton to Dele Alli signing after losing out on Lingard. #NUFC have enquired to take Dele on loan just as permanent Everton move enters final stages. Unclear if it will succeed.”

St James’ rocking

This move could get St James’ Park rocking, as Alli has the potential to be a stunning addition to Eddie Howe’s squad and possibly help them to secure Premier League survival this season.

They are currently 18th in the table and struggling badly, with two league wins under their belt so far in 2021/22, coming against Leeds and Burnley.

Alli has proven himself at the top level in England, with 67 goals and 61 assists in 269 games for Spurs, This includes 51 goals and 37 assists in 180 Premier League matches for the north Londonders, and he has also managed eight or more league goals in four separate seasons.

This suggests that he could have the quality to come in and offer a real goal threat for the Magpies in the coming months if they are able to secure this deal. Therefore, St James’ Park could be rocking if he comes through the door, as his pedigree will surely come with an anticipation and excitement that he could be the player to pull Howe’s side over the line.

Along with that, the supporters could also be buzzing to see PIF hijacking Everton’s deal for Alli as the Toffees are only four points ahead of them in the table. This means that they could stop a relegation rival from strengthening their squad, whilst duly improving their own in the process, making this a sensational piece of potential business by the club.

Cook rides his luck before Amir and Ajmal's blitz

Plays of the Day from the third day of the third Test between England and Pakistan at The Oval

Andrew Miller at The Oval20-Aug-2010

England’s slide started when Saeed Ajmal snuck one through Kevin Pietersen’s defences•Getty Images

Shy of the day
“All he needs is a bit of luck,” said Andrew Strauss on the eve of the Test, but given the frame of mind with which he began this pivotal day, Alastair Cook had probably ruled out any charitable donations to his cause, as he battled to emerge from the most chronic slump of his career. Having done most of the hard work, however, on 97 he received final confirmation that his fortunes had come full circle. A casual forward defensive rolled back up to the pitch to Mohammad Asif, who picked it up in a mild huff and flung a wild and wasteful shy straight back over the batsman’s head, and some three feet beyond the reach of the sprawling Kamran Akmal. It wasn’t the most conventional means of saving one’s immediate international career, but Cook was happy to accept all offerings.Let-offs of the day
Brilliantly though he battled – and the full value of his effort was plain to see in England’s dramatic post-tea slump – Cook did indeed get the rub of the green he needed to get his game brain back in full working order. Twice in two balls in the fifth over of the day, he poked outside off to Mohammad Asif and watched heart-in-mouth as the ball fizzed through the slips and away for consecutive fours. But the bigger moment came towards the end of the first hour. A beauty from Wahab Riaz exploded off the edge and headed at a catchable height towards the cordon. But first and second slip gestured limply to one another, and the moment was lost there and then. The three false shots had contributed 12 runs to his cause, and suddenly Cook’s innings was up and running on 27 not out – only two runs shy of his best innings of the summer.Breakthrough of the day
Having watched Cook end his wait for three figures, Kevin Pietersen evidently believed that his own time had come. He looked in prime form in the second hour after lunch as he punched along to 23 not out in a stand with Jonathan Trott that looked likely to define the match. But then, in the first over of the final session, he was stitched up a treat by the spin of Saeed Ajmal, to set in motion the most gripping mini-session of the day. The first five balls of the over were tossed up towards the pads, as Ajmal relied on his doosra to lull KP’s defences. The sixth, however, was a snorter – a ripping offbreak from round the wicket, that pitched on off stump, gripped the turf and leapt through a yawning gate into the top of off and middle. Pietersen looked bemused, as well he might. Spin had once again proved his downfall.Anchor of the day
The jury is out on Trott’s mindnumbing innings. While he was , his go-slow performance seemed brilliantly and belligerently perverse – precisely the sort of Tavaré-esque prod-fest that is sure to get right up the Australians’ wick in the Ashes later this year. So long as he stayed put, England’s slow march towards a defendable total seemed assured, and in the final over before the tea break, he poked Asif back down the wicket to register his century of dot-balls for the innings. But when play resumed, and moments after Pietersen’s departure, Trott undid all his good work by slapping Mohammad Amir straight to Azhar Ali in the gully. It was the type of catch that’s been going down for Pakistan all summer. But this time it stuck, and England were officially on the skids.Delivery of the day
After a hefty workload and concerns about his fitness following a bout of dehydration in the first innings, Amir was used sparingly by Pakistan today, with only two overs in the whole of the afternoon session. It meant that when he finally returned, for a sensational burst after tea, he was buzzing with energy and gagging to make up for lost time. Ever since his exploits against Australia at Headingley, he has been earning comparisons with Wasim Akram, and his delivery to deceive England’s form batsman, Matt Prior, was straight out of the great man’s repertoire. Round the wicket, searing pace, full length and late swing, and just grazing the edge as a flat-footed Prior prodded in vain.Deja vu of the day
From 194 for 3 after 61 overs at tea, England plummeted to 221 for 9 in 15 of the highest-octane overs imaginable, as Ajmal and Amir combined in a spin and swing onslaught to rival Mushtaq and Waqar at Lord’s 18 years ago. But then, with the ground pulsating and England clinging on for dear life, the umpires pulled the plug in light that was fading but far from unplayable. It was a monstrous anticlimax and incredibly frustrating for all but the home dressing room – and the Surrey officials who might have been sweating on refunds for an early finish tomorrow. But it was strangely apposite timing. Four years ago on this very day, Pakistan had refused to come out after tea in protest at Darrell Hair’s umpiring. Had they done so, on this evidence, they could have won the game within an hour.
