NUFC to ‘throw everything’ at PL gem

A big Newcastle United transfer update has emerged, regarding their efforts to sign Jesse Lingard in the January transfer window…

What’s the talk?

According to The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, the Magpies are set to ‘throw everything’ at Manchester United to land the midfielder this month.

The reporter claims that sources have told him that the confidence over a deal being done has been growing over the weekend, with the window slamming shut in less than ten days.

Elation

This will surely leave Newcastle fans elated for several reasons. Firstly, they will be delighted to read that PIF are willing to make a huge effort to sign Lingard and that they will do whatever it takes to bring him to St. James’ Park.

It shows that they are willing to go the extra mile to land a key target and supporters will be happy with the club’s attempts to strengthen the attacking midfield position, albeit there may be frustration at the lack of progress in the centre-back department.

The fans will also be buzzing with this news simply because of the prospect of Lingard playing in black and white in the second half of the campaign.

He is a proven top-flight player and he could add some much-needed goals and assists to the side.

No Newcastle central midfielder has managed more than two combined goals and assists, after all, with Jonjo Shelvey, Sean Longstaff and Joelinton all on two.

Meanwhile, Lingard has two goals in 89 minutes of football in the Premier League this season and produced nine goals and four assists in the division on loan to West Ham last term.

Former Manchester United coach Michael Carrick once lauded the midfielder, saying: “I think his movement is excellent. It’s something that sounds quite simple, but it’s difficult to defend against.

“He senses where the space is and how to use it. I wouldn’t necessarily say he’s a dribbler with skills and tricks but he’s dynamic. How he plays, he is unique in some ways. You don’t see so much of that now as everyone wants to get on the ball. Off the ball, he’s very effective.”

This suggests that the England international could come in and score the goals that Howe has been lacking in the midfield areas.

Therefore, he could be a fantastic addition to the side and one that will leave fans feeling elated, due to his proven quality at this level.

All-round Samuels helps Jamaica to clean sweep

ScorecardMarlon Samuels made 36 and took two wickets•Associated Press

The series result was on expected lines as United States of America failed to register a win in each of their three matches against Jamaica. USA captain Steve Massiah raised hopes of a win for the hosts but Jamaica won the second and final Twenty20 by 19 runs in Lauderhill. Marlon Samuels made a satisfying return to competitive cricket with a brisk 36 and took two wickets in an all-round performance for Jamaica.Opening the innings, Samuels batted till the 15th over and was involved in stands of 40 and 43 with Dean Morgan and Shawn Findlay respectively. Samuels made a 34-ball 36 with three fours, before he was caught and bowled by Timroy Allen. Allen also claimed the wicket of Findlay, who hit three sixes in his 37. Lennox Cush picked up a couple of middle-order wickets but Jamaica accelerated to push the score to 141.USA made a steady start to the chase as their openers added 49. Much depended on their captain Massiah, who was well set and approaching a fifty. He took USA to 90 by the 14th over but couldn’t carry on after scoring 47. A double-strike by Samuels got Jamaica right back in the contest and the hosts failed to capitalise on the good start provided by their captain. They were restricted to 122 in their 20 overs.

Celtic face rival in Zinedine Ferhat chase

Celtic face a real battle to land Zinedine Ferhat with Trabzonspor ‘on a mission’ to win the race, according to Foot Mercato.

The lowdown

The French publication originally reported on New Year’s Eve that Nimes Olympique star Ferhat was on The Hoops’ radar.

The 28-year-old, who’s predominantly a right winger but can also play in a central attacking midfield role, is out of contract at the end of the current season.

He’s valued at £4.05million by Transfermarkt, but it’s worth noting that he’s also free to strike a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club ahead of the summer.

The latest

Ferhat has been ‘ardently courted’ by Celtic as well as Ligue 1 outfits Montpellier and Saint-Etienne, but there’s now a chance he ends up in Turkey, according to the French outlet.

Trabzonspor sources have indicated that Ferhat is a ‘priority recruit’, with ‘significant financial resources’ available for the pursuit.

They’re determined to secure his signature and could initiate talks ‘in the coming days’.

The verdict

Celtic should make a big push to see off Trabzonspor – Zerhat’s 2020/21 season was hugely impressive, as he combined six goals with ten assists for a side that finished down in 19th and suffered relegation.

Only Lyon’s Memphis Depay, who subsequently joined FC Barcelona, set up more goals in the French top flight last term.

Celtic started the January window strongly but the tide seems to be turning. They lost out to Middlesbrough after holding talks with Riley McGree and now Blackburn-bound Dilan Markanday seems to evaded them.

Ange Postecoglou may be frustrated if another target moves elsewhere.

In other news, Frank McAvennie thinks this summer signing could leave.

Bowlers dominate at Edgbaston

There was a time, not so long ago, when batsmen visiting Edgbaston would drool in anticipation. Not any more.

George Dobell at Edgbaston04-Jun-2010
ScorecardThere was a time, not so long ago, when batsmen visiting Edgbaston would drool in anticipation. The slow, flat pitches promised a chance to fill their boots and, between the start of 2007 and the end of 2009, only five championship matches here ended in an outright result as sides found it well nigh impossible to claim 20 wickets. Not any more. Edgbaston is a ground transformed. No side has taken maximum bonus batting bonus points here this season and, judging by the evidence of the first day of this match, they’re not about to start. While Somerset’s first innings total of 268 might appear, from a glance at the scorecard, a modest total, it is likely to prove highly competitive. The pitch is offering assistance to bowlers of all types, with Warwickshire’s seamers achieving steepling bounce and their spinners gaining sharp turn and bounce. Batting, at times, was very difficult indeed. Some made it appear more difficult than others, however. Arul Suppiah laboured for 96 minutes and 56 deliveries over his two runs – his dismissal in the 24th over was cricket’s version of a mercy killing – while Jos Buttler (17 balls) was little more fluent.Others, however, coped more easily. Marcus Trescothcik, after a sticky start, produced some characteristically thumping drives, while James Hildreth underlined the impression that he has taken a step forward this season. Looking compact and solid, yet unleashing some rasping square cuts, Hildreth passed 50 for the sixth time in his last seven championship innings. Craig Kisewetter, Peter Trego and Alfonso Thomas also weighed in with useful contributions.Somerset also benefited from Warwickshire’s profligacy in the field. Depending on your level of generosity, the hosts spurned at least half-a-dozen chances, with young keeper Richard Johnson responsible for half of them.Johnson, only 21 and playing just his second championship match, understandably struggled. He can rarely, if ever, have kept to a legspinner of Imran Tahir’s class and this dry pitch was hardly the easiest training ground. No doubt he will improve for the experience. It was a reminder, however, of how much Warwickshire miss Tim Ambrose. Or an in-from Tim Ambrose, anyway. As things stand, it appears that Ambrose is on his way out of Edgbaston. Out of contract at the end of the season, he is currently unable to maintain a place in the team after averaging just 11.63 with the bat in championship cricket.Rather than playing for the seconds, he has been given time off to clear his head and take stock. Already Hampshire have issued an official 28-day notice of approach and it is likely that other counties will follow. It seems hard to believe that it was just 15 months ago that he was playing, with some success, for the Test team in the Caribbean.None of Johnson’s reprieves were hugely costly. But, on a pitch where Trescothick reasoned that 250 was a good score and on which batting will only grow more difficult, they could prove crucial. Zander de Bruyn, on 12, was missed off an outside edge off the bowling of Woakes, before Kieswetter should have been stumped off Tahir when he had just seven. Trego, on 14, was also missed off the impressive Ant Botha.Johnson was not the only culprit. Varun Chopra, at midwicket, put down Trescothick on 32, off Maddy’s first ball, while Tahir missed a hard caught-and-bowled opportunity offered by Kartik and Rikki Clarke, at slip, put down a fiendishly tricky chance offered by Thomas off Botha.Clarke more than made amends with the ball, however. Bowling admirably straight and with some venom, he was easily the pick of the Warwickshire seamers and fully deserved to be handed the second new ball. After promising much but delivering little as a bowler for some years, there are now signs that Clarke – in tandem with Warwickshire’s new bowling coach, Graeme Welch – is beginning to harness his undoubted ability. Here he dislodged Suppiah, who had taken a stinging blow to the helmet from a Boyd Rankin bouncer, with a short ball that reared on the batsmen, before Buttler edged a similar delivery to slip and Trescothick was drawn into feeling for one angled across him. At the time Clarke had figures of 3 for 3.Botha was, perhaps surprisingly, the more potent of Warwickshire’s spinners. He dismissed Hildreth, trying to withdraw his bat, with an unplayable delivery that bounced and turned sharply, before Kieswetter and Phillips were caught at short leg as they struggled to nullify the spin. The wicket of Hildreth was his 300th in the first-class game.Botha also took a fine catch at deep mid-wicket to dismiss Trego, who was slog-sweeping, before Woakes returned to wrap-up the tail. Given the spinners’ success, however, it was something of a surprise that Westwood did not call them into the attack until the 50th (Imran) and 63rd (Botha) overs.Warwickshire faced only 16 deliveries before stumps, but it was enough to suggest they face a torrid examination on day two. Their first innings scores in their last three games (113 against Lancashire, 127 against Somerset and 100 against Durham) don’t exactly inspire confidence, so when Ian Westwood was caught at gully, trying to avoid a short ball that climbed on him from Charl Willoughby, it brought a familiar groan from the Edgbaston faithful. It will be a surprise if this match reaches a fourth day.

'Murali doesn't deserve the record' – Emerson

Ross Emerson, the Australian umpire who no-balled Muttiah Muralitharan during an ODI against England in Adelaide in 1999, insists the offspinner doesn’t deserve his record of most wickets in Tests and the 50-over format

Cricinfo staff08-Jul-2010Ross Emerson, the Australian umpire who no-balled Muttiah Muralitharan for throwing, including in an ODI in Adelaide in 1999, insists the offspinner doesn’t deserve his record of most wickets in Tests and the 50-over format.”I haven’t changed my view in 15 years – he doesn’t deserve the record,” Emerson told Sydney’s . “You couldn’t compare his record to Shane Warne’s – no one ever doubted the legality of Warne’s action. Murali was a great competitor and a great bowler but a lot of the time he just didn’t bowl within the limits of the law.”Murali will retire from Tests following the first Test against India in Galle that starts on July 18. He was first no-balled for “throwing” by Darrell Hair in the MCG Test in 1995 and it was almost ten years later that the ICC amended the rules pertaining to suspect bowling actions, permitting all bowlers to straighten their bowling arms by up to 15 degrees.Hair, unlike Emerson, had no problems with Murali holding the record, but didn’t regret his decision to no-ball him. Instead, he argued, the ICC’s decision to change the rules vindicated his actions. “I have no angst over him holding the record but the fact that the rules had to be changed to handle bowlers like that vindicated my actions and the actions of other umpires who called him,” Hair said.”Once they changed the rules and made it legal for bowlers to bend their arm to 15 per cent they gave an advantage to a couple of bowlers who could get something extra from that rule. I would rather see the rule as it was where you couldn’t bend your arm at all. That would mean everyone was the same.”Emerson, who later stood down and was not reappointed to the umpires panel, claimed he had been asked to no-ball Murali by an Australian official and was ignored once the incident became a major issue. “I was called to a meeting with him and, knowing that I had called some other players, he told me I had set standards in certain areas which I should uphold in Adelaide,” Emerson said. “Yet everything blew up after I called Murali and when I saw him again he wouldn’t even look at me.”Darrell Hair and I were called the controversial ones yet the rule change proved us right. The controversial ones were the umpires who thought he was a chucker yet weren’t brave enough to call him. A lot of umpires agreed with what we did but didn’t have the courage to call him.”Murali, meanwhile, said he had proved his action was legitimate after being cleared by a series of Tests conducted by the ICC. “I have no regrets at all of being called a controversial bowler,” he told reporters in Colombo. “I have proved everything by use of technology. I don’t regret anything. My talent is God’s gift.”Nowadays, we use technology for everything. Those who criticise must give bowlers a chance to be tested, not treat them as criminals.”

Everton willing to sell Calvert-Lewin

According to The Mirror, Everton are reportedly willing to sell star striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Calvert-Lewin’s recent form

The 25-year-old has suffered an inconsistent season due to a number of injuries, thereby contributing to Everton’s woes in front of goal. The forward suffered a fractured toe which kept him out for no fewer than 125 days, missing a grand total of 16 games.

As a result, Calvert-Lewin has failed to score a single Premier League goal since August, when he netted three on the bounce in the Toffees’ opening three games.

The Latest: Everton willing to sell

According to a report by The Mirror, Everton are now willing to sell Calvert-Lewin in the summer, whose £72,000-per-week contract runs until the summer of 2025.

Both Arsenal and West Ham have been named as potential suitors, although no approaches have yet been made.

The Verdict: Most important player?

Everton would be silly to sell their star striker if they are to remain in the Premier League, with the division’s all-time leading scorer Alan Shearer claiming that the 25-year-old will “keep scoring goals”.

In 184 games for the Merseyside club, Calvert-Lewin has scored 56 goals. Furthermore, his importance to the Toffees’ creativity in the final third is unparalleled with any other Everton player.

This is illustrated by his statistics, where he ranks in the 97th percentile for total shots, the 96th percentile for pass completion and the 89th percentile for progressive carries (via FB Ref), demonstrating the attacking output that he adds to the team.

Therefore, this seems like a premature call to make. Even though Calvert-Lewin’s form has dipped in recent months, the above figures illustrate that he remains one of Everton’s most important players. Let’s not forget that he whacked in 21 goals last season, after all…

Spurs: Alasdair Gold drops Ndombele update

Tottenham midfielder Tanguy Ndombele has been training away from the first team in recent days, Alasdair Gold has reported for football.london.

The Lowdown: Morecambe substitution

The Frenchman hasn’t exactly been a star under Antonio Conte since the Italian took over in north London. The 25-year-old has started just 10 games all season, the last of which came against Morecambe in the FA Cup a week ago.

Spurs were in danger of being dumped out by the League One side after falling behind, with Ndombele being subbed with 20 minutes remaining. He walked off slowly with Spurs trailing and appeared to slow down further when fans started booing before going straight down the tunnel.

It seems as if that petulance has had an impact at the training ground, with Conte taking action.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Latest: Gold’s update

Gold took to Twitter on Friday afternoon to provide an update on Ndombele, sharing an accompanying article for football.london.

He tweeted: “Understand Tanguy Ndombele has been training separately, away from the first team group at Spurs in recent days at Hotspur Way.”

The reliable reporter claimed within his article that the Frenchman has been training alone following a collective decision from Conte and the club, with his future unclear at this moment in time.

The Verdict: Sell

Ndombele is the club’s joint-biggest earner, but he hasn’t been putting in the performances to reflect that.

He was open to leaving over the summer and would still consider an exit this month, with Spurs reportedly offering his services to Napoli recently.

On that basis, it makes sense for Spurs to sell the midfielder over the coming weeks. The substitution against Morecambe could well turn out to be the final straw, and Fabio Paratici will have a big challenge on his hands to recoup the majority of the £54m that the club spent on Ndombele in 2019.

Rangnick must utilise Lingard for MUFC

Manchester United made no signings in the January transfer window and with a top-four race, FA Cup challenge and qualifying for the Champions League round of 16, Ralf Rangnick must look to his weakened squad to deliver success in the latter stages of the season.

The side currently sits fourth in the table during the winter break, with a game in hand over West Ham United who trail behind by just one point in fifth, so it is really important for the Red Devils boss to capitalise on the opportunity to break away from their competition by securing a run of winning form.

When it comes to form, there are certain players who have been unable to deliver on the expectations that were made of them when they joined the side in the summer, with Jadon Sancho a prime example.

The 21-year-old has been unable to emulate his success at Borussia Dortmund during his time at Old Trafford so far, with just 16 goals and 21 assists in 38 appearances, there has been a clear decline in his performances.

One player who has been a huge talking point during the transfer window is Jesse Lingard, who was tipped to go to Newcastle United or West Ham several times over the last month, but it was reported that the board blocked the move, and now the 29-year-old who was hailed “unique” by Manchester United legend, Michael Carrick, will see out the last five months of his contract at his boyhood club.

With that being said, it could be the perfect opportunity to unleash Lingard back in the team to assist with the top four race and multiple competitions still in sight for the club, especially when his attacking output is better than Sancho this season with two goals and one assist in just 273 minutes of game time, which is almost 1000 minutes less than Sancho so far.

We also saw the impact that the £80k-per-week maestro had on West Ham during his loan stint, helping the Hammers secure a place in Europa League football with nine goals and five assists in just 16 appearances in the final months of last season, and this consistent attacking output is something that Rangnick desperately needs to ensure he can end the season on a high for the club during his first eight months in charge as interim.

Manchester United will take on Middlesbrough in the FA Cup on Friday evening, and it could be the perfect opportunity for the German coach to give Lingard the chance to shine and play a pivotal role in ensuring that the side can move into the next round with ease, giving the club a chance to pick up their first silverware in almost five years.

Spinners earn Gloucestershire tight victory

Spinners Richard Dawson and Aaron Redmond played key roles as Gloucestershire gained only their third Friends Provident t20 win at the expense of Middlesex at Bristol

ScorecardSpinners Richard Dawson and Aaron Redmond played key roles as Gloucestershire gained only their third Friends Provident t20 win at the expense of Middlesex at Bristol. The home side posted 153 for 6 after losing the toss, Hamish Marshall making 52 not out and Alex Gidman 42. There were two wickets each for Pedro Collins and Tim Murtagh. Middlesex looked favourites until Dawson (2 for 20) and Redmond (1 for 26) bowled eight tight overs of spin in mid-innings, helping to restrict the visitors to 149 for 7 and give their side victory by four runs.Dawid Malan hit 44 off 39 balls, with five fours, but lacked support in a disappointing Middlesex batting effort. They needed 12 off the last over, but Steve Kirby bowled Malan with the first delivery and then kept the ball full to ensure there were no boundaries.David Payne claimed 2 for 38 on his t20 debut, while leg-spinner Redmond’s dismissal of Josh Davey was the first wicket since joining Gloucestershire for the remainder of the competition last week.Earlier, the Gladiators had lost openers Will Porterfield and Redmond with only 24 runs on the board. Porterfield pulled a catch to deep midwicket off Collins and Redmond was caught behind driving at Tyrone Henderson. It was 44 for 3 when James Franklin, on 22, overstretched to a delivery from Neil Dexter and was stumped by Ben Scott. Marshall survived a caught and bowled chance to Tom Smith on 10 and went on to share a fourth-wicket stand of 94 with skipper Gidman, who hit sixes off Smith and Murtagh in his 33-ball innings before being caught at long-on.Marshall reached his half-century off 38 balls, with two fours and a six, but Dawson and Kadeer Ali perished in the bid for quick end-of-innings runs and Murtagh produced a tight last over.Defeat cost Middlesex the chance of joining the clubs on 10 points in the South Division, while the result took Gloucestershire to six points from 10 games and just about kept their hopes of a top-four finish alive.
