New Zealand's all-round all-star

Daniel Vettori’s wife calls him the Captain of Everything, which goes back to when he was appointed skipper in all three formats and plans for split leadership with Stephen Fleming were shelved. It could also refer to his role as the team’s best bowler, most consistent batsman and their general in the field. New Zealand have relied so heavily on Vettori so often that despite being in his 100th Test he has celebrated fewer wins (31) than Michael Hussey (33), who is playing his 50th.On the day that Vettori marked his milestone he was once again the star with four wickets, a direct-hit run-out and some well-thought-out field placements. But this time, he had support. From the moment New Zealand strode on to Seddon Park to the time when Vettori led them off to a standing ovation, his men looked sharp. Catches were held, pressure was maintained and Australia were skittled for their lowest total in New Zealand in a decade.Nothing would please New Zealand fans more than seeing Vettori finally enjoy a Test win over Australia. The same intensity will need to be shown over the coming days but Vettori gave his men a good start. They rushed to their captain to congratulate him when his throw from mid-off ended the innings of Ricky Ponting, who has sung the team song after beating New Zealand in nine Tests during his 12-year rivalry with Vettori. It was a big wicket. Tim Southee had picked up Shane Watson early but Ponting and Simon Katich had looked comfortable and the run-out sparked something from the New Zealanders. Southee, who said the team wanted to lift for their captain, went on to collect four wickets and it is only when the fast men back Vettori that New Zealand look at their best. Then there was the plot conceived by Vettori to place a man at deep mid-on, hoping Michael Clarke would try to clear the field off Jeetan Patel. The trap worked. Southee held a good catch – none were spilled during the innings – and although some of the wickets fell to batsman error the bowlers stuck to their plans with diligence. That the pressure built on Australia was yet another tribute to Vettori. He bowled tight, giving the Australians no freedom to attack, and Marcus North and Brad Haddin fell at the other end to Southee when they sought to find runs off him instead. Vettori won his personal rewards at the finish, with three lower-order wickets to finish the innings with 4 for 36 in his 20th over.”It was a good day,” Vettori said. “To turn round from where we were at the Basin, by only being able to take five wickets, and to step up today on a pretty good wicket was impressive. I couldn’t really have asked for too much more from the day’s play. Losing that last wicket right at the end put a little bit of a tarnish on it but I think our track record suggests it has to be five good days as opposed to one.”The first day of his 100th Test could hardly have gone any better. The previous night his father Renzo, who was born in a small village in the Dolomites of Italy, had been invited to present Vettori with the cap for his milestone game.Across the road from Seddon Park, a supermarket was stocking kiwi-fruit imported from the world’s biggest producer of the item. It wasn’t a deliberate tribute to Vettori’s heritage but the abundance of Italian kiwis was especially fitting this week.

Rangers: Borna Barisic happy at Ibrox

Rangers have received a boost with the news that Borna Barisic is happy at the club, as per Football Scotland.

The lowdown

The Gers have already lost one full-back this month, with Everton snapping up Nathan Patterson.

Barisic has also attracted Premier League interest, this time from Watford, who tabled a £2m bid last month which was promptly dismissed by the Scottish champions.

The Croatian’s £18,000-per-week contract, signed in January 2020, still has two-and-a-half years to run.

The latest

Football Scotland reporters Mark McDougall and Euan Robertson wrote that Barisic is ‘enjoying life in Glasgow’, and it would apparently take a bid of £5m for Rangers to even consider letting him go.

The report added that the Light Blues are in ‘a strong negotiating position’ after the club-record sale of Patterson last week.

The verdict

Keeping Barisic would be a big boost for Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Rangers, and it would also illustrate the benefits of parting with Patterson.

The Croatian is a trusted lieutenant, selected for 12 Premiership games and all six of the Gers’ Europa League group stage matches this season.

He has also been the team’s third strongest performer according to SofaScore metrics, with an average rating of 7.3/10. Indeed, in the Light Blues’ squad, only James Tavernier (3.4) has created more chances per 90 minutes than Barisic.

His former manager Steven Gerrard hailed him as a “top player” back in 2019, praise which is merited judging by the above statistics, so to hear that the 29-year-old is quite happy to remain at Ibrox despite Watford’s interest should come as a real fillip to everyone associated with Rangers.

In other news, many Rangers fans flocked to this double exit claim

Vieira could sign James McArthur 2.0

Patrick Vieira, who was appointed in the summer to succeed Roy Hodgson, spent his first transfer window pinpointing the ageing nature of the squad he inherited, and in his second window he is now speculated to add another young player to his squad, who currently sit 11th in the Premier League.

What’s the word?

Football Scotland has reported today that they understand Crystal Palace are interested in signing Dundee United wonderkid, Kerr Smith, to link up with their U23’s squad.

Palace already snapped up former Dundee academy player, Scott Banks, in the 2020 winter transfer window and are now reportedly set to pay a fee to secure the signing of the 17-year-old defender, hailed “fantastic” by his teammate, Mark Connolly, who is currently on loan to Dunfermline.

Despite Football Scotland reporting that the south London club want to add Smith to their U23’s, the youngster has experience playing first-team football for his Scottish Premiership side, with seven appearances including two in the league cup so far this season.

Thus, it could give him an advantage when it comes to featuring and integrating into Vieira’s first team side.

James McArthur 2.0

If Smith could continue to progress, he could follow in the footsteps of fellow Scotsman and legendary Crystal Palace midfielder, James McArthur, who joined the side back in 2014, back when the young Dundee player was only 10 years old.

McArthur has cemented himself as a fan favourite at the London club, with the 34-year-old offering 238 appearances, 19 goals and 24 assists from his central midfield position over the last seven years.

Smith will surely be hoping to have a career that could match or even exceed that of his Scottish peer and signing for Crystal Palace this January could give the teenager the path to progress and put him in the right direction to reach his potential in top-flight football playing south of the border in the Premier League.

It is clear that Vieira is focused on bringing the average age down in his squad, with the club becoming officially the oldest team in the Premier League just six months ago with an average age of 29.9 years.

However since the Frenchman’s arrival, and his work during the summer transfer window, he has managed to bring it down to 28 years moving them from first into the sixth oldest out of the 20 clubs in the league, thanks to the signings of Michael Olise, Marc Guehi, Conor Gallagher and Odsonne Edouard.

The addition of Smith would only improve this, providing them with a promising option who could be their next McArthur.

Spinners take Durham to the verge of victory

Durham continued to dominate the county curtain-raiser against MCC at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, setting their opponents an improbable target of 526 for victory on day three

31-Mar-2010Close MCC 156 for 7 (Murtagh 27*, Lewis 32*, Blackwell 3-39) and 162 (Malan 41, Borthwick 4-27) require 370 runs to beat Durham 228 for 6 dec (Thorp 79*, Coetzer 52*, Kirby 2-10) and 459 for 9 dec (Coetzer 172, Di Venuto 131, Malan 4-20) with three wickets remaining

Durham ripped through MCC’s batting line-up for the second day in a row to move within three wickets of a resounding victory on day three of the county curtain-raiser at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium. If MCC’s labours in the field on Monday suggested the pink ball being trialled in this fixture offers little for the bowlers, Durham have gone about proving the opposite ever since, rolling their opponents for 162 yesterday and leaving them 156 for seven at stumps. That left MCC 370 runs adrift of a nominal target of 526, with Scott Borthwick and Ian Blackwell sharing six wickets in the final session.Steve Kirby, who took two late wickets last night to leave Durham seven for two, started with another fiery spell this morning. First he beat Blackwell with a bouncer and then clattered Will Smith on the helmet with another short-pitched delivery.Jon Lewis, who has been struggling with a thigh problem for much of the match, came on first change and proceeded to bowl Smith via the bottom edge with his first ball of the innings. Dean Cosker matched that feat, snaring Blackwell’s outside edge with his loosener. Phil Mustard was in at five in a changed Durham order and quickly opened up with a handful of crisp attacking strokes. But debutant Ben Stokes could only add seven before he was pinned lbw by MCC skipper Alex Gidman as Durham stumbled to 74 for five. Mustard dashed a single just before the break to bring up his 50, which included eight fours, but fell two balls into the second session, carving James Middlebrook into the hands of James Taylor. That brought day one centurion Kyle Coetzer and Callum Thorp together and the pair were offered some fairly easy pickings as the frontline bowlers were withdrawn from the action in favour part-time spin from Taylor and Malan.Thorp took full advantage, helping himself to a rare half-century before moving up the gears to pass his previous first-class best of 75 with two thrashed boundaries off Taylor. Coetzer, meanwhile, followed up his career-best 172 in the first innings with an organised but low-key 52 not out. Despite the awkward twilight period closing in, Smith delayed the inevitable declaration by a handful of overs before calling his men in at 228 for six.Just seven of those had been scored when Steve Harmison struck in his third over, Scott Newman playing on for a second failure of the match. MCC soon set about replicating their implosion on day two, with David Sales (2) trapped lbw by Blackwell and Malan (13) lifting the same bowler to substitute fielder Mark Stoneman. Blackwell’s left-arm spin continued to trouble the batsmen, with Gidman bowled for a breezy 17 after missing a paddle sweep. At 44 for four, MCC were in deep trouble. They struggled to 74 before James Foster went lbw for six, Borthwick striking with his first ball of the day. That was his fifth scalp of the match and a sixth could have followed from the next ball when Middlebrook survived another strong shout.Yet he could not capitalise on his reprieve, making just nine before picking out Smith to give Borthwick a second success. Taylor, the 2009 Young Cricketer of the Year made a composed 39 before he too capitulated to Borthwick, pulling a shorter one to Coetzer, who held a smartcatch. By now the result was a formality but Lewis (32 not out) and Murtagh (27 not out)forged a solid eighth-wicket stand to ensure the match would reach a fourth day.Even Harmison, who had puzzlingly contributed just three overs with the new ball, was tempted into a second spell without joy.

Aston Villa: Fans react to Robin Olsen arrival

Aston Villa announced the signing of goalkeeper Robin Olsen on Tuesday evening.

And a number of Villa fans were quick to give their thoughts to the club’s fourth January addition on social media.

The 32-year-old has joined Philippe Coutinho, Lucas Digne and Kerr Smith in moving to the Midlands in 2022, signing on loan until the end of the season.

Steven Gerrard was after a back-up goalkeeper this month to work alongside Emiliano Martinez and Jed Steer and has got his wish with the Sweden international.

Olsen spent the first half of the season with Championship side Sheffield United, where he made 11 appearances. However, he fell out of favour at Bramall Lane, with the Blades willing to cut his stay in Yorkshire short, with Villa now sealing a temporary move from parent club AS Roma.

Villa fans react

This is what these Villa supporters had to say in reply to the club’s official post on Olsen, with one ‘excited’ and another labelling it as ‘decent’.

“I don’t think people understand how great this signing is, allows Sinsalo to go out on loan and get first team football, also Olsen in himself is a great keeper and he’s obviously aware he’s come to be a back up and that’s a great mentality for him to do that.”

Liverpool Carvalho move looks ‘less likely’

Liverpool reporter Carl Markham has shared a somewhat pessimistic update on the Reds’ pursuit of Fulham’s Fabio Carvalho.

The lowdown

Sky Sports’ Vinny O’Connor reported on Sunday that Liverpool had tabled a £5m bid for the Fulham starlet, and Fabrizio Romano followed that up by revealing that Jurgen Klopp’s side would hold fresh talks with the Cottagers on Monday morning.

According to Markham, though, it’s ‘now or never’ for Liverpool as the clock winds down towards the transfer deadline.

Carvalho is out of contract at the end of the current season, so the transfer fee would be determined by a tribunal if the 19-year-old leaves in the summer. The club know that any European suitors would be ‘in a much stronger position’ to snap him up at that point.

The latest

Markham tweeted at 11am Monday morning: “As it currently stands completing a deal for Fabio Carvalho today looks less likely than it may have done 24 hours ago.”

This followed on from an earlier tweet of: “Seems like it is now or never in @LFC’s chase of Fulham’s Fabio Carvalho. Club not keen to go through the compensation tribunal process again in the summer, especially with European clubs in a much stronger position to sign player for a fraction of cost of any fee set by a panel”.

The verdict

How much will Liverpool push for Carvalho? Does they view this as an opportunity they can’t afford to miss? That’s what we’ll find out in the coming hours.

Liverpool have already offered Fulham some concessions, reportedly agreeing to send him back to west London on loan for the remainder of the season so that he can aid the Cottagers’ promotion push. On top of that, though, they may need to fork out more money.

You wonder if Fulham are adding a premium to their demands after receiving just £1.7m for Harvey Elliott in 2019. Indeed, his Transfermarkt value has since risen to £13.5m, so the Championship leaders may have wised up after the last time they sold a teenage starlet to Liverpool.

In other news, Neil Jones dropped several transfer claims on the morning of Deadline Day.

India's island dreams shatter again

India’s exit may not create the seismic activity that followed the early flight home in the 2007 World Cup, but it is bound to produce plenty of harsh assessment

Andrew McGlashan in St Lucia12-May-2010India have had another Caribbean nightmare. Three years ago they were the kings of Twenty20 but now have some serious thinking to do about the shortest format. For the second tournament in succession they have been dumped without a win in the Super Eights and defeat never goes down well back home. And this from a side in which every member played at the IPL. Ideal preparation? Obviously not. This exit may not create the seismic activity that followed the early flight home in the 2007 World Cup, but it is bound to produce plenty of harsh assessment. The inquisitions had started even before this match, with India only having an outside chance of progressing. That faint hope disappeared once Sri Lanka reached 144 in their run-chase and a demoralised side then gave up the match off the last ball. Four sixes in the final eight deliveries carried Sri Lanka to an impressive success and their all-round performance was the complete opposite of what India have been able to produce.MS Dhoni managed a few smiles in his press conference as he was grilled in expected fashion. Partly that was due to an interruption from the PA announcer about an illegally parked car, but also when he was asked about how this would go down in India. He knows what it will be like. He’s been here before and it won’t be pleasant.”As captain you are always under pressure,” he said. “I think it’s the responsibility of the captain to explain why the team didn’t do well because he’s the face of the team. He gets the credit when he goes well and he also gets the criticism. It shouldn’t reach into your private life but we are leading a country where cricket is a big sport and each time we go out we are expected to win.”But it was the downbeat nature of his assessment of what the team could have done about the situation which was most clear and surprising. “At the end of the day we are on the losing side, nothing much can be done about it because this is the best 15 [players] you can get in India when it comes to T20. At the end of the day if you are outplayed there is nothing much you can do about it.”In hindsight the signs weren’t good to start with. They were the last side to arrive and didn’t opt for a practice match before their opening game. Dhoni suggested it was the last thing his team needed after a 90-minute coach ride from the international airport in St Lucia to the north of the island. They have also chosen days off rather than practice during the event but Dhoni said “one more practice session wouldn’t have made a difference”.They were lucky with the schedule in the group stage as their opening game was against Afghanistan who, for all the romanticism it possibility entailed, were never seriously going to challenge India. That gave them breathing space and the victory against South Africa, led by Suresh Raina’s 101, was a slick display which boded well. In reality they peaked too soon. They couldn’t handle the pace and bounce of the Barbados pitch and Dhoni has admitted some of the batsmen aren’t up to the challenge due to the nature of conditions they are brought up on. There aren’t many bouncy tracks at the IPL. When they were back in St Lucia they were right at home on the front foot and Raina was back in the runs. Nothing was bouncing above knee height. Dhoni admitted that India’s inability to cope with the bouncer was systemic.”Most of us have the problem of playing short-pitched balls. So it is not just the youngsters who had problems. We can’t neglect it any more. But we don’t have bowlers who consistently at 145-50 kph and most of wickets in India don’t have that kind of bounce,” he said.”But we should also remember we are good players of spin. So we shouldn’t be ashamed that we can’t play short-pitched bowling. We have to play even against short balls but we can’t be ducking and leaving all the time in Twenty20,” Dhoni said.Win or lose, the role of the IPL was bound to be at the forefront of India’s performance. Dhoni has said it’s unfair to compare the two, but if anything this World Twenty20 has just gone to reinforce that the quality is actually spread pretty thinly in that tournament. It’s a domestic event, albeit a big and brash one. Dhoni also made a subtle suggestion that players needed to take responsibility for themselves.”I’ve had no setbacks because of the IPL but at the same time players need to be smart because IPL is not only about cricket,” he said. “You have to respect your body and if you don’t do that then IPL is draining. If you play late games and go to the parties and travel the next day it takes a toll. But if you take care of yourself 45 days of cricket shouldn’t affect you because we play 200 or more in a year.”It’s a question of priorities for this India team and maybe international Twenty20 is now down the list. Now that they are top of the tree in Test cricket the BCCI is trying to arrange Test series left, right and centre so they can retain the mantle. South Africa’s tour earlier this year was adjusted to include two Tests and Australia are now being asked for the same when they visit in October. If the BCCI really do want to help the future of Test cricket then it’s a great move, but it is clearly more than coincidence.India next’s assignment is a triangular series in Zimbabwe alongside the hosts and Sri Lanka with what, in effect, is a shadow side. Senior players, including Dhoni, are being rested, which suggests he is more tired than he has admitted. However, for Dhoni there is a huge challenge on the horizon over the next nine months – preparing his team for a World Cup on home soil. Failure here will be hard to stomach for the billions of fans, but failure next year won’t be tolerated.

Southampton linked with Gareth Bale move

With Southampton now under new ownership after Sport Republic, backed by Serbian media mogul Dragan Solak, bought Gao Jisheng’s 80% stake of the club earlier this week, it hasn’t taken long for transfer rumours to emerge, this time linking the Saints with a very familiar face.

According to a recent report from El Nacional, Solak has identified Real Madrid star and former Saints player Gareth Bale as his first acquisition in charge of the south coast club.

Having started off his career at Southampton, Bale has gone on to make 536 senior appearances for the Saints, Tottenham and Real Madrid, scoring 183 goals, providing 140 assists and winning a plethora of trophies along the way, including four Champions League titles.

Despite being 32 years of age, the Welshman showed last season that he still has what it takes to perform at a high level in the Premier League by racking up 11 goals and two assists in 20 top-flight appearances during his loan spell at Tottenham. He also ended up as their second-highest rated player for the campaign, with an overall performance rating of 7.3/10 according to WhoScored.

Having been described as having a “magnificent” left foot by Sky Sports pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, Bale’s potential return to St Mary’s this month would surely stun a lot of Southampton fans. It would be a real statement of intent by Solak and highlight his aspirations for the club moving forward, considering Bale’s pedigree and experience.

However, given the Welshman’s previous struggles with injuries, which have also kept him sidelined for most of this season at the Bernabeu, this will need to be taken into consideration if Southampton decide to make a move for the winger this month.

If the Saints can manage to secure a deal for Bale, who is currently valued at £4.5m by Transfermarkt, and if he can overcome his injury woes, it will be interesting to see if he would be able to replicate the goalscoring form he showed at Spurs last season this time around for Ralph Hasenhuttl.

If this were to happen, he would surely give Southampton a great chance of potentially ending the season in or around the top half of the Premier League table, duly delighting a lot of Saints fans in the process.

A pedida salarial agradou a diretoria, e agora a negociação depende do aval do técnico Zé Ricardo.
