Fico feliz se sempre poder ajudar o Atlético-GO.

Joubert steps down as Titans captain

The Titans have announced that Pierre Joubert will step down as captain with effect from March 31

Cricinfo staff29-Mar-2010The Titans have announced that Pierre Joubert will step down as captain with effect from March 31. Joubert, who made his first-class debut for Northerns in 1995-96 as a 17-year-old, has led the team since 2008, securing four trophies during his three-season captaincy.”I wish to thank the players and Titans management for their support and commitment during the last three years,” said Joubert, who will continue to be available for the Titans. “It was an honour for me to captain arguably the best franchise in the country. I wish the new captain all the best, and as a Titans player and supporter, I will be backing him 100 per cent.”The Titans’ dramatic victory over the Eagles in the penultimate SuperSport Series game of the season was Joubert’s last match in charge of the team. He picked up 4 for 24 to spark a dramatic collapse in the Eagles’ second innings as Titans scraped to a two-wicket win despite Rilee Rossouw’s record-breaking 319 on the first day. The result enabled Titans to fill the runners-up spot on the final log behind the Cape Cobras.”Pierre has been a committed servant to the Nashua Titans and the game of cricket,” said Vincent Sinovich, chairman of the Easterns Titans board and president of Northerns Cricket. “He was part of the representative sides from Under 13 and captained the Provincial Amateur team for two years before he was appointed captain of the franchise.”Joubert captained the side to victory in both the MTN Domestic Championship and Standard Bank Pro20 Series in 2007-08. The Titans retained the domestic championship title in 2008-09, and also finished at the top of the SuperSport Series log in that season.”Above all these achievements, he is a true gentleman of the game,” added Sinovich. “The respect he has earned from players, administrators and spectators will long be remembered by all who know him. Pierre, on behalf of the Northerns Executive and Easterns Titans Franchise Board of Directors, sincere thanks for all you have done for the franchise and Northerns Cricket.”

Journalist makes fresh Ruben Neves claim

Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves could still potentially join Manchester United in the January transfer window, according to journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Neves linked with United move

The 24-year-old has enjoyed an excellent season for Wanderers, appearing in 18 Premier League matches and excelling in Monday’s famous 1-0 win away to United – Neves registered three shots, seven long balls and an 81 per cent pass success rate, bossing the match in the middle of the park (Whoscored).

He has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, however, with Ralf Rangnick seemingly eyeing a dynamic midfielder who can improve matters in the middle of the park – Wolves aren’t the first side to make the current crop look ordinary.

While some reports have suggested the Red Devils do not intend to make new additions until the summer, a new update may leave Wolves fans slightly concerned.

The Latest: Journalist makes fresh claim

Speaking to Give Me Sport, O’Rourke didn’t rule out the transfer happening this month, even though he also confirmed it will likely be a quiet January in Manchester:

“United are still interested in signing him. There are no concrete plans to make additions at United this month, but they are in open dialogue in case he could be brought in to boost their season.”

The Verdict: Hugely unlikely

The hope is that Neves is a Wolves player for many years to come, although Wanderers supporters have to be level-headed about him eventually joining a top club playing consistently in the Champions League.

That being said, it would be a big surprise if the Portugal international wanted to join United as early as January, especially with the Red Devils clearly struggling at the moment, as highlighted by Wolves’ aforementioned triumph earlier this week.

It appears to be an unhappy environment under Rangnick, whereas Bruno Lage is excelling at Molineux and Neves is on top form, hopefully inspiring them to a European finish in May – does he really have a better chance of that at Old Trafford right now?

Massive total puts New Zealand on top

A terrific 339-run sixth-wicket stand between Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum put the hosts firmly in the driver’s seat on the second day of the one-off Test at Seddon Park

A terrific 339-run sixth-wicket stand between Martin Guptilland Brendon McCullum put the hosts firmly in the driver’s seat on the second day of the one-off Test at Seddon Park. Both batsmen came agonisingly close to maiden double-centuries, before falling to an inspired Rubel Hossain spell soon after drinks in the second session, and New Zealand later declared with a massive total. Bangladesh started their innings in smashing form, with Tamim Iqbal looking comfortable against the New Zealand bowlers, but the visitors still face a mountain to climb.Guptill and McCullum had batted faultlessly until that point, scoring heavily on both sides of the pitch in the first session by making full use of a surface that had significantly improved for batting from day one. The Bangladesh attack was unimaginative in the morning, continually bowling short with men back on the square boundary, even as the New Zealand batsmen picked the gaps between them with deft precision. Guptill exploited the short pitched bowling well, repeatedly flaying errant deliveries to the backward point fence, and brought up his maiden Test century from 188 balls early in the day. McCullum too, was especially brutal on the pull, heaving Shafiul Islam over the square leg boundary to bring up his fourth Test ton and his second against Bangladesh. The batsmen continued to make merry in the morning, preying on lacklustre bowling and wearing down the opposition fielders with some slippery running between the wickets. McCullum was the first to reach 150, with Guptill following suit just before the break, after a spate of boundaries off the Bangladesh pacemen towards the end of the session.Shakib Al Hasan’s ploy to relax his aggressive field placings after lunch made for a more sedate start to the second session, in which a revitalised Bangladesh did well to dry up the boundaries for ninety-five consecutive deliveries. Guptill and McCullum had little trouble negotiating the second day pitch however, picking up the singles on offer and converting the ones into expertly judged, lightning speed twos.A renewed Rubel, in his first spell of the afternoon, was to be their eventual demise, dismissing McCullum first with a fuller delivery before inducing a top edge from Guptill a few overs later to pick up his maiden five-wicket haul in Tests. By the time the mammoth partnership ended, the duo had broken the record for highest sixth-wicket partnership for New Zealand, missing out on the world record by 12 runs, while McCullum’s 185 was the highest by a New Zealand wicketkeeper. Daryl Tuffey and Jeetan Patel then came out playing shots and boosted the hosts total to an utterly dominant 553 for 7 until the declaration came on the stroke of tea.Tamim and Imrul Kayes began at a breakneck pace for Bangladesh in the evening session before Daniel Vettori brought himself into the attack to cut the opening stand short, at 79. Tamim in particular took the New Zealand pacemen to task, bringing up his fourth Test half-century in just 39 deliveries. He ended the day unbeaten on 56 when bad light stopped play, in an innings that featured 10 boundaries, leaving Bangladesh on 87 for 1. The tourists require their top order to cash in on a surface getting better for batting on the third day, in order to avoid a massive first innings deficit.

West Ham interested in James Tarkowski

West Ham remain “focused” on recruiting a new centre-back in the January transfer window, with Burnley’s James Tarkowski among the names being discussed…

What’s the story?

The Hammers have seen a number of injuries hit their central defenders over the course of this Premier League season, so it’s been no surprise to hear that David Moyes has got his sights set on strengthening that area of the pitch.

Now, transfer insider Dean Jones has delivered an update on where things currently stand.

He said: “Everything I’m told about West Ham remains focused around the centre-back options that we’ve heard before. There’s Tarkowski, who will obviously be really hard to get out of Burnley, and Nat Phillips.”

Premier League proven

The 6 foot 1 colossus has made 175 appearances in the Premier League alone since joining the Clarets in February 2016, and has earned some rave reviews for his performances,

Danny Murphy once hailed him as a “super player” after an impressive performance in a victory over Everton, while Tony Philliskirk, former Head of Academy at Oldham, once told The Athletic: “He became the main man on defensive and attacking set pieces, that as a player makes you think you are an integral part of the team.

“He became that because of his level of performance. He was humble and never got ahead of himself. His confidence increased and he became a leader which we discussed with him, organising those in front of him.”

Also described as “exceptional” by his peers, the £50k-a-week earning Tarkowski is the kind of proven Premier League option that would surely be able to hit the ground running at the London Stadium were the Hammers to make a move in these final couple of weeks of the transfer window.

With Moyes’ side well in the hunt for a Champions League spot, ensuring that any new signing can acclimatise quickly and help them in that push will be crucial, and Tarkowski’s years of experience in the top-flight would make him a very shrewd acquisition.

Given the injuries they’ve had at the heart of defence this season – not least to the likes of Angelo Ogbonna and Kurt Zouma – and the fact they’ve got the Europa League knockout stages and FA Cup latter rounds to come too, it’ll be a very busy end to the season.

It’s exactly why Moyes badly needs someone like Tarkowski.

Meanwhile, West Ham are monitoring this Ligue 1 star…

Lai still wants to sell West Brom

West Bromwich Albion have been had a number of concerns to attend to over the last week with a virus outbreak in the camp, and now an unexpected guest has made an appearance at The Hawthorns.

What’s the word?

West Brom journalist, Joseph Masi, dropped a bombshell yesterday afternoon on Twitter after revealing that the club’s controlling shareholder, Lai Guochuan, has made his first visit to the club for three years.

Masi put out a string of tweets, letting fans know what was happening;

“It is understood this is the first step towards Lai reintegrating himself back into the club. He had positive talks today with Ismael about the future and the upcoming January transfer window… #wba”

He then added;

“It’s believed Lai still wants to sell Albion. But he accepts a sale is unlikely in the foreseeable future. Therefore he wants to give his investment some TLC to help them back to the Premier League… #wba”

The 47-year-old businessman, who bought the club in 2016 for £200m, has gone to extreme lengths to make this visit, spending ten days in quarantine after flying to England, and when he does make the flight home to Guangzhou he will undergo a strict 28-day quarantine process, so the visit was clearly monumental for Lai.

Fans elated

Fans of West Bromwich Albion have always been vocal about their disappointment and anger towards Lai and his handling of the club, with many of them responding to Masi’s tweets about the visit to express their opinion;

One fan tweeted in response to Masi; “C’mon Joe this is absolute garbage… he’s doing all these fake meet & greets to smoke screen fans into believing he cares about our club. Attendances & interest is down currently. He’s a desperate man.”

Another fumed; “We want him gone too, to be honest. To sell we need to be in Premier League but he’s hoping we can go up without spending anything. Not happening. Cough up.”

Evidently, Baggies fans will be elated if Lai does eventually sell up so this update from Masi should provide them with some encouragement.

Supporters will definitely be expecting Lai to put his hands in his wallet this January as a lack of proper investment has, as a result, seen the club yo-yo-ing between the Championship and Premier League, with the side finding themselves unable to establish themselves in the top flight, facing constant relegation battles.

As a result, it’s clear to see that his time in the Midlands has not really been a success.

It will be intriguing to see what Lai’s next moves are for the club and whether he has a genuine interest in fixing the issues that West Brom currently face in a tight battle for automatic promotion.

The shareholder can make a real positive impact by signing players in January to help with goal-scoring, where the side is lacking compared to their two title rivals, Fulham and Bournemouth, and managing this problem could substantially increase the chances of promotion for the Baggies.

If he doesn’t do that, the discontent towards Lai will only grow deeper while the thought of him finally taking his leave will leave fans beaming with excitement.

Phil Hay makes Charlie Cresswell claim

Leeds United youngster Charlie Cresswell was set to face Arsenal on Saturday before a shoulder injury ruled him out of the match, according to journalist Phil Hay.

The Lowdown: Leeds thrashed by Arsenal

The Whites suffered another dispiriting Premier League outing on Saturday, losing 4-1 to the Gunners at Elland Road. Marcelo Bielsa is having to tackle an injury crisis and it is showing on the pitch, with Leeds now sitting a worrying 16th in the table.

A relegation battle looks increasingly on the cards and a huge amount of resolve will need to be shown in the coming weeks, with signings required in the January transfer window.

The Latest: Cresswell suffers injury

Writing in a Q&A for The Athletic after the Arsenal game, Hay confirmed that youngster Cresswell was set to start before he picked up an injury of his own.

The journalist stated: “Cresswell was injured in training – shoulder problem. Was due to start today.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-news-28/” title=”Latest Leeds United news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: More minutes coming his way?

Considering Leeds’ current injury woes, it may be that Cresswell soon gets another chance to shine, assuming he recovers from his shoulder issue.

The 19-year-old has already made four Premier League appearances this season (starting once) and he has shown he can compete at this level, earning a 7.93 rating from WhoScored in the Carabao Cup penalty shootout win over Fulham back in September.

Granted, it would be better not having to throw a teenage centre-back into the team, but it could end up proving to be invaluable experience further down the line. Indeed, going by how poorly Leeds defended against the Gunners, it’s not outlandish to suggest that Bielsa could have done with the teenager on Saturday.

In other news, three Leeds players struggled in the defeat to Arsenal. Find out who they are.

ANZ cleared for international cricket

Other decisions taken by the ICC

  • ICC will conduct “urgent product research and analysis” into providing greater context to Test, ODI and Twenty20 cricket, including a look at day/night Tests

  • Ian Bishop and Mark Taylor reappointed to the Cricket Committee as media representatives, Kumar Sangakkara and Tim May as current player representatives; Gary Kirsten takes over from Mickey Arthur as national coaches’ representative

  • A meeting with broadcasters in March will aim to refine the UDRS, which, it was reported, had seen 97.44% correct decisions (up from 91.3%) in 13 Tests

  • ICC Security Task Force’s recommendations – in the wake of the Lahore attack – unanimously accepted by the board. Recommendations include full-time security manager for each member

  • Relocation to Lord’s was discussed but ICC will continue due diligence before reaching any decisions

The ANZ Stadium in Sydney, the main venue of the 2000 Olympics, could play host to one of England’s fixtures on their Ashes tour later this year, after the ICC Board gave the green light for international cricket to take place at the ground. The decision was confirmed in a press release on Thursday morning, following a recommendation from the ICC Chief Executives’ Committee, and it redraws the battlelines between Cricket NSW, who have staged domestic 20- and 50-over matches at the ANZ for several seasons, and the SCG Trust, who are determined to keep their historic ground as Sydney’s foremost venue. The current tenancy agreement, which was signed in 2004, expires at the end of 2010, leading to the outside possibility that the ANZ, with its 80,000 capacity, could seek to poach the traditional New Year Test from the SCG. Although the more likely scenario is the awarding of one of the seven ODIs that follow the Test series, Dave Gilbert, the Cricket NSW chief executive, told Cricinfo back in November that they would be keeping all options open.”ANZ is focused on getting a major cricket match to its venue,” Gilbert said. “I know Test cricket will be a difficult one to do at this stage – and you have to weigh up tradition and history and the drama at the SCG – but when I was a kid growing up at the SCG, rugby league Test matches and union Test matches were only ever at the SCG. Not anymore.”If you’re a 15-year-old kid, you’ve only ever known big sport events to be played at ANZ Stadium – that’s not meant to be an inflammatory comment, it’s a fact. If you take the heat and emotion out of it, as CEO of Cricket NSW, I have to do what is best for cricket to generate revenue to keep this game going, and this is what this process is about.A spokesman for ANZ Stadium said the venue’s primary focus was to attract ODI and Twenty20 international cricket, but would not rule out a bid to poach Test matches from the SCG.
