PCB to lodge complaint with ICC

The PCB has decided to appeal to the ICC regarding the decision of IPL franchises not to pick a single Pakistani player of the 11 on the auction list

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to appeal to the ICC regarding the exclusion of all 11 Pakistani players from the IPL after the auction in Mumbai this week. Since the IPL is a domestic tournament, it is outside the ICC’s purview and so it is unlikely cricket’s ruling body will be able to do much about it, but the matter continues to rage on in Pakistan.”We will be lodging a complaint with the ICC and I will personally table this issue at the next meeting of the ICC executive board on February 10,” said Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, after a meeting with the country’s sports minister in Lahore. “The IPL may be a private and commercial enterprise but this issue involves the pride of a nation and we are going to pursue it with the ICC.”Pakistan’s players have reacted with anger and attributed the blackout to politics and Butt had already expressed his disappointment. Echoing these views, Pakistan sports minister Ijaz Jhakrani has now termed the exclusion of Pakistan players “a serious issue.””How can they [IPL franchises] avoid bidding for players from the world champion team?” he said after meeting the PCB chairman. “It’s our unanimous decision to take up this issue at the highest forum and lodge our protest at the ICC.” As a sign of protest against the snub to Pakistan’s cricketers, the speaker of the lower house had also stopped a parliamentary delegation from traveling to India. The Indian government was quick to distance itself from the results of the IPL auction, while N Srinivasan, the BCCI secretary and owner of the Chennai Super Kings franchise, has said has said the Indian board and government had nothing to do with the player selections.Butt, however, said these were excuses without substance. “They should tell us if franchises had reservations about signing Pakistani players because they were worried about security issues and availability of the players why were our players included in the auction in the first place,” he said. “If IPL franchise have so many issues with signing our players then why did the IPL first approach us to send them government clearances for the players.”

Villa’s Douglas Luiz impressed v Liverpool

Steven Gerrard has enjoyed his start to life as a Premier League manager after swapping Rangers for Aston Villa last month, with his side winning three of their first four league games under the 41-year-old.

Game number five was a return to Anfield for the former Liverpool captain, for whom the Villa boss made more than 700 appearances as a player.

Despite a resolute performance from the Midlands outfit, the Villans lost out to Jurgen Klopp’s side as Mo Salah’s 67th-minute penalty proved the difference on Saturday. Defensively the visitors looked solid, but one player in particular who stood out was Douglas Luiz.

The 23-year-old was a real presence in the middle of the park for the visitors, completing 84% of his passes as well as having 65 touches. Furthermore, the Brazilian had a 100% long ball accuracy and also completed all of his attempted dribbles whilst winning 75% of his duels.

According to SofaScore, Luiz’s fellow midfielder John McGinn struggled to replicate similar numbers to his teammate. The Scotsman had a 72% passing accuracy whilst also having fewer touches (56).

Moreover, McGinn lost possession 19 times compared to Luiz’s 11, meaning that the 27-year-old lost the ball every 2.9 touches as opposed to every 5.9 touches for the Brazilian.

The Scotsman has been one of Gerrard’s standout performers since the 41-year-old took charge of Villa last month, averaging a performance rating of 7.95 prior to the Liverpool contest, according to SofaScore. However, the midfielder could only manage a 6.3/10 rating against the Reds, making it his worst performance under the new manager by some margin.

As for Luiz, it’s certainly promising to see the Brazilian getting a run of matches under Gerrard after endured a mixed start to the season, missing games against West Ham, Southampton and Brighton.

Alongside McGinn and Marvelous Nakamba, it appears that the 23-year-old is part of the Villa manager’s preferred midfield trio, with that particular combination now starting the last three games. Today’s performance suggests that Luiz is making the most of the chances being handed to him by Gerrard.

Jesse Ryder faces extended lay-off

Jesse Ryder, the New Zealand batsman, will not be considered for selection for the home series against Bangladesh as he continues to struggle with a lower stomach muscle injury. Ryder had a recurrence of the injury while training, and there are serious doubts over his availability for New Zealand’s home series against Australia as well as the ICC World Twenty20 in May.”Unfortunately Jesse is not fit at the moment,” the national selector Mark Greatbatch said. “He has had a bit of a relapse with his injury. He has still got quite a bit of work to do to get back and play club cricket and for Wellington.”Ryder recently took a significant step in his recovery from an injury that has troubled him since the Indian Premier League in March 2009, appearing for Wellington A in a practice game against the England Under-19 team. He has been sidelined since suffering an abductor strain that he aggravated during the Champions Trophy in South Africa.New Zealand team physiotherapist Kate Stalker met Ryder in Christchurch, along with other New Zealand Cricket medical staff. “He has some abdominal pain again. He hasn’t reinjured it to the same extent he had in the past, but he’s certainly tweaked it,” she told the . “Biomechanical faults take a long time to sort out. It’s not an overnight fix.”Stalker’s comments indicate that Ryder could easily be out of action for the next few months, but as she put it, there was a much bigger picture looming ahead in 13 months. “Is it more important to have him playing against Bangladesh or playing in the World Cup? … my goal is the World Cup,” she said.”Anything else we can have players ready for, like the world Twenty20, that’s fantastic, but our focus is the World Cup and I want the New Zealand selectors to be able to choose from every player we have to make that squad. It’s really important for its longevity that we sort this out now”.New Zealand host Bangladesh for a Twenty20, three ODIs and a one-off Test in Hamilton during February.

Harrison has let Leeds down this season

After finishing their first season back in the Premier League after a 16-year absence in ninth place, Leeds United were active in the previous summer transfer window by signing the likes of Dan James, Junior Firpo and Kristoffer Klaesson to help boost their squad.

One other business deal the Yorkshire club managed to secure was the permanent signing of winger Jack Harrison from Manchester City after originally joining Leeds on a loan deal back in 2018.

With a total of 143 appearances, 20 goals and 22 assists under his belt for Leeds across all competitions, Harrison has not shown this season why Leeds were right to sign him on a permanent basis with no goals and just one assist provided in 13 league appearances.

Given how Harrison managed to end last season with eight goals and eight assists in the Premier League, these are the numbers that he will undoubtedly be aiming to reach or even improve on this time around.

Harrison has also only managed to successfully complete 43% of his dribbles in the league this season as well as winning just 33% of his duels, showing how ineffective he has been on and off the ball.

As well as this and his lack of goal contributions in the Premier League this season, the 25-year-old’s overall performances have also been underwhelming with Harrison racking up a season rating of 6.48/10 from SofaScore, lower than Leeds’ other summer signings James (6.73/10) and Firpo (6.61/10).

With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise that Leeds journalist Phil Hay said he’s “wildly out of form” when speaking last month.

Taking this into account, it seems as though that Victor Orta and the Yorkshire club may have dropped a clanger in signing Harrison, who is currently earning a weekly wage of £60k-per-week according to Salary Sport, based on his performances so far this season.

However, the Englishman still has enough time in the campaign to turn his form around and prove to everyone connected to the club that they made the right decision to offer him a permanent deal in the summer.

With Leeds’ next game in the league putting them up against Harrison’s former side on Tuesday evening, this could be a perfect opportunity for the winger to really kickstart his season with Leeds, especially if he can grab his first league goal of the season and potentially secure a much-needed positive result for Bielsa’s side.

Manchester United: Fans react to Joao Felix contact

Manchester United have made contact over a possible move for Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix.

That’s according to Spanish newspaper AS, relayed by Sports Witness, and, as to be expected, the update has had a number of United fans talking on social media.

The 22-year-old is valued at £63m by Transfermarkt and is extremely versatile, capable of playing anywhere in attack. He’s scored 20 times in 88 appearances for Madrid after joining back in 2019 from Benfica in a deal worth £114m.

It now seems as if the Portugal international is on the club’s radar, with Sports Witness relaying claims suggesting United have ‘already asked for’ the forward.

Fellow Premier League sides Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle United are also name-checked with an interest, with Felix’s contract not up until 2026.

A move away from Atletico may materialise, though, with the report revealing Felix’s representatives are now ‘studying various alternatives to try to convince’ Atletico to let the forward depart.

United fans react

Well-known page @utdreport shared the claims regarding Felix on Twitter on Thursday. These United fans were all buzzing at the news, with one labelling it as ‘serious’.

Luis Diaz: Spurs need to break club-record

Tottenham Hotspur are among the teams to have made a bid to sign Porto winger Luis Diaz, according to reports.

Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness) claim that Spurs submitted a €60m (£50m) offer for the 24-year-old winger but it was refused, with the Primeira Liga outfit wanting a fee closer to his €80m (£66m) release clause.

Premier League rivals Liverpool and Newcastle United have also been heavily mooted with interest in recent weeks, too.

The 31-cap Colombia international has been in electric form this campaign – as per Transfermarkt, the versatile attacker has provided 15 goals and five assists across the Portugal top-flight and Champions League, adding to his 11 goals and six assists in all competitions last season.

His form has earned substantial recognition from those around him.

Only two months ago, Portuguese journalist Marino Peixoto wrote on Twitter:

“The rate at which Luís Diaz is churning out otherworldly performances coupled with his ability to score screamers like this on a consistent basis is genuinely frightening. Only a matter of time before somebody pays an astronomical fee for him.”

Whilst Dragons teammate Sergio Oliveira described the £36m-rated dynamo as “extraordinary” after a particularly glowing display against Italian giants AC Milan.

“I don’t have to answer, we know his qualities, apart from the human level he is also extraordinary on a technical level,” he said (via the Daily Mail).

Given manager Antonio Conte’s desperate plea to bolster his playing squad this month, Diaz is evidently a player capable of adding some much-needed quality in the final third.

“For sure (we need to strengthen),” the 52-year-old told reporters. “After only two weeks I said we needed to improve the quality of this squad.”

He has proven on both a domestic and European level that he can regularly score and set up chances, as evident by his figures and subsequent praise above.

Spurs may well need to break their £55m club-record fee to land him but you’d imagine he would be worth every penny, even more so under the Italian manager.

Lilywhites sporting director Fabio Paratici must do all he can to secure the Colombian maestro this window.

LUFC linked with Ross Barkley transfer

With only four wins under their belt in the Premier League so far this season with seven draws and eight defeats, the January transfer window could provide Leeds United with the perfect opportunity to make some changes to their squad so they can turn their fortunes around and have a strong second half of the season.

One player that Leeds could turn to that would improve the team is Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley, who the Yorkshire club have been linked with a move for in recent weeks.

With just five appearances and one start in the Premier League so far this season, it’s safe to say that Barkley is not seen as an important player for Chelsea and shows why he has been touted with a move away from Stamford Bridge this month.

Even though he hasn’t managed to score or provide an assist in the 11 total appearances he’s made across all competitions so far this term, the attacking midfielder has shown in the past that he is capable of delivering when given a consistent run of games.

For example, in his first five starts for Aston Villa during his loan spell there last season, the 28-year-old managed to score two goals and provide one assist before a hamstring injury knocked him off course.

Labelled as a “first-class” player by former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard, Barkley could feasibly get his campaign back on track by making the move to Elland Road this month by getting some regular minutes under his belt in the process.

If Leeds are able to sign him in January either on a loan or permanent deal, this could give Bielsa the chance to get rid of Rodrigo given how the 30-year-old has not only managed to score just nine goals in 43 appearances for the Whites since his arrival. Considering he’s the club’s highest earner with a weekly wage of £100k-per-week and rather injury-prone, he hasn’t set the world alight.

It’s evident the Argentine manager hasn’t taken to the Spain international too well, with Gabby Agbonlahor delivering the following assessment following a time where he was substituted on and off the pitch in the same game.

“But in the game against Chelsea, he got taken off when he was brought on as a sub. It’s a bit humiliating from the manager.

“Sometimes you can lose players when you do stuff like that. I’m sure he won’t want to do that again,” he told Football Insider.

Moving forward, Leeds should definitely try and secure a deal for Barkley this month to add another midfield or attacking option for Bielsa in his squad, which could be very useful throughout the remainder of the season if they keep losing players to injuries.

Sehwag and Tendulkar drive India ahead

The Sehwag storm struck South Africa with full force and pretty much blew everything in its way to a 13th 150-plus score

How they were out
HawkeyeVirender Sehwag brought up his 19th century in 87 balls•Getty ImagesThe Sehwag storm struck South Africa with full force and pretty much blew everything in its way to a 13th 150-plus score. Amid the mayhem, it was easy to forget the cool, pleasant breeze that was Sachin Tendulkar’s 92nd international century – his fourth in four Tests. They added 249 runs for the third wicket and kept South Africa wicketless for 57.4 overs but, once the two quietened, South Africa struck back with three quick wickets to retrieve some of the momentum in the match.Sehwag rattled them with a vicious assault on the new ball, put behind him the Gautam Gambhir run-out and, after a brief quiet, punished them some more. His 87-ball hundred would have been even faster but for a relative lull of 10 off 21 balls. Tendulkar enjoyed playing in the shadow of Sehwag’s strike-rate, kept scoring at an even pace and, unlike Sehwag, didn’t give South Africa a single chance. Two critical moments in the first session determined the flow of the game. Sehwag – 43 off 21 then – had the fastest Test fifty and a few other records in sight when he ran Gambhir out, and he chastised himself by playing disciplined cricket for a while. Around the same time Morne Morkel indulged in some reverse-rattling, took out M Vijay, troubled Sehwag with accurate bouncers and induced an edge only to see JP Duminy – at first slip because of the finger injury to Graeme Smith – drop him on 47. Sehwag could have gone at an even more frenetic rate but for the run-out. South Africa could have been in control had Sehwag fallen then.Sehwag’s onslaught started when Dale Steyn failed to get any swing. Somehow the ball didn’t come out right, the seam wobbled, and Nagpur was a distant memory. When there is no swing, Steyn’s pace is his biggest enemy so today the faster they came the faster they went. Nor did he get the Morkel’s bounce, which meant that when Steyn went for the ribs, Sehwag could easily flick it past midwicket. The storm started with that gentle little flick and then came three boundaries in three balls in the third over: placed over point, whipped to square leg, and slashed past point. Morkel got the treatment in his third over too: three boundaries through the off side, one off a delivery that clocked 152.6kmph. Wayne Parnell replaced Morkel immediately, and immediately he was carved for a four and a six into the rubble of a stand under reconstruction. The next ball Sehwag faced he hit an off-drive for four, and then came the run-out. It was time for drinks and Sehwag threw away his protective gear in disgust. That was when Morkel came back but his charged-up, accurate burst seemed to have ended with that dropped chance. When Sehwag came back from lunch, the cautious approach had been thrown out and he was blazing away again. For company he had Tendulkar. If you were a bowler, there was nowhere to hide.Sehwag showed that to Steyn early in his second spell. Punch, whip, steer, 10 runs off three deliveries. Steyn to Sehwag then: 11 balls, 25 runs, five boundaries. Tendulkar joined the fun, defending everything full but steering Steyn for two boundaries. Paul Harris, meanwhile, didn’t have the luxury of a big score, bowled round the stumps, and was slog-swept and hit inside out by Sehwag for a six and a four.Back came Morkel, the best bowler on the day, to be given the worst sort of treatment a best bowler can be given. This time Tendulkar took the lead. Two fullish deliveries, two clips to the on side, one to the left of square leg, one to the right. In his next over, he gave Sehwag width with three deep fielders on the off side. One to the left of deep point, and one to the right. Sehwag 89 off 72, Tendulkar 38 off 61. India were 165 for 2 in 30.2 overs, with the bonus of South Africa’s two best bowlers negated. In between the hard-hitting there was some toying, with paddles from outside off, reverse-sweeps, clips past midwicket as Sehwag reached his hundred and Tendulkar his fifty without further incident. Harris eventually started bowling over the wicket, and was called wide 12 times because, unlike in Nagpur, he was not looking to get wickets here. The runs slowed down post tea. When Sehwag was 128, AB de Villiers, the replacement keeper, missed an easy stumping. By the time Duminy made good his mistake, getting Sehwag in his first over, it might just have been too late. Not quite. Harris went round the wicket in the next over – inexplicably it took him until the Sehwag dismissal to do so – and got a false shot out of Tendulkar.Steyn came back right away, got his swing back, and beat S Badrinath in the man-versus-boy contest. VVS Laxman struggled to fight the momentum and edged Harris in the next over. It flew wide of slip, the light deteriorated and India ended the day retaining the upper hand despite that late South African surge.

Journalist drops Traore update at Wolves

As well as sitting in eighth place in the Premier League table and beating Manchester United 1-0 at Old Trafford in their previous match, Wolves have been rather busy in terms of transfer business this month by recalling Dion Sanderson and Ryan Giles from their loan deals, as well as signing midfielder Hayao Kawabe, showing that things are going quite well for Bruno Lage and his side at the moment.

However, one factor at Wolves that could be cause for concern at the moment is the current situation regarding winger Adama Traore.

With his contract set to expire in the summer of 2023, there have been previous reports suggesting that efforts from the Old Gold to get him to sign a new deal have been unsuccessful.

Now that recent transfer links have emerged suggesting that fellow Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for him, this has thrown his immediate future at Molineux into question.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, journalist Pete O’Rourke had this to say about Traore’s current situation at the Midlands club and what the future could hold for him, which some fans may not be happy to hear.

He said: “He’s refusing to sign a new deal at Wolves, so that might force them to sell Traore this summer.

“They might need that money to strengthen the squad elsewhere.”

Since joining the Midlands club back in the 2018 summer transfer window from Championship club Middlesbrough in a deal worth a reported fee of £18m, the Spaniard has gone on to make 151 appearances in a Wolves shirt across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing 18 assists along the way.

Now that O’Rourke has claimed that Traore has no intention of signing a new deal at Molineux, it could be worth them cashing in on him either in the current January window if Spurs are willing to offer a suitable fee for his services, or even in the next summer window if Lage doesn’t want to lose one of his attacking players midway through the season.

Either way, it’s not worth keeping hold of a player that doesn’t want to be at the club and making extra efforts to change his mind.
