Shane Watson is fast learning that friendly fire isn’t always so friendly. Having spent the majority of his career pursuing a Test berth, Watson now finds himself in the uncharted waters of incumbent status entering an Australian summer – and the internal challengers are circling. From the moment he was crowned Australia’s new Test opener at Edgbaston earlier this year, Watson expected the likes of Phillip Hughes, Phil Jaques and Chris Rogers to launch campaigns to usurp the throne. What he hadn’t counted on was the overwhelming push from his adopted state’s media to see him replaced with Hughes, his New South Wales team-mate, for the opening Test against West Indies, beginning at the Gabba on Thursday. With anonymity no longer his ally, Watson is coming to terms with life with a bullseye on his back. Half-centuries in each of his first three Test innings as opener might have afforded him a degree of breathing space but, cast as “the other man” in a regional love-affair with the swashbuckling Hughes, the prevailing mood is that Watson is a man pursued.”That was definitely interesting,” Watson said of the pro-Hughes campaign. “I didn’t score as many runs as I would’ve liked during the Ashes, but I was able to make a pretty good fist of it. There has been a lot of pressure there from the media pushing Phil Hughes, but in the end I’ve got the opportunity. I’ve just got to be performing anyway, whether it’s Phil Hughes or Phil Jaques or any other batsman in Australia pushing me. But this is certainly all a new experience for me.”Watson’s place at the top of the order is not only a matter of debate in the nation’s newspapers. Andrew Hilditch and Ricky Ponting have in the past week offered contrasting forecasts of his long-term place in the side – Hilditch extolling his opening credentials, Ponting viewing him in a more traditional allrounder’s role.”Down the track, we all think that with Shane’s style of play, he would be suited down in the middle order and being able to give us 15 to 20 overs as well,” Ponting said. ”That’s the cricketer I always thought he would be. He can bat pretty much anywhere in the order which is terrific for us, but the difficulty that presents is how many overs are you going to push to get out of him knowing that he’s going to have to bat at the start of the second innings?”Ponting’s point is a salient one. Over the past two years the world has witnessed the disastrous effects modern cricket scheduling has had on the game’s leading allrounders – Andrew Flintoff, Dwayne Bravo and Jacob Oram have all spent extended periods on the sidelines with injury – and Australia would be reckless to expose Watson to a similar fate.Watson, of course, is all too aware of the physical demands placed upon allrounders. Back, shoulder and hamstring problems were among the litany of injuries that prevented him from realising his potential for much of the past decade, but a revised training regime has given him confidence that the worst might be behind him.Speaking at the Allan Border Field in Brisbane this week, Watson had ample opportunity to reflect upon the myriad twists his career has taken in recent years. It was at that facility three years ago that he sustained the Ashes-ending hamstring injury that jeopardised his international career. It is at the same practice field he now prepares to entrench himself as a first-picked member of the Test side, having survived and thrived through one of the most demanding years in the history of Australian cricket”I wasn’t in a great place there for a while,” he said. “I thought I was going to have to give up being an allrounder. For me to play for Australia, I thought it was going to take me a lot longer to get where I wanted to go. Being an allrounder gave me an opportunity to narrow the number of people you’re up against. I wasn’t really thinking about quitting cricket, because I knew I had my batting, but deep down I knew the things I could achieve as an allrounder.”I’ll have to be clever about how I go about things, there’s no doubt. Being an allrounder and seeing the unfortunate thing that’s happened to Freddie and other allrounders around the world, it just rams home the importance of getting my body just right. For me to be able to get through the last six months of cricket and to feel really good and fresh after it, it’s been very rewarding to know the things I’ve done especially over the last two years are paying big dividends. It puts my mind at ease because at a certain stage I was doubting whether I was ever going to get an opportunity to see how good I could be on the international stage.”And, so, to the next phase of his career. Having secured his place in the Test XI, Watson is now refining his technique to withstand the challenges posed by the game’s elite new-ball bowlers. His successes in England were tempered by a tendency to lose his wicket shortly after breaks in play – either trapped on the crease or playing around his front pad – and Watson is working to sharpen his footwork before his duels with Jerome Taylor, Dwayne Bravo and co.”It is such a big challenge opening the batting and just playing a lot of cricket back to back,” he said. “It definitely has been a work in progress to work on certain aspects of my game. Some have come along quicker than I expected, but a few other little things creep in like the mental side of switching on and switching off every ball and not coming back from a break and getting out. That’s the continual challenge and the thing I love about cricket. I feel that’s a step along the way to making me a better player.”

Predicted Wolves starting XI v Norwich

After securing a 1-0 win over West Ham United last weekend, Wolves are back in action today with an away clash against Norwich City.

Speaking ahead of the match in his latest press conference, Wolves manager Bruno Lage revealed that the club have been dealt some negative injury news as Willy Boly will be absent today after suffering a muscular injury.

With this in mind, here’s how we feel Wolves could line up to take on the Canaries this afternoon, with two changes from last Saturday.

In goal, considering that he’s played in all of their league games so far this season, it seems likely that Lage will stick with Jose Sa to see if he can keep another clean sheet this time out.

For the back three, we can see the 45-year-old sticking with the same trio which managed to keep a clean sheet against West Ham, with Max Kilman and Romain Saiss on either side of Conor Coady.

Then for the wing-back positions, we think Nelson Semedo and Rayan Ait Nouri will keep their places in the team, with the same pairing of Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho in central midfield.

Although we reckon Raul Jimenez will keep his place in the side to see if he can add to his goal tally for the season after scoring the winner against David Moyes’ Irons last weekend, we think Lage will make a couple of attacking changes to freshen up his team slightly.

The first of those sees Adama Traore come back in on the left wing instead of Hwang Hee-chan, who didn’t have a shot at goal against West Ham. Also, Francisco Trincao comes in for Daniel Podence, who is currently earning a wage of £60k-per-week according to Spotrac, to see if he can help Jimenez in the attack. Despite Podence setting up the winner seven days ago, Trincao has had a higher WhoScored rating overall for the season and could be restored today.

With Norwich having struggled in the league so far this season, this is a great opportunity for Wolves to secure another win and push themselves higher up the table.

Wenham makes Spurs stadium claim

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’/club source John Wenham, who consistently breaks club news on his Lilywhites Rose channels, has made a stadium naming rights claim.

The Lowdown: Spurs in lucrative hunt…

Since the club finally moved to their brand new, state of the art £850 million ground in 2019 – much has been made on chairman Daniel Levy’s hunt for a lucrative naming rights deal.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments-2/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, reports have suggested that the club have been holding out for a £25 million-per-year agreement as club chiefs lead by Levy personally hold talks with blue chip companies (Football Insider).

Big brands like Amazon and Nike were linked with a deal in 2020 but Spurs have still yet to find a buyer nearly two years after they set the reported £25m price tag (The Telegraph).

Tottenham even appointed chief commercial offer Todd Kline earlier this year in a bid to accelerate progress, a former NFL executive credited with helping to a secure a £180m stadium naming rights deal for the Miami Dolphins (The Evening Standard).

The Latest: Wenham makes naming rights claim…

Speaking to FI, sharing what he knows on the situation, club ‘insider’/source has made a claim in backing of Levy’s eagerness to tie up a deal – going to say Spurs are still working on it ‘in the background’.

“We are still waiting on the stadium naming rights deal,” he explained.

“That’s massive. We are holding out for a super-deal of something like £20million over 20 years.

“There is £400million straight away. Let’s just keep an eye on that one.

“I know the stadium naming rights thing is going on in the background.

“The club could accept a deal tomorrow, they want this massive deal.

“When it gets sorted and is announced, it will be significant. We have been waiting on it for years.”

The Verdict: Big priority…

As Spurs announce pre-tax losses of £80.2m for the last financial year ending June 2021, taking their overall club debt to a seismic £706m in total (The Guardian), the club’s hunt for a lucrative sponsorship contract could not be more imperative.

Reports have suggested in recent months that finding a buyer and putting Tottenham’s near 24-month long quest for an agreement is the board’s ‘priority’ off-field as they seek to address a big financial issue.

This could feasibly translate to the field as new manager Antonio Conte aims to strengthen in the transfer market and reshape the side in his own image.

The Italian will need backing to do so and a Spurs stadium naming rights deal could certainly alleviate financial constraints to a huge degree.

As the search continues ‘in the background’, Conte may be hoping the saga gets concluded as soon as possible.

Pakistan counting on ICC task force for revival

The PCB hopes the task force set up by the ICC would help revive its international cricketing reputation, which has been battered by security fears. Earlier this year, the ICC established the task force to ensure that Pakistan would host international cricket in the future, security conditions permitting. The PCB was initially reluctant to accept the help of the task force when the idea was floated in February, but was now pinning its hopes of recovery on the efforts of the game’s governing body.”Ijaz Butt, the PCB chairman, will be apprising the task force about the issues being faced in our cricket and hopes that through the efforts of the task force, the best possible solutions can be worked out for Pakistan,” a release from the board said. “The efforts of David Morgan [the ICC president], Giles Clarke [the England and Wales Cricket Board chairman] and the other members are greatly appreciated by the PCB at a time when Pakistan cricket is facing its toughest challenges.”The task force, which will convene in Dubai on Friday and Saturday, is headed by Clarke and includes ICC general manager cricket Dave Richardson, former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja, former England captain Mike Brearley, and former Sri Lankan captain Ranjan Madugalle among its other members.Several countries have refused to tour Pakistan due to security fears. Cricket in the country was dealt a severe blow when the Sri Lankan team bus was attacked in Lahore in March this year, killing eight people and injuring five visiting players. The 2009 Champions Trophy was moved out of Pakistan to South Africa, while the country lost its share of 2011 World Cup matches later.

Ange drops David Turnbull injury update

Celtic manager Ange Postecoglou has dropped an injury update concerning David Turnbull.

What’s the latest?

In recent comments cited by Football Scotland, the Bhoys boss revealed that the midfielder’s hamstring injury picked up in the first half of the League Cup final victory over Hibernian on Sunday came as a result of fatigue, something which is down to the midfielder having started all but one of Celtic’s 34 fixtures so far this season.

Speaking about the 22-year-old’s knock, Postecoglou said: “David suffered from the number of games we are playing at the moment. We are suffering because of that. We have not been able to rotate the squad a lot and that is hurting us at the moment, picking up these injuries. We will just see how he is.”

Fans will be furious

Considering just how important a part of the Celtic side Turnbull has become under the management of Postecoglou, the fact that the midfielder looks set to spend a spell on the sidelines is sure to have left the Parkhead faithful furious.

Indeed, over his 18 Premiership appearances so far this season, the £4.5m-rated man has scored five goals, registered four assists and created seven big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of a whopping 4.1 key passes – the most of any player in the league – and taking 3.7 shots – the second-most in the division – per game.

These returns have seen the £14k-per-week Scotland international average a rather remarkable SofaScore match rating of 7.87, ranking him as the joint-best performer in the entirety of the top flight.

As such, with several crucial fixtures coming up for the Hoops in the next few weeks, including January’s clash with their Old Firm rivals, the midfielder’s absence is sure to come as a major blow to Postecoglou and his side.

Without Turnbull’s creativity in the middle of the park, Celtic are undoubtedly a far poorer outfit.

Hutton on Gerrard transfer plans for Villa

Former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has been reacting to Steven Gerrard’s decision to offload two senior attackers in the January transfer window, as per Football Insider.

The Lowdown: Gerrard’s plan

According to a Villa source, the club will look to move on two of Bertrand Traore, Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet, with Gerrard feeling that he has an unbalanced squad at Bodymoor Heath.

The new manager believes he has too many attacking players, with Villa set to listen to loan or permanent offers regarding the trio in the New Year.

A centre-back and a central midfielder are thought to be on Gerrard’s wish list, so it seems as if it could be a busy start to 2022 for NSWE.

The Latest: Hutton reacts

Hutton, who regularly contributes on BBC Radio 5 Live, was talking to Football Insider about Gerrard’s plans. The former Villa defender labelled them ‘interesting’ but agreed with the manager’s reported stance, saying:

“I don’t think that a massive rush (to sell) but I think Steven Gerrard’s right.

“They are heavily loaded in those forward areas. We can sit here and say these guys have had enough opportunities to be in the team and absolutely shine.

“We have seen it in flashes but I’ve always said I need more. I need to see more of it. We know how talented they are.

“He probably wants to balance that squad up a little bit. They’re very light at left-back but you’ve got all these wingers. I understand what he’s doing there.

“It will be interesting to see who he actually lets go because I think the owners will back the manager in January with a new signing or two. There is a big squad there so he will have to offset that.”

The Verdict: Who stays?

Should the rumours prove accurate, then perhaps it would be best to keep hold of Traore out of the three names mentioned. He only made the move to Villa Park last year and enjoyed a solid first season, contributing to 14 Premier League goals in 29 starts.

While he has struggled with injuries during the current campaign and is yet to start a league game in 2021/22, he has proven thathe can cope in the Premier League, something Trezeguet is yet to do with just 11 goal involvements in 55 games and El Ghazi’s 20 in 70 games – six of which have been penalties.

Sachin Tendulkar has opted out of the tri-series in Bangladesh starting on January 4. He will be replaced by Rohit Sharma in the 16-man squad. Yuvraj Singh has also been included despite a finger injury scare that kept him out of four ODIs in the five-match series against Sri Lanka.Ishant Sharma and Praveen Kumar have been dropped and replaced by Sreesanth and Ashok Dinda, who made his Twenty20 debut for India earlier this month. Amit Mishra displaced Pragyan Ojha in an inexplicable game of musical chairs for the back-up spinner’s role. Ravindra Jadeja retained his spot as the lone allrounder.Sreesanth, who did not play a role in the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka due to swine flu, has recovered and been named in the squad. The rookie Sudeep Tyagi, a part of the current ODI squad, has kept his place despite not playing a game. Dinesh Karthik has been named as the second wicketkeeper in the squad to Bangladesh.Rohit, 22, who was dropped from India’s ODI squad after an extended run of disappointing scores in limited-overs cricket, last played in the West Indies in July and was pushed aside by Virat Kohli in the batting line-up. Rohit paved his way back through a triple-century in the last round of Ranji Trophy league matches.Ishant, who was dropped for the first two ODIs against Sri lanka, failed to impress on his return – thanks to Sreesanth’s illness – for the later half of the series. In 14 overs in those two matches, he went for 130 runs, and failed to keep up the pressure along with Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra. He managed just two wickets at an average of 65.00 and an economy rate of 9.28. Before that, during the series against Australia at home, he managed five wickets in four matches at 30.00 each. Praveen, who played the first two matches of the Sri Lanka series, managed just one wicket and went at 6.76 runs per over.India play their first match in Bangladesh in Dhaka on January 5, against Sri Lanka, followed by fixtures on January 7, 10 and 11.
