Diop makes statement to Moyes in win

West Ham centre-back Issa Diop has given David Moyes one huge selection headache once again after he delivered another colossal display in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

The Irons sealed top spot in Group H and advanced into the knockout stages of the competition with a 2-0 victory over Rapid Wien, meaning they remain unbeaten in Europe across five matches, and the French defender was instrumental in keeping the clean sheet and helping the side on their way to the win.

With Angelo Ogbonna ruled out for the remainder of the season with an ACL injury, Diop did his chances of replacing the Italian veteran in the Premier League no harm whatsoever,

He may well have actually bolstered them substantially heading into this weekend’s major clash with defending champions Manchester City.

‘Did everything asked of him, Strong in the air, read the game well,’ is how football.london reporter Tom Clark in his post-match column and indeed, that was certainly the case as he was the more productive of Moyes’ two centre-backs.

As per SofaScore, Diop registered a match-high five clearances, won 100% of his aerial duels, and also made an interception and block apiece.

It follows up from his performance earlier in the campaign against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup, where assistant manager Stuart Pearce dubbed him a “colossus” for his impressive performance, whilst in the past, Jose Mourinho once dubbed him a “monster” for the way in which he contained Paul Pogba.

But the towering 24-year-old, who is currently valued at £13.5m by Transfermarkt, wasn’t just a big physical presence in the heart of defence but he was also adept with the ball at his feet, managing a passing accuracy of 99% from 77 attempts, as well as notching 89 touches of the ball.

After the Hammers’ defeat to Wolves on Saturday, with Craig Dawson getting the nod over Diop, Moyes now has plenty to ponder ahead of Sunday as the Frenchman just delivered a major statement as to why he could be the better option, in the big absence of Ogbonna.

Perhaps it is time to see if the former Toulouse beast can continue such form into the English top-flight. The Scotsman now has a massive call to make seeing as the centre-back continues to deliver each and every time he plays.

Leeds: Bielsa must unleash Klich v Arsenal

Following on from their crushing 7-0 defeat against Manchester City in midweek, Leeds United are back at Elland Road this evening for their latest Premier League fixture. They face Arsenal, who have won their two previous league games, scoring five and keeping two clean sheets in the process.

In terms of which players Marcelo Bielsa could pick in his starting XI, one man who didn’t start against City but should be in the team to face the Gunners is Mateusz Klich, who is currently earning £34k-per-week according to Salary Sport.

Klich must start

Despite not starting in midweek, the midfielder still got a significant number of minutes under his belt after coming on for the injured Jamie Shackleton shortly before half-time and seeing out the remainder of the match.

Even though the Poland international only had 32 touches of the ball, he still did his best to try and drive Leeds forward, and he contributed defensively as well. As well as completing 19 of his 23 passes, the 31-year-old also had one shot at goal whilst winning three duels and making two successful tackles and one interception.

This performance ultimately earned the midfielder an overall match rating of 6.4/10, higher than many Leeds players who started the game, according to SofaScore.

With this in mind, if Klich does start today and is given the freedom to roam forward and cause problems for Arsenal’s defence whilst helping out at the back for Leeds, he could be a frightening prospect for Mikel Arteta’s players to come up against.

Described as a player “who runs more, more intense movements and makes more movements at maximal speed” according to Bielsa, the 31-year-old has made 12 league appearances for the Whites so far this season, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process.

As well as Shackleton, Leeds have  Kalvin Phillips out injured, so Bielsa may have little choice but to play Klich this evening. However, with an average of 1.1 key passes and 1.6 shots at goal per game in the league so far this season, the Polish beast could be just what the Whites need to secure a result after their two defeats over the past week.

Tella could prove himself at Southampton

Given how Mohamed Elyounoussi is the only Southampton winger to have scored a goal in the Premier League this season, it’s safe to say that Ralph Hasenhuttl has not been able to rely on his wide players to find the net for his team at this point in the campaign.

With this in mind and the team as a whole scoring just 10 goals in the league, it seems as though the Saints could do with some extra firepower in their line-up to push them further up the table.

In his recent press conference ahead of Southampton’s Premier League clash against Norwich City at Carrow Road on Saturday, Hasenhuttl claimed that a number of fringe players will get their chance to prove their worth in the team to help Southampton get through the busy winter schedule.

One such player is Nathan Tella, who coincidentally made his senior debut for the Saints in June 2020 in their 3-0 win at Norwich after joining the club’s youth ranks from Arsenal in April 2017.

During his time at Southampton, the 22-year-old winger, who is currently valued at £1.8m by Transfermarkt, has made 45 appearances for their B team, scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists.

Tella, who pundit Owen Hargreaves has previously said “fancies himself” in terms of the pace he has to get past defenders, has not had many chances to shine in the first team so far this season – particularly in the Premier League, with just one start and two very short substitute appearances under his belt.

Now that Hasenhuttl has said that fringe players like Tella will get some decent minutes under their belts in the coming weeks and months, this could be exactly what the winger needs to really kick on with his career in the first team and prove to the manager that he has what it takes to be a regular figure for the Saints in the future.

Also, with Theo Walcott having very little attacking impact this season and his current contract at St Mary’s set to expire in the summer of 2023, this period now could be Tella’s chance to prove to the club that he can be their long-term replacement for the 32-year-old and save them millions in potential transfer fees for when Walcott eventually leaves. However, the youngster will need to make sure he adds some goals and assists to his tally before then – he has scored just twice in 29 senior appearances up to now.

West Ham fans buzz over Lingard update

Flocking to Twitter, many West Ham United fans have been left buzzing following ExWHUemployee’s update on transfer target Jesse Lingard.

Despite failing to sign the Manchester United star on a permanent deal last summer, prompting the club to turn to Nikola Vlasic as an alternative, they have been heavily tipped to return for another attempt in January.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments-2/” title=”West Ham developments” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

This comes as Lingard continues to be a bit-part player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having played just 63 minutes of Premier League football this season (WhoScored).

Reports have even suggested that United could opt to offload the 28-year-old for as little as £10 million in the winter window, possibly alerting West Ham as they reportedly eye a move.

Now, sharing an update on the West Ham Way Podcast, reliable club insider ExWHUemployee has shared an update on the Irons’ stance over making a mid-season move.

As per his information, it is believed that West Ham will make a move for the playmaker early in January as manager David Moyes eyes reinforcements.

West Ham fans buzz…

Given his obvious quality and dream spell on loan over the second half of 2020/2021, many Hammers supporters have been left buzzing on social media.

Lauded as ‘phenomenal’ and the best Premier League player on current form by talkSPORT pundit Adrian Durham back in April, his nine goals and four assists in 16 West Ham outings highlight just what he could bring under Moyes.

As Ex makes this claim, which one fan called ‘great news’, it’s little wonder many Irons are ecstatic.

Man City: Fans slam Ake vs RB Leipzig

Many Manchester City fans ripped into Nathan Ake during their Champions League clash with RB Leipzig on Tuesday night.

City were already assured of top spot in Group A as they headed to the Red Bull Arena given that they held a four-point advantage over second-place Paris Saint-Germain prior to kick-off.

Opponents Leipzig were looking to secure third and avoid crashing out of Europe altogether.

Pep Guardiola took the opportunity to make six changes from the side that beat Watford 3-1 on Saturday evening.

Zach Steffen took Ederson’s spot in goal, while John Stones, Ake and Oleksandr Zinchenko were brought into the back four in place of Ruben Dias, Aymeric Laporte and Joao Cancelo.

Rodri dropped out of the midfield for Fernandinho, Kevin de Bruyne came in for Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling gave way to Riyad Mahrez.

Recapping Ake’s tricky night vs Leipzig

It was Ake’s seventh start of the campaign in all competitions and his first in the UCL since the Matchday One meeting with the same opponent.

The game presented an opportunity for the Dutchman, then, but he missed a chance to equalise ten minutes before half time, heading off target from a set piece.

What’s more, only two of the six long balls he attempted were accurate (via SofaScore), while City gave up seven shots inside their own box and two ‘big chances’ in their 2-1 defeat.

Cook eager to 'give captaincy a go'

Alastair Cook has said he would “love to give the captaincy a go” if Andrew Strauss was rested from the tour of Bangladesh in March 2010

Alastair Cook: “I like being at the forefront of making decisions; always have done”•AFP

Alastair Cook, England’s Test opener, has said he would “love to give the captaincy a go” if Andrew Strauss was rested from the tour of Bangladesh in March 2010. Former England captain Michael Vaughan was among those who felt Strauss needed to be given a break after the tour of South Africa, which ends only a month before the trip to Bangladesh begins.”There has been talk that Andrew Strauss might take the Bangladesh tour off next March,” Cook said at a NatWest coaching session. “Hypothetically, if it was the case, I’d love to give the captaincy a go but it’s not my only goal in cricket. It’s not like I won’t be able to sleep at night if it doesn’t happen.”Cook was appointed England vice-captain after the row between Kevin Pietersen and Peter Moores ended in both men being sacked. “I’ve captained Bedford School, county age-group sides, county seconds and Essex, when Ronnie Irani was indisposed,” Cook said. “But I like being at the forefront of making decisions; always have done.”Cook made his Test debut against India in 2006 and scored a century in Nagpur, after which he went from strength to strength and became the youngest England player to reach 2000 Test runs. However, he struggled later on, most noticeably against Australia and will be challenged once again when he travels to South Africa to face one of the best fast-bowling attacks in the world.”It’s a pace attack that has everything and is probably the best in the world,” Cook said. “But I’ve done well against them and bowlers of that type before. I know what to expect and I enjoy the ball coming on.After the Ashes victory in 2009, Cook went back to Essex and worked with Graham Gooch to rectify certain technical issues. “I’ve always had a double back lift so we changed that, though I don’t hold the bat up as much as Goochie used to do when he took guard. I also worked on my body alignment and my footwork, so three major issues to tweak.”My strengths are off the back foot but you have to be careful any changes don’t compromise that. Every batsman in history probably has some technical fault or other. It’s about managing them.”

There are now plenty of opportunities for them to demonstrate their officiating skills within our domestic game and to aspire to being at the forefront of officiating the sport.”Richard Holdsworth, regional development manager ICC-Europe, said: “Paul has been involved in the ICC Development Programme since 2002, and during that time has excelled with his knowledge and skills in umpiring, not only continuing his own education but also choosing to educate others. He has stood in a significant number of ICC European and global matches and tournaments, and his experience was duly acknowledged when he was selected on the ICC Associate and Affiliate International panel in 2005. Doucoure was a liability against Palace

Everton were unable to secure a single point in their game against Crystal Palace on Sunday evening and faced a defeat of 3-1 to the Eagles away from home, putting the Merseyside club firmly in 14th for the foreseeable in the Premier League table.

Rafa Benitez’s side failed to dominate throughout the game against Crystal Palace with just 39% possession throughout, which ultimately lead to a brace from Conor Gallagher and James Tomkins scored his first goal since December 2019 against the Toffees to secure a 3-1 comfortable win.

One player who failed to offer dominance and control in his position was Abdoulaye Doucoure, who started the game in his usual position, but over the course of the match had become a complete liability for the Toffees. Richarlison may have been the one to hauled off early after a shoddy evening but his midfield colleague didn’t have the desired impact either.

Via SofaScore, Doucoure lost possession a total of 16 times (once every 2.8 touches), won fewer than half of his ground duels, and failed to make any creative impact on the attacking third of the game with no key passes or crosses over the entire 90 minutes of play.

The £75k-per-week beast furthered his forgettable performance by committing two fouls, one of which cost him a yellow card, which he aggressively contested against with Kevin Friend, where he was lucky not to receive further punishment for his reaction.

In the French midfielder’s defence, he was playing further back during the first half, which would have added an element of hindrance to his ability to be creative in his play for the forwards.

However, it does not excuse his wasteful performance, losing possession on many occasions and failing to dominate the midfield to break down the build of play from Crystal Palace.

Benitez will go back to the drawing board early this week with the hopes of emulating the confidence his Everton side displayed against Arsenal last week, but they face an extremely difficult challenge as they are away from home again, against Chelsea on Thursday evening.

There will be time for the manager to assess the situation, and potentially make some changes to his team to refresh his side, ready to take on the challenge the Merseyside Blues face at Stamford Bridge midweek.
