Solskjaer shouldn’t let Van de Beek go

It is no secret that Manchester United have been struggling with consistency this season, and their midfield setup seems to be the talking point time and time again.

United have a hefty number of midfield players in their squad including Paul Pogba, Bruno Fernandes and Scott McTominay, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can’t seem to get the balance right with his mix of midfielders to secure some good form and consistency.

Lots of Manchester United fans have been in uproar over plenty of the manager’s calls over the last few months of the new season, but one decision has stuck out more than any other – the constant snubbing of Donny Van de Beek.

The Dutchman joined the Red Devils in 2020, and although he has shown glimmers of greatness in individual performances, Solskjaer fails to include him as a regular in his starting XI. The 24-year-old has not started a single Premier League game this season, getting a paltry 16 top-flight minutes after more than a quarter of the campaign.

When asked by the media why he leaves the £100k-p/w gem on the bench most weeks, the manager defended his decision by saying: “Donny is still working hard, of course, and at the moment it’s hard. I know he’s not happy, but he works hard and he’s a top professional. He knows that that’s the way that sometimes it works in football, at the moment he’s not playing but he doesn’t let himself down.”

There has been a lot of praise for Van de Beek whenever he has been given minutes for the Mancunian giants from club legends like Rio Ferdinand, who told BT Sport: “I think he is the one player in this squad who is happy playing one-touch, two-touch, keeping it simple… sacrificing parts of his game to help other people flourish.

“In any great team you need players like that and he’s one player who will make other players tick, and make them play better.”

More recently, former club captain Paul Ince scolded Solskjaer for not including the 24-year-old in his starting midfield, as he fumed: “This is a player who Ole said, ‘come to Old Trafford, you’re going to start in my team, you’ll cost £40 million, you’re going to be the centre hub of the midfield’. Two years down the line he’s on the bench.

“He gives him four minutes against Atalanta and then goes, ‘oh by the way, here’s your chance, go and have 10 minutes against Manchester City where we’ve not touched the ball for 85 minutes and show me what you can do’.”

According to The Mirror, Newcastle United are very interested in signing the Dutch midfielder and are reportedly keen to target both Dean Henderson and Jesse Lingard as well. Solskjaer will need to find a way to ensure that fringe players such as these don’t go looking for first team football elsewhere.

If Van de Beek and the other two depart, it could have the Old Trafford faithful venting even more fury at the already under-pressure manager. Who knows, it might even prove to be the final nail in Solskjaer’s coffin if the likes of Van de Beek continue to be overlooked and results don’t improve.

Alan Nixon drops Derby County claim

Alan Nixon has dropped a worrying claim on Derby County’s ongoing off-field struggles.

What’s been said?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Sun journalist discussed both Middlesbrough and Wycombe Wanderers’ compensation claims against the Midlands outfit, with the former suggesting that the Rams’ financial irregularities saw them miss out on a play-off place back in 2018/19, while the latter suggest that the Pride Park side’s breaking of EFL rules resulted in their relegation from the Championship last season.

And, in response to a fan asking what his opinion on the claims lodged against Derby, Nixon said: “Up to them. Very dangerous precedent all the same.”

Fans will be terrified

Considering the sheer volume of off-field issues Wayne Rooney’s side are currently facing, with the club still being in administration and no potential buyer appearing close to completing a takeover of the club, the fact that Boro are claiming £45m and Wycombe £6m in compensation from the Rams will certainly have Derby fans terrified about their club’s future.

Indeed, speaking about the duo’s claims against the club, Carl Jackson – one of the administrators working with Derby – suggested that the issue will indeed need to be discussed with the EFL, something that – should the league’s governing body feel the Rams do indeed owe both clubs compensation – could have disastrous consequences for the Championship side.

Jackson said: “The claims are against Derby County Football Club and therefore, principally, those are issues that we have to deal with. It’s fair to say that there have been discussions with the EFL about those particular claims, and what I can say is the EFL will do what they can, working with us, to actually ensure those claims are dealt with properly and are not an impediment to our plans to restructure the club and find a new owner.”

However, as Nixon suggests, if Derby are forced into paying compensation to both Boro and Wycombe, it would indeed appear to create a dangerous president in the wider game, as any club punished by a league or competition’s governing body for breaking financial regulations would then subsequently face claims from any side who feel they were affected by the matter.

Either way, the news is certainly not good for Derby County or their fans, with the future of the Rams looking bleaker by the day.

Tottenham transfer news on Sayers

An insider at Tottenham Hotspur has now dropped some insight on their new signing Charlie Sayers.

The Lowdown: Sayers signs

As confirmed on Tuesday afternoon on the official website of the Spurs faithful, Sayers has now joined the Academy from Southend United on a scholarship programme.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-5/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The North London club were reportedly ‘impressed’ with the young left-back, who has spent the last few weeks on trial with them, as per Lilywhites insider John Wenham.

He had played in six matches for Southend in the National League earlier this season, before making his debut for THFC’s U18s (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: Wenham on Sayers

Speaking to Football Insider, Wenham has now given some insight into Sayers, and claims that he could be promoted to the U23s soon:

“I knew he was going to sign as soon as he captained the Under 18s last week.

“We wouldn’t have given him the armband if he was still on trial.

“From what I understand he’s already trained with the Under 23s as well.

“Everything else I have heard about him is really exciting. He’s already played for Southend’s senior side.

“He can carry that experience into the Under 18s and he will be looking at a space in the Under 23s too.

“Dennis Cirkin left and joined Sunderland in the summer and we haven’t replaced him.

“So, is there a chance for him to go even further straight away? I wouldn’t rule it out.

“This is a really exciting move and I can’t wait to follow Sayers’ development.”

The Verdict: Bright future

The fact that he is only 17 years of age and could be promoted to the U23s already suggests that Sayers has a bright future on his hands.

Having already played senior football with Southend, he would have learned a lot from his experience, and playing in those physical games will only speed up his development.

If the Englishman can now impress with the U23s as well as the U18s, he should certainly catch the eye of Antonio Conte, who could use some cover for Sergio Reguilon at left-back, given that Ben Davies has been playing as a central defender in his new system.

Nonetheless, Sayers is a player that you can see coming through the Academy and into the senior squad at a later date.

Newcastle must make Wijnaldum transfer swoop

With 13 games played in the Premier League and no wins under their belt so far this season, it’s safe to say that newly appointed Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has a big challenge on his hands to avoid relegation by the end of the campaign.

Taking into account how the January transfer window is on the horizon, Newcastle’s wealthy new owners could be forced into splashing the cash and bring some new players in to strengthen the squad at St. James’ Park so they have a good chance of escaping relegation.

With this in mind, it seems as though the club could bring a familiar face back to the club in their attempt to dodge the drop.

It has been reported by TEAMtalk that Newcastle have made it clear to French club Paris Saint-Germain that they would be interested in making a move to sign former Toon star Georginio Wijnaldum in January if he was to become available after a slow start to life with Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

During his time at Newcastle, Wijnaldum managed to score 11 goals and provide five assists in 40 appearances for the Magpies across all competitions, showing how much of an attacking and creative threat he can be from midfield.

This is exactly what Newcastle could do with right now given how Callum Wilson (4) and Allan Saint-Maximin (3) are the only two players that have scored on more than one occasion in the league so far this season.

With 27 goals in the Premier League under his belt, Wijnaldum, who was described as a “beautiful” person by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp when he left the Merseyside club at the end of last season, could relish the chance to add to that tally once again and potentially rescue a club that he has previously stated he has a lot of love for if his situation at PSG doesn’t improve.

However, it would be a big decision for the Dutchman to make to give up playing in a team that are in the Champions League to jump into a relegation battle with Newcastle, even if he would be guaranteed more playing time back at St. James’ Park.

Moving forward, with Wijnaldum starting just nine of the 18 appearances he’s made for the French club so far this season, if a possible deal can be made for him in January, then Newcastle should do all they can to convince him to return to the Tyneside club as a player that could potentially save them from relegation and be their hero.

Anamul and Mominul guide Bangladesh home

Scorecard
Bangladesh Under-19 took a 1-0 lead in the five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe Under-19 with a convincing six-wicket win in Khulna. In pursuit of 205, they were boosted by a collective display, as each batsman chipped in with contributions towards the victory. Two that stood out were wicketkeeper Anamul Haque (52), who set the tone for a successful chase with an opening stand of 76 with Saikat Ali, and Mominul Haque, whose 80-ball 63, laced with six boundaries, guided his team home.Zimbabwe’s below-par score was a result of a collapse in the death overs, where they lost seven wickets for just 42. They were in a position to build a more competitive total, as half-centuries from Dean Mazhawidza (77) and Gary Chirimuta (51), had taken them to a strong position at 164 for 3 – the pair had added 110 for the fourth wicket. But Kamrun Islam’s economical spell of 3 for 37, and support from the other bowlers, stopped Zimbabwe in their tracks, giving Bangladesh an opportunity to seal a comprehensive win.
