Predicted Rangers XI vs Brondby

Rangers face Brondby away from home in the Europa League tonight as they look to replicate their 2-0 win against them at Ibrox earlier this season.

The win against the Danish outfit is their only one in the group stage so far this term, following losses to both Lyon and Sparta Prague.

Steven Gerrard’s side are heading into this clash full of confidence after a superb 6-1 drubbing of Motherwell on Sunday in the Premiership.

How many changes will Gerrard make from that game? Here is our predicted XI for the match…

We are predicting that he will make three alterations to the side, with Jon McLaughlin, John Lundstram and Kemar Roofe coming into the team.

Starting off between the sticks, McLaughlin could return to replace Allan McGregor after the veteran’s clanger at the weekend against Motherwell. He attempted to gather the ball from a low shot and inadvertently spilt it straight to Bevis Mugabi, who scored the opening goal in the game.

Not only did he make a mess of the initial shot to create the rebound, but he also allowed Mugabi to sneak the ball past him at the near post on the follow-up despite being back up and ready to make a save. This could cause Gerrard to axe him from the XI in favour of McLaughlin, in an attempt to avoid any major errors against Brondby.

In midfield, Steven Davis and Glen Kamara may keep their spots in the side, despite a slight injury doubt for the latter. Next to them, however, summer signing Lundstram could replace Scott Arfield, who struggled in spite of Rangers’ impressive display against Motherwell. Per SofaScore, he lost seven of his eight individual duels on the pitch and failed to create a single chance, showing that he was not at his best defensively or offensively for the Gers.

Finally, Roofe could come in for Joe Aribo on the right of the front three. We published an article explaining why the Nigerian international needs to be dropped to the bench for this match, as he has played too much football this season and could be suffering from burnout. Therefore, Roofe – who scored off the bench against Motherwell – could replace the £14k-per-week gem.

Newcastle eyeing Alexandre Lacazette

Newcastle United have their eye on Arsenal striker Alexandre Lacazette, according to journalist Ekrem Konur.

The lowdown

According to The Athletic last month, the writing is seemingly on the wall for the 30-year-old at Arsenal as he approaches the end of his contract in June. He could be available on a cut-price deal in January if the Gunners want to avoid losing him for free.

Lacazette has only started three Premier League games so far this season, his solitary goal rescuing a point against Crystal Palace, although Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher applauded him for an ‘outstanding’ performance in that game.

The latest

According to Konur on Twitter, Newcastle are ‘closely monitoring the situation’ of Lacazette at the Emirates Stadium.

They aren’t the only club keeping tabs, though, with his former employers Lyon also lurking as the Ligue 1 outfit have plans to bring him back when the January transfer window rolls around.

The verdict

Lacazette has proven himself to be a reliable Premier League goalscorer by netting 51 times in 134 appearances in the division.

Newly-installed Newcastle manager Eddie Howe already has a proven marksman at his disposal in the form of Callum Wilson, but according to Transfermarkt, the 43-year-old’s preferred formation is a 4-4-2. That would mark a change from the setups employed by Steve Bruce and Graeme Jones in recent weeks as both often went with just one central striker.

If Howe wants to implement a 4-4-2 at St James’ Park, he may need an upgrade on Joelinton and Dwight Gayle, who between them have scored just 11 Premier League goals since the start of the 2019/20 season. Lacazette, who has more than double that tally on his own in the same timeframe, would give Howe a much more potent option to partner with Wilson, and he could come relatively cheap if Arsenal want to make some money on him before letting him walk away as a free agent next summer.

Man United given fresh Pochettino boost

Manchester United have been boosted in their efforts to bring in Mauricio Pochettino as manager due to his relationship with Leonardo at Paris Saint-Germain, according to a report in The Telegraph.

The Lowdown: Ole no more

The inevitable end to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign as United manager took place on Sunday, with the Norwegian relieved of his duties after a run of dreadful form. Just one win in seven Premier League outings was rightly deemed not good enough and the search is now on to find his successor.

Pochettino appears to be at the front of the queue at the moment, although that would mean the Argentine upping sticks and leaving his current post at Paris Saint-Germain.

[freshpress-poll id=“378953″]

The Latest: Fresh Pochettino update

United have received a fresh boost in their attempts to appoint Pochettino, with The Telegraph’s Jason Burt and James Ducker claiming his relationship with PSG sporting director is not strong.

It is stated that the ‘growing friction’ between the pair could ‘open the door’ for Pochettino’s exit to Old Trafford.

The Verdict: Not perfect, but a good candidate

With each passing day, the more it feels as though Pochettino is the man to become United’s latest manager, and he has the potential to be a strong appointment.

The biggest thing working against the 49-year-old is a lack of trophies, with none coming his way in five impressive years at Tottenham. Pochettino’s spell in north London was undoubtedly successful, though, with a Champions League final reached, good football played and a strong bond formed with the players and supporters.

The case for the former Argentina international coming to Old Trafford appears to be strengthened by his frosty relationship with Leonardo at PSG – the hope is that, if he does swap Paris for Manchester, the same scenario won’t develop between him and the much-maligned Glazer ownership.

We're not out for revenge – Sangakkara

Sri Lanka surrendered their last two home series to India but scored an emphatic victory on Saturday, one that left Sangakkara pleased at the way the team had shaped up

Kumar Sangakkara: “If Malinga is firing well and the ball is swinging he is equally deadly with the newer or older ball”•AFP

Kumar Sangakkara, Sri Lanka’s captain, is not out for revenge against India after the recent history the two teams have shared. Sri Lanka surrendered their last two home series to India but scored an emphatic victory on Saturday, one that left Sangakkara pleased at the way the team had shaped up.”I think you learn from your past games and you move on and you face newer teams, different combinations every single time you go out. So the past is the past really,” said Sangakkara after the team’s practice session. “You cannot dwell on it too much and get lost in it. You’ve got to be prepared for the present and for the future.”Sangakkara denied Sri Lanka gained a psychological advantage over India in the dress rehearsal for Monday and was keen to keep the focus on the final. Sri Lanka are unbeaten in finals at home this decade and Sangakkara hoped to kept that outstanding record. “Every victory is done and over. You’ve just got to get ready and face the next challenge. We have won one or two games here, so we’ve just got to get prepared for the finals. We have just spoken about clearer plans for everyone. We are just on the right track to build from here. And each victory in that journey is very important.”Sri Lanka’s middle order has been boosted by the late call-ups to Thilan Samaraweera and Thilina Kandamby. Samaraweera’s exceptional maiden century lifted Sri Lanka from 69 for 5 against New Zealand and on Saturday Kandamby’s unbeaten 91 seized the momentum back from India. Sangakkara identified those contributions, as well as Sanath Jayasuriya’s return to form, as “very important factors in subcontinent conditions”. “With Sanath in form with his batting and his bowling I think it balances the side very well,” he said. “The middle order is just started clicking. You just have to keep that going … work hard and at the end of the day every single batsman must be responsible for his performance.”Calling it right at the toss has been a crucial factor at the R Premadasa stadium, where Sri Lanka have preferred to bat first and then call upon their magnificent bowlers to strangle the opposition. Sangakkara has, in every press conference at this venue after the Tests, stressed on the need to change history and he spoke of the same today. “Are you going to think about the toss and not about winning the game, or are you going to try and win the game no matter what happens with the toss? I think we’ve got to get the attitudes and our minds right. We know what the reality is so we got to fight harder and harder every single time and try change them.”My theory of luck is simple. If you are prepared and you train very hard then the need for luck is minimise. The toss unfortunately cannot control that and what you can control is how you react to it and what do you do after it. Whether you bat first or second you got no choice you have to try and win the game.”Sri Lanka will take a final call on Muttiah Muralitharan on match day, but one bowler who has lessened the impact of his absence has been Lasith Malinga. After rocking New Zealand with an explosive three-wicket over on Tuesday, Malinga had the Indians hopping. “If Malinga is firing well and the ball is swinging he is equally deadly with the newer or older ball. In these conditions when the ball is slightly older he seems to get a bit of reverse-swing very early with his action,” said Sangakkara. “I think that is his gain, his strength. We just want to make sure that we exploit every bowler’s and each player’s strength every time we use them.”

Wolves must unleash Luke Cundle

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ start to the 2021/22 campaign was far from ideal.

Bruno Lage endured a rough and tumble beginning as Wolves boss with three straight defeats but his fortunes have swiftly changed.

The Midlands outfit have gone from a lacklustre side under Nuno Santo last term to a team now right in the hunt for European football, something Jeff Shi and Fosun will no doubt be delighted with.

However, they now have to negotiate the murky and choppy waters of the festive period.

A clash against Burnley is first up for Lage and his side in December but they will have to do it without star midfielder Ruben Neves who will miss the visit of the Clarets due to suspension.

Opportunity knocks

Missing Neves is sure to come as a pretty hefty blow to Wolves. After all, his importance to the team has been immense this campaign with the Portuguese maestro failing to miss a match all season and starting all but two Premier League encounters.

What makes this even more troubling is a lack of depth in central areas. Morgan Gibbs-White is out on loan at Sheffield United while Bruno Jordao is out injured.

Joao Moutinho will be relied upon to set the tone but with Romain Saiss and Leander Dendoncker now preferred in the backline, it will be interesting to see who partners the experienced dynamo in the middle of the park.

One man that Lage should turn to is teenager Luke Cundle.

The 19-year-old now skippers the club’s U23 side and is impressing all the time at youth level. He’s made such impressive strides that he has been training with the senior team ahead of the game with Burnley on Wednesday evening.

That leads us to believe that he could be a viable solution to the manager’s current dilemma and it wouldn’t be a great surprise if he did start the match.

After all, the youngster is tidy on the ball and could provide Wolves with a spark they’re missing with Neves out.

He has found the net on eight occasions during his youth career, laying on 12 assists in the process too.

A rave review from U23 boss, James Collins, tells you why he’s so highly rated at Molineux. He once said: “He’s got an outstanding brain and drives the game, he runs the game and dictates it which is a great skill.

“He’s intelligent, makes good decisions, can attack and defend and when you first see him, you wonder whether he could be a Premier League player because he’s slight and small.”

Collins added: “He’s ready for that step up. Whether that’s with our first team or whether that’s a loan, because watching him [against Birmingham City U23s], I thought he was magnificent.”

With those comments in mind, Lage should definitely turn to the exciting teenager in midweek. He has only ever made two senior appearances but it could just be game-changing for Wolves.

T&T top group, Deccan crash out

In a match they must win to qualify for the next stage of the Champions League, the Deccan Chargers bowlers shook off a horribly wayward start to restrict Trinidad & Tobago to a par score on an excellent batting pitch in Hyderabad

The Bulletin by George Binoy14-Oct-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out
Dwayne Bravo bowled a superb final over and finished with 3 for 24•Global Cricket Ventures-BCCIThey’ve tried nine times but Deccan Chargers have not won in Hyderabad yet. This latest defeat, by a three-run margin to Trinidad & Tobago, had serious consequences – it made the 2009 champions the only IPL team to crash out in the first round of the Champions League after losing both Group A matches. T&T, on the other hand, are unexpected toppers and will carry forward two points to the second round from beating fellow qualifiers Somerset.Neither team took decisive control of the game at any stage: both outfits were haphazard but T&T lifted at pivotal moments to prevail in a tense finish. Their batsmen entertained, playing a shot a minute, but didn’t stay long enough to cause significant damage – scoring only 149 on a terrific batting surface. Their bowlers took early wickets but wilted under Adam Gilchrist’s flashing bat and, when they fought back, Venugopal Rao threatened to snatch victory from them. With only eight runs to defend in the final over, Daren Ganga gave Dwayne Bravo the responsibility and T&T’s most experienced player delivered. The whole match had a feeling of unpredictability to it; performances were neither clinical nor efficient. Deccan aided T&T’s start by bowling poor lines and conceding an inexcusable number of extras. The batsmen attacked, disregarding the quality of deliveries. Edges flew for fours, balls were scooped into helmets, overthrows went to the boundary and dropped catches resulted in wickets. There was a freaky lbw, a fluke stumping and a batsman was struck on the neck by a bouncer. In the midst of the chaos, William Perkins top-scored with 38, Keiron Pollard blasted 31 off 14 balls, and fiery Fidel Edwards finished with 3 for 32.Edwards was charged up for this contest and not merely because he was a Barbadian playing against local rivals; he had been barred against Somerset for bowling two beamers. He had words for T&T’s openers and then sent down a fast, if not always well-directed, first over. Perkins tried to flick one of those speedy deliveries but the leading edge bounced just once before going over the point boundary. The first delivery Edwards aimed at middle stump brought him a wicket – Lendl Simmons played across and was lbw.RP Singh then bowled a shocker. He had drifted down leg often in his first over and bowled a hat-trick of front-foot no-balls in his second. Darren Bravo missed the first two free-hits but pulled the third over midwicket for four. RP then delivered a wide outside off stump but the worst was yet to come. An overthrow off the last ball cost Deccan five leg byes and Gilchrist’s disgust was plain to see.T&T raced to 49 for 1 after five overs and Gilchrist brought a fourth bowler into the attack. Darren Bravo welcomed T Suman with a leg-glanced boundary but then smacked one straight back to him. A ball later Andrew Symonds’ direct hit caught Daren Ganga short at the bowler’s end. Perkins, though, batted without restraint, pulling Pragyan Ojha to the midwicket fence, lofting Symonds over cover, and playing a scoop on to the grill of his helmet, before moving across his stumps and falling lbw to Edwards. They were 92 for 4 after 13 – the run-rate was alright but the wickets weren’t – when Dwayne Bravo cut hard to Suman at point. The catch was spilled but Suman recovered and ran out Bravo. The dismissal brought Pollard into play and he tore into the spinners. Ojha disappeared to the long-off and midwicket boundaries and Suman watched two full balls sail over his head. Edwards suffered too – Pollard pulling him for a flat six – before recovering to uproot the leg stump.T&T’s innings lost steam thereafter. Ramdin had fallen to a lucky stumping off Symonds, when Gilchrist failed to collect, but the ball bounced off his gloves on to the stumps. The tailenders could not cope with the death bowling – Dave Mohammed took an RP Singh bouncer on his neck – and they settled for 149.Determined to end the home-ground jinx, Gilchrist kick-started the chase with an uppercut for six and an edge for four to take 11 off the first over. T&T fought back by striking regularly and at 30 for 3, with Symonds run out, Deccan’s chase was coming apart. Their captain, however, continued to charge – driving, hooking and playing his devastating pick-up shot over midwicket with success. Gilchrist raced to 50 off 31 balls and Ganga, realising his spinners were having little effect on this pitch, turned to Lendl Simmons. He struck immediately when Gilchrist pulled to deep midwicket and Pollard ran to his left to intercept the speeding ball.Gilchrist’s dismissal was followed by Rohit Sharma’s and, with 64 needed off 47, T&T were back on top. Rao redressed the balance by clearing the straight boundary twice and hitting fours whenever the pressure started to mount. Deccan needed only 13 off 13 balls when Rao edged Rampaul to Denesh Ramdin. The match once again swung T&T’s way, for the final time, and Bravo’s final over ended Deccan’s run in the tournament.

Ganga cleared to play Champions League

Daren Ganga, the Trinidad and Tobago (T&T) captain, has been cleared to play the Champions League in India next month after his employers, Petrotrin, had initially refused to grant him leave for the Twenty20 tournament.Ganga, who works as a community relations officer with the state-owned oil company, wrote to the T&T Cricket Board, West Indies Players Association (WIPA) and the West Indies Cricket Board stating his case but his request for time off was granted only after two politicians stepped in.Jack Warner, a vice-president of football’s governing body FIFA and a member of parliament, had acted first by contacting National energy minister Conrad Enill, who then intervened to get the leave sanctioned for Ganga. Warner was very critical of the company’s attitude towards to an employee who has represented West Indies in senior cricket.”I still can’t believe in this day and age, people are still being refused time off to represent our country, particularly by a state-owned company. Petrotrin should be ashamed,” Warner told CMC. “Imagine that. Using your annual leave and sick leave to go on national duty. This is absolutely ridiculous.”Ganga leads a 15-member squad for the Champions League which runs from October 8 to 23. Trinidad is the only team representing West Indies in the tournament.
