-O Muralha é meu amigo e, independentemente de qualquer situação, sempre me dá apoio – contou o goleiro.

RUEDA EVITA CRAVAR GOLEIRO DO SEGUNDO JOGO

Agora, quem joga a segunda partida… Temos 20 dias.

Ele fez grandes defesas. Vamos passar apoio. São coisas do futebol – comentou o meia.

Leeds: Liam Cooper has been an unsung hero this season

Leeds United have endured a difficult start to the Premier League season and are currently 15th in the table after 11 games.

Recent wins against Watford and Norwich are their only two victories in the top-flight this term as they sit on 11 points, with two wins, five draws and four defeats.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have hit a small patch of form of late, with one defeat in their last five Premier League games – including two wins and two draws in that time.

Unsung hero

One player who has potentially gone under the radar with his performances due to the nature of the results this season is centre-back Liam Cooper.

The Lillywhites skipper has put in some excellent display at the back, despite Leeds only winning two matches, and deserves credit for his form this term.

Raphinha is the only Leeds outfield player with a higher SofaScore rating (7.26) than Cooper (6.98) this season, highlighting the overall standard of his performances on the pitch for Bielsa at the back.

Presenter Jack Collins compared his importance to Leeds on a spiritual basis to that of Sergio Ramos’ for his respective sides. He told the Rank FC Podcast:

“I think Liam Cooper is a very, very good footballer and I think the fact that Leeds have struggled when he’s not been in the side is testament to the fact that he is actually crucial – not only on a spiritual level, in that [Sergio] Ramos-esque kind of thing – but actually, technically, bringing the ball out, playing this Bielsa system, he’s a very, very good footballer.”

Cooper has started all 11 of Leeds’ Premier League games and put up some eye-catching defensive numbers. Per SofaScore, he has won an outstanding 76 duels in those 11 games, whilst also making 25 tackles and 21 interceptions from centre-back.

He has not been without his faults, with a penalty conceded against Everton earlier in the campaign. However, the standard of his displays overall show that he has more than made up for that error, with his ability to win the ball back for his team on a regular basis.

The Scot has won 62% of his duels this season and completed 86% of his attempted passes, which shows that he is effective in both his defending and his build-up play. This is why he has been an unsung hero for Leeds in the top-flight, as he is piecing together cohesive showings and proving himself to be a reliable option at this level.

Samaraweera recalled to ODI squad

Thilan Samaraweera has been recalled to the Sri Lankan one-day international side after a four-year absence, but there was no space for Chaminda Vaas for the upcoming series against Pakistan. The legspinner Malinga Bandara has also been included in a 15-man squad that includes Lasith Malinga and Muttiah Muralitharan, passed fit after missing the Tests against Pakistan.Samaraweera, 32, played his last ODI in 2005 but targetted a return to the limited-overs frame during an excellent run of form in Tests earlier this year. Vaas had announced his retirement from Test cricket before the final match against Pakistan, citing his desire to continue until the 2011 World Cup, but his non-selection leaves a question mark over his future. Vaas managed just one wicket in the SSC Test and was dropped last year from Sri Lanka’s Twenty20 squad. The opener Upul Tharanga takes up a top-order batting slot with Tillakaratne Dilshan, who sustained injuries to the finger and head in the third Test in Colombo, ruled out. Chamara Kapugedera has been included after being overlooked for the ICC World Twenty20.Sri Lanka’s bowling is in sound health. Ireland wrapped up a comfortable series win, beating Kenya by 52 runs via the Duckworth-Lewis method, after dismissing the tourists for a below-par 175 in the second ODI in Dublin.Boyd Rankin took 3 for 40 at the top, helping to reduce Kenya to a shaky 66 for 4, but Kenya’s Alex Obanda fought back for the visitors with a powerful 59 from 78. He put on 34 with Collins Obuya before he became Rankin’s third victim, caught by Regan West who himself went on to take 2 for 36 in a tidy spell of bowling.Kyle McCallan also impressed, picking up 2 for 30, as Kenya – in spite of an entertaining 48-ball 40 from Nehemia Odhiambo – were rolled for an unsatisfactory 175.William Porterfield, the Ireland captain, ensured his side got off to a flier with three bullet fours off one Thomas Odoya over, sharing in a superb opening stand of 102 with Gary Wilson, who excelled with 51 from 61. Wilson, strong on the drive, took Odoya for four through extra cover and, in the next over, lofted him over the top for four more. And when Porterfield took Odhiambo for four fours in one particularly wayward over, Ireland were well on course for a thumping victory. After smashing Steve Tikolo for six over his head, Porterfield fell the very next ball one short of a deserved fifty, and the rain then came tumbling down at the end of the over to halt proceedings. By now, however, Ireland were miles ahead in the eyes of Duckworth-Lewis, and after one hour and twenty minutes, the match and series were duly awarded to Porterfield’s side. The two sides meet again tomorrow for the third and final match.

Celtic: Callum McGregor praises Anton McElhone

Celtic captain Callum McGregor has hailed Anton McElhone’s impact at Parkhead, Celts Are Here report.

The Lowdown: McElhone’s arrival

Postecoglou highlighted the need for a Head of Sport Science addition in Glasgow and brought in McElhone back in September.

The former Morton caretaker, who prefers a 4-2-3-1 system, has previously worked as a fitness coach at Tottenham and with MLS side New England Revolution.

Celtic have never officially confirmed McElhone’s arrival, so some might not even know he was at Parkhead, however, Postecoglou’s first backroom staff signing appears to be settling in nicely.

The Latest: McGregor’s comments

McGregor, who has been a regular this season, was quizzed on McElhone’s impact in a press conference on Tuesday, relayed by Celts Are Here.

This is what he had to say in reply, with the Hoops regular labelling the head of sports science as ‘a great personality’.

“It was a position that we were looking for throughout the summer in terms of trying to recruit the best type of people that we could get in the building with good knowledge.

“Anton’s certainly got that. He’s been at Spurs – worked in America – and he’s come in and been a great personality. He’s just helping the good work that’s been done as well.

“There are a lot of good guys in the building that are desperate to do well and get the boys fit and hungry on the pitch.

“Anton’s certainly come in and helped on top of that with the ideas that he’s brought from Tottenham and America.”

The Verdict: Good signs

McGregor has clearly been impressed by what McElhone has brought to Lennoxtown, and results have also been on the up in recent weeks.

The Hoops are unbeaten in six domestic games, winning their last four, and hopefully, things will only get better under Postecoglou and McElhone in the background.

There seems to be a feel-good factor at Celtic Park at this moment in time, which may have a lot to do with the work the likes of McElhone and others are putting in.

In other news: Nicholson may be close to Celtic signing with electric speed and the player has now spoken.

Aston Villa are admirers of Thomas Frank

Aston Villa are thought to be admirers of Brentford manager Thomas Frank, according to The Athletic’s Gregg Evans.

The Lowdown: Frank’s time at Brentford…

The Dane was actually Dean Smith’s assistant at the west London club and took over as their manager when the latter joined Villa back in 2018. Since then, he has taken charge of 161 games, winning 79 of those and taking the Bees into the Premier League.

Brentford have impressed in their first Premier League campaign, beating Arsenal and West Ham and drawing with Liverpool, whose manager Jurgen Klopp labelled Frank ‘incredible’ and ‘entertaining’.

Villa are now on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Smith, and it seems as if they may look to take another Brentford manager three years on after securing the 50-year-old.

The Latest: Villa are admirers of Frank

Evans shared a story on The Athletic regarding Smith’s sacking and the contenders to replace him.

Well-known targets such as Steven Gerrard, Ralph Hasenhuttl and Kasper Hjulmand were mentioned, but the journalist added that Villa are admirers of Frank.

Evans also claimed that NSWE are prepared to pay compensation to get the manager they want, which would not preclude any candidates who are currently in a job.

The Verdict: Lange to be key?

Sporting director Johan Lange will reportedly play a key role in bringing in a new head coach, so a move for fellow countryman Frank could be a realistic one. The pair know each other well after sharing an office when coaching at Lyngby, and the Brentford boss has impressed in his first season as a manager in the English top flight.

Lightning may well end up striking twice when it comes to Brentford bosses leaving for Villa, so the links to the 48-year-old may be worth keeping a close eye on during the international break.

In other news: Five-honour boss also in NSWE’s Villa’s thoughts; he’s ‘one of the best’.

Rangers ace Roofe goal for Jamaica

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left buzzing as some footage emerged of Kemar Roofe bagging for Jamaica against Honduras in the early hours of Thursday morning.

As shared by the official Twitter page of the Ibrox faithful, the 28-year-old scored his first goal for Jamaica, as he tapped home from a driven cross to give his team the lead in the first half.

Having been born in England, Roofe has switched his allegiances to Jamaica in order to get more opportunities to play, and it certainly looks to have been the right decision as he scored what he will hope will be the first of many at international level.

With Premier League stars such as Leon Bailey and Michail Antonio who also play for the national team, there is no doubt that the striker will enjoy his time playing for his country.

Harry Winks’ time is surely up at Spurs

Harry Winks’ time at Tottenham Hotspur is surely running out after the Englishman endured another disappointing outing this week.

The 25-year-old has been restricted to only 60 minutes of action in the Premier League so far this season, so the bulk of his opportunities to impress have come in domestic and European cup competitions.

Nuno Santo heavily rotated his side for their Europa League clash at Vitesse on Thursday night, leaving home the bulk of his starting XI, a decision which seemed pretty smart considering that he still had plenty of options available.

One of those was Winks, who started in the Netherlands, making it four appearances from a possible five in the competition, but he failed to take the golden chance handed to him.

With the January transfer window on the horizon, it could be best if both parties go their separate ways.

According to The Times, the Hotspur Way academy graduate is likely to seek a temporary move away from north London. He attracted interest from Everton, Aston Villa and Brighton in the summer and needs regular game time to stand a chance of breaking back into the England squad.

Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, it could be wise for Spurs to simply offload Winks, as it seems unlikely that a positive loan spell would see him suddenly rise through Nuno’s pecking order.

The Lilywhites could instead sell him and use the funds to bolster other key areas of the squad such as in attack, where Harry Kane still lacks a backup, or in attacking midfield as they have been bereft of creativity for quite some time.

With all due respect to the Dutch outfit, who were very worthy winners, the north Londoners should be sweeping aside such teams, especially when there are several players with points to prove on the pitch.

Winks was pretty poor once again, not only picking up a yellow card for his troubles, but also winning just two of nine battles (22%) in the engine room, thus proving to be lightweight. He also committed three fouls and lost possession 11 times, as per SofaScore.

At half-time, BT Sport pundit Chris Sutton questioned his attitude and ability, claiming that the 25-year-old maestro “looked a shadow of himself” [21st October, 18:40pm].

In the past, Spurs legend Graham Roberts dubbed him “an average player” during an interview with Football FanCast in the summer.

After another abject display and one which will hardly have Nuno rushing to keep him involved, perhaps it would be wise if Winks never featured for the club again as it is clear that he is simply not good enough.

If he can’t do it against Vitesse, then there’s no real hope in the Premier League. It’s time to get rid and move on.
