Newcastle line up swoop for Keylor Navas

An update has emerged on PSG goalkeeper Keylor Navas, regarding Newcastle’s interest in his services.

What’s the talk?

According to Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo, Newcastle’s new owners, PIF, are lining up a swoop for the PSG goalkeeper.

The report claims Navas is one of the players on the Magpies’ transfer wishlist following PIF’s takeover of the club from Mike Ashley, with Mauro Icardi and Philippe Coutinho also mentioned.

Fans would love it

Newcastle must ensure that they can get a deal over the line for Navas in the January window as he would be a marquee addition to the squad. The fans would love the statement of intent his signing would send, as the shot-stopper is an established, decorated, top-class player in European football.

At the age of 34, Navas would not be a signing for the long-term, but that does not mean he would not have a positive impact on the club’s future. If they can get a player of his reputation through the door then it could persuade others to follow suit and join the project, with the £210k-per-week gem potentially being the trailblazer of the new era in the Magpies’ history.

Earlier this year, PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino lauded Navas’ impact on the team. He said:

“We can say his actions show his quality. He just proves that he’s at the highest level in the world.

“I think we all saw him tonight. There are good and bad times in football. In a match, you have to know how to hold on. We were able to do that, with the help of our great goalkeeper, who made the difference.”

Navas has played over 200 times for Real Madrid and PSG combined during his career, winning an eye-catching three Champions League titles, among other trophies. However, he is currently playing second-fiddle to European Championships Player of the Tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma, which could open the door for Newcastle to swoop in.

Whilst he would arrive at St. James’ Park with a wealth of experience and an aura of respect, the Costa Rica international has still got the quality to make a difference on the pitch despite his age. He has a sensational 50% penalty save rate in Paris, saving four of the eight he has faced between the sticks for the Ligue 1 side, and has kept 41 clean sheets in 88 matches for PSG.

Newcastle supporters would be undeniably pleased with that.

Newcastle may consider Benitez & Gerrard

Liam Kennedy has named Rafa Benitez and Steven Gerrard as two alternative candidates who may now come into Newcastle United’s thinking as their search for a Steve Bruce replacement goes on.

The Lowdown: Howe likely?

As per Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie, talks are now ongoing between Eddie Howe and the St. James’s Park faithful over the vacant manager’s position, currently being held by Graeme Jones on an interim basis.

He adds that the former AFC Bournemouth boss is under ‘serious consideration’ following Unai Emery’s rejection yesterday.

Howe has even held talks with the North East club over the role before the takeover by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) consortium was completed, suggesting that he should be considered one of if not the favourite for the job.

The Latest: Don’t rule out other managers

Writing in his latest piece for Newcastle World, Kennedy has now revealed that Benitez and Gerrard could come into the thinking of the Tyneside outfit, although different problems would arise if an attempt to appoint either came to fruition.

Of course, they are both currently in jobs at the moment, with Benitez at Everton and Gerrard at Rangers respectively, but the former only took charge at Goodison Park in the summer and already has a huge connection with Tyneside.

Emery has previously gushed over what a ‘very good’ coach Benitez is, revealing he actually looks up to his compatriot as a reference point for his own career (Chronicle Live).

The Verdict: Benitez is the one

While Gerrard has no doubt done a great job at Ibrox, having led them to the Scottish Premiership title last season at the expense of their bitter rivals Celtic, he is relatively inexperienced as a manager, compared to someone like Benitez, who has more than 1000 games under his belt.

Thus, the job at the Toon, especially how big it is with regards to trying to keep them from getting relegated down to the Championship, may be too big for him at this stage in his managerial career.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

On the other hand, Benitez is still idolised by NUFC fans and players alike – Lewis Cass called him ‘amazing’ for the faith he shows in youngsters – after bringing them straight back up from the Championship in first place after relegation, and then finishing in the top half of the table in their first campaign back in the top flight (Transfermarkt).

He would certainly be a more popular and eye-catching appointment with the supporters, but it may also be very difficult to lure him away from the Toffees at this early stage of his time there.

Fabinho let Liverpool down against Manchester City

Liverpool managed to keep their Premier League unbeaten streak intact following their 2-2 draw against reigning champions Manchester City over the weekend.

Goals from Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah were cancelled out thanks to goals from Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne, resulting in the Reds dropping the lead twice and two points in the process in their latest league match ahead of the international break.

One player, in particular, that stood out for Liverpool on the day, but for all the wrong reasons, in our view, was Fabinho who played the full 90 minutes of the match in midfield alongside Curtis Jones and club captain Jordan Henderson.

From a defensive point of view, the Brazilian won just 25% of his ground duels (two out of eight), only made one tackle, lost possession on six occasions and was dribbled past five times. That ultimately earned himself a rather disappointing overall match rating of 5.9/10, the lowest rating of any Liverpool player on the day according to SofaScore.

What didn’t help was a glaring miss towards the end of the match too. With the goal at his mercy, the holding player had a chance to find the net but was tackled spectacularly well by Rodri.

Since joining the Merseyside club back in the 2018 summer transfer window from French club AS Monaco for a fee of £40.5m, the 27-year-old has been a reliable figure, however.

Currently earning a weekly wage of £180k-per-week according to Spotrac, he’s made a total of 130 appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side across all competitions. During that time he has managed to score four goals and provide eight assists along the way.

So far this season, Fabinho has made eight appearances for the Reds in all tournaments, scoring one goal and providing one assist in the process.

Despite his poor showing against Pep Guardiola’s side, we feel as if Klopp should continue selecting Fabinho in his starting XI for the remainder of the season wherever possible and just hope his underwhelming display against City was just a bad day at the office.

However, with Fabinho currently being the only Liverpool player that predominantly plays in the defensive-midfield position, we feel as though his place in the team would be safe enough anyway.

Yorkshire take low-scoring thriller

North Division

Low-scoring games can often be the best and Yorkshire squeezed to a two-wicket win against Durham at Headingley off the last ball in a match dominated by the bowlers. Deon Kruis scrambled the winning run after a crucial cameo by Tim Bresnan – overlooked for the ICC World Twenty20 – who was dropped by Mitchell Claydon when he lost the ball in the sun on the square-leg boundary. Chasing 117, the home side made a reasonable start as Andrew Gale and Anthony McGrath added 30 but then Durham made inroads. Michael Vaughan was run out backing up without facing and Ben Harmsion picked up two middle-order scalps. Durham had found batting equally tough, especially against Rana Naved who gave a superb display of death bowling as he conceded a total of three runs off the 16th and 18th overs.Lancashire maintained their unbeaten record with a comfortable 38-run win against Derbyshire at Old Trafford. An opening stand of 75 in 40 balls between Paul Horton and Tom Smith set them on their way with Horton hitting 41 off 20 deliveries. The innings was finished off strongly by Steven Croft and Ashwell Prince as they added 51. Derbyshire were never in the hunt as the Lancashire attack made an early mark and Sajid Mahmood claimed a key breakthrough when he removed the middle and off stumps of Chris Rogers. Mahmood finished with a career-best 4 for 29 to continue his impressive form.

Middlesex’s miserable Twenty20 campaign continued with another heavy defeat as they went down by 56 runs to Hampshire at Uxbridge to virtually end their hopes of retaining the title. The batting slumped to 125 all out as they chased a demanding 182 with Liam Dawson and Sean Ervine, who had a fine all-round game, sharing seven wickets. Dawson made the decisive incisions as he claimed three top-order scalps. Hampshire’s total was set-up by half-centuries from Michael Carberry (56) and Ervine (53 off 26 balls) as they added 79 for the third wicket. Ervine played the innings of the day as he struck four sixes to give the innings vital momentum.

Butt, Akmal and Afridi redeem themselves

Andrew McGlashan presents the Plays of the day from Lord’s

Andrew McGlashan at Lord's09-Jun-2009

With bat and with glove, Kamran Akmal had a field day•Getty Images

Sums of the day
The number-crunchers were hard at work before the game confirming what Netherlands needed to do to go through. The sums were made easier when Pakistan decided to bat first, because it meant there was a definitive point Netherlands had to reach to knock the Test nation out – chasing whatever target was set, they had to get within 24 runs. It made for the strange situation where the final target in the run chase wasn’t the important number, but ultimately it was a step to far for the underdogs.Commitment of the day
Despite failing to progress, Netherlands began the day in a position they barely have dreamed of before the tournament and showed from the first over that they were going to give it their all. Kamran Akmal, promoted to open, drove the fourth ball wide of mid-off and cut the fifth hard through backward point, but on both occasions a Dutch fielder flung himself to the ground as though his life depended on it and two fours became two twos. That sort of commitment in the field can be a lesson to others, not least Pakistan.Successful Australian of the day
As Australia skulk off to Leicester to lick there wounds the most impressive quick bowler from down under at this tournament was still on show. Dirk Nannes led from the front for the Dutch attack and with one delivery clocked over 150mph (93mph) – the quickest ball in the World Twenty20 to date. There is a feeling from some people back in Australia that he should have been in their squad, especially after a successful IPL, but he’s probably pleased to have played for a team that actually managed to win a game.Drop of the day…
Salman Butt’s fielding was so bad against England that Younis Khan said after the game that he might be dropped, and even though he survived the chop for this match his fielding was still a liability for Pakistan. When Alexie Kervezee top-edged Mohammad Aamer the ball flew high towards short fine-leg where Butt had been stationed (or should that be hidden) by his captain. He back-peddled to try and get under the chance, but never looked confident and the ball duly slipped through his grasp. That no-one was surprised told the story.…catch of the day
But then, something amazing happened. Peter Borren swept at Saeed Ajmal and again the top edge went high towards short fine-leg. Butt was still there – there aren’t many places to run to in Twenty20 – and the Pakistan team held its breath as the gentle catch came down towards his hands. It was a sitter by anyone’s standards, but remember who was underneath it. This time, though, the ball nestled safely in his grasp and Butt was mobbed by his team-mates. That, too, told a story.Spell of the day
Shahid Afridi can barely buy a run these days, but he’s have a golden period with the ball. However, it might be time to reclassify his style as a fast-medium legspinner because it was often his pace that proved too much for the Netherlands batsmen. His first delivery was a spearing yorker that demolished Bas Zuiderent’s off stump and his second wicket came when he skidded one into Tom de Grooth’s leg pole. Associate batsmen don’t see much of Afridi’s type of bowling and another quick yorker was too much for Daan van Bunge as he came down the pitch. But Netherlands need not be ashamed; Afridi has done it to many a batsman during his career.Glovework of the day
Akmal has copped his fair share of flak in recent years for some less-than-convincing efforts behind the stumps. But today he combined superbly with the spinners to pull off four stumpings and set a new record for the most in a Twenty20 international innings, which he previously held jointly with Tatenda Taibu. The pick of his success was the one to remove Ryan ten Doeschate, which required swift work to collect the yorker from Shoaib Malik and remove the bails. Now Pakistan have to improve the rest of their fielding.

West Ham fans bemoan Moyes injury update

A number of West Ham supporters have been showing their concern at an injury update provided by manager David Moyes, ahead of the clash with Everton.

The Hammers make a welcome return to Premier League action this weekend after the international break got in the way of domestic proceedings.

Moyes’ men make the trip to Everton on Sunday afternoon for what promises to be an interesting match-up between two sides with European aspirations.

It appears as though West Ham could be without some key figures for the game, however, if the manager’s latest comments are anything to go by.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference [via journalist Tom Clark on Twitter], Moyes admitted there are questions marks surrounding the fitness of several unspecified players, saying: ‘We might have some people not available.”

West Ham fans react to injury latest

These Hammers fans were not optimistic after hearing the update, taking to Twitter to provide their thoughts on what one supporter called ‘worrying’, while pondering whether the issue could be with Michail Antonio.

Pakistan A strike on a curtailed day

The opening day’s play of the first four-day Test between Sri Lanka A and Pakistan A was restricted to just 40 minutes due to rain at the Asgiriya International Stadium in Kandy. In that brief period, Sri Lanka A chose to bat first and scored 35 for the loss of Avishka Gunawardene, who was trapped in front by a full-toss by Najaf Shah for 6. Michael Vandort and Ian Daniel were unbeaten on 14 and 9 when bad light and then heavy rain put an end to the day’s proceedings.Play did not commence until 1.30pm because of excess moisture on the pitch, which was a result of the wicket being covered for two consecutive days due to rain. The outfield was in excellent shape, but the damp pitch meant that there was no play in the entire morning session. The Sri Lankans went into the match with seven specialist batsmen, a move which bordered on the defensive, but one which also spoke a lot about the uncertainty in their batting line-up. The move was probably caused by the fact that the team had a couple of part-time spinners in Russel Arnold and Jehan Mubarak, who could support Malinga Bandara, the specialist legspinner.Asgiriya has a history of rain-affected international matches and the early abandonment wasn’t unusual for the locals. Play is due to commence at 10am on the second day to partially make up for the lost time.

Man Utd: Lindelof endured first half shocker

Manchester United’s early form this season has hardly been ideal. It’s a puzzling situation for their Norwegian tactician, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

This summer, the Red Devils made three landmark acquisitions in Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho.

However, while the last two names watched on from the sidelines, Ronaldo was virtually a lone figure as well but his frustration was shown on the field of play, rather than from the comfort of a seat.

The Portuguese threw his arms about and took issue with his teammates for failing to make attacking runs throughout the opening half.

But his anger surely would have been directed at the defence too. After all, as Solskjaer’s men went into the half time break 2-0 down to Atalanta on Wednesday evening, it marked what was initially a horrible night.

At the time of writing (20.55 – 20th Nov), they are bottom of their European group and their defensive record is only getting worse.

According to Opta, United have failed to keep a clean sheet in 12 consecutive matches at Old Trafford. That happens to be their longest run since February 1964 – a mere 57 years.

That’s a rather bizarre statistic when you consider they have £80m Harry Maguire at the back. The Englishman has struggled with injury in recent weeks and his lack of sharpness shone through this evening in a woeful first half at the back.

He tried stepping up and setting an offside trap as the visitors scored their first goal. He wasn’t on the same wavelength as his fellow defenders and ultimately caused a vacant space for Mario Pasalic to score.

Maguire was then caught out for the second strike too with Merih Demiral beating him to the ball at a corner and finding the net with an excellent header.

Yet, he wasn’t the only culprit in a diabolical first half for United on Wednesday. The England international’s centre-back colleague in Victor Lindelof was also hopeless.

The Swede has never covered himself in too much glory since joining Man United and his display in the opening 45 minutes in midweek demonstrated why they brought Varane to the club over the summer.

He was caught in no man’s land down the left-hand side for the opening goal and was a poor presence from a physical point of view.

Lindelof contested just one defensive duel in the first 45 minutes but didn’t even win that as he lost 100% of the battles he competed in before the interval. Considering how under pressure they found themselves, not completing a single tackle or interception is an extremely poor record.

The defender was also successful with just 50% of his long balls forward.

If Solskjaer is going to have any hope of holding onto his job, his team will desperately need to improve. At the moment, they look like a side destined to head out of Europe’s major competition.
