Celtic must start unleashing Owen Moffat

Ange Postecoglou admitted last week that he felt he’d walked under a ladder after the start of his Celtic tenure.

Indeed, after the Hoops suffered more dropped points and yet another injury on Sunday, he’d have been wondering how many ladders had been placed in his way.

On the chalkboard

This is Celtic’s worst start to a campaign for 23-years and after an injury problem to Josip Juranovic, the issues are only mounting for Postecoglou.

The Bhoys only have ten points from their opening seven matches and barring a miracle, it would take a lot of work in order to regain the Premiership title.

Juranovic has now joined a plethora of other bodies on the treatment table with fellow defender Greg Taylor out alongside the likes of Callum McGregor, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Kyogo Furuhashi.

Now is the time for Celtic’s most experienced players to step up. You’re asking for Joe Hart to lead by example and for Tom Rogic to really grab the bull by the horns.

Sadly, the Australian’s performances have waned in recent weeks. He started the campaign in excellent form and looked a rejuvenated figure under Postecoglou following a goal against Dundee FC.

However, he’s now struggling to add impetus to the final third and he’s also losing the ball on a regular basis.

As Celtic laboured to a 1-1 draw with Dundee United this weekend, he was particularly poor. Rogic missed a golden opportunity that struck the woodwork, gave away possession 20 times and completed just 71% of his passes.

The solution

One simple remedy would be to withdraw Rogic from the starting XI for a period of games.

However, with Celtic’s injury list mounting, that’s easier said than done.

A way they could solve that issue is by looking into the B team and unleashing some of the young players who are set to star in the future.

Postecoglou hasn’t been shy to grant opportunities to young players with Dane Murray featuring in the Champions League a few weeks ago and Adam Montgomery now becoming a key part of the manager’s plans.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/check-out-the-latest-celtic-news-duffy-mccarthy-brady-knockaert” title= “Read the latest Celtic news!”]

Another teenager they should turn to is Owen Moffat.

The 19-year-old was on the bench against Dundee United last weekend and has been a rampant threat all season long for the B team.

Capable of playing out wide but also through the middle, Moffat is a mightily talented individual, someone who’d be prepared to offer more in the final third than his Australian colleague.

He has been among the goals already this season, finding the net five times in a 10-0 win over Vale of Leithen.

The youngster started that game on the flanks but moved centrally before catching the eye again.

At his age, versatility will be extremely important when it comes to breaking into the senior set-up.

He’s never made a first-team appearance but one can’t be far off after the acclaim he’s received in 2021/22.

Speaking during pre-season, skipper Callum McGregor commented: “A mention for young Moffat – his attitude has been first class. I remember watching him at the end of last season, training on the astro himself. Every day they would do finishing and I remember thinking: ‘He’s got a finish on him’.”

With Celtic stuttering, they will be lusting after the return of their injured stars. Though, for the time being, it’s surely worth exploring Moffat’s qualities in the first-team.

– Eu acho triste. Fico triste – reitera o camisa 9 do Glorioso.

Menos briga.

E a câmera identifica, marca você, o papai, a mamãe.

Hughes looks to Waugh for England advice

Phillip Hughes is about to depart for a six-week county stint with Middlesex that he hopes will prepare him for the Ashes

Twenty years ago the England attack was dismantled by a young Australian batsman who was a key figure in the Ashes returning to Australian hands and staying there for a decade and a half. Steve Waugh came of age on the 1989 trip to England and this month he has been handing out advice to another young man who Australia hope can do a similar job on this year’s tour: Phillip Hughes.By the time the 1989 Ashes came around, Waugh, 24, was already a veteran of 26 Tests but hadn’t scored a century. He made up for it by pillaging 393 runs before England managed to dismiss him for the first time. There is some argument that Hughes, 20, has already come of age at Test level despite his career being only three matches old.In his second Test, in Durban, he became the youngest player in history to score two centuries in a Test, knocking off George Headley’s 79-year-old record in the process. But facing quality swing bowlers in English conditions will be a vastly different challenge and Hughes is therefore thrilled to be flying out on Wednesday to start a six-week stint with Middlesex.”It will be a lot different, I haven’t played in those conditions before,” Hughes told Cricinfo this week. “We sat down a little while ago and had to decide between playing in the IPL or going to England. There’s three forms of the game and we had to decide which way to go. I haven’t played an Ashes before so with that coming up this was definitely the way to go.”Declining the chance for piles of money in the IPL was a mature decision for someone barely out of his teens but he had already displayed his level-headedness in his two seasons with New South Wales. He was so productive this summer that he won the Steve Waugh Medal in March as the state’s best player despite missing the final six weeks due to his Australia call-up.It was another trophy for Hughes to add to an already bulging cabinet after he collected the Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year Award in February. But the New South Wales awards ceremony gave him an extra bonus – the chance to speak to the man whose medal he won, a player who toured England four times for an average of 74.22.”At the Steve Waugh night I spoke to Steve Waugh about England,” Hughes said. “Definitely before I go there I’ll be getting around and talking to a few guys like Justin Langer and guys that’ve had success in all the conditions all around the world.”It’s a big one because England is very different conditions. The advice from Stevewas more to keep enjoying it and be yourself. He said it’s different conditions but the longer you’re there you’ll get to know them pretty well.”It’s exactly that fact that has frustrated the ECB over the past month. England’s national selector Geoff Miller was angry that counties had given opportunities to Australian players like Stuart Clark (Kent) and Hughes to adapt to the English environment for such a long period leading in to the Ashes. It will be particularly valuable for Hughes, who hasn’t played in England before. When the previous Ashes series began in Australia in 2006-07, Hughes was a 17-year-old who had just completed his high-school studies and was yet to find his way into the New South Wales side. He spent the summer watching on as Australia completed a 5-0 clean sweep.”Two, three years ago, you watch it on TV and now to get an opportunity to play alongside those guys is very exciting,” Hughes said. “It’s obviously one of the biggest series. Growing up as kids you hear the Ashes and want to play in that. Hopefully I’ll get an opportunity in the not too distant future so it’s very exciting.”He need not use the qualifier “hopefully”. He averaged 69.16 in his three Tests in South Africa and thrived in a baptism of fire in his debut in Johannesburg, where Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel peppered the 170-centimetre opener with short stuff.”It was the second best Test side in the world,” he said. “It was no doubt the best bowling attack I’ve ever faced. The likes of Steyn, Morkel, Ntini, they definitely came at me hard. When I’m out in the middle, bat versus ball, it’s a big contest that I like to get amongst. They had a lot to say and I’m happy with that. I thrive on that contest.”That desperation to be in the thick of the action has made it hard for Hughes to watch the one-day series from home but he knows his time will come in the shorter formats. In any case, it has given him the chance to get back home to Macksville in northern New South Wales to visit family and friends. That has allowed Hughes’ rapid rise to sink in.”Sometimes I do actually get up in the mornings and think how great it was [to make the centuries in Durban],” Hughes said. “I knew it was going to be tough. But at the end of the day it was only one game of cricket, I’m not one to drop pressure on myself. Now the biggest thing is I want to keep going and keep enjoying this.”He has six weeks to enjoy things before the Ashes. And if he wants to frighten a few Englishmen with long memories, he could do worse than flashing that Steve Waugh Medal about.

Gibbs hundred hands series to South Africa

South Africa began the series as the world’s No. 1 ODI side and they will finish it in the same position after Herschelle Gibbs’ 21st one-day international century helped them take an unassailable 3-1 lead

Herschelle Gibbs made his 21st ODI century•Associated PressSouth Africa began the series as the world’s No. 1 ODI side and they will finish it in the same position after Herschelle Gibbs’ 21st one-day international century helped them to an unassailable 3-1 series lead in Port Elizabeth. Gibbs’s near-even time innings of 110 repaid the faith placed in him by South Africa after a stint in rehab late last year, propelling them to a commanding 317 for 6. Australia, who again battled against the spin of Roelof van der Merwe, were seldom in the hunt. The 61-run victory ensured Graeme Smith’s men the honour of becoming the first team to triumph in three successive bilateral ODI series against Australia – a streak that dates back to their historic victory in the 438 match in Johannesburg three years ago. It also means that when the teams return to the Wanderers for Friday’s fifth and final match, it will be to contest a dead rubber. An out-of-form Australia were always likely to be on the back foot in Port Elizabeth and they took a couple of gambles by sending South Africa in and choosing Shane Harwood, who was their third oldest ODI debutant of all time. The former punt looked increasingly ill-advised throughout the morning session, as powerful innings from Gibbs and AB de Villiers, who made 84 from 74 deliveries, ensured a hefty total that left Australia little margin for error in their ensuing run chase. For a while, they were faultless. Brad Haddin and Michael Clarke clicked as a combination for the first time in the series in a 129-run stand – the highest opening partnership in ODIs at the venue. But when both men fell shortly before the halfway mark, the faultlines appeared and South Africa regained their grip on the match. After Gibbs, at 35, had earlier proved he still had much to offer to ODI cricket, it was a man at the opposite end of his career who led South Africa’s bowling effort.Van der Merwe was playing just his third one-day international and, after collecting three wickets in the Cape Town win, again troubled the middle order to finish with 3 for 46. Clarke (50) played the wrong line and was bowled and van der Merwe quickly added Callum Ferguson and Michael Hussey in a five-over period that completely altered the game.Haddin’s aggressive approach imbued Australia with hope and he batted instinctively in compiling 78 from 61 balls, including four sixes. But after he holed out to long-on off Johan Botha it was a steady decline for Australia and the tail succumbed to Dale Steyn, who finished with 4 for 44. The chase was always going to be difficult after Gibbs and de Villiers dominated with the bat. They kept the scoreboard moving at better than a run a ball during their 136-run third-wicket partnership and, not for the first time this series, Australia’s bowlers failed to offer any real threat through the middle overs. The biggest worry was the spin combination of Nathan Hauritz and Clarke, who between them sent down ten overs for 73.Both men suffered at the hands of Gibbs, who posted his first ODI century in 14 months – the most recent had come against West Indies in Johannesburg last February. Gibbs dispatched both slow bowlers into the stands and de Villiers sent consecutive Hauritz deliveries over the long-on and midwicket boundaries as he became the aggressor in the partnership.Nathan Bracken also came in for some rough treatment and his ten overs cost 64 as the South Africans advanced at him with little fear. Gibbs attacked Bracken early with a pair of boundaries, including a slap over long-on after advancing down the pitch, and also took to Johnson with a slash forward of point. It was an innings that alternated between frenetic and controlled and, on the whole, Gibbs waited for his opportunities in a composed effort. His hundred came from 106 deliveries with a clip for two off Harwood, who at 35 is the same age as Gibbs, yet was making his debut. Harwood won his spot because of a fractured foot suffered by Brett Geeves during the loss in Cape Town.He was plucked from his Rajasthan Royals training camp and was preferred to Ben Laughlin as an attacking option. So last-minute was the selection that Harwood wore Marcus North’s shirt when he became the third oldest Australian, after Bob Simpson and Bob Holland, to make his ODI debut. He collected 2 for 57 – his wickets were JP Duminy from the last ball of the innings and Jacques Kallis – but like all his colleagues it was too difficult to contain Gibbs and de Villiers. Gibbs was the centurion but de Villiers was every bit as important to his team’s triumph. He went after the spinners, swept effectively and continued a brilliant run of form – he has averaged 65.50 in his eight ODIs against AustraliaNot surprisingly, his team enjoyed success over the same period. Over the past three months the ODI scoreline reads: South Africa 7, Australia 2. It’s only fitting that South Africa remain the No. 1 ranked team in the world. They have earned it.

Insider drops Bowen claim in West Ham boost

Speaking to Football Insider, rival ‘insider’ John Wenham has dropped a claim on Jarrod Bowen – with David Moyes gifted a big West Ham United boost.

The Lowdown: Bowen a wanted man…

As per The Independent, Moyes may have to be wary of his biggest rivals swooping for Bowen as scouts from Tottenham, Liverpool and Leicester all keep tracking the winger.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Amid his electric start to the season, it appears he is already attracting admirers and the last thing West Ham need is to lose a forward option without a recognised back-up striker.

However, in reaction to this news, a Spurs insider has appeared to alleviate fears that his side could make a move for Bowen.

The Latest: Insider drops possible Moyes boost…

As per Lilywhites ‘insider’ John Wenham, speaking to FI, it appears Moyes and West Ham may not have to worry about losing the forward to one of their biggest London rivals.

“Tottenham and West Ham don’t do business. There is no love lost between the two clubs at boardroom level,” he explained.

“I don’t see West Ham entertaining any bids for Bowen from Tottenham, that one is a non-starter.

“Tottenham may be interested in him but some clubs just don’t do business.

“I would categorically rule that one out now. Even if West Ham said he was available they would turn down an approach from Tottenham.

“From what I’ve heard from people I know in the industry, I just can’t see that one happening.”

The Verdict: Big boost for Moyes?

Moyes having to watch GSB sell to a rival like Spurs would have left a bitter taste, so this news comes as a breath of fresh air.

The 24-year-old has, arguably, been one of West Ham’s players of the season so far alongside star striker Michail Antonio.

No Irons man has averaged more completed dribbles (3) or key passes per 90 (2.4) in the Premier League according to WhoScored, and if he continues this streak he could be a very key player this year.

Worn down Hussey won't play in IPL

Michael Hussey had an uncomfortable time in the six Tests against South Africa © AFP

Michael Hussey will become the latest Australian to withdraw from this year’s IPL in an effort to reinvigorate himself ahead of the Ashes. Hussey is one of only two Australians, along with Brad Haddin, to have played in all 12 Tests and 10 one-day internationals since last year’s tour of India, and was due to join the Chennai Super Kings after the limited-overs series against Pakistan next month.Hussey is mired in the deepest trough of his international career – he reached 50 once in the six Tests against South Africa – and is desperate to rediscover peak form in time for the Ashes. In addition to the IPL, he is also believed to be considering standing down from Australia’s six matches against Pakistan in the United Arab Emirates as he seeks to rejuvenate both body and mind.He could have travelled to South Africa for the last fortnight of the IPL, but will instead follow the lead of his national captain, Ricky Ponting, in standing down. Mitchell Johnson and Michael Clarke did not nominate for the 2009 IPL auction, citing their desire to focus on international cricket.”We havent got any official intimation from Hussey yet,” VB Chandrasekhar, the Super Kings’ cricket operations director, told . “It’s a big disappointment for us, but we have got to respect his need to take rest. No doubt, we will miss him a lot. He was expected to play from the ninth game onwards and play a crucial role. [Andrew] Flintoff leaves by then and we thought, even if the bowling gets weakened a bit, our batting would have got stronger.”In the IPL’s inaugural season, Hussey posted the tournament’s third highest score (116 not out) and the fourth highest batting average (84.00) in his four-game stint for the Super Kings. But he has struggled for form of late, averaging just 23.00 in eight Tests since the start of the Australian summer.”I just spoke to the franchise and asked for the time off to be with family as my playing schedule has been very busy and they were very understanding,” Hussey told AAP. “But I am available if we make the semi-finals [on May 22 and 23] and final.”

Spurs fired Wilson warning

Frank McAvennie believes that Tottenham could be in trouble if Callum Wilson is available for Newcastle ahead of the meeting between the two sides next weekend.

The Lowdown: Wilson could be fit

The 29-year-old started the season in top form for the Magpies, scoring twice in the first three Premier League games (Transfermarkt).

However, since the 2-2 draw at Southampton in late August, he has not played a minute in any competition due to a hamstring injury, but it is being reported that the striker could be available to face Spurs once domestic football returns following the end of the current international break.

The Latest: McAvennie fires Spurs warning

Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League striker McAvennie has urged Spurs to be vigilant if Wilson is available for Newcastle. He said:

“If he’s back, that’s massive, that’s the game Wilson wants to play in.

“He is going to be up against a pretty poor Tottenham defence and he is a striker who will punish you if you slip up.

“Me, as a striker, I would play against that defence all day long and twice on Sunday.

“It doesn’t matter, if you come up against a striker who knows how to pull you about and create space, you’re in trouble.

“If Newcastle are on it, which they should be, any ball over the top will have Eric Dier scrambling.

“Wilson will fancy that I’m sure. He loves scoring and he has a great chance to get a couple in my opinion.”

The Verdict: Difficult task

Spurs have not been in the best form this season, losing three of their first seven Premier League matches (Sky Sports). However, they are doing considerably better than the Magpies, who are without a win in any competition this term. The Tynesiders may have been taken over by a Saudi Arabian consortium in recent days, but they will not be able to spend any of the money now at their disposal until January (BBC).

Newcastle’s leading scorer last season with 12 goals, £19.8m-valued Wilson (Transfermarkt) is the best striker at Steve Bruce’s disposal right now, and having the England international available would provide his team with a massive boost. Spurs have conceded 10 goals in the Premier League already, so Nuno Espirito Santo and his team could indeed be in for a challenging Sunday afternoon if the 29-year-old is fit to feature for the visit of the north Londoners to St James’ Park.

In other news, Jose Mourinho’s stance on this Tottenham midfielder has been praised.

Newcastle could sign a Longstaff upgrade in Swift

Newcastle United could sign a major upgrade on Sean Longstaff in Reading star John Swift.

What’s the story?

The Magpies had yet another fairly quiet transfer window in the summer, with the only notable arrival being Joe Willock on a permanent deal from fellow Premier League side Arsenal.

Now, Football League World have claimed that Steve Bruce’s side, along with the likes of Aston Villa and Sheffield United, among others, are all keeping a close eye on Swift’s situation with the Royals.

The report adds that with the midfielder entering the final 12 months of his contract, and having currently been unable to reach an agreement over a new deal, that has alerted clubs over his potential availability.

He’s better than Longstaff

The Reading ace has a track record of being someone who can offer a goal-scoring threat from the middle of the park, managing 58 goal contributions in 171 games for the club – in fact, his start to this season has been quite incredible, netting seven in seven in the Championship as well as chipping in with three assists too.

Speaking back in August after a 2-1 win over Preston, Royals manager, Veljko Paunovic, said: “Now he’s back, it is important we keep him healthy and motivated as he is now because that will help us a lot.

“He is super talented and he showed an urgency that he wanted to decide the game. The first couple of passes to Azeez and Joao were fantastic vision and execution of the final pass – something we’ve missed in the past. We missed those slick combinations through the middle when we progress forward so that’s something we have to keep up.”

In contrast, Longstaff has endured a bit of a nightmare since his breakthrough at St James’ Park, and offers nothing of the kind of goal-scoring ability that Swift possesses.

It was another difficult season at St James’ Park for Longstaff last term, with the midfielder making just 22 appearances in the Premier League, and enduring a really hard spell in the early months of the new year, either being named on the bench or missing out on the match-day squad completely.

And when you look at his stats, it’s difficult to see just where the Geordie ace really fits into this side under Bruce.

As per Whoscored, he averaged just 1.4 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game in the Premier League last season, while his numbers going forward were equally unimpressive – he didn’t average over one shot, key pass or dribble per match, while his average rating of 6.36 was the third-worst of any Newcastle player who started more than ten games.

He’s managed just four goals and four assists in 75 games in all competitions for Newcastle’s senior side, while after averaging a match rating of 6.87 in his breakthrough 2018/2019 campaign, that has fallen to 6.37 and 6.36 in the following seasons.

The £3.6m-rated Swift could be the exciting Longstaff upgrade Newcastle need in the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, this Newcastle star was just as good as Saint-Maximin vs Leeds…
