Man Utd transfer update on Trippier

Many Manchester United fans have been left to buzz as a transfer update emerged on Kieran Trippier.

As per The Daily Telegraph, the Atletico Madrid right-back is desperate for a return to the Premier League in the summer window and is waiting to see if the Old Trafford faithful make a new bid for him.

Two other clubs in the top flight have shown an interest in signing Trippier, but his preference is to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.

The England international would be an upgrade on Aaron Wan-Bissaka in an attacking sense, having made more assists and averaged more key passes (1.2), crosses (1.2) and long balls (2.4) per game in their respective domestic leagues during the 2020/21 season (Whoscored).

Trippier already knows English football well too having played for both Burnley and Tottenham Hotspur previously, and at 28, he is of a good age to make one final big move in his footballing career.

-Hoje o Zé Roberto mostrou a cara dele (risos).

Arsenal transfer update on Maddison

Many Arsenal fans have been left buzzing as a transfer update emerged on James Maddison.

Speaking to The Football Terrace, football journalist and transfer expert Pete O’Rourke has claimed (via LTArsenal):

“Maddison, this one is gathering pace. Arsenal are growing ever more confident that there is a possibility of a deal happening. Encouragement from both sides – representatives and a bit from Leicester City too. Player fancies move to Arsenal.”

The North London club are looking to recruit a new attacking midfield player to the Emirates Stadium, following the departure of Martin Odegaard back to Real Madrid after his loan spell ended.

Maddison could well fit the bill, having notched up a very impressive 11 goals and a further 10 assists in 41 games in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt).

Comparing his stats in the Premier League to Odegaard in the last term, the Englishman averaged more shots (2.4) and key passes (1.6) per match (Whoscored), and thus could certainly be an upgrade for Mikel Arteta.

Nonetheless, taking him off the hands of the Foxes, who will be playing European football this campaign unlike the Gunners, would certainly be a statement signing.

Newcastle fans urged to forget takeover

Newcastle United fans have been urged to forget about the potential takeover at St James’ Park by former Toon star John Barnes.

The Lowdown: Newcastle takeover case

The arbitration case between the St. James’ Park faithful and the Premier League over the failed takeover deal between Mike Ashley and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group is set to take place over the coming months, and the results could be pivotal in terms of the direction of where the bid is heading.

Amanda Staveley, who is a member of the consortium, has spoken to Sky Sports referencing a letter that she wrote urging both the UK government and football regulators to ensure that the arbitration process is to be made public in order to give more transparency over the whole saga.

The Latest: Barnes on takeover

Speaking in a recent interview (via The Chronicle), former Magpies winger Barnes has urged supporters of the Toon Army to stop thinking about the potential takeover, and believes that Steve Bruce is the right man to take the North East club forward:

“A takeover would be a turning point for any club if someone comes in with loads of money.

“They’ve been talking about a takeover for many years and it hasn’t happened, so they have to stop thinking about a takeover.

“If it does happen, they can assess it then, but they can’t look too far into the future.

“Steve Bruce is the right man to take them forward and what they need is harmony.

“They need togetherness until the club is sold.

“They have to support the manager.

“If they keep having problems and fans are booing, that’s not going to help the players and the manager.

“As much as they have their reasons for not liking the owner, that is not going to help the club.

“Until he (Ashley) sells, support them.

“When you’re there for 90 minutes, support the team.”

The Verdict: Do not give up

Although the Tyneside club’s main focus should of course be how to best prepare themselves for the new 2021/22 season ahead, Ashley should not give up on trying to secure the takeover.

The arbitration hearing could well go in his favour, and a positive result could speed up the whole takeover process.

In terms of backing Bruce as the manager, the majority of the fanbase seemingly do not see him as the man to take them forward, with as many as 97% wanting the former Aston Villa and Sunderland boss to be sacked in a poll back in March.

The owners-in-waiting may want to go for their own coach anyway to take NUFC into a new era, and so it is difficult to see Bruce keeping his job if a takeover happens.

Johnson stays with Queensland despite move

Mitchell Johnson will remain a Queensland player despite his decision to move from Brisbane to Perth. Johnson is keen to live in Western Australia to be closer to his partner Jessica Bratich, a Perth-based karate champion, but he did not want to switch to the Warriors.Queensland Cricket has agreed to the move, which leaves Johnson in a similar position to his Australia captain Ricky Ponting, who lives in Sydney but plays for Tasmania when not required for international duty. Johnson will probably have less state responsibilities in coming seasons as he is a first-choice player in the Test and ODI side and he believes the arrangement will be workable.”I’m really pleased we’ve been able to reach this outcome,” Johnson said. “I’m looking forward to the move to Perth but didn’t want to cut my ties with the Bulls. I’m confident the arrangement will be beneficial for both parties.”Trevor Barsby, the Queensland coach, said there was no reason Johnson had to live in Brisbane to remain a Bulls player. “We spoke to the players about it and they were very open to the idea,” Barsby said. “As Andy Bichel pointed out, we are in a highly professional era that brings with it different issues, and we should support our international players the best we can. Mitch can bunk down at my place for the week before a game if he happens to come back.”Graham Dixon, the CEO of Queensland Cricket, said Johnson had informed the state of his intention to move and discussed with them the possibility of occasional commutes across the country. Dixon said there was no way Queensland wanted to lose Johnson.”He is a Queenslander through and through,” Dixon said. “Having come through our development system, he is a most popular player within our organisation and we certainly want to keep him in the maroon cap whenever possible. We anticipate we would still see Mitchell on a semi-regular basis because he has close family ties in Townsville, and we are happy to go with the long-distance relationship.”

Blast from the past Davis into action against Northern Districts

Heath Davis, the former New Zealand fast bowler who last appeared in first-class cricket in the summer of 1998/99, will return to the Auckland side for their season opener against Northern Districts starting in Gisborne on Friday.Davis, one of the fastest bowlers in the modern era, has been something of an enigma during his career but gets his chance with injury suffered by Gareth Shaw.Davis, took 200 first-class wickets, mainly for Wellington, at an average of 31.12. Recent form for Cornwall in the Auckland club competition has been behind his recall.Another change was forced on Auckland with the withdrawal of Andre Adams after he was suspended following an incident in club cricket last weekend. His place is taken by left-armer Richard Morgan. The Auckland team is: Brooke Walker (captain), Tama Canning, Heath Davis, Matt Horne, Rob Nicol, Tim McIntosh, Kyle Mills, Richard Morgan, Craig Pryor, Mark Richardson, Lou Vincent, Reece Young.

West Brom weighing up Adam Reach move

West Bromwich Albion are considering a move which would bring Adam Reach to The Hawthorns this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by the Express & Star, who claimed that Valerien Ismael is weighing up a move for the former Sheffield Wednesday midfielder, who is a free agent following his departure from Hillsborough upon the expiry of his contract with the Owls at the end of last season.

The report added that Blackburn Rovers are also keeping a close eye on the situation of the 28-year-old ahead of a potential move this summer, while it is claimed that the former England under-20 international is one of several targets being monitored by the Baggies.

Reach could transform West Brom

While Reach may not be the most headline-grabbing transfer Ismael could get over the line at West Brom this summer, the possible addition of the midfielder could easily be viewed as a key signing in the club’s transformation under the Frenchman’s leadership.

With the 45-year-old often deploying a 3-4-2-1 in his time at Barnsley, and with the 28-year-old being adept at playing left-back, left midfield and left-wing, Reach could well become an important player for Ismael as a result of his versatility, as well as his consistently impressive level of Championship performances.

Indeed, over his 44 appearances in the division for Darren Moore’s side last term, the £2.52m-rated man bagged five goals, provided three assists and created five big chances for his teammates, taking 1.3 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The £23k-per-week midfielder also helped out for his team defensively, averaging 0.9 interceptions, one tackle and one clearance and winning 2.8 duels per match.

These returns saw the man who George Elek dubbed a “creative” player earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.82, ranking him as the Owls’ sixth-best player in the league last term.

With West Brom currently only having Conor Townsend as a viable option for the left-back slot, it is evident that greater depth is required ahead of an arduous Championship season.

As such, Reach could well prove to be a very astute signing for Albion this season, and one who could help transform West Brom into a quintessential Valerien Ismael side.

Sam Lienert18-Oct-2002ADELAIDE, Oct 18 AAP – A discarded Victorian spinner, a rookie who had taken just two previous first-class wickets and an occasional medium pacer today bowled South Australia to the first outright victory of the Pura Cup season, against Victoria at Adelaide Oval. The Bushrangers were out for 303 in their second innings shortly before the scheduled final day tea break, giving SA a 208-run outright win after Victoria had taken first innings points.Victoria, which trailed SA by 511 runs heading into its second innings, started today at 2-94 and never looked likely to save the game, losing four wickets in the opening session, and another four in the second session.All-rounder Ian Harvey top-scored with an unbeaten 63 and Darren Berry made 52.Ex-Victorian off-spinner John Davison, in his first match for SA, was the chief destroyer.Having not made the Bushrangers’ side in either form of the game last season, Davison showed he still had plenty to offer at first-class level, taking 4-107.His wickets included the key scalps of Victorian openers Matthew Elliott (21) and Jason Arnberger (42) yesterday, as well as the prize wicket of Brad Hodge (22) today, the first three Bushrangers to fall.Davison, 32, joined SA this season after failing to earn a place in the Victorian side since the 2000/01 Pura Cup final, which Victoria lost to Queensland.Paceman Ryan Harris, who had played just two previous Pura Cup matches for his state and taken only two first-class wickets, finished today with 3-64.And all-rounder Ben Johnson, who top-scored with 165 in SA’s second innings, took the final three wickets of the match, finishing with 3-4 from just three overs after being introduced for the first time in the 100th over of Victoria’s innings.Johnson was named man of the match.SA skipper Greg Blewett said he was pleased with the number of players who made vital contributions, particularly Davison and ex-NSW recruit Mark Higgs, who made a second-innings century, and all-rounder Michael Miller, who took seven first-innings wickets after not playing a game last year.”It was just a great team effort, just about everyone did something,” Blewett said.”I’m particularly pleased with Davo, the first three wickets against his old side, I’m sure he would have been pretty rapt with that.”We haven’t had an off-spinner here for quite a few years, so he’s certainly a handy recruit.”Victorian acting skipper Elliott resigned from the role after the loss.Elliott, who was officially the team’s vice captain under Shane Warne but would have led the side in most matches given Warne’s commitments with the Australian team, handed over the reins to former skipper Berry for the rest of the season.Elliott said he felt the captaincy affected his batting.”It’s certainly not a reflection of what’s going on with the team, it’s an exciting time for us with all the people we’ve got involved, it’s just that I feel like I’m not putting my best playing foot forward,” he said.

Paul Stirling, with 20, initially gave the momentum to Ireland’s innings, before Botha, first with Reinhardt Strydom (30 off 32) and then Trent Johnston (21 off 10) went into attack-mode. The most successful bowler for Bangladesh was Naeem Islam, who picked up three wickets, including that of Strydom, with his offspin.Bangladesh had a disastrous start to their chase when they lost Imrul Kayash on the second ball, done in by a direct hit from Stirling. The middle order then faltered against the seamers, Fourie, Botha and Johnston, who took a wicket apiece. They were also hampered by two more run outs – those of Siddique (from a direct hit from Andrew Poynter) and Suhrawadi Shuvo. Bangladesh had fallen to 66 for 6 by the 12th over, after which Kyle McCallan hastened their end with three quick wickets.
