Decisions to be made: Smith admits to Aston Villa dilemma

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has admitted that the return of Axel Tuanzebe from injury will give him a dilemma due to the amount of loan players in the squad.

Tuanzebe – on loan at Villa from Manchester United – has declared himself fit to return after overcoming the foot injury which has sidelined him since December.

Only five loan players are permitted in each matchday squad, though, and Tom Carroll, Kortney Hause, Tyrone Mings, Tammy Abraham and Anwar El Ghazi are also all on loan with the Championship side this season.

It seems likely that Tuanzebe will return to the starting XI against Blackburn Rovers after the international break, with Carroll the likeliest to miss out.

Smith, however, has conceded that he now has a big decision to make.

Smith told Villa’s official website:

“Axel gives me not only a selection headache, but a loan headache. You’re only allowed five in the matchday 18.

“One will have to miss out – I have Axel, Tom Carroll, Hause, Mings, Tammy Abraham and Anwar El Ghazi. That’s a decision I’ve got to make.”

Villa have won each of their last four in the Championship to move into sixth position in the division.

Smith’s side are next in action at home to Blackburn on March 30, before travelling to Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United at the start of next month.

Manchester United: Pursuing Jadon Sancho is a total mistake

As great as he is, signing Dortmund wonderkid Jadon Sancho is a mistake Manchester United should not be making.

The story of former Manchester City man Jadon Sancho is incredible, and we all know it.

The boy who never got his chance in the Premier League turned world-class talent by a simple sprinkling of faith of guidance from Borussia Dortmund.

If anything, the Sancho saga highlights the inherent problems faced by those climbing up the youth ladder in our country; the concern that money in modern football, and investment in excitement foreign talent, is squandering opportunities for our youngest prodigies.

Now, ironically, it is Premier League money that is anticipated to bring one of best young players back to the country.

According to The Sun, Solskjaer has identified a big-name winger as his priority next season – but is this the right choice given how weak they are in other areas?

Most likely not. From a financial and corporate perspective we understand the need for global clubs to sign renowned quality to maintain their profile, and Jadon Sancho fits comfortably into that model. But from a footballing perspective, we struggle to find any suitable justification for their interest.

Ask any United fan and they will tell you that the defence needs improving by at least three new signings.

Think: Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelöf have been decent enough this season, but they do not scream Manchester United starters to us; Antonio Valencia is due to end his 10-year stint at the club, whilst Ashley Young is getting too old and Dalot is developing.

Just a brief scan of the United team’s line-up reveals just how obviously top-heavy they are, and surely Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is just as aware as every single fan in the world of that fact.

Of course, a new forward would not be scorned – just as long it is not at the expense of a world-class defender.

Manchester United fans, would you prefer to spend the Sancho money elsewhere? Let us know in the comments below…

Newcastle fans lavish praise on Salomon Rondon

[ad_pod ]

Salomon Rondon was on the scoresheet as Newcastle United recorded a 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The goal was Rondon’s seventh in the league this season and there is no question that he has been a success since arriving on loan from West Bromwich Albion.

The Magpies will be keen to sign the 29-year-old on a permanent deal at the end of the 2018-19 campaign.

However, they will surely not be the only ones, with Rondon proving this season – and indeed last – that he is capable of operating at this level of football.

Rondon took to social media in the aftermath of the Huddersfield result, which led to a number of Newcastle fans lavishing praise on the forward.

Indeed, many urged the South American to join the club on a permanent deal at the end of the campaign, whilst others simply hailed the summer arrival.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Aston Villa fans heap praise on El Ghazi after stunning assist

[ad_pod ]Loads of Aston Villa fans have been running the rule over Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Stoke City, and they’re delighted with Anwar El Ghazi.January signings Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause were both very impressive as the Villans came from behind to get a point on Saturday afternoon, but it was one of the summer captures that really stole the show.Dean Smith’s side fell behind in the first half when Sam Vokes smartly back-heeled a Sam Clucas cross past Jed Steer, and the performance was really poor before the interval. While the arrival of Smith certainly hasn’t helped the defence, he has instilled a never-say-die attitude in the squad, and they were far better in the second half.El Ghazi has managed just four goals and three assists so far this season, but he produced a moment of pure brilliance to make the equalising goal, sprinting past several Stoke defenders before drilling a smart ball for Albert Adomah to finish.

You can find some of the best Twitter reactions down below, where fans are full of praise for the 23 year-old loan signing…

Man Utd, Bayern Munich or Chelsea – who needs serial-winner Zinedine Zidane in the dugout most? Ranking Frenchman's options as former Real Madrid boss eyes a return to management

Zidane seems to be keen to get back into the game and there's plenty of options for him

A movie premiere is not the most likely place for the starting pistol to be fired on an almighty managerial tug of war. But at the recent maiden screening of a documentary charting the career of former Italy and Juventus boss Marcello Lippi, Zinedine Zidane's seven words to a reporter did exactly that.

"I'd certainly like to return to the bench," the legendary Frenchman said – and it appears that several top clubs across the continent were listening. That Zidane was speaking within the context of that prospective job coming in Italy didn't matter. In the hours and days that followed his comment, news feeds were flooded with stories linking Zidane with a string of the continent's best-known sides.

This is not the first time his name has been mentioned for the biggest jobs, of course. Since leaving his beloved Real Madrid for a second time in 2021, Zidane has had the pick of a whole host of different roles. However, up to now, he has proved to be an extremely discerning customer, turning down some truly massive opportunities after the projects failed to enthuse him.

    Biding his time

For instance, Zidane has reportedly been considered by Manchester United twice previously, once back in 2019 when Jose Mourinho's time was coming to an end, and then more recently in 2021 before Ralf Rangnick was chosen as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's interim replacement.

Juventus were also sniffing around when Andrea Pirlo departed, eventually opting to rehire Max Allegri, who has endured a topsy-turvy time in Turin ever since. Paris Saint-Germain have been among his other suitors, with links most prominent when it became evident that Christophe Galtier would be sacked towards the end of last season. Again though, Zidane kept his distance and Luis Enrique instead landed French football's top job.

It's not just been club roles either. The USMNT are understood to have sounded out the 51 year old when Gregg Berhalter spent a period under investigation. Zidane showed little willing to head Stateside, however, even with the promise of leading the Stars and Stripes at a home World Cup in 2026.

The France dream is dead – for now

In fact, despite all of the rumours, there's only been one job that Zidane has ever felt close to taking since his Madrid exit. When France lost in the 2022 World Cup final, it was unclear whether Didier Deschamps would stay on as Les Bleus boss. This led to Zidane's name being floated for the job, amid criticism of Deschamps' perceived negative team selection.

Then, with the dust still settling on France's dramatic defeat in Qatar, it was confirmed that the manager had extended his deal until 2026. This was obviously disappointing from Zidane's perspective, but the issue soon snowballed into a full-on national crisis thanks to then-French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet.

Speaking to RMC Sport at the time, the 82 year old said: "Did Zidane tried to reach me? Certainly not, I wouldn't even have picked up the phone anyway." He added: "I've never met him, we never considered parting with Didier."

His dismissive comments attracted widespread outroar, with Kylian Mbappe telling him not to "disrespect the legend like that", while French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera also chimed in. Le Graet attempted to wriggle off the hook with an apology, but it was no use. A few months earlier, his position had been weakened by an expose in a French outlet So Foot, which included accusations of sexual harassment and inappropriate workplace behaviour at FFF, and the president would tender his resignation in February 2023.

Criticism of Zidane was the straw that broke the camel's back, which is telling for just how highly the 1998 World Cup hero is regarded in France. However, with Deschamps still in charge, his dream of managing his national team anytime soon is dead. The situation may change if Les Bleus implode at the Euros this summer, but Zidane's recent comments suggest he is tired of waiting and would be amenable to re-entering the club game if the right opportunity emerged.

The perfect man for Real Madrid

And it's little surprise that so many top sides would be willing to offer him that route back to the dugout. That Zidane remains so highly regarded after an unusually long break is testament of the quite incredible job he did during his first spell at the Santiago Bernabeu. Airlifted in from the club's second team to pick up the wreckage left by Rafa Benitez's ill-fated spell in charge, just a few months later he had led Los Blancos to the Champions League final, where they edged out bitter rivals Atletico Madrid at San Siro.

And the trophies just kept on coming thereafter. The following campaign, Madrid won La Liga, the Club World Cup and the Champions League, with Zidane adding a ridiculous, third-straight European Cup to his collection during the 2017-18 campaign. He left shortly after, insisting the club needed a "change" to push on, but he wasn't away for long.

Following failed stints from Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari, Madrid put up the Zidane beacon again in March 2019. This time he was tasked with essentially rebuilding the team following Cristiano Ronaldo's departure and La Liga glory was savoured in his first full season in charge. That title tilt was built on a measly defence and the goals of Karim Benzema, but the 2020-21 campaign was less magical, as Los Blancos failed to lift a single piece of silverware.

Despite still being under contract until 2022, Zidane left at the end of that season, somewhat acrimoniously. An open letter to fans read: "Right now, things are different… I’m leaving because I feel the club no longer has the faith in me I need, nor the support to build something in the medium or long term."

    Bayern Munich are interested

Zidane wasn't the first coach to be ground down by life under the ever-demanding Florentino Perez, but if he is truly refreshed and ready to go again, he will have no shortage of offers this summer. One club understood to be interested is Bayern Munich, following the news that Thomas Tuchel will be departing at the end of the season.

News of the ex-Chelsea boss' exit wasn't surprising. Die Roten currently trail Xabi Alonso's exceptional Bayer Leverkusen by eight points in the Bundesliga title race while their Champions League prospects hang by a thread following a disappointing last-16 first-leg defeat to Lazio.

In typically Bayern fashion – who have made a habit of hoovering up talent from their German rivals – Alonso is thought to be their No.1 choice. But with Liverpool pushing hard to snap up the Spaniard too, Zidane has emerged as another option.

His hire would make a good deal of sense. Bayern's dressing room dynamics are a mess right now, with pro and anti Tuchel factions apparently emerging. This echos a wider pattern of intersquad discord over the past few seasons, with Leroy Sane and Sadio Mane even coming to blows after a Champions League game last season, raising concerns that the infamous FC Hollywood days are returning to Bavaria.

Zidane showed during his time at Madrid that one of his key assets is handling egos. Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and countess other big-name players only have good things to say about the Frenchman, and when they were at the peak of their powers his side's exuded an aura.

It was this mentality – created by Zidane – that carried them to the majority of their success. He's not a 'philosophy coach' like Pep Guardiola or Roberto De Zerbi. He's tactically flexible, with his greatest strength instead being ensuring the psychological dynamics of the team are elite.

After experiencing issues with two such blue-sky thinking managers – Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann – in the recent past, turning to Zidane would seem to make sense for Bayern.

Lionel Messi: The greatest free-kick taker of all-time?

GOAL takes a look at the Inter Miami star's latest free-kicks and where he ranks among the best to do it

It felt like a moment of destiny, one that few players other than Lionel Messi have been able to conjure up quite so often. There he was, the player seen by many as the greatest of all-time, standing over the ball in another big moment. On his Inter Miami debut, his true introduction to North America, Messi buried a free-kick in the last minute to seal a win for his club in their first Leagues Cup match.

A moment of destiny, another goal that felt like fate. It seemed like a once-in-a-lifetime goal. Messi's first impression on American shores was him producing the impossible.

And then, just 16 days later, he did it again. Similar scenario, similar result: Messi standing over the ball, picks his spot, crowd goes wild. In his first four games in Inter Miami's pink shirt, Messi buried two free-kicks, with both coming after the 85th minute with the game in the balance.

Would you expect any less? Well, if you've been following Messi throughout his career, probably not. It's what he does, after all. But where does Messi rank among the best of all-time when it comes to those heroic set-pieces? And, as he adjusts to life in MLS, is there any chance that he can prove himself as the league's best-ever free-kick taker, even at age 36?

  • Two moments of magic

Even David Beckham couldn't believe his eyes. The ex-England star, himself one of the most iconic free-kick takers the game has ever seen, was reduced to tears. That's the magic of Messi in a nutshell, isn't it?

With the match level in the 95th minute on his debut against Cruz Azul, Messi stepped up to the ball. There was no way he could bury it, right? It was too Hollywood, even for Beckham's club. Storytellers couldn't have written it any better.

Messi defies storytelling conventions, though. A few steps and a pinpoint effort later, DRV PNK Stadium was sent into hysteria. Miami had won the game, and the iconic Argentine was to thank.

In the weeks since, Messi simply hasn't let up. He scored two from open play against Atlanta United, leading the way in a 4-0 rout. Two more goals came in the next round against Orlando City as Inter Miami took down their local rivals. And then, in the Leagues Cup round of 16 against FC Dallas, Messi went wild again, opening the scoring just six minutes in.

His magic moment, though, came in the 85th. Down a goal and needing to score to stay alive in the competition, Miami earned a free-kick. Was there any doubt what would happen next?…

    A master at work

Make no mistake: goals from free-kicks are an anomaly. There's a reason that some of the game's most memorable finishes have come from set-pieces. Think Beckham against Greece, Roberto Carlos against France, Cristiano Ronaldo against Portsmouth… all iconic finishes because every single thing had to go right to even make them possible.

According to , direct free-kicks only have a six percent probability of ending in a goal. That means only one of 17 free-kick attempts ends up hitting in the back of the net. For Messi to have two in four games? Almost too ridiculous to believe.

You can count his head coach, Gerardo 'Tata' Martino, among those that can't really fathom what he's seen so far. “Many times there is a free-kick in that sector and only with him, and it happens that you have the sensation that he is going to score,” Martino said. “A free-kick is not something that is going to end up being a goal – 90% of the time, it is not a goal. But when he has it, it’s the opposite: a 10% chance that it won't and a 90% chance that it is. So we have to take advantage of that.”

  • Marginal gains

Even Messi, the greatest to do it, isn't above a little tomfoolery. Shortly after his game-saving goal against Dallas, video emerged on social media showing the Argentine's preparation leading up to it. Shortly before striking the ball, as the referee gave instructions to players in the wall, Messi repeatedly inched the ball over to the left. He picked the ball up several times, innocently moving it over just a few inches.

It's the little details, huh? By doing that, Messi was able to just move the ball into the ideal position for him to strike. And strike it he did.

It's no coincidence. Messi knew exactly what he was doing. He knew here he wanted the ball and why. Once he got it there, all that was left to do was find the back of the net.

    Lessons from Maradona

It's hard to believe but, at one point, Messi wasn't even seen as a top free-kick taker at La Masia. And, it wasn't really until 2009 that he truly took his next step in the art of dead-ball striking.

Credit will go to his teacher who was, of course, none other than Diego Maradona. In February 2009 in Marseille, the then-Argentina head coach gave a lesson to his heir apparent, and that lesson stuck.

"I saw Diego coming, he took him by the shoulder and said: 'Little Leo, little Leo, come here, man. Let's try it again.' It was like a teacher with his pupil," Maradona's assistant Fernando Signorini told .

"He continued: 'Put the ball here and listen to me: don't take your foot away from the ball so fast because otherwise it won't know what you want.' He then stroked the ball with his left foot straight into the angle of the net, with Messi's face full of admiration."

Another night to forget for Pulisic! Winners and losers as Grealish drives Man City to Carabao Cup win over Chelsea

The USMNT star missed big chances for the Blues as they crashed out of the League Cup at the Etihad Stadium

Manchester City might not have won the Carabao Cup last season, but their love affair with the competition is well and truly back on as they began their bid to win the trophy for the fifth time in six years with a 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Second-half goals from Riyad Mahrez and Julian Alvarez proved to be the difference as two much-changed teams produced an entertaining affair at the Etihad Stadium.

Chelsea have now lost three of their last four matches in all competitions, and Graham Potter has a big job to do to turn things around at Stamford Bridge over the next few months.

But who had the best night, and who will want to move on from this one pretty quickly? GOAL breaks down the winners and losers…

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Jack Grealish

Questions continue to be asked of Grealish's suitability to a Pep Guardiola team, but if he puts in performances of the level he did here on a more regular basis, then those questions will soon disappear.

The England international was electric from the first minute, driving at the Chelsea defence, creating chances for both himself and others while winning free-kicks in dangerous areas.

On another night he might have had a hat-trick were it not for Edouard Mendy, who made three fine saves either side of half-time to deny the City winger.

If he can carry this form into the World Cup, then he has the potential to light up Qatar for the Three Lions.

  • Getty Images

    LOSER: Christian Pulisic

If Grealish looks ready to take the World Cup by storm, then the same cannot be said of Pulisic, who again failed to show why he should be given more minutes by Graham Potter.

The United States star should have given the visitors the lead early on, but fluffed his lines when just seven or eight yards from goal, with his scuffed finish deflecting into Stefan Ortega's grateful grasp.

The City goalkeeper denied Pulisic what would have been a far more spectacular strike later in the half, but that was as good as it got for the man who so many American hopes are set to be pinned on in Qatar.

On this evidence, he might struggle to carry them.

  • Getty Images

    WINNER: Lewis Hall

On a another miserable night for Chelsea, one of their few bright spots came in the performance of teenager Lewis Hall.

The 18-year-old was making just his second senior appearance but was a ball of energy at left wing-back as he regularly got the better of fellow youngster Rico Lewis.

Hall will wonder how he didn't mark the game with a goal, as he was twice denied by Ortega saves, though he really should have done better with his first chance after finding himself in space inside the penalty area.

His second opportunity was more of a great save from Ortega, and though he couldn't find the net, this was a performance from Hall that suggested he is ready for more opportunities in 2023.

    LOSER: Kalidou Koulibaly

Remember when Koulibaly was earning rave reviews in the early weeks of his Chelsea career? That seems a long time ago now.

Having played in just one of Chelsea's previous five games, the Senegal defender looked rusty and off the pace throughout on Wednesday.

He was perhaps fortunate to only receive a booking for a foul on Grealish as he looked to be breaking into the box in the first half and was regularly dribbled past by City's fleet-footed forwards.

The moment that probably summed up his night, though, was when he was the only member of the Chelsea wall not to jump when Riyad Mahrez struck a 20-yard free-kick early in the second half.

The ball flew straight over Koulibaly's head and into the net to open the scoring. Not a night to remember for the ex-Napoli star.
