Reporter tips Aston Villa to move for Burnley’s Dwight McNeil

Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield expects Aston Villa to target Burnley winger Dwight McNeil if they cannot persuade Arsenal to sell Emile Smith Rowe.

Villa boss Dean Smith has been keen to bolster his options after a promising second season back in the Premier League.

However, he has been frustrated in his attempts to sign attacking midfielder Smith Rowe, with Arsenal rejecting two big-money bids for the 20-year-old.

It has been reported that Villa will return with a third bid for the England under-21 international, although it is clear the Gunners do not want to sell as they are looking to tie Smith Rowe down to a new five-year deal.

As a result, McNeil has been identified as an alternative to Smith Rowe, much to the delight of the club’s fans.

Despite being just 21, the winger has already made 96 Premier League appearances, contributing seven goals and 16 assists.

Burnley will not want to lose their talisman, but Hatfield has tipped Smith to plot a move if Smith Rowe commits his future to Arsenal.

Speaking to The Transfer Tavern, Hatfield said: “The question, I suppose, is with Burnley. Would they be willing to sell him? They have got new owners in so are they looking to keep hold of players like that, or is there a price tag which both clubs can agree on?

“I think Villa are favouring Smith Rowe over him, judging by the interest we have seen there and the bids they have put in. But maybe he could be a back-up option if the Smith Rowe stuff doesn’t work out.”

Jacobs drops Newcastle takeover claim

Ben Jacobs has dropped a claim on the potential takeover of Newcastle United as news emerged involving Amanda Staveley.

The Lowdown: Staveley’s letter

As per Sky News, Staveley – the businesswoman and head of PCP Capital Partners who is part of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) group looking to take over at St. James’ Park – has written a letter to Tracey Crouch, the MP leading a government-commissioned review of football’s governance.

In this letter, she has accused the Premier League of a ‘closely guarded lack of transparency’ ahead of their upcoming arbitration case over the failed takeover deal between Mike Ashley and the consortium.

She also argued that the administrator of the Premier League has raised ‘an effective shield against public scrutiny’, and admitted that there is ‘real urgency’ with regards to trying to get their bid over the line.

Jamie Reuben, the wealthy businessman who is also part of the consortium, is thought to be supportive of Staveley’s letter.

The Latest: Jacobs reacts

Jacobs, a sports journalist who has been closely following all of the latest developments in the takeover saga, has since taken to Twitter to give his overall reaction to the letter which was released.

He claims that both that the letter from Staveley and the statement from Newcastle calling for the arbitration process to be made public ‘can be seen as either confident and confrontational or just a little desperate’.

Jacobs added that Staveley ‘will need a cordial working relationship’ with the Premier League if the takeover succeeds, meaning that her criticism at this stage of the process is ‘significant’.

The Verdict: Significant indeed

As Jacobs points out, it certainly seems significant that Staveley has felt the need to send this letter so close to the start of the arbitration hearing, especially since she will need the support of the Premier League if the result is to go in her favour.

If the Tyneside club end up winning the case, then it may be difficult for them to get the Premier League on their side, given that both their statement and Staveley’s letter have effectively criticised them for their handling of the process so far.

Nonetheless, a solution will have to be worked out with the top flight if the Magpies are successful, and the sooner the better, so that the takeover process can be accelerated.

Lamela open to leaving Tottenham

According to a report by The Athletic, Tottenham attacker Erik Lamela has now expressed an interest in leaving the club during this summer transfer window alongside the likes of Harry Winks and Serge Aurier.

The Lowdown: Sell-to-buy…

Tottenham will need to offload players this summer if they’re going to attack the market and bolster new manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s squad options ahead of 2021/22.

Many players have been named as possible outgoings in the last few months, including Aurier, Winks, Lamela, Moussa Sissoko, Lucas Moura and even Dele Alli (football.london), and The Athletic have brought an update on the situation involving potential exits.

The Latest: Lamela open to leaving Tottenham…

Lamela has now apparently expressed an interest in playing elsewhere this summer, with his stance on leaving seemingly unknown until now.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-latest-updates-3/” title=”Spurs latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The 29-year-old had been touted as a name to make way and The Athletic have now reported that he is open to doing just that. Lamela is joined by Aurier and Winks as other men who want to leave alongside defender Toby Alderweireld, with the latter apparently informing Spurs of his wishes a while ago.

The Verdict: Time to go…

The Argentine’s career in north London is perhaps best summed up by his contribution during Tottenham’s most recent derby with Arsenal in March.

In a 2-1 defeat at the Emirates Stadium, Lamela scored one of the goals of the 2020/21 Premier League season, burying a sumptuous, improvised rabona into the bottom corner through a crowd of bodies. However, he later went on to receive a second yellow card and was subsequently dismissed for a hand-off into the face of Kieran Tierney (BBC).

Pundit Noel Whelan said at the start of the season that Lamela can be a ‘world beater’ on his day, but those glimpses of quality can be overshadowed by disciplinary problems and a torrid injury record.

Therefore, we believe that an exit for player would suit all parties this summer.

Fry tips West Ham to move for Adam Armstrong over Ivan Toney

Peterborough director of football Barry Fry has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that West Ham are more likely to move for Adam Armstrong than Ivan Toney this summer.

West Ham have been credited with an interest in both strikers. According to Football Insider, the Hammers are one of multiple Premier League sides who are keen on the Blackburn Rovers man.

Elsewhere, The Sun have claimed that Toney is one forward the east London club have identified in their search for reinforcements ahead of the new campaign.

It is the former, though, who Fry sees as the most realistic option for West Ham. He told TT:

“I don’t think West Ham would go to that much [Brentford’s valuation] for Ivan, they wouldn’t.

“Whereas Adam Armstrong, I can see them having a punt on that, because he’d be a lot cheaper.”

Armstrong was in terrific form in the Championship last season, scoring 28 goals in 40 appearances. It makes it little surprise that the Englishman is one striker the Hammers are looking at as manager David Moyes looks to bolster his attacking options.

However, that does not look like it will be an easy deal either, with Football Insider stating that Southampton are winning the race for the 24-year-old.

West Ham join race for Barak

According to a report by Corriere di Verona, via Sport Witness, West Ham United are now among the clubs interested in signing Hellas Verona and Czech Republic midfielder Antonin Barak.

The Lowdown: Czech raid…

West Ham’s interest in Czech internationals has been well documented over the last year, coming after they completed the brilliant double signing of Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal from Slavia Prague.

Indeed, the duo have impressed during their time in east London, with many more names from their nation duly linked with following suit.

Ondrej Kolar, Adam Hlozek, Alex Kral and David Zima have all been touted with possible moves to the Irons, and another name from that neck of the woods has now entered the fray.

The Latest: West Ham join race to Barak…

As per Corriere di Verona, via Sport Witness, West Ham now want Barak, who was a mainstay for the Czech Republic over their Euro 2020 campaign. They aren’t the only interested party, though, with Inter Milan, Napoli and Eintracht Frankfurt also eyeing a move.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-2/” title=”West Ham latest!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

It is explained that his club are not keen on the idea of selling him this summer but could very well allow him to leave for the right price. Interest has apparently flourished around Barak in recent months and an auction could soon open for his services.

The Verdict: Lingard alternative?

West Ham reportedly want a permanent deal for Jesse Lingard, a new striker and fresh centre-back option first and foremost this summer window (Claret & Hugh).

It is unclear what the future holds for Lingard, though, and Barak could come as an alternative if the Irons cannot bring the Englishman back to east London.

Quite the physical presence at 1.9m (6 foot 2), he racked up seven goals and three assists in 32 Serie A starts over 2020/21 (WhoScored). He is also valued at a meagre £12.6m by Transfermarkt, pointing to a potentially cut-price option.

Hellas Verona originally believed that his value could sky rocket close to €20m (£17.1m) if the Czech Republic got past Denmark in their Euro 2020 quarter-final on Saturday, but their exit means that this isn’t possible.

That could be a boost for GSB and the Hammers if they wish to add the 26-year-old to their growing Czech contingent at the London Stadium.

How Rangers could look next season

Rangers will be looking to add some quality to their squad ahead of their return to the Champions League next season, with Steven Gerrard’s side’s performances in the cup competitions arguably one blemish on an otherwise superb season.

Whilst the Gers were able to finish the league season unbeaten and claim their first title in ten years, bringing an end to their Old Firm rival’s run of consecutive titles in the process, they failed to impress in the domestic cup competitions and fell short in the Europa League against Slavia Prague.

Therefore, Gerrard will surely be keen to add to his squad ahead of next season and the Gers have been linked with a whole host of names ahead of the summer transfer window.

Here’s how Football FanCast predicts Rangers’ strongest XI could look next season…

After signing a contract extension and being superb in the title win last season, it seems likely that Allan McGregor will continue as Gerrard’s first-choice goalkeeper.

James Tavernier and Borna Barisic seem likely to continue at full-back after they impressed last season, although Nathan Patterson and Calvin Bassey both showed that they can be relied upon as backup.

At centre-back, Filip Helander has been touted for an Ibrox exit, so Joseph Okumu could be the man to replace him as Rangers battle to sign him from Elfsborg this summer, with a fee of £3.4m likely to be enough to bring him to Ibrox.

Joey Veerman is another who has been heavily linked with a move to Rangers and whilst he would cost around £8.5m, his performances at Heerenveen in recent seasons suggest he could be a massive success at Ibrox next season.

Steven Davis and Joe Aribo would likely start ahead of him in midfield, with the likes of Scott Arfield and Ryan Jack also likely to be in regulars in Gerrard’s side.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-rangers-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Rangers transfer rumours and news!”]

Fashion Sakala has already arrived from Oostende and could be the man to step up as Ryan Kent’s replacement on the left wing, with the former Liverpool youngster continuing to be linked with Leeds United.

On the opposite flank, Ianis Hagi has also been touted with an exit so transfer target Zinedine Ferhat, who is currently valued at £7.2m by Transfermarkt, could be signed as the Romanian’s replacement, which would take sporting director Ross Wilson’s spending to around £19m.

[freshpress-quiz id=“593776″]

If Alfredo Morelos stays then he will surely start up front, although the likes of Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten and Jermain Defoe, who recently extended his stay at Ibrox, can all provide competition in attack.

LFC fans react positively to Neuhaus update

A number of Liverpool fans have been reacting positively to an update on Florian Neuhaus, with the German thought to be the Reds’ Gini Wijnaldum replacement.

Wijnaldum’s time as a Liverpool has come to an end, with the Dutchman joining Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

The 30-year-old could leave a gaping void in the Reds’ midfield, with his consistency and availability so key to Jurgen Klopp’s side’s success in recent years.

The hope is that Liverpool bring in a replacement for Wijnaldum and Neuhaus has been constantly linked with a summer move to Anfield.

The midfielder is currently on Euro 2020 duty with Germany and AS claim that he remains Klopp’s chosen man to come in for the Netherlands international.

Neuhaus is likened to German legend Toni Kroos in the report, which can only bode well if the Reds end up getting their man.

Everton interested in Danjuma switch

Everton’s season ended in the worst way possible last weekend as they were well and truly battered by the Premier League champions.Their defence was cut open like a knife through butter while they lacked cutting edge and penetration on the counter-attack.

What’s the word?

One way of improving their fluency in the final third would be to sign a winger.

Football FanCast revealed last month that the Toffees were in the market for somebody who could play on the right-hand side. However, we believe Everton should stop at nothing to bolster the other flank as well.

Fortunately, it looks as though they’ll be doing exactly that. Football League World report this week that Carlo Ancelotti’s men are battling for the signature of tricky Bournemouth flanker Arnaut Danjuma.

Everton are looking to take advantage of the south coast side’s failure to get promoted from the Championship.

A number of top-flight sides are now circling with Wolves, West Ham and Brighton also interested in Danjuma’s signature.

Iwobi upgrade

If Everton can lure the attacker to Goodison Park this summer then he’d represent a huge upgrade on Alex Iwobi.

The Nigerian signed for £28m in the summer of 2019 but his arrival on Merseyside hasn’t been greeted particularly positively.

On his day, he can frighten the opposition with his dribbling but very rarely does he combine that with end product.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-everton-transfer-news-lukaku-leao-bissouma-berge-antony” title=”Read the latest Everton transfer news!”]

Iwobi has scored just twice this term, taking his tally in the royal blue of Everton to four strikes in 65 appearances.

Those numbers aren’t strong enough whatsoever for a side challenging for a place in European football so improvement is need.

Danjuma would provide Ancelotti with the ability to beat a man but also provide goals and assists.

The Dutchman was in inspired form for the Cherries this term, racking up a mightily impressive haul of 17 goals. Capable of playing anywhere across the front three, it was on the left where he truly stood out.

The 24-year-old was impressive when it came to creating chances for his teammates as well, providing eight assists in all competitions.

He claimed the award for the EFL Championship Player of the Month in April and has gone from strength to strength this season, particularly under Jonathan Woodgate.

With the former defender at the helm, Danjuma totted up ten goals and six assists in just 18 league outings.

It’s hardly a surprise that Woodgate’s found the time to wax lyrical about his abilities: “I know last season that he didn’t really get a run in the Premier League and he maybe found it a bit difficult to get game time, but this season he’s been outstanding.â€

The Bournemouth boss continued: “I can only talk of what he’s done under my reign, but at the minute, he’s playing some exceptional football, and what else he is doing is working for the team.â€

Capable of producing moments of magic from nowhere, he’s the type of player you’d always love to have in your team.

Against Norwich he showed exactly what he’s capable of, skipping past two Canaries players before rifling a bullet right into the top corner.

It showcased his scintillating dribbling skills too, an area of his game that usurps nearly every player at Everton. Danjuma managed 1.8 dribbles per game this season, a number that only Richarlison can replicate.

This would be a top drawer signing from Ancelotti and Marcel Brands.

AND in other news, Everton can begin the transfer window with a bang by signing “dangerous” 16-goal beast…
